Head Coach Millicent Sylvan
Millicent Sylvan is in her second season as the head women’s volleyball
coach at South Carolina State.
Sylvan, who brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge to SC State, is no
stranger to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). She served three
seasons (2005-2007) as the head coach at North Carolina A&T. While at NC
A&T, she compiled an overall record of 49-52 and was 23-6 in the conference.
In her second season with the Aggies, Sylvan’s team posted a 9-1 conference
record, good enough for a second place finish. That same season, she was
named the MEAC Coach of the Year. Her accolades at NC A&T expand far and
wide as she has coached one first-team All-MEAC performer and four different
second-team All-MEAC. selections
Prior to her appointment at NC A&T, Sylvan spent three seasons at her
alma mater, Alcorn State where she posted a 71-42 record, a pair of Southwestern

As a student-athlete, Sylvan was a two-sport standout at Alcorn
State earning letters in volleyball and track. On the court she was a
two-time All-SWAC selection and was named the pre-season volleyball
SWAC Player of the Year in 2000. On the track, Sylvan was a 2000 USA

Experience and Youth: The Recipe for Success
SC State 2008 Women’s Volleyball Outlook
The 2007 season did not end up as South Carolina State head coach
Millicent Sylvan envisioned, so she revamped her team with hopes of
getting better results. The 2008 team returns just three letterwinners from
last. Seniors Laura Waters-Brown, juniors Linnie Garrett and sophomore
Jarne Gleaton are the only veterans that will be surrounding eight freshmen
for the Lady Bulldogs this season. The Lady Bulldogs did get a bonus with
the return of graduate Kisela Glöss who sat out the 2007 season due to
injury.
Despite their inexperience, the newcomers are a talented group.
Four of the freshmen joining the Lady Bulldogs this season come from the
same high school and club team, which should translate into positive
results. Combined with Gleaton, who was second on the team in hitting as
a freshman, Garrett and Waters-Brown who were third in hitting and second
in digs, respectively, and junior college transfer Shauntanell Pratt, this
year’s team is definitely equipped to be more competitive than last year’s.
“I am looking forward to working with the new, talented young
players,” said Sylvan, who is beginning her second season. “They will be
a huge complement to the returning players.
“All of our newcomers are athletic and have a lot of year-round
playing experience,” added Sylvan. “The setters that we have coming in
can run a diversified offense due to their speed and ability to read the
court.”
Of the returning players, Sylvan will look to Gleaton to lead the
team. The West Columbia, South Carolina native recorded 267 kills
(2.50) and 48 service aces, both second on the team, for SC State in
2007. Gleaton also recorded 46 total blocks and 147 digs for her squad.
Garrett is also expected to provide veteran leadership. A middle-blocker, she was third on the team in both kills, 221 (2.07 per game), and
service aces, 40.
The Lady Bulldogs have a very competitive non-conference schedule which should prepare the team for conference play;
however, the returnees and newcomers will have to mesh quickly, as this year’s team will open the 2008 campaign August 29, at the twoday Tiny Laster Memorial Volleyball Tournament. The tournament, named in memory of Hampton University’s long-time head coach
Tiny Laster, will be one of five that SC State will play in during the season. This is a good opening tournament for the Lady Bulldogs as it
puts them against host Hampton, Providence, Canisius and fellow MEAC foe Delaware State.
Other tournaments the Lady Bulldogs will participate in include the High Point Radisson Invite (Sept 5-6), UT-Arlington Holiday
Inn Invitational (Sept. 12-13), the SCSU Invitational (formerly SCSU Spikefest), hosted by SC State (Sept. 19-20) and the North Carolina
Central Tournament (Sept. 26-27).
The non-conference season will undoubtedly be another competitive one for SC State. In addition to Providence and Canisius, the
Lady Bulldogs will face East Carolina, Marist, UNC-Greensboro, and High Point in the High Point Tournament; University of TexasArlington, Duke, and Middle Tennessee in the University of Texas-Arlington Tournament; Coastal Carolina, The Citadel and Charleston
Southern in the SCSU Invitational; and Alabama State, North Carolina Central and Kent State in the North Carolina Central Tournament.
Individual non-conference opponents include Southern University in Baton Rouge, as well as intra-state rivals Coastal Carolina in Myrtle
Beach, Francis Marion in Florence and the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
SC State will open its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) divisional play on October 3, when it travels to Tallahassee,
Florida to face seven-time defending champion Florida A&M University. The Lady Bulldogs will open their MEAC home season against
those same Lady Rattlers on October 17.
Overall, Sylvan’s 2008 Lady Bulldog team hopes that the combination of experienced returnees and the addition of talented
youth will provide the tools that will lead to a more successful campaign. Last year’s team finished 8-23 overall and 1-7 in the MEAC.
Sophomore Outside Hitter Jarne Gleaton
finished the 2007 season with 267 kills.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), a NCAA
Division I Conference, is in its 38th year of operation heading
into the 2008-2009 academic school year. Housed in the Armada
Hoffler Tower at Town Center of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the
MEAC is made up of 12 outstanding, historically black institutions
across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin
State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M
University, Hampton University, Howard University, University
of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk
State University, North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University and Winston-Salem State University.
HISTORY
In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of
organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea,
present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals.
After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State
College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore,

Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North
Volleyball Standings (Division Breakdown)
Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College)
agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major
objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate

North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979 fiscal year. Maryland Eastern
Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984. Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984, but was readmitted in 1986. Coppin
State College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth member institution. The MEAC expanded again in the 90’s with the
inclusion of Hampton University (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The final expansion occurred in 2007, with the addition of
Winston-Salem State University.
On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The
following month the MEAC received an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
Currently, the league has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981),
women’s basketball (since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since
1994).

About South Carolina State University
Since 1896, South Carolina State University has
maintained a legacy of excellence in education.
The institution has home to generations of scholars
and leaders in business, military service,
government, athletics, education, medicine,
science, engineering technology and more.
Located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, South
Carolina State University was founded as a land
grant college with a mission of providing education
and service to the citizens of the state. In its first
century, South Carolina State was a leader in
education and continues to lead the way into the
next century.
South Carolina State University is
consistently among the national leaders in
producing African-American students with

business, engineering technology, computer
science/mathematics, and English language/
literature. Moreover, the institution is one of three universities in South Carolina to offer a doctoral program in Educational Administration and
one of two schools in the state to offer an accredited master’s degree program in Speech/Language Pathology.
You will enjoy a wide variety of events and activities that make campus life special at South Carolina State - NCAA Division I athletics for men
and women, the world-famous Marching 101 band, the pageantry and history of Homecoming and Founder’s Day, and many others. And
because South Carolina State is centrally located in South Carolina, you’ll enjoy pleasant weather and easy access to the beaches, the
mountains, and such metropolitan centers as Charleston, Columbia, Charlotte, and Atlanta.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
Founded in 1896 as the state’s sole public college for black youth, South Carolina State University has played a key role in the education
of African-Americans in the state and nation. As a land-grant institution, it struggled to provide agricultural and mechanical training to
generations of black youngsters. Through its extension program, it sent farm and home demonstration agents into rural counties to provide
knowledge and information to impoverished black farm families.
The University has educated scores of teachers for the public schools. It provided education in sciences, literature, and history.
The support of the Rosenwald Fund and the General Education Board helped the institution survive the Depression. After World War II, the
state legislature created a graduate program and a law school at South Carolina State University to prevent black students from enrolling
in the University of South Carolina’s graduate and legal education programs. The legislature also dramatically increased funding at the
college in an effort to make “separate but equal” a reality in higher education in South Carolina. During the 1950s and 1960s hundreds of
South Carolina State students participated in local civil rights demonstrations and were arrested. In 1968 three young men were slain and
27 wounded on the campus by state highway patrolmen in the Orangeburg Massacre.
Since 1966, South Carolina State University has been open to white students and faculty, but it has largely retained its mission
and character as an historically black institution. In 1971, the agricultural program was terminated and the college farm was transformed into
a community recreation center consisting of a golf course as well as soccer and baseball fields. Today there are nearly 5000 students
majoring in a wide range of programs that include agribusiness, accounting, art, English, and drama as well as fashion merchandising,
physics, psychology, and political science.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, a senior comprehensive
teaching institution, is committed to providing affordable and accessible
quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs. This public
university with a student population between 4,000 and 5,000 is
located in Orangeburg, an area that has a traditional rural, agricultural
economy which has expanded to include a business and industrial
focus that is national and international in scope. South Carolina State
University’s 1890 land-grant legacy of service to the citizenry of the
state is ensured through its collaborative efforts with local, rural, and
statewide businesses, public education, colleges and industry. This
symbiotic relationship provides a catalyst that spurs a reciprocal
economic and social growth for the University, state, nation and the
international community at-large.
South Carolina State University, founded in 1896 as a
historically Black coeducational institution, embraces diversity among
its students, faculty, staff and programs. While maintaining its traditional
focus, the University is fully committed to providing lifelong learning
opportunities for the citizens of the state and qualified students of
varied talents and backgrounds in a caring and nurturing learning
environment.
South Carolina State University, through instruction,
research and service activities, prepares highly skilled, competent,
economically and socially aware graduates to meet life’s challenges
and demands that enable them to work and live productively in a
dynamic, global society. The University offers sixty baccalaureate
programs in the areas of applied professional sciences, engineering
technology, sciences, arts, humanities, education and business. A
small number of programs is offered at the master’s level in teaching,
human services and agribusiness, and the educational specialist and
doctorate programs are offered in educational administration. Faculty
and students participate in research that stimulates intellectual growth,
enhances and facilitates student learning and adds to the scientific
knowledge base of the academy. Service activities, which are provided
through programs, related to agriculture, adult and continuing
education, research, cultural arts, small business development and
other special interest areas, are designed to enhance the quality of
life and promote economic growth. These efforts, supported by various
applications of technology, are achieved in a climate of mutual trust
and respect through methods of scholarly inquiry and scientific
research.
The SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY Mission Statement
was approved by its Board of Trustees on December 2, 1997.

Athletics Director, Charlene M. Johnson
Guiding the South Carolina State University Department
of Athletics is Charlene Johnson, who enters her fifth
year as head of the department.
After serving as Athletics Director on an interim
capacity in 2004, Johnson was elevated to the position
on a permanent basis in the spring of 2005. Always a
groundbreaker, Johnson continued to build upon her
legacy two years ago when she became the first female
to serve as the Chair of the Director of Athletics in the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
The 2008-09 athletic season marks Mrs.
Johnson’s twenty-sixth year as a member of the South
Carolina State University Department of Athletics,
making her one of just three athletics staff members
with 20-plus years of service to the University’s athletics
department.
Prior to being named Director of Athletics,
Johnson served seven years as the senior women
administrator and associate athletics director for the
university.
During her tenure as Director of Athletics, three
different SC State teams have brought home
conference championships, with two earning NCAA
tournament appearances. The SCSU men’s tennis
team captured men’s titles 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008
earning trips to the NCAA tournament each season.
During the last four seasons, the Lady Bulldogs joined
the men’s team as conference champions, winning
their first MEAC title since the early eighties in 2005
and titles and trips to the NCAA tournament in 2006,
2007 and 2008. The 2004 season also saw the SCSU
football team capture its first MEAC championship
since 1994.
As the school’s Associate Athletics Director,
Johnson helped usher in a new era in SC State
Athletics, assisting in the planning, directing, and
coordinating of all areas of the department of athletics.
Her efforts in athletics have extended beyond
South Carolina State as she has served on several
NCAA committees.
She began her illustrious career in athletics
at South Carolina State University in 1983 when she
became the first woman to be appointed to a fulltime
coaching position, serving as an assistant on the Lady
Bulldog basketball team.
Since that time,
she has served the
university in a number of
capacities, including head
volleyball coach, head
women’s tennis coach,
and assistant women’s
basketball coach. She also
spent two terms as the
school’s interim Director of
Athletics.
Johnson became
Charlene M. Johnson
a part of SC State history
Director of Athletics
early on when, as a player,
South Carolina State University
she helped the Lady
Bulldogs capture the 1979 AIAW National Championship
with a 73-68 win over Dayton in Fargo, North Dakota. Her
five points proved to be the winning
margin in the contest. After her playing career, Johnson
continued to help the SCSU women’s basketball program.
As a member of the coaching staff, she helped the Lady
Bulldogs to remain one of the top teams in the Southeast.
In 1990, Johnson guided the Lady Bulldog
volleyball team to its sole Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference
championship, earning MEAC Coach of the Year honors
for her efforts. She also captured MEAC Coach of the Year
honors for women’s tennis in 1986.
In recognition of her efforts, Johnson was inducted
into the South Carolina State Athletics Hall of Fame in
1998 as an administrator and received special recognition
in 2000 as a member of the 1979 AIAW National
Championship team.
Mrs. Johnson earned both her bachelor’s (1980)
and master’s (1987) from South Carolina State. She is
married to Virgin Johnson, Jr., and they are the proud
parents of two children: Taylor and Virgin (Trey) III.
