Sylvan, who brings a wealth of volleyball knowledge to SC State, is no stranger to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). She served three seasons (2005-2007) as the head coach at North Carolina A&T. While at NC A&T, she compiled an overall record of 49-52 and was 23-6 in the conference. In her second season with the Aggies, Sylvan’s team posted a 9-1 conference record, good enough for a second place finish. That same season, she was named the MEAC Coach of the Year. Her accolades at NC A&T expand far and wide as she has coached one first-team All-MEAC performer and four different second-team All-MEAC. selections Prior to her appointment at NC A&T, Sylvan spent three seasons at her alma mater, Alcorn State where she posted a 71-42 record, a pair of Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Eastern Division Titles and two runner-up finishes Head Coach, Millicent Sylvan in the SWAC. Sylvan currently holds a 128-117 overall record over a seven-year span. Before launching her coaching career, Sylvan was the director of athletics at Romeville Elementary School in Convent, LA for the 2000-01 school year. Additionally, she founded the Alley Catz AAU Volleyball Club. She also served as the strength and conditioning coach at Loyola University in New Orleans, LA. As a student-athlete, Sylvan was a two-sport standout at Alcorn State earning letters in volleyball and track. On the court she was a two-time All-SWAC selection and was named the pre-season volleyball SWAC Player of the Year in 2000. On the track, Sylvan was a 2000 USA Track and Field Indoor National Participant and a provisional qualifier in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles in that same year. She currently owns the school and SWAC record in the heptathlon with 5,071 points. During her time as an athlete, she was a member of several student organizations, including the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, SWAC Student-Athlete Association and the Alcorn State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A four-year SWAC scholar athlete, Sylvan was a two-time recipient of the NCAA Leadership Award and a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Athlete Award in 2000. Prior to coming to SC State, Kirby served two seasons as the women’s and men’s assistant volleyball coach at Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, NC. In 2004 he was the assistant volleyball coach at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC. Kirby’s coaching experience were also horned during the summer months as he coached volleyball camps in Virginia, Minnesota, North Carolina and South Carolina. Asst. That same year the team advanced to the 2005 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship. In 2004, Kirby helped lead Cape Fear Community College to it’s first-ever Carolinas Junior College Conference (CJCC) Title, earning the school a spot at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The team won the regular season and the CJCC Tournament, going 14-2 in the conference and 24-7 overall. Kirby earned a Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in health and physical education: K-12 from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999. Student Assistant Kathlyn Stephenson Kathlyn Stephenson is in her first season as the student assistant at South Carolina State. Stephenson was a member of the Lady Bulldogs volleyball team from 2006-2007. She completed her two seasons at SC State with 175 kills, 94 digs, 48 block assists and 5 block solos. Stephenson, a native of Bridgetown, Barbados, will receive her degree in Family and Consumer Science Business in May 2009. Student Asst., Kathlyn Stephenson 6 2008 Lady Bulldogs Volleyball Experience and Youth: The Recipe for Success SC State 2008 Women’s Volleyball Outlook The 2007 season did not end up as South Carolina State head coach Millicent Sylvan envisioned, so she revamped her team with hopes of getting better results. The 2008 team returns just three letterwinners from last. Seniors Laura Waters-Brown, juniors Linnie Garrett and sophomore Jarne Gleaton are the only veterans that will be surrounding eight freshmen for the Lady Bulldogs this season. The Lady Bulldogs did get a bonus with the return of graduate Kisela Glöss who sat out the 2007 season due to injury. Despite their inexperience, the newcomers are a talented group. Four of the freshmen joining the Lady Bulldogs this season come from the same high school and club team, which should translate into positive results. Combined with Gleaton, who was second on the team in hitting as a freshman, Garrett and Waters-Brown who were third in hitting and second in digs, respectively, and junior college transfer Shauntanell Pratt, this year’s team is definitely equipped to be more competitive than last year’s. “I am looking forward to working with the new, talented young players,” said Sylvan, who is beginning her second season. “They will be a huge complement to the returning players. “All of our newcomers are athletic and have a lot of year-round playing experience,” added Sylvan. “The setters that we have coming in can run a diversified offense due to their speed and ability to read the court.” Of the returning players, Sylvan will look to Gleaton to lead the team. The West Columbia, South Carolina native recorded 267 kills (2.50) and 48 service aces, both second on the team, for SC State in 2007. Gleaton also recorded 46 total blocks and 147 digs for her squad. Garrett is also expected to provide veteran leadership. A middle-blocker, she was third on the team in both kills, 221 (2.07 per game), and service aces, 40. The Lady Bulldogs have a very competitive non-conference schedule which should prepare the team for conference play; however, the returnees and newcomers will have to mesh quickly, as this year’s team will open the 2008 campaign August 29, at the twoday Tiny Laster Memorial Volleyball Tournament. The tournament, named in memory of Hampton University’s long-time head coach Tiny Laster, will be one of five that SC State will play in during the season. This is a good opening tournament for the Lady Bulldogs as it puts them against host Hampton, Providence, Canisius and fellow MEAC foe Delaware State. Other tournaments the Lady Bulldogs will participate in include the High Point Radisson Invite (Sept 5-6), UT-Arlington Holiday Inn Invitational (Sept. 12-13), the SCSU Invitational (formerly SCSU Spikefest), hosted by SC State (Sept. 19-20) and the North Carolina Central Tournament (Sept. 26-27). The non-conference season will undoubtedly be another competitive one for SC State. In addition to Providence and Canisius, the Lady Bulldogs will face East Carolina, Marist, UNC-Greensboro, and High Point in the High Point Tournament; University of TexasArlington, Duke, and Middle Tennessee in the University of Texas-Arlington Tournament; Coastal Carolina, The Citadel and Charleston Southern in the SCSU Invitational; and Alabama State, North Carolina Central and Kent State in the North Carolina Central Tournament. Individual non-conference opponents include Southern University in Baton Rouge, as well as intra-state rivals Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, Francis Marion in Florence and the University of South Carolina in Columbia. SC State will open its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) divisional play on October 3, when it travels to Tallahassee, Florida to face seven-time defending champion Florida A&M University. The Lady Bulldogs will open their MEAC home season against those same Lady Rattlers on October 17. Overall, Sylvan’s 2008 Lady Bulldog team hopes that the combination of experienced returnees and the addition of talented youth will provide the tools that will lead to a more successful campaign. Last year’s team finished 8-23 overall and 1-7 in the MEAC. Sophomore Outside Hitter Jarne Gleaton finished the 2007 season with 267 kills. 7 2008 Lady Bulldogs Volleyball 2008 Lady Bulldog Numerical Roster Front Row (from left to right): Erinn Phillips, Bria Brimmer, Peri Ligons, Laura Waters-Brown, Brendall Studnicka, Lauren Lawson, Kaitlyn Kees Back Row (from left to right): Linnie Garrett, Melissa Robinson, Shabree Roberson, Tiffané Jackson, Jarne Gleaton, Gisela Kloss # 2 3 4 5 6 7 9 10 11 15 17 21 Name Peri Ligons Linnie Garrett Jarne Gleaton Tiffané Jackson Shabree Roberson Lauren Harris Melissa Robinson Gisela Kloss Kaitlyn Kees Bria Brimmer Brendell Studnicka Laura Waters-Brown Pos Utility Middle Blocker Outside Hitter Middle Blocker Middle Blocker Defensive Specialist Utility Middle Blocker Middle Blocker Setter Setter Outside Hitter Ht 5-7 5-9 5-11 5-8 5-11 5-7 5-8 5-11 5-10 5-6 5-8 5-8 Cl FR JR SO FR FR FR FR Sr FR FR FR SR Hometown/Previous School/HS Austin, TX/Connally HS Lithia Springs, GA/Lithia Springs HS West Columbia, SC/Airport HS Montgomery, AL/George Washington Carver HS Pflugerville, TX/Connally HS Austin, TX/Connally HS Tallahassee, FL/Florida HS Stuttgart, Germany/Schickhardt Gymnasium Martinsburg, WV/Musselman HS Austin, TX/Connally HS Clay Center, NE/Clay Center HS Gahanna, OH/Gahanna Lincoln HS 8 2008 Lady Bulldogs Volleyball #10 Gisela Kloss Senior • Middle Blocker • 5’11” • Stuttgart, Germany/Schickhardt Gym. Housed in the Armada Hoffler Tower at Town Center of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the MEAC is made up of 12 outstanding, historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University and Winston-Salem State University. HISTORY In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals. After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 2007 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Volleyball Standings (Division Breakdown) Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate NORTHERN DIVISION athletic program among a compact group of educational institutions of high academic standards and with a sound philosophy of coMEAC Overall curricular activities. MATCH WON-LOST PCT W-L W-L The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season Maryland-Eastern Shore 10-0 24-4 of competition in football in 1971. Morgan State 7-3 24-4 In 1978, a milestone was reached when the MEAC selected Delaware State 7-3 11-17 Kenneth A. Free to be its first full-time commissioner. He had been Howard 4-6 5-27 preceded by three interim (part-time) commissioners: Dr. Leroy Hampton 2-8 11-19 Walker (1971-74); who later had the distinction of serving as the Coppin State 0-10 1-25 President of the United States Olympic Committee, the late Earl Mason (1974-75) and the late Dr. James Young (1975-78). SOUTHERN DIVISION Kenneth A. Free served the conference for 18 years before stepping down in 1995. In 1996, Charles S. Harris was named MEAC Overall commissioner and served in the capacity until April 2002. Longtime MATCH WON-LOST PCT W-L W-L MEAC administrator Brenda H. McCoy served two stints as Interim Florida A&M 8-0 18-8 Commissioner, one in 1996 and again in 2002. On September 1, North Carolina A&T 5-3 8-26 2002, Dr. Dennis E. Thomas was named the commissioner and has Bethune-Cookman 3-5 8-16 served in the position for six years. South Carolina State 1-7 8-23 The leagues’ first expansion occurred in October 1979 when Norfolk State 3-5 7-26 Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University were voted into the MEAC as new members. Original members Morgan State, North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979 fiscal year. Maryland Eastern Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984. Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984, but was readmitted in 1986. Coppin State College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth member institution. The MEAC expanded again in the 90’s with the inclusion of Hampton University (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The final expansion occurred in 2007, with the addition of Winston-Salem State University. On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The following month the MEAC received an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Currently, the league has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball (since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994). 17 2008 Lady Bulldogs Volleyball 2007 MEAC Individual Statistics HITTING PERCENTAGE (Minimum .200/3.0 attacks per game) Player Team Cl G Kills Errs Total ————————————————————————————————— 1. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY Founded in 1896 as the state’s sole public college for black youth, South Carolina State University has played a key role in the education of African-Americans in the state and nation. As a land-grant institution, it struggled to provide agricultural and mechanical training to generations of black youngsters. Through its extension program, it sent farm and home demonstration agents into rural counties to provide knowledge and information to impoverished black farm families. The University has educated scores of teachers for the public schools. It provided education in sciences, literature, and history. The support of the Rosenwald Fund and the General Education Board helped the institution survive the Depression. After World War II, the state legislature created a graduate program and a law school at South Carolina State University to prevent black students from enrolling in the University of South Carolina’s graduate and legal education programs. The legislature also dramatically increased funding at the college in an effort to make “separate but equal” a reality in higher education in South Carolina. During the 1950s and 1960s hundreds of South Carolina State students participated in local civil rights demonstrations and were arrested. In 1968 three young men were slain and 27 wounded on the campus by state highway patrolmen in the Orangeburg Massacre. Since 1966, South Carolina State University has been open to white students and faculty, but it has largely retained its mission and character as an historically black institution. In 1971, the agricultural program was terminated and the college farm was transformed into a community recreation center consisting of a golf course as well as soccer and baseball fields. Today there are nearly 5000 students majoring in a wide range of programs that include agribusiness, accounting, art, English, and drama as well as fashion merchandising, physics, psychology, and political science.
