Brampton Lacrosse Alliance works together in the areas of marketing, communications and facilities and getting the Lacrosse message out to the community of Brampton. Also involved in this undertaking is player development, coaching certification and referee development for all levels of lacrosse in Brampton. The Minors enjoyed a successful 2009 season with all rep teams performing well throughout the season in Field, Box and Girl's Field. Highlights of 2009 Rep Box - Novice #1 team made it to the quarter finals – their coach, Dan Klassen, was awarded the BMLA Revis Bennett Coaching Award – Dan has been involved with the BMLA for 25 years; PeeWee #1 team competed in A and took home the Bronze medal; PeeWee 2 Brampton Excelsiors are the 2009 C Gold Champions; Bantam #1 team competed in the B division and lost out in Quarter finals; Bantam #2 team competed in the D division they also made it to the quarter finals; Midget #1 team competed in A and ended their season in 9th place in all of Ontario; Intermediate team competed in A and lost in semifinals to the winners of A. Our House League Box and Field programs allowed many children from 4 to 21, at various skill levels, to enjoy the magic of this wonderful game. Both the Major and Junior A teams had a successful 2009 season. The Majors defeated Peterborough in the Eastern Finals and defeated the New Westminster Salmonbellies at Queens Park Arena B.C. in a thrilling 7 game series (with all four games they won in OT) to win the Mann Cup. The Junior A's had the best record in many years and fell one game short of winning the Minto Cup losing to Orangeville in game 3. . Zeny Lipinski Sr. will be the Major GM for the 2010 season and has hired Mike Hansen as the new Head Coach when Troy and his staff decided not to return. Bob Burke will be the Junior A GM and has appointed Doug Arthur as the team manager and re-hired coach Brian Beisel. 20 1 And a special congratulations to Dylan Evans for winning the E.W "Billy" Evans Memorial award as the Most Outstanding Graduating Junior "A" player in 2009 and to Kyle Rubisch for winning the Ken Giles Award as Brampton's Amateur Athlete of the year for 2009. We wish success to all players, coaches and volunteers as well as our sponsors and parents who support lacrosse year round in Brampton. On behalf of the BLA, thanks for your ongoing support. Revis Bennett Memorial Award For Excellence in Coaching ~ Dan Klassen Regional Councillor Paul Palleschi Wards 2 and 6 4 17 George “Potsy” Burrows George “Potsy” Alfred Burrows, was born in Toronto in 1918. “Potsy”, as he fondly became known, weighed in at 1.5 pounds. The family doctor at the time suggested to the Burrows that they might want to move out to the country somewhere for “fresh air” so that their baby boy might survive. Rumour had it that Potsy’s parents truly believed that their baby George would not make it and had him baptized twice, once at St. Paul’s and once with the Salvation Army just to be sure! including the Brampton Excelsiors, which assisted in raising funds for the War effort. In reflecting on his war experience, Potsy recalls going to Manning Depot, and joining the Air Force. Gordon Graydon was the Member of Parliament at that time. Everyone in Brampton knew Mr. Graydon who personally went to as many parents as possible to thank them for their boys joining and serving their country. “I was one of the lucky ones who returned from war. Unfortunately, over 50 of my friends paid the supreme sacrifice and did not return home” says Potsy. “They were all close friends of mine. We played hockey, lacrosse and went to school together.” In 1946 with the war over, he returned to his involvement with lacrosse in Brampton assisting Jim Clevely and Bill Evans to start the Lakeshore Minor Lacrosse League. He played one last year in goal for the Senior Excelsiors during 1947. Potsy continued to be involved in lacrosse and established himself as a well-known minor and Ontario Lacrosse League referee from 1946 to 1965. Potsy began playing lacrosse in Brampton at the age of 8, in 1926. He played in the local field lacrosse league for 6 years before switching to box lacrosse in 1932; when Rosalea Athletic Field was built. Potsy was a goal tender and played until the fall of 1936 for Brampton. In the summer of 1936, he found himself goaltending three times in one day, a morning tournament in Burlington as a midget, an afternoon tournament in Streetsville with the Juveniles and an evening Senior Excelsior game in Brampton. Potsy helped to start the Brampton Lacrosse Oldtimer’s Association in the 1960s with Pete Barnett & Mush Thompson and continues to support the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame to this day. In 1990, he was recognized as a Brampton Excelsior Life Member. Last year, at the Minto Cup held in the City of Brampton, Potsy, at the age of 91, played The Last Post at the Opening Ceremonies and was also later recognized at the Toronto Rock’s second home game for his many years of service to lacrosse along with his friend Bill Burrell. Potsy has also made significant contributions to the community of Brampton as well as his country. He is a recipient of the Royal Canadian Legion’s 50 and 75 year medals and is now a Life Member. He was Brampton’s Citizen of the Year in 1997 and also won the Peel District School Board's Outstanding Service Award and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. Potsy continues to contribute to the Peel District School Board by speaking to students on a yearly basis about his wartime and life experiences. In May 2010, Potsy will become an honored member of the Brampton Sports Hall of Fame in the Veteran’s category. Home games were all played at the “new” Rose Bowl built in 1937, which seated 1500 spectators and was often filled to capacity with standing room only. In 1940, he joined the Excelsior Senior team who lost in the Ontario Finals against St. Catharines by 4 games to 2. World War II interrupted Potsy’s lacrosse playing in Brampton and in 1941 he joined the Air Force. During his time there, he played in goal for the Forces and arranged exhibition games against area senior teams Thank you Potsy for your lifetime commitment to the game of lacrosse in the City of Brampton. George M. Lee George Miles Lee was born November 8, 1846 near Grimsby. Lee graduated from Upper Canada College in 1869 and was subsequently appointed Second Master at Brampton High School in February 1871, under Mr. Robinson, the Head Master. Perkins Bull, author of From Rattlesnake Hunt To Hockey: The History of Sports in Canada and of the Sportsmen of Peel, 1798 to 1934, suggests that while it was Harry W. Dawson who brought "the first stick into Brampton," it was George M. Lee, at Brampton High School, who initiated the first organized lacrosse play in the spring of 1871 at the high school. At the time, he had just been reading Longfellow’s poem “Excelsior” and suggested the Club should be christened with that name. On a motion from Wesley Craig, the name “Excelsior” was selected. Symbolizing their ambition, “to aim ever higher,” the name has been prominent in lacrosse circles ever since. defeated the Ontario side in June 1871 on the grounds of the Agricultural Exhibition in Brampton (where the Armories are currently located on Chapel Street). After the game the Excelsior’s treated their rivals at the Queen’s Hotel. In the return match played in September in Toronto, the Ontario Club chose rough ground near the Parliament Buildings. The Excelsior’s, unaccustomed to this kind of ground, were defeated. The Second Twelve of the Ontario Club were not very sociable to Brampton’s 12 following the game! Although Lee was invited to stay at B.H.S., Lee left Brampton to pursue legal studies in September 1871. After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1876, he became a lawyer and was appointed by Sir Oliver Mowat as Registrar to ViceChancellor Proudfoot at Osgoode Hall. He held this post for five years and then became Clerk of Records and Writs and then the Taxing Master. In 1911, Lee became the Registrar of the High Court of Justice of Ontario, remaining in Osgoode Hall until his retirement in 1928. George Lee died on November 22, 1946 in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 100.
