It is quite amazing to think that we are 10 years past the change of the century, Y2K, and that 30 years ago the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program was just coming to life. How times flies! This is the time of year when we think of all we have achieved and all we want for the upcoming year. 2009 has been a year of excitement. At MPUE we have been reviewing 30 years of information of the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program and we have been thinking of new ways of promoting the program. One of our goals is to ensure all new parents know about our 12 schools so they have the opportunity to enroll their children in this wonderful educational environment. We also are focusing on our administrators, teachers and children in terms of understanding their needs. The sharing of information at EUBP principal sessions and teacher Professional Development Days allows for growth between schools and teaching practices. The newly English translated to Ukrainian social studies curriculum, ensures teachers concentrate on teaching versus translating their lessons. Children participate in various inter-school activities which provides them with an understanding and appreciation of a program which is bigger than just their own school and allows for additional educational forums and community learning and growth. These are all things which MPUE organizes or participates in to help the program grow and thrive. We very much appreciate and are grateful for the relationships we have between MPUE, the Department of Education and the administrators and school teachers. Our second half of the school year will continue to focus on celebrating our 30 years by highlighting some of our alumni, both students and administration. One alumni, Svitlana Maluzynsky, has written a wonderful article on her experiences and memories of her time in the EUBP. We hope you enjoy the information in the article and all the other information spread throughout the newsletter. From MPUE to all our EUBP families and friends we wish everyone a joyous Christmas season and a very Happy and Healthy 2010! Not only was it educational, but it was a lot of fun, too! This program is comprised of people who strongly care about providing children with the best education to serve them well in the future. Because preserving multiculturalism is a priority in Canada, students benefit from learning additional world cultures and languages. French is also taught and students have the remarkable opportunity of trilingual study. The memories I have of my childhood in the program are dear to me. Having St. Nicholas come visit in December, hosting Ukrainian Easter Breakfast in the spring, and traveling to Ukrainian festivals in other provinces were some of the numerous special experiences available to Ukrainian Program students. Events like these are made possible by dedicated staff and volunteers. My Baba and I are among those volunteers! The benefits of having been a student of the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program are countless. Travel in Eastern Europe has been considerably easier because I have been enabled to speak a Slavic language. Being able to visit and communicate with distant relatives in Ukraine was a special experience for me. Also, welcoming new immigrants who have come from another part of the world to Canada is easier because I have been exposed significantly to other world cultures. This exposure fosters interest and celebration of cultural understanding and diversity. Knowing Ukrainian has helped me tremendously in learning other languages and has profited my academic career. Additionally, I have remained friends with former schoolmates and we continue to actively participate in the UkrainianCanadian community! Since graduating from the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program, I have completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Manitoba. My major was Ukrainian and my minor was Central and East European Studies. I am currently considering applying to the Faculty of Education. Perhaps one day I will teach in the Ukrainian Program! At the very least, I will certainly enrol any future children of mine in the program and remain involved as a volunteer. My experience in the Ukrainian Program was fun and memorable. Understandably, I am pleased that this wonderful option remains supported to this day and that Manitoban youth are able to live Ukrainian culture and speak the language. Whether of Ukrainian descent or not, the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program is valuable and gives students a great advantage in life!
