Prez Report
October 2016
October wraps up a very busy summer season for us, both in horseshoes and on the farm. As I write this, we have just finished up a
very good corn harvest, and soon we will be harvesting soybeans
and planting wheat. Our summer horseshoe league has just wrapped
up. We had our Year-End Tournament on a beautiful fall Sunday
afternoon. This winter we look forward to heading to some indoor
tournaments. Check out the tournament schedule (page 10) and
stay connected with your horseshoe friends.
We had a great State Tournament at Jefferson City. The weather
was just what Mel Bruemmer ordered, with moderate temperatures
and no rain. This year was Jeff City 1, as they got the bid to host
our State Tournament again in 2017. Plans are already being made
for next year’s tournament.
At the business meeting Friday evening at the host hotel, The
Capitol Plaza, Stan Griggs was re-elected Statistician, Michael
Gillespie was re-elected Zone 1 Director, Danny Williams was
re-elected Zone 4 Director, and I was re-elected as your President.
We all thank you for your support. It is an honor to represent the
MOHPA.
At the banquet Saturday evening, also at the Capitol Plaza, we
had a good meal followed by the Candlelight Memorial, Awards
Program, and Hall of Fame Inductions. Once again, Stan Griggs
did a great job emceeing the banquet. Michael Gillespie was named
the Adult Player of the Year, and Warren Highley was named
Junior Player of the Year. Eugene Lloyd, Ed Eliason, and Harless
Kampe received Appreciation Awards; Bob Bastel received the
Presidential Award; and Al Gwinn and Ray Plute were inducted
into the MOHPA Hall of Fame.
We again had a very successful Junior Party for the kids to attend
while the grown-ups were at the banquet. Plans are already in the
works for next year’s Juniors Party, maybe a Swim Party? Thanks
to EVERYBODY who helped out during the Tournament.
In the Missouri vs Kansas Border War on September 17, Kansas
won for the second year in a row (see page 5). They whipped us
pretty good this year; the final score was Kansas 46, Missouri 34.
Once again I have rambled on; I started this article not sure what
I was going to write so…see ya on the winter indoor courts.
2016 MOHPA Club/Team Benefit
2016 State Fair Tournament
The 13th Annual MOHPA Club/Team Benefit was held at the
Quail Ridge courts on Saturday, June 4. This year’s event had 93
entries, which was 40 more than 2015. We had 18 teams representing 8 clubs across the Show Me state, including 2 from Back
Yard Club in Glenn Allen, 1 from Independence, 3 from Capitol
City Club in Jefferson City, 1 from Liberty, 3 from Lake of the
Ozarks Club in Laurie, 6 from Quail Ridge Club in Wentzville, 1
from Lion’s Park Club in Peculiar, and 1 from Library Park Club
in Shelbina.
There was a tie for 1st place this year with 30 team points. We
broke the tie with the respective teams’ winning percentage. The
2nd-place team was Chuck’s Team from Quail Ridge. The winning
team was the Capitol City Club Ringers, with a 70.6% winning
percentage: Robyn Hendrix, Michelle Johnson, Bobby Schwent,
Jerry Weller, and Leon Wolken. Congratulations to all of you!
The MOHPA benefited to the tune of $1259.50. Thank you
all for your participation. The 14th Annual MOHPA Club/Team
Benefit will be held at the Quail Ridge courts in Wentzville on
June 3, 2017.
Mother Nature was kind to us. We started with sunny weather.
The Saturday morning classes had to deal with some drizzle, which
didn’t even get the concrete runways wet. The sun then came out
and the rest of the weekend was great.
We had 86 entries, which came close to filling it up. The Tournament Champion was Rich Altis. Our Class Champions were
Victoria Highley (B), Laura Johnson (C), Eileen Reeves (D), Dick
Byersdorfer (E), Leroy Leabo (F), Darrell Plowman (G), Brian
Koss (H), Mike Dentsbier (I), John Harrelson (J), and George
Chichura (K).
The MOHPA realized a profit of $485.53. This includes Junior
prize money not distributed and prize money donated back by some
of our pitchers.
I have decided after 9 years to resign as Tournament Director
for this event, and Jim Kinney has graciously volunteered to take
over in 2017. Jim has been my assistant for the past 9 years, so he
knows the ropes. Bob Bastel, who has served as judge for this event
for the past 14 years, has also opted to resign. We thank Bob for
his service.

Furn’s Turn
by Elizabeth Furner
It’s that time of year again. You know, the time strangers come to
your house with bags held out, and the homeowner is expected
to smile and kindly drop a treat inside. Well, we live out in the
middle of nowhere, and some strangers did indeed find our house
after all these years. Not the cute little hobgoblin type, but the big,
ugly, “Give me all your money” type! My husband and I returned
early from the State Tournament in time to meet perfect strangers
leaving our house. We spoke with them and realized that one of
the items they had made their own was a .357 Magnum. We did
not push the envelope too hard. We phoned the county sheriff,
but his 20-minute response time was too long, and the strangers
did not stay around for introductions. I tell you this story because
along with Russ’s weapon, the scoundrels took off with both of
our laptops. I was in a pickle as to how this issue of Shoe Biz was
to be. Thanks go to the
officers of MOHPA who
provided the tools necessary for publication. I saw
this picture of Bob Bloss
from State and just had to
laugh. After all, I’m too
big to cry.
This is the issue in
which we have an opportunity to brag about
the year’s activities. We
have had tournaments
that have provided great
financial support to the
MOPHA, and we have
end-of-season tournaments to demonstrate
great horseshoe abilities.

two more of our finest (page 8), and we take time to honor four of
our own who are no longer with us (pages 4-5).
I want to offer prayers to those who have been and are still going
through huge health problems. Just to name some of whom I have
been made aware: Nick DiRaimo, Harless Kampe, Jim Kinney, Jr.,
Mike Gillespie, Daphne Happy, Mike Grissom, Ruth and Frank
Hudson, Lyle and Ina Mae Samuelson, Joe and Eileen Barry, the
Frazee family, and the Karl Ratliff family. There are many more of
our horseshoe acquaintances who have been or are going through
emotional roller coasters. Just know, we may not know your name
but we pray that you come out better and stronger for having gone
through whatever it may be.
There was lots of help putting this issue together – not the least
of whom are the MOHPA officers. I want to thank the following
contributors – Mel Bruemmer, Laura Johnson, Jeanette Claas,
George Chichura, Nancy Gunter, Daphne Happy, Scott Raimer,
Tracy Gunter, Donna Bastel, Dee McIntire, Jim Bainter, Ron
Highley, Savanna Johnson, Larry Collette, the Gene Newkirk
family, Stan Griggs, and the gray-haired lady behind the locked
doors. This is the first issue I have edited that did not have Vicki
Winston’s input. I thank you, Vicki, for all you have done to make
this a successful newsletter, and I wish you only good things in
your retirement.
From My Court to Yours
by Jim Bainter, MOHPA Secretary
It’s been a long first year for this novice Secretary/Treasurer. Perhaps I will complete it with a
little hair left on my head. As many of you know, I am transitioning from manual bookkeeping to Quick Books accounting and
changing the data base from the DOS-based SHOES program to
Microsoft Access. It has not been an easy journey, but it will make
my routine workload easier and make any transition in the future
a more manageable task.
I would like to recap several changes that have been implemented or introduced during this year and announced at the
annual business meeting during our State Championships in
Jefferson City.
(1) Your NHPA/MOHPA membership number will never
change. It will remain with you even if you drop out of the sport
for a few years. (In the past, numbers were reassigned after being
delinquent for 2 or 3 years.)
(2) For those of you with Internet service, you have been automatically subscribed to the NHPA online newsletter Newsline.
It’s free. If you do not wish to receive it, you will have to unsubscribe. There’s lots of good horseshoe information provided every
2 months. If it doesn’t show up, check your spam file. It will be
sent to both 2016 and 2015 members in an effort to stimulate
continued participation.
(3) If you have shared your e-mail address with the MOHPA,
you will receive State Tournament and State Fair Tournament
lineups and important MOHPA information via the Internet. I
will mail lineups only to those who do not have an e-mail address
on file. Remember, the website will always have the most current
lineups available. I will only send the first copy to you unless there
are major changes. This direct e-mail will be sent from the same
site as Newsline. It’s easier for them to send bulk e-mail than it is
for me or the MOHPA Prez. If your e-mail program needs to have
my email address—[email protected]—entered in your address
book to receive e-mails from me, please do so now; otherwise, it
will reject back to me. This is particularly important for tournament lineups.
(4) Shoe Biz distribution. Each copy of Shoe Biz—printing and
mailing—costs $2.30. It is posted on the mohpa.us website around
the same day as it goes to the printer. Processing takes another 2
weeks minimum to get to the USPS. I realize that most pitchers do
not save much of the edition. Tournament schedules and entries,
banquet tickets, and the annual membership application are of
interest to most pitchers. I would like to propose that if you have
Internet access and have no desire to collect Shoe Biz editions that
you request to be removed from the mailing list. We can save a
lot of money and perhaps come up with ways to benefit MOHPA
pitchers. (Hint: the savings could help support an indoor facility
for state tournaments or …?) I review the mailing list data base
before each issue, and I only send one copy to each household. I
have no priorities as to who in the household receives the copy. It
could be man, woman, or child. If you have a preference, please let
me know. I do try to avoid sending them to young cadets.
(5) The NHPA has decided to use stickers on the back of your
membership cards to identify qualified judges in lieu of the stamp
that the MOHPA used a couple of years ago. In addition to taking the judging course offered by MOHPA or NHPA officers, you
must judge at least one tournament to qualify for the stamp and be
recognized as a MOHPA judges/trainers. The list is maintained by
our NHPA Regional Director Donna Bastel. Your 2017 card will
be identified if you qualify.
During the business meeting, minor changes to the MOHPA
bylaws and the State Bid letter were presented and approved. I have
copies of the NHPA RGS book (tan cover) dated July 16, 2016 (the
old one had a yellow cover) and copies of the Sanctioned Club/
League book, 8th edition (red cover), available for distribution.
If you are a tournament or league director and need a copy, please
let me know. Copies are limited, but I can get more. You can also
contact your Zone Director.
The 2017 NHPA cards (pink) will be available soon. I know
there will be a crunch of renewals and new members beginning
soon. I will give priority to the new members so they have a number to begin pitching in October. The renewals may be a little
slower, but I should be able to turn them around in 3 or 4 days.
Please be patient.
FYI: Adult membership increased from 656 to 670 this year.
Junior membership is 73; I don’t have a figure from 2015.
To all, I do not subscribe to the “that’s the way we have always
done it” philosophy. If there is anything I or the MOHPA officers can
do to make things better for you or the association, let me know.
Finally, I would like to thank all the volunteers who assisted the
officers during our recent championship tournament. We couldn’t
have done it without you. Also, a special thanks to Dorothy Munday and Charlene Outt, who tended the check-in table for most of
the tournament, Sharon Taylor, who also assisted and took care of
the banquet check-in, and Suzanne Evans, who took notes during
the membership meeting. Without them, I would have been lost.
Thank you, ladies.
Congratulations to all the Champions. That’s it from the
Pits.

Robert A. Kingsolver, Sr.
August 23, 1931 – July 21, 2016
By Jeanette Class
Bob Kingsolver, of Caulfield, Missouri, passed away
at Ozarks Medical Center
on July 21, 2016, at the age
of 84. Bob had open heart
surgery in May and was soon
doing well enough to return
home. On July 20, he wasn’t
feeling well and was taken
to the hospital. The next
day, Bob died from a blood
clot that had formed in the
back of his heart.
Bob was born in Clayton,
Ohio. After high school,
Bob served in the U.S. Air
Force from 1951 to 1955.
During the Korean War, Bob was a Top Gunner on the B-29 longrange bomber planes. He was stationed in the Philippines.
Music brought him together with his wife Esther. Her entire
family was composed of gospel singers. A co-worker of Bob’s sang
in a gospel quartet and invited Bob to a gospel convention at the
little country church. It was there that he met Esther. They dated
and married 4 months later, on September 28, 1963. After they
married, Bob put himself through night school while working full
time. He attended Southwest College and then the University of
Cincinnati to receive his teacher’s degree. After 5 years of teaching,
Bob decided that his true calling was farming and working in the
great outdoors. The couple saw in the Ohio Farm Journal there was
land for sale in southern Missouri at very reasonable prices. They
found a great place to live and raise a family of five, a 205-acre
farm in Caulfield. Along with raising children, they raised cattle
and hogs, and each held a full-time job.
When Bob was laid off from his daytime job, they moved to
Wichita, Kansas, and rented their dairy farm out to neighbors.
Bob found work with Lear Jet and Stephens Dairy. While living
in Wichita, Bob met some avid horseshoe pitchers like Marine
Tambour, Bill Whitely, Mary Ann Penninger, and Greg and Gene
Dixon. Being a county boy, Bob just naturally fell into horseshoe
pitching. He got an NHPA card, joined the Sunflower League, and
pitched with them from 1981 to 1989.
The Kingsolvers eventually moved back to Missouri and became
members of the Caulfield Community Center, which held many
activities. Bob saw a need for some sanctioned horseshoe courts in
this area. With the help of Dale Parrott, Dan Hobbs, Coy Turner,
and James Belt, they built 12 horseshoe courts and filled them with
Missouri clay. They would leave out at least 2 pairs of inexpensive
shoes at all times for passers-by who would like to stop and pitch a
4
few shoes. Bob helped to organize leagues in Caulfield, Gainesville,
and Bakersfield.
Bob attended at least eight World Horseshoe Tournaments
and won 1st place in his class in Wyoming, Ohio, and Minnesota.
He has pitched in many Missouri State Tournaments and earned
his share of trophies. Bob received Player of the Year twice, in
1998 and 2004, from the Southern Missouri–Northern Arkansas
organization. He has been a great promoter for the sport of horseshoes. Bob got many of his grandchildren interested in horseshoes.
Each year they would all come together at the State Tournament,
and you could see them all pitching away with Bob and Esther
standing nearby to support them. This year they were particularly
missed at the State Tournament. At his peak, Bob was pitching
65% to 70%. He was a tough competitor on the courts and a good
sportsman, winning or losing graciously. He enjoyed being a part
of this organization with so many good people as members. Bob’s
effort, energy, and dedication to horseshoes have helped to keep
horseshoes alive in southern Missouri.
Bob served his country, his community, his church, and his
family well. For those who knew him, he left us with many good
memories. Missouri horseshoe pitchers will miss his presence on
the courts. Bob will be especially missed by his wife, Esther, their
5 children, Robert, Patrick (Lori), John (Jamie), Leah (Bob) and
Chris (Gere), Renee James; 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many other relatives
and friends.
Val Eikel
August 23, 1925 – August 30, 2016
By Elizabeth Furner
Valerian (Val) Eikel was born August 23, 1925, on a small farm in
Bluffton, Missouri. He died August
30, 2016, in Mexico, Missouri. Val
spent his civilian life in central
Missouri.
Val was drafted during World
War II and spent most of his military
years overseas in the China, Burma,
and India Theater with the Army
Engineers. It was in the Army in
1944 that he was introduced to
horseshoes. He learned the art of a
good flip shoe. (Twenty years later
in Missouri, he became known as
one of the best 40-foot “Flip Shoe
Artists” in the state.) He was
discharged on May 16, 1946, and
returned home.
When he returned to Missouri,
he began a 40-year career with A.P.
Green Firebrick Co. He met and married Veneata Brookshier; they
were husband and wife for 66 years. Together they raised 3 sons and
a daughter. They spoke proudly of their children, 4 grandchildren,
and 8 great-grandchildren.
In 1964, Val purchased a pair of used Gordon horseshoes and the
rest, as they say, is history. He entered his first State Tournament
in 1967 and his first World Tournament in 1978. He traveled to
Des Moines, Iowa, and won first place in his class. In addition to
winning multiple trophies, plaques, and wreaths for his pitching
prowess, Val did a great deal to promote horseshoes. He helped
build courts on the A.P. Green recreation area and directed tournaments there for 4 years. He helped the Knights of Columbus in
Mexico, Missorui, to build courts, and he helped them to organize.
He worked with the city of Mexico in 1982 to build six courts at
Fairgrounds Park. He was the Tournament Director and organized
the “Mid-State Open” for 5 years. Val helped the Lions Club on
Highway 22 build four courts. He sat in on meetings with the
Montgomery County Fair Board and got them organized in the
construction of four courts. Val also served on the MOHPA Hall
of Fame Committee for 4 years.
During the 1998 State Tournament, Val was inducted into the
MOHPA Hall of Fame as both player and promoter. According to
Val, this was the “apex” of his horseshoe career.
Milburn L. “Boxie” Schrum, of Bismarck, Missouri, passed
away July 5, 2016, at Parkland Health Center in Farmington,
Missouri, of complications of heart disease at age 93. He was born
May 27, 1923, in Desloge, Missouri, to the late Grover and Flora
(Tiefenauer) Schrum. He married Velma (Vance) Schrum on July
5, 1943, and they were married for 73 years.
Boxie worked at the Doe Run Company for 41 years. He grew
up pitching horseshoes and played the game his whole life. He also
loved to play bass fiddle and guitar in the local area dance bands.
He was a member of the Park Hills Horseshoe Club and served as
its President for about 15 years until his health would no longer
allow him to do so. He was instrumental in securing a successful
bid to hold the 1998 MOHPA State Championships in Park Hills.
He was also very active in recruiting members to join the club.
He was an accomplished horseshoe pitcher and qualified for the
Championship Class in the Elder’s division a couple of times. He
will be missed by many.
Border War: Kansas vs Missouri
State Tournaments 2016 & 2017
The 2016 Kansas-Missouri Border War tournament was hosted by
the Bonner Springs Horseshoe Club on Saturday, September 17. At
the noon break, Missouri was ahead of Kansas 20-15. Kansas then
staged a huge comeback during the afternoon session to finish the
day ahead of Missouri by a score of 46-34.
This is the second consecutive victory for Kansas in this series,
but Missouri still holds a 4-2 advantage. Rhonda Hill was the highest over average, finishing the day 4.77 percentage points over her
entry average, and finished 1st in class F.
The 2016 State Tournament is in the books. We had a great weekend filled with great horseshoe pitching, excellent food, and terrific
friends. The Capital City Horseshoe Club would like to thank the
MOHPA Officers and key personnel for all of their support in putting on a fantastic tournament. More than anything, we would like
to thank all the great players who made the trip to Jefferson City.
You made it a very successful event and we appreciate you.
The 2017 season will bring the Championships back to Jefferson
City. We plan to make it a great experience. Make your plans early
to be part of the fun in 2017. Labor Day weekend will once again
bring a great Horseshoe Festival to the Capital City.

Missouri Horseshoe Club News
Peculiar Lions Park Horseshoe Club
by George Chichura
Fall has arrived as we witness the stunning beauty
of the Ozark forests and the beautiful scenic
places in all of Missouri. Our playing season in
Peculiar has ended for the year. We are already
planning for next year and have gained a few
new players.
Our club members have done very well in
tournaments this summer. At the Missouri
State Fair, three 1st place winners were Victoria
Highley, Larry Leabo, and George Chichura. Peculiar Lions Park
Club had eight participants (44%) at the World Tournament in
Montgomery, Alabama. The Missouri Junior Player of the year
was our own Warren Highley. Memo Ramirez was selected for
3rd place honors. At the Peculiar Memorial Tournament, Ralph
Richardson was honored to receive the memorial brick at the
NHPA Hall of Fame.
Our year-end tournament ended with Victoria Highley winning
1st place, John Michaels 2nd, and Terry Freeman 3rd. After the
completion of both summer leagues, our league champions were
Ron and Terry Highley.
My prediction for Missouri winning the Border War trophy was
wrong. Kansas beat Missouri 46–34. We had a lot of fun and the
sportsmanship shown on both sides was great! For example, one
Missouri player was 5-0 until his last game with a fellow Missouri
player. Missouri could have “cheated” and let him win, but it ended
up a three-way tie at 5-1, so Kansas got the win.
The leaves are starting to change colors. Get away from the TV
and the computer and enjoy the scenery and beauty of Missouri.
Sign up for a tournament away from home and travel a scenic route
for an enjoyable weekend. Remember, when times get tough, you
can always move in with your parents—unless they are already
living with theirs.
Independence Horseshoe Club
by Nancy Gunter
The Independence Horseshoe Club 2016 summer season has come to an end. We all know
how hard it is sometimes to juggle work, family,
school, vacations, and summertime activities.
We are grateful to all of those who squeezed in a night each week
to come join us in some fun and horseshoe fellowship.
We started our summer league with many new pitchers and
welcomed back a few former members. It didn’t take long for some
of our newbies to get hooked and try their hand at pitching in
tournament play. We hosted the annual Spring Open and State
Warm-up tournaments this year and had good turnouts. The IHC
had a good showing in this year’s State and World Tournaments,
as well. Our congratulations go to our own Al Gwinn, who was
inducted into the MOHPA Hall of Fame (see page 8). Al has been
a member since 1982, and this is a wonderful accomplishment. We
6
also had two members receive their 30-year membership patches
with the MOHPA, Ray Phelps and Tony Bootka.
Our Summer league teams ended with Frank Hunt and Roy
Flatt taking 1st place, Michael Gillespie and Yvonne Hanson
taking 2nd, and Perry Mann and George Hanson taking 3rd. Our
end-of-league tournament playoffs provided some exciting games.
The Championship game came down to the winner of the Class B
playoff, Chuck Stanway, pitching against the winner of the Class
A playoff, Al Gwinn. I will add that this was Chuck’s first year of
pitching. Chuck surely gave Al a run for his money, but Al came
out victorious.
Our Sportsman of the Year Award went to Pam Bailey. The
Rookie of the Year Award went to Chuck Stanway. We had a
special award this year—the Effort Award—which was given to
Sarah Johnson. Sarah showed great improvement this summer and
is always trying her best.
We look forward to the next summer of pitching.
Capital City Horseshoe Club
by Mel Bruemmer
What a summer in Jefferson City. I’m sure you’ve
heard the expression: “Good Lord willing and the
creek don’t rise.” Well, it rose fast, twice! The
flash floods made for a lot of extra work. The State
Tournament and all of our summer events survived
and prospered. Along with hosting the State Tournament, we had 10 club tournaments and completed 2 leagues.
The State Tournament brought us a State Champion for the third
straight year as Leon Wolken took home the cadet title.
The Spring league winners were Mel Bruemmer (1st), Steve
Johnson (2nd), Scott Wolken (3rd), and Michelle Johnson (4th).
The Summer League winners were James Driver (1st), Jerry Weller
(2nd), Jody Qualls (3rd), and Billy Knife (4th).
The club welcomes our members Sadie Wolken, Michelle
Johnson, Bruce Hassler, Bobby Gadd, Howard Ray, Jeff Meredith,
and Jerry Siebeneck. Special congratulations go to our MOHPA
Club Team Champion winners Robyn Hendrix, Michelle Johnson,
Bobby Schwent, Jerry Weller, and Leon Wolken. Steve Johnson
also deserves special congratulations for being part of the Team
World champions for 2016, making it two in a row!
The Capital City Horseshoe Club–Quail Ridge Horseshoe
Club Challenge was held on September 25. Capital City came
out on top for the first time in our long rivalry with our friends
from the east.
We are very excited to be hosting the 2017 Missouri State
tournament. Make plans to come to the Capital!
Strawberry Shed Horseshoe Club
By Tracy Archer
Strawberry planting has been completed at the shed (2000 plants!);
now on to other projects—and we all know there are always plenty
of those. One of the next milestones is the initial tournament of
the 2016-2017 winter season, coming up the first weekend in November. Just a few things on the ‘to-do’ list around the shed before
the arrival of our tournament guests. Frank and Ruth constantly
keep it maintained and in top-notch condition, so there is not that
much to attend to. A few of us have practiced weekly all summer
long, so we have kept the clay soft and the rust knocked off the
stakes. Maybe we can consider that a part of our contribution to
the ‘sprucing up’. 
We look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming tournaments,
both here and there. Come pitch with us; there is always room for
one more.
was a bright sunshiny fall day. I didn’t learn of the outcome of the
tournament because we left, but I think Quail Ridge lost. We were
behind all day. We had a great time, win or lose.
On October 2-3, Quail Ridge hosted the NHPA Sanctioned
Club/League Tournament with 22 teams from various states around
the Midwest. It was a wonderful 2-day event under the direction of
Jerry Smith and Dave Sidles. The teams from Colorado and Iowa
had a playoff for first place, and the Iowa team was the victor.
Don’t forget to check out the tournament schedule in this issue
of Shoe Biz (page 10). We have lots of tournaments planned for
fall and winter. We hope you will be able to attend at least some
of these. Looking forward to your visits. Ringers to all!

We certainly had a wet 2016 summer; at least
the grass stayed green. It did cause a lot of extra
mowing. On the dark side, it was a terrifically
hot, humid summer. How hot was it? It was so
hot the cows were giving evaporated milk!
We haven’t had any summer tournaments at
Quail Ridge the past few years because it was
hard to get enough people to fill up a tournament. This year we
tried again to hold the Red, White & Blue Tournament and were
able to have 5 classes, thanks to our new members. We also held a
small junior tournament that the kids really enjoyed (and so did I).
We hosted the 2016 MOHPA Team Benefit Tournament in June
and will be hosting this tournament again next year.
Most of our members were busy attending tournaments out-oftown this summer, including the World Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama, the State Fair Horseshoe Tournament in Sedalia, and
the MOPHA State Tournament in Jefferson City. Congratulations
to all who were winners at these tournaments, and a big thank you
to all who participated.
Capital City Horseshoe Club hosted the MOHPA State Tournament this year and did a wonderful job. The first two days Mother
Nature was good to us with wonderful weather, but then it heated
up on Sunday and Monday. Congratulations to all of our state
champions. It was an exciting weekend, especially when we went
on the ghost tour through the State Penitentiary. I didn’t see any
ghosts, but it was sure creepy going there in the dark.
During September, we had 35 business leaders visit the Hall of
Fame. We gave them the history of the Hall of Fame and how it
came to be located in Wentzville. Later, they were given a tour of
the Hall of Fame room and did some pitching on the courts. This
was a good way to give the sport of horseshoes more publicity and
hopefully some sponsorship for future tournaments.
We have some new league directors this year for the Monday
Night Mixed League. Daryl and Heather Miller, who were married
this past April, will be replacing Ginny Weiss. Ginny has been the
director for 8 years, and we thank her for going above and beyond
her duties. At our recent club meeting, two club officers, 1st VicePresident Norm Pierce and Secretary Gary Bailey were re-elected
by acclamation. They will each be serving another 2-year term.
To try and recruit new members, our club will be offering free play
during the summer months of June, July, and August.
We traveled to Jefferson City for the second time in September
for some friendly rivalry from Capital City on September 25. It

Our 2016 league had 12 participants. We were very pleased to welcome a new member, Randy Parton. We are happy that our league
director, Russell Ebbing, and others were successful in recruiting
him after his long absence from the MOHPA. As was the case last
season, we followed a round-robin format in which each member
had the opportunity to play each of the other 11 members during
the season with 3 points at stake. One point was earned for each
50 shoe count all game, and one point was earned for the most
total points for the two-game match each night. Our 2016 league
champion was Roger Otto. It came down to the final game on the
final night to decide.
The sportsmanship recipient, as chosen by the membership,
was Bryan Billingsley. It was richly deserved. He has been a tremendous asset to our club. The rookie of the year, also chosen by
the members, went to Randy Parton. Again, Randy is considered
a rookie only because he is new to our club. He is not new to the
game of horseshoes. He was firmly in the chase for the league
championship. He had one outstanding evening performance this
season when he earned 106 points.
We are all looking forward to another season of pitching horseshoes in Shelbina.
Russell Ebbing presents the championship to Roger Otto.

Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame: New Inductees
by Dee McIntire
The Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame is our opportunity to recognize the best of the best in our sport. This recognition
can be for proficiency in sport execution or excellence in broadcasting the news of the biggest secret in sports—this is not your
grandfather’s game of horseshoes.
Please join us in congratulating Ray Plute and Alvin Gwinn as
the newest members of the Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of
Fame. They were inducted at the banquet during the 2016 State
Tournament.
forget a game he played against World’s great Elmer Hohl. The
score was Plute 51 (at 81.6%) and Hohl 33 (at 73.2%). He also
defeated Jim Kinsey of Ohio 51-35 and Ralph Maddox of West
Virginia 50-46. These were great wins. He finished this tournament
with a 23-12 record, for a tournament average of 75.4% based on
35 games and 2700 shoes!
Ray also participates in other sports. He bowls and was inducted
into the St. Louis Bowling Hall of Fame in 1992. When he played
golf, he won many tournaments as well.
Ray married his wife Marjorie in 1956, and will soon celebrate
their 60th wedding anniversary. Ray and Marjorie have 2 sons.
We thank Ray for setting such an example of craftsmanship for his
sport. Please congratulate Ray next time you see him.

Ray Plute—Player Category
Ray Plute is a 25-year member of MOHPA and has a very impressive record. He was a member of the NHPA from 1966 through
1979, then returned to horseshoes in 2004 and has been pitching
ever since.
Ray began his pitching career in 1957, when he started working
at the Town & Country shoe factory. He noticed other employees
pitching horseshoes during the noon hour and got hooked. Soon
afterward, he talked the City Council into installing 6 courts in
Grover Park, where they conducted a league and tournaments. Ray
didn’t start pitching in other towns until 1960, each year pitching
a little better until he was pitching in A Class.
In 1979, Ray traded in his horseshoes for a little white ball and
chased it over the greens for the next 25 years. Then in 2004, he
decided he missed horseshoes and started pitching again. He went
primarily to Liberty and Independence to pitch in tournaments. In
2006, he moved up to the 30-foot division and continues to give
A Class players a run for their money.
He competed in the State Tournament Men’s Championship
Class for 11 consecutive years and compiled a winning record
and an overall ringer percentage over 60% in 10 of those years.
In 1979, he averaged 70% ringers with his winning record and an
overall average over 63%, which ranked 11th all time. Ray also
tied for 1st in the Missouri Elders Championship in 2007 and
placed 2nd in 2009.
Ray pitched in several World Tournaments. In 1976, he went
to Levittown, Pennsylania, and landed himself a spot in the Men’s
World Championship Class. He placed 11th, but he will never

Alvin has been a member of MOHPA since 1982 and has served
in various officer positions through the years as a member of the
Independence Horseshoe Club. Al is a very dedicated horseshoe
pitcher who is willing to go above and beyond to support the sport.
He has visited Blue Springs High School to teach the PE classes
how to pitch horseshoes and set up tournaments.
Since 2008, Al has been a big contributor and organizer for
the Special Olympics at the Independence Courts. He has been
involved in promoting the Corporate Challenge for horseshoe
pitching at the Independence Courts. He is there during the competition, helping to organize and providing horseshoes for those
in need. The Corporate Challenge is a program sponsored by area
corporations that involves many sports, including horseshoes, and
exposes a lot of potential players to our sport. In 2007, Al took
the helm and worked with area horseshoe clubs in bidding for and
hosting the State Tournament at McCoy Park. Alvin’s efforts assured a great tournament.
As a pitcher at the Independence club, he has been Grand
Champion 4 times and runner-up numerous times. Al has pitched
in most State Tournaments since 1991 and won his class in 1991,
1997, and 2000. Al has also pitched in multiple World Tournaments
since 1986. In the 1998 World Tournament in Nebraska he won 1st
in his class. Al not only pitches Summer league in Independence,
but also Fall and Winter leagues at the Don Harris Arena with the
Heart of America Club. He pitches in most area tournaments.
Many of you know all the work behind the scenes that it takes
to keep up the courts and make sure that the equipment makes it
out for all the pitchers. Alvin is one of those people who is always
there to help make whatever is needed happen at the Independence
Courts, whether with his leadership skills, his organizational skills,
or just doing it himself.
Alvin and his lovely wife Daisy reside in Independence. They
have been married 60 years and have 4 children. Al does beautiful wood working and anything else he needs to do to keep Daisy
happy. Alvin has a 1930 Model A Ford that he has owned since
1968. Alvin is a special person, always supportive of the game of
horseshoes or its participants. He is truly a gentleman. Next time
you see Al, congratulate him for being inducted into the Missouri
Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame for 2016.
With Humility, I Accept
Delivered by Alvin Gwinn, written by Wendy Gwinn
(This acceptance speech was given by Al Gwinn during his presentation
as a Hall of Fame Inductee at the 2016 Banquet.)

Just got home from the Heart of America
Tournament at the Don Harris Indoor
Arena and realized there is a tournament
every other Saturday until after the first
of December. Check the tournament
schedule published on the MOHPA website or on page 10 of this
issue of Shoe Biz and contact the Tournament Director listed to
participate! Hope to see everyone there!
Our Monday morning and Tuesday evening summer leagues
have been put to bed with new Champions being crowned. Monday’s Champions are Charlie Baker, Elwyn Cooper, John Kiser, and
Joe Barry, who finished 3 points ahead of 2nd place finishers Chuck
Volpi, Diane Kiser, Darrell Pulliam, and a dummy. (No, really, they
came in second with just three people on their team!) Trailing by
only a half point, the 3rd-place team was Wayne Dusenbery, Jana
Miller, Larry Anderson, and Tim Fox.
The Champions of the Tuesday league were Denise Bloss, Roy
Flatt, Joe Barry, and Sarah Kane, who finished 4 points ahead of
2nd place finishers, Gregg Craven, Audra Craven, John Steward,
and Keith Johnson. Again, just one half point behind was the
3rd-place team of Gina Baker, Eddie Shroyer, Megan McLeod,
and Kathy Steward.
We started off our fall league by welcoming six new pitchers…
and three of them are named BOB!!! Happy pitching to Joe Bales,
Bob Grabau, Bob Mitchell, Bob Mullin, Chadwick Oldham, and
Mike Young. With existing members Bob Bloss, Bob Boone, Bobby
Johnson, and Robert Johnson, you could walk into the arena and
yell “HEY, BOB!” and turn a whole lot of heads.
This past May, western Missouri hosted eastern Missouri at
the Harris Arena. On June 18, the Wilbur Hodgson Memorial
Tournament was held at Stocksdale Park to honor the founder of
the Liberty Horseshoe Club. The proceeds from this tournament
provide the bulk of the working capital for the club. Fifty-three
pitchers participated in 9 classes held in 3 sessions. The following
were the class Champions: A: Gregg Craven, B: Keith Peck, C:
Elwyn Cooper, D: Cliff Pierce, E: Denise Haye, F: Richard Schmidt,
G: Keith Johnson, H: Warren James Highley, and I: Tom Kane.
The week of June 27, 20 Junior pitchers met each morning to
pitch in the annual Liberty Junior League. The pitchers were organized into 4 teams. Team 2 consisted of Warren James Highley,
Zane Morgan, Audrey Caravello, Dalton Candler, and Annabelle
Gray. They finished with 37 wins and were the League Champions.
Team 3 consisted of Cooper Phipps, Marshall Morgan, Connor
Redlich, Trent Morgan, and Lauren Furner. They finished with
29 wins and took 2nd place. Team 4 consisted of Memo Ramirez,
Audrey Jackson, Adrianna Furner, Christopher Redlich, and Ashley Candler. Team 1 consisted of Devin Wetzel, Merissa Caravello,
Eli DeLaCruz, Walker Candler, and June Johnson. Team 4 and
Team 1 tied, but since Team 4 won more games in the two teams’
head-to-head matches, Team 4 was awarded 3rd place and Team
1 was awarded 4th place.
On July 16, our World Warm-Up Tournament provided ‘practice’ for 44 participants in 7 classes. The following were the class
Champions: A: Gregg Craven, B: Brady Craven, C: Johnna Bales,
D: Roy Flatt, E: Warren James Highley, F: Megan McLeod, and G:
Memo Ramirez. More practice for 41 pitchers in 6 classes came
in the form of the State Warm-up Tournament on August 27.
The following were the class Champions: A: Michael Bowman,
B: Nancy Gunter, C: Ray Phelps, D: Roy Flatt, E: Dennis Bales,
and F: Sandra Couch.
Liberty Horseshoe Club’s annual combination business meeting and banquet was held at the Don Harris Arena on September
13. The 2-year office terms of President Dee McIntire, Secretary/
Treasurer Daphne Happy, and League Director Gregg Craven
expired this year. A motion was made and seconded to re-elect
the entire slate by acclamation, and the motion carried. The new
Junior Rookie of the year was Sarah Kane, and the new Adult
Rookie of the year was Chuck Volpi.
To celebrate the end of Summer Leagues, the annual tournament was held September 19, 20, and 24. Monday’s Class winners
were Devin Wetzel, Jim Moore, and Joe Barry. Tuesday’s Class
winners were Savanna Johnson, Becky Jackson, and Denise Bloss.
Saturday morning’s Class winners were Angie DiRaimo and Hannah Johnson. On Saturday afternoon, the class winners from all
three days (with Mike Crouch substituting for Jim Moore) drew for
placement in brackets to determine the Tournament Champion.
The undisputed Champion with 3 wins and 0 losses was Angie
DiRaimo. Congratulations!!!
Member Audra Craven was laid-up for a few weeks with a back
injury after coming out on the short end of a tussle with a tree, a
ladder, and the ground while picking cherries. We’re glad to see that
she made it back in time for the World and State Tournaments!
Mike Grissom continues to wage his battle with bladder cancer.
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

By Mel Bruemmer
Congratulations to the 2016 Team World Champions, Missouri
Team 1: Steve Johnson, Rich Altis, Gregg Craven, and Mick
Gillette! This makes two world championships in a row for them.
What an accomplishment!
That’s not all—for the first time ever, two Missouri teams made
the finals. Fourth-place went to Missouri Team 2: James Driver, Ed
Griffith, John Sapper, and Jim Howard. Way to go, Missouri team
2! We will go for a three-peat in 2017. Come join the fun!

Junior Spotlight: Sophie Craven
By Savanna Johnson
Sophie Craven is the focus of our Spotlight this issue. Sophie
was introduced to the MOHPA by her grandparents, Gregg and
Audra Craven. Gregg has been pitching with us basically forever
and brought Sophie into it as soon as possible. Now, Sophie is 15
years old and a Sophomore at Faith Christian Academy. She, like
most of us, says her favorite part about horseshoes is the people.
Who could argue with that?
Her first World Tournament was in Iowa in 2010. She won second place in Cadets class B. She has since competed in five more, in
Louisiana, Tennessee, New York, Kansas, and Alabama. Every year
she also participates in the Junior League run by her grandpa.
Many of you probably know her because she has pitched with
us for a very long time, but what you may not know is that besides
pitching, she also loves artwork and playing the piano. When she
gets older, she wants to run her own coffee shop! Sophie is a very
sweet girl who we have had the pleasure of pitching with for quite
some time, and hopefully we’ll continue to see her around!
Sophie Craven at the Juniors-Only Tournament, Liberty, July 2009 (left),
and the Missouri State Tournament, Jefferson City, Sept. 2016 (right).
There’s Another Johnson on the Courts
By Laura Johnson, Publicity Director
June Johnson, 8-year-old granddaughter of Keith and Laura Johnson, pitched in the Liberty Junior League this summer, and now she’s pitching in her first tournament. She won 7 of her 15 games
in the league, ending with a 1.57 ringer percentage. She finished one game with 8.82 percent.
She asked her Grampa if she could pitch in his tournament (the State Warm-Up), and of
course he said yes. She pitched her first game against another cadet, Madisen Gwinn. Although
June got the first point of the game and two ringers, Maddy won with a total score of 11/21. The
rest of the class consisted of three men and one woman. June finished with 35 total points, a 3.13
ringer percentage, and no wins.
June really wanted to pitch in the State Tournament this year, but her parents already had a
Branson vacation planned for that time. I guarantee you will see this little girl on the courts soon.
June is the catcher on her softball team and also enjoys playing basketball. She loves her Royals, and
can list all the players and their positions on the team. She is truly a competitive all-sport girl.

By Elwyn Cooper
This scoring sheet is designed for either cancellation or count-all scoring.
All scores are entered on
the sheet using numbers
only, except when there is
no score or no dead ringers
a dash (—) may be used
instead of zero (0).
I filled in a sheet showing the cancellation scoring. I believe this is easy
to follow. This sheet has a
total of six columns, while
the NHPA’s cancellation
sheet has eleven. I offer
this sheet as an alternative.
Should you want access to
a blank sheet, contact me.
The contact information
is the same as that shown
for the Killgore Memorial
Tournament in November (see the Tournament
Schedule on page 10).

A Family Affair
By Elizabeth Furner
This past summer saw Stocksdale Park and the Liberty Horseshoe
Club sponsor a weeklong Junior League with 20 pitchers and 2
honorary pitchers. With the exception of Audrey Jackson (a neighbor to a Liberty Club member), all of the pitchers were related to
Liberty Club members. The young people met each morning in the
park for 5 days. Pitching began at 9:00 am. For the distances that
some of the young people travelled, the pitchers and kinfolk had
18
to be up and moving early. (I should add that one of those days had
to be pitched inside Don Harris Arena because of rain.)
Check out Elizabeth Furner with Eli, Lauren, and Adrianna.
Gregg, Brady, and Audra Craven proudly claim Audrey and Merissa.
Danny and Kathy Wetzel had Devin, Cooper, Ashely, Walker, and
Dalton. Mick Crouch proudly brought Annabelle, Zane, Marshall,
and Trent. Victoria Highley awoke Memo and Warren in the wee
hours. Finally, Grandpa Showen (Audra Craven’s brother) came
all the way from Oregon with Chris and Conner.
2017 Membership Application
Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Association
National Horseshoe Pitchers Association
The NHPA card is a combined membership in your state and national horseshoe pitching associations. This card
entitles you to participate in NHPA-sanctioned play throughout the United States and much of Canada, wherever
you meet the entry requirements for the event. You must pay your dues through the state charter where you maintain
legal residence as determined by voting, tax, and/or drivers license laws. Dues are based on the calendar year. New
members may pay next year’s dues after October 1 of the current year and will be eligible to participate in sanctioned
events the final 3 months of the current year, as well as all of the next year.
As a member of the Missouri Charter, you will receive Shoe Biz three times a year free of charge. This will keep
you informed of events within our state. Our statistician will be recording your pitching stats from all sanctioned
events and will be forwarding these stats to the NHPA stats headquarters, called NatStats. These stats are updated
weekly and can be accessed through either the NHPA or the MOHPA websites. To make all of this possible, your
NHPA card will have six digits followed by two decimals. Missouri is region 19, followed by four digits, which are
your number. The two decimals represent the calendar year. The decimal and color of the NHPA card change
each year. Your number will remain with you as long as you reside in Missouri and continue to maintain your
membership. If you ever lose your NHPA card, the charter secretary will issue you a duplicate card free of charge.
You need only notify him.
Please fill in all information on the form below that applies to you and mail the application and total amount of
dues to the MOHPA Sec/Treas. (address below) Please make checks payable to: MOHPA.
