GRATEFUL
2012 Annual Report
WELCOME
Dear Friends:
Another year has passed. So much generosity, such stirring acts of kindness, so many lives
touched and made better, thanks to the special people in our greater community who open
their hearts and give. As we look back on 2012, we feel a sense of wonder at the things we
have accomplished. The Cymbaluk Medical Tower has now been open for nearly two years,
providing a new level of patient-care excellence to the families in our region.
The Campaign for Providence continued into its fourth year, led by a faithful and determined
army of more than 70 volunteers. We will always remember 2012 as a time of unprecedented
volunteer and community response to our call for support of the Tower and the Providence
mission. We are thankful for the individuals, businesses and physician partners who
enthusiastically joined our cause and represent a new generation of supporters.
Two of our most cherished traditions—The Epicurean Affair and Festival of Trees—together
raised more than $770,000 for the Providence General Foundation. There was also amazing
support from within. The annual Employee Campaign raised more than $300,000 of support
for both Providence and our local United Way, with higher-than-ever participation levels
among staff.
In addition, we welcomed three new members to the Providence General Foundation Board
of Directors —Shirley Ayres, Janice Halladay, and Dr. Patrick Ryan— adding new energy,
ideas and expertise to our already strong group of community and physician leaders.
And finally, an achievement so critical for our mission: In 2012, we disbursed a recordlevel amount of support for the Medical Center to help operate dozens of programs that
directly benefit patients. Approximately $3 million was transferred to Providence Regional
Medical Center Everett and sent directly to critical programs in areas ranging from nursing
education, to patient assistance, to the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic for the medically
underserved, as well as for capital projects, including the new Cymbaluk Medical Tower.
We want to express our sincere gratitude for your partnership and generosity. You stand
beside us as stewards for the future health of our community. Thank you for your trust and
personal investment in the mission and work of Providence.
Sincerely,
harv jubierandy petty

ACCESS
3
in 2002, two years before the Providence
Everett Healthcare Clinic opened, local
healthcare leaders observed an emerging
need to improve access to primary healthcare in this community. Patients with no
healthcare insurance, Medicaid or Medicare
had few to no places to turn—other than
an Emergency Department—for primary
care. This trend was leaving large numbers
of residents underserved and vulnerable.
When the Clinic opened in early 2004
it had two primary goals: to provide
access to all people in our community
who needed health care, regardless of
their financial situation, and to provide
training for future healthcare providers
interested in caring for the underserved.
unique approach ,
exceptional support
The Clinic offers a unique model of care
that provides high-quality, cost-effective,
evidence-based primary healthcare services,
utilizing mid-level professionals such as
family and adult nurse practitioners, all
under the supervision of a family practice
physician medical director. The program
integrates mental and behavioral health
with primary care services—providing
a comprehensive model of care that is
critical for patients, but very hard to find
in today’s healthcare environment.
Also, the Clinic has been very fortunate
to have several physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses from the community
donate their time at the Clinic, providing additional primary care and specialty care access to patients in need.
Over the years, generous donors have stepped forward to help the Clinic
expand and improve to better meet the
never-ending need of the medically
underserved. Special thanks to support
from United Way of Snohomish County
for its three-year, $90,000 grant to help
fund the hiring of a mental health coordinator; to the EverTrust Foundation
for supporting the salary of a psychiatric
nurse practitioner; and to the Employees
Community Fund of Boeing Puget
Sound for being an instrumental force with
its support for the Clinic’s expansions.
Dozens of other generous donors have
made a further impact with their one-time
and regular contributions. This steadfast
support—from people who understand the
difficulty facing the underserved families in
our community and the critical importance
of keeping people healthy for the good of
the community—have made it possible
for the Clinic to carry out its mission.
ACCESS
a new chapter
In spring 2013, the Providence Everett Healthcare Clinic will
move into a larger space in the new Health Sciences Building
on the Everett Community College (EvCC) campus.
This move offers the opportunity to partner with EvCC
in an innovative and synergistic way. Students pursuing
degrees in medical assisting and other health professions
will gain practical experience at the clinic, while extending
the capacity for regular clinical staff to care for patients. The
carefully designed space will help maximize patient flow and
privacy, allow more patient visits, and offer much-needed
room to develop the integrated mental health program.
5
According to the Clinic’s medical director, Dr. Marcia
Wharton, the larger facility will also better position the
clinic to weather the turbulent healthcare changes on the
horizon. Healthcare reform and state-level changes will
potentially double the number of patients covered by
Medicaid; yet low Medicaid reimbursement rates will mean
even more limited access for these patients. This could result
in an increase in Medicaid patient visits to the Clinic.
“We’re never worried about having enough patients,”
Dr. Wharton says. “We’re one of few facilities in this
region that will take all patients regardless of their ability
to pay, and the numbers can feel overwhelming at times.
Thankfully, many generous people in the community want to
help. Without their support, we couldn’t do what we do.” Patient exam room at new location

dawn dickson is a social worker at the
Providence Regional Cancer Partnership.
She sees the effects of cancer every day—
not only on her clients’ physical state, but
on their minds and in their spirits. A cancer
diagnosis can be challenging enough to
cope with physically, but it can be equally
devastating financially for some patients.
“Many patients have family members
who rely on them financially, and that
doesn’t stop when cancer takes away your
income,” Dawn says. “For some, a cancer
diagnosis is just one of many trials. I
have witnessed so many heart-wrenching
stories—cancer, combined with a spouse
leaving, job loss, poverty, homelessness—
life is not always kind.”
More than 35 years ago, family and friends
of Linda Baltzell, who died of cancer, made
a one-time donation to Providence General
Foundation to seed a cancer patient
assistance fund in her name to honor her
memory. The primary purpose of the fund
was to help patients and their families who
encounter financial crisis as a result of their
cancer treatment.
The fund, now known as the Linda
Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund,
has been a blessing for patients through
the years, helping to pay for things such
as prescriptions, utilities, transportation,
food and other critical expenses when the
financial strain that can come with the
disease threatens to push some families
over the edge. In 2012 alone, nearly
$50,000 was distributed to cancer
patients in need.
Cancer Assistance Fund recipients come
from all different walks of life and all
types of cancer diagnoses, but they have
one thing in common: being cared for by
Providence. Dawn and her team evaluate
each patient request for assistance, but
very rarely do they encounter a situation
where there is not a legitimate need.
“People are proud, as a rule,” Dawn says.
“I tell them—if there was ever a time in
your life when it was okay to ask for help,
it’s now.”
GRATEFUL
In 2012, nearly $40,000 was raised to benefit the Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, and more than half of
that amount came from community events raising funds on behalf of the Providence General Foundation.
Included in these events were the 2012 Everett Golf and Country Club Women’s Division Annual Golf
Tournament, which raised $15,000. The annual Columbia Funding Mortgage Run of the Mill 5K Race
contributed $10,500. The first-annual Wheels on the Waterfront Classic Car Show raised $1,700.
And the Everett Sertoma Club’s Annual Golf Tournament donated $1,000.
A sincere thank you to the many supporters and event organizers who make such a tremendous
difference in the lives of cancer patients in need, year after year.
HOPE
Jamie and Jeff attended the 2011 and 2012 Silvertips Pink the Rink events and
Jamie was honored both times as a survivor during the national anthem.
9
breast cancer can usually be successfully treated when it’s detected early, and
regular screening mammograms are one
of our most powerful tools in this battle.
Unfortunately, some women don’t get this
potentially lifesaving screening because they
lack insurance coverage and cannot afford
the cost of a mammogram. Daily financial
demands—like rent, utilities, and groceries—sometimes take precedence.
This could have been the story for Jamie—
a self-employed, 42-year-old Stanwood
resident. For Jamie and her husband Jeff,
health insurance was out of their financial
reach. But Jamie chose not to forgo her
preventative annual physical exam, even
though she didn’t have insurance. This
decision may have saved her life.
Because of Jamie’s age, her doctor suggested
that she have a routine screening mammogram, another out-of-pocket expense she
didn’t anticipate. But to Jamie’s surprise, she
was recommended for a free mammogram
program funded by the Providence General
Foundation’s Comprehensive Breast Center
Mammography Fund and a partner organization called Citrine Health.
That doctor’s referral, and the mammogram
provided at no cost to her, were more
crucial than anyone could have imagined.
As it turned out, the mammogram results
were not normal, and they led to a shocking
diagnosis. “At age 40, I had Stage 2 breast
cancer,” Jamie says. “Out of the blue —
I couldn’t believe it.”
Fortunately, Jamie was not one of the
thousands of women who delay or
completely forgo a screening mammogram
due to cost. For some of those women,
when cancer is found, it’s too late. Jamie
went through surgery, chemotherapy and
radiation. Much of her treatment was paid
through a program administered by Citrine
Health, a partner agency that oversees state
funds and helps enroll uninsured breast
cancer patients in Medicaid coverage.
Together, the Providence Mammogram
Fund and the Citrine Health program are
saving lives in our community.
Jamie is now a two-year breast cancer
survivor. Both she and Jeff believe that
detecting the cancer early helped to tip the
odds in their favor. “We are so thankful,”
Jamie says. “I’m alive, I’m strong.”
GRATEFUL
In 2012, more than $105,000 was raised to support Providence Breast Center initiatives, including the
Free Mammography Fund. In October, the annual Silvertips Pink the Rink hockey event raised more than
$80,000 for free mammograms, which included a generous donation from the Safeway Foundation—a
proud Pink the Rink sponsor. In addition, the first annual Stick it to Breast Cancer event was held by the
Washington Stealth Lacrosse team in March, raising $25,000 for the Providence Comprehensive Breast
Center Fund to help provide breast cancer screening, education, and survivor support.
A sincere thank you to the Everett Silvertips, Safeway Stores, and the Washington Stealth for making such
a significant impact in the fight against breast cancer in our community.
MERRIMENT
More than 17 trees are artfully designed by generous and
talented designers who volunteer their time to help ensure
the success of Festival of Trees every year.
11
as its name implies, the Festival of Trees is a
joyful affair. Holiday food, cocktails, musical
performances, spectacularly decorated trees
and wreaths. At this event, it would be hard
not to Be Merry—the theme for the 2012
Festival of Trees.
The 2012 Festival reflected this bright,
optimistic tone. Jim and Jan Gaffney served
as the festival’s chairs. Jim founded Everettbased Gaffney Construction nearly 40 years
ago, and today it is one of the area’s premier
construction companies. Following the path
of her mother, Jan has been involved with
Providence and its boards for more than 30
years. “This year we wanted to add a joyful
twist to the Festival,” Jan says. “The past few
years have been so difficult with the local
economy; we wanted people to feel a sense
of joy and happiness when they walked in
the room.”
And people did. As always, the trees took
center stage. Throughout the weeklong
event, nearly 5,000 people made their way
through the Edward D. Hansen Conference
Center at the Everett Comcast Arena to
Festival Chairs Jan & Jim Gaffney
experience the beautiful holiday décor and
help support Providence Children’s Services.
Festival participants donated a record
$660,000 in 2012, bringing the cumulative
total raised over the past 27 years to more
than $6 million in support of Providence
programs benefiting kids right here in our
community. Sincere thanks to title sponsor
Mortenson Construction and Platinum
Sponsor Premera Blue Cross and to our
many generous sponsors, volunteers and
guests who helped make the 2012 Festival a
memorable—and very merry—celebration.
GRATEFUL
Enabling Bright Futures
Funds raised from the annual Festival of Trees event benefit the Children’s Services Fund and are used
primarily in support of the Providence Children’s Center. The Children’s Center provides comprehensive care
to more than 350 children a week who were born with various medical conditions or who face challenges
stemming from illness, injury or developmental challenges. Care is provided regardless of a family’s insurance
and income status, and the Center remains a primary ministry of Providence Regional Medical Center.
Funds from Festival of Trees also benefit the Center’s weeklong, summer day-camp—Camp Prov—designed
specifically for developmentally challenged children who receive services at the Children’s Center. Due to
their medical conditions, these kids are often not able to attend typical summer camps. More than 300
children are able to attend Camp Prov every summer in large part due to funding from Festival of Trees.

Anothony’s Homeport Restaurant donates use of
their restaurant, staff and gourmet cuisine year
after year for the The Epicurean Affair.
13
once again, in 2012, Anthony’s HomePort
Restaurant in Everett partnered with
Providence General Foundation to host
the exclusive Epicurean Affair. Anthony’s
generously donates their restaurant,
delicious cuisine, and talented staff to
create an evening of culinary delight. More
than 200 guests attend each year, including
area civic, business and medical leaders.
For 2012, event attendees enjoyed “An
Evening at the Beach,” with an oceanside
menu to fit the theme. Chairs Tom and
Kjersti Lane led the event to success, raising
more than $110,000 to benefit the David
J. Stewart, MD, Cardiovascular Education
Fund. Over the past two decades, supporters
of The Epicurean Affair have raised more
than $1,000,000 for the Providence General
Foundation and its funded programs.

Many thanks to Anthony’s for 26 years of
tremendous support. And thank you to the
many sponsors and guests who support this
important event for our community.
BUDD GOULD TRIBUTE AWARD
In 2011, the Providence General Foundation unveiled the Budd
Gould Tribute Award at The Epicurean Affair. This annual award was
designed to honor an individual or group who has made a significant
impact—through time, treasure or talent—in the community and at
Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. The inaugural award
was presented to its namesake, Budd Gould―the owner of
Anthony’s Restaurants, in recognition of his remarkable generosity to
Providence and to the community.
David J. Stewart, MD, 2012 Award Honoree
In 2012, the second-annual Budd Gould Tribute Award was presented to David J. Stewart, M.D. During his
40-year career as a cardiologist, Dr. Stewart was a champion of cardiovascular education and healthy heart
programs. He was honored with this special award at the time of his retirement as the medical director of
the Heart Institute and the Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Program at Providence. Dr. Stewart
served as a cardiologist with The Everett Clinic for 27 years. His dedication to preventing cardiovascular
disease led him to the American Heart Association, where he served on the State Board for 20 years and
for two terms as its president. Dr. Stewart’s life’s work will leave a legacy for those who follow in his field.

FRIENDS
Donor Suite opened in November and was
designed as a home-like place of respite for
Friends of Providence members in the event
a friend or loved one is hospitalized. The
Society is the Foundation’s way to express
sincere thanks to those donors who have
made an extraordinary investment in the
mission and work of Providence. Listed
here are the approximately 320 couples and
individuals who belong to the Friends of
Providence—together, their cumulative
support totals approximately $35 million.
