Lincoln Corners in Kuala Lumpur & Sarawak
Secretary Clinton‟s Townterview an Outstanding Success Via Ground Breaking CO.NX
Webchat at Lincoln Corners
Secretary Hillary Clinton at the Townterview in Kuala Lumpur November 2.
During the recent visit to Malaysia by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, about 500
students, faculty, NGO representatives, entrepreneurs and senior government officials packed the
Banquet Hall at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) in Kuala
Lumpur to engage in a conversation with her on themes ranging from women's empowerment,
education, and entrepreneurship to Afghanistan and the prospects for peace in the Middle East.
During the "townterview,” Secretary Clinton was
interviewed by two
well-known journalists working for
Malaysian TV conglomerate Media Prima. Questions
also came from the audience, both in person and
remotely from Lincoln Corners at the Kuala Lumpur
City Library and the State
Library in Kuching, Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo),
where groups had gathered to participate in the
conversation via CO.NX web chat.
KL Public Diplomacy Officer Anita Ghildyal managed
the webchat portion of the event, coordinating with PDO Anita Ghildyal and CO.NX Asia “guru” Neil Abraham

Neil Abraham, CO.NX Asia Pacific Coordinator and
webchat “guru” was in Malaysia to provide his
expert assistance on site for the Townterview,
liaising with ISTAC and local media partner (Media
Prima) to ensure that connections between sites
and final webcast feed successfully broadcast the
Townterview around the world via
CO.NX servers.

provided time and support in the days before and
throughout the webcast to make sure that testing went smoothly.
Liaison and testing started days in advance to resolve firewall issues at all three sites, and to provide an
online slideshow “preview” of the Townterview in Malaysia’s CO.NX webchat room.
Malaysian interlocutors for the Townterview webchat participating remotely from Lincoln Corners.
Lincoln Resource Center Director Gerard George liaised with Lincoln Corners in Kuala Lumpur and
Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) to gather an audience, and identify two very lucky Malaysian interlocutors in
KL and Sarawak, to ask questions during the webchat from these sites. Sherley Ngan and Siti Aminah Bt
Hassan asked the Secretary some very challenging questions. The webchat drew 80 guests at Lincoln
Corner KL and 60 guests at Lincoln Corner Sarawak.
The audience certainly loved listening to Secretary Clinton describe the challenges of her job and the
accomplishments of the Obama Administration over the past two years. Among the audience was a
student who won a contest on U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur's Facebook page, giving her a coveted spot at
the event and a chance to ask the Secretary a two-part question on the U.S. and ASEAN and on the
difficulty of women breaking through the glass ceiling in politics.
Despite numerous challenges both human and technical,
Embassy Kuala Lumpur broke new ground on November
2, enabling people across Malaysia to participate
“virtually” in an historic, first-time ever, high level public
diplomacy CO.NX webchat with the Secretary of State
from Malaysia.
