Summer 2006
TA H O E YA C H T C L U B summer 2006 Tahoe Yacht Club Laser Racing Kicks In To Gear founded Exerpt from an article written by Buff Wendt for the Sierra Sun after Week One: Race 1 started with Matt Clark (below right) accidentally capsizing on the start line, much to the amusement of his competitors. While Clark was checking out the clarity of Lake Tahoe. his competitors were busy putting as much distance on him as possible. Dan Hauserman (above right) took an early and dominant lead, with David Adolphs, Buff Wendt, and Stan Eriksson chasing him. At the second mark Eriksson had sailed into second with Adolphs in third. David lost his main sheet capsizing partially onto Buff, who managed to escape cleanly and capture second with Stan in third. “ I tried hard to catch up, but no one gave me an inch. The level of competition in this fleet allows for no mistakes.” said Clark finishing an uncharacteristic 8th. For Race 2, Adolphs won the start with Clark and Hauserman close behind. Newcomer to the fleet and collegiate sailor Caroline McNally made an impressive showing in one of her first times sailing in a Laser. She rounded the first mark in third, but lost her main sheet, causing her to fall behind. However, her speed showed she will be giving everyone a run for their money in the weeks to come. Showing his talent on the second leg of this race was Todd Jackson, who pushed the envelope in downwind speed coming close to capsizing several times. Returning to Tahoe from the East Coast, Dave Mesicek also pushed the top three in this race and reminded his competitors that he is a serious threat. The final race of the night had a good start with the fleet in a tight pack. Rob Lober and Jackson mixed it up on the first leg, only to have a strong puff come in from the left side of the course and send a pack around in front. “The talent of this fleet never ceases to amaze me” said Rear Commodore Stacy Conner, who serves as race committee, but has personally logged plenty of time in a Laser herself. “More than half of the people here compete at a National or World level either in the Laser or other boats.” Justin Casey, competitor and Fleet coordinator, handed out 1925 700 North Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, Calif. "With no wind as we left the harbor, a nice westerly filled in pro‑ viding steady and surprisingly warm breezes across Lake Forest as nine boats started in the first of two seven-week series." Photos by Staff Commodore Steve Lapkin awards at Jake’s, the sponsor of the first night. And that’s how it began this year. We now have six races behind us with more and more competitors showing up each week. “By midseason we'll be seeing 25 boats between the A and B fleets,” said Justin. “The B fleet is for beginning sailors with their own nightly awards. We’re a social and friendly group of people, willing to teach others our love for the sport.” The Tahoe Laser fleet races every Monday night off of the Lake Forest Boat Ramp with starts at 6 p.m. sharp. Afterwards, everyone dines and socializes at the sponsoring restaurant of the night—Jake’s, Garwoods, or Sunnyside. If you are interested in joining, contact Justin Casey at [email protected] or come down to the boat ramp (next to the U.S. Coast Guard station) at 5 p.m. on a Monday night. Racing will occur every Monday night through the end of August. The sesason finale—the Kip Lar Rieu Laser Fleet Championship at Stampede Reservoir, September 9—includes camping at the reservoir and is an event not to be missed. Also, there is usually room on the Molly for folks that are interested in serving on Race Committee. A final note on the sailing side of things: this year we are very pleased to be hosting the Melges Pacific Coast Championships on the weekend of July 14-16. We hosted this event two years ago and showed them such a great time that they are coming back for more. On the power side, new life is being breathed into our Over-TheBottom events again this year under the able stewardship of Roger McGee and Tom O’Rourke. If you haven’t participated in our O-T-Bs (as we call them) you're missing a good deal of TYC fun. These powerboat rallies involve a bit of skill and a good deal of luck and always end up with an awards ceremony/party with its own O-T-B daily drink special. The dates are in the calendar and if you are interested in participating, contact either Roger or Tom and they can fill you in on the details. Changing of the Guard Since this is my last official “Comments from the Commodore” before our Annual Meeting and election of Flag Officers and Directors for the coming year on September 2, I would like to let our membership know how much I have personally enjoyed serving as your Commodore. It has truly been a privilege for Cynthia and me to meet so many wonderful people and gain an even better understanding of the value of membership in Tahoe Yacht Club. I know Vice Commodore Philip Ballantyne is primed and ready to take over command and I will be looking forward to enjoying his stewardship of our Club. Once again, I think that about does it from the Commodore’s side of the house and Cynthia and I will look forward to seeing you around the Club. Ballantyne Wooden Boats. Philip is also author of featured articles in Classic Boating and a book, Classic American Runabouts, Wood Boats 1915-1965, published in 2001. A TYC member since 1991 and Director since 2001, he has served as chair of the House Committee, Nominating, and Wooden Boat Week 2001-2005, and currently chairs the Long-range Planning Committee. Bruce Block, a Bay Area financial consultant, attended Cal Poly and San Jose State where he graduated with a B.S. in Business and an MBA in Marketing. The Blocks reside in Tiburon and Tahoma at Lake Tahoe where Bruce enjoys sailing and power boating with his wife, Donna, and Golden Retriever, Winchester, in their 1937 Chris-Craft, Tomahawk. Bruce, past Executive Director of the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association, has been a member of TYC since 1987 and active Concours volunteer and Hospitality Committee member. Stacy Conner is a real estate agent with Conner Properties and a very busy mom of two very active sons, Ryan, 9, and 4-yearold Blake. The former University of San Diego co-ed has been a Lake Tahoe "local" for more than a dozen and a half years since moving here with her late husband, Eric. Stacy is an avid skier and sailor, skippering her Melges 24, TTNF, and the Chris-Craft Constellation, MOLLY, as well as joining the Laser fleet on Monday nights. A TYC member since 1992 and Director since 2004, she is a member of the Sail Committee and chairs the House Committee. Paul Cunha, a commercial general contractor, is Vice President of Business Development for S.D. Deacon Corp. of California. He and Carol, along with their two children, Catherine, 16, and Robby, 13, make their home in Granite Bay and at Tahoe's Agate Bay. A graduate of Cal State University (business, real estate and land use), Paul has chaired the Architectural Committee for the Club as well as Membership, served on the Wooden Boat Week Committee, and helped in organizing the Club's and Woodie Over-The-Bottom rallys. He has been a TYC member since 1987 and Director since 1998. Ray Holstead and his wife, Kathy, split their time between homes in San Francisco and Tahoma. A California native, Ray is a graduate of San Jose State University (BSEE) and Santa Clara University (MSE). The retired electrical engineer (PG&E, City of Oakland, UCSF) has been a member of TYC since 1991 and has volunteered this past year as a Club delegate to PICYA. Watch for him, too, in this summer's Over-The-Bottoms, as he and OUR GAL II attempt to better last year's 4th place finish. Jenny Ludwig lists her occupation as "volunteer" and that she's been for some 30 years —from PTA mom and Junior League to ACBS and since 2002, a member of TYC's Board of Directors and current Membership Committee chair. A fourth generation Californian, Jenny met her husband, Concours Chief Judge Barry, while both were students at the University of Oregon. The now "empty-nester" parents of Hilary and Matthew make their home in San Jose and at the Lake at Rubicon Bay. Jack McKenna and his wife, Cindy have been members of TYC since 1989, beginning as skipper and crew of their Catalina sloop, CYNTHIA MARIE, with Jack taking the helm of the Club's Sailing program from 1998 through 2002. With election to the Board, he became Treasurer (2000-2005) and has also served as a Concours judge for the past six years. The now-retired Professor of Management and Director of Graduate Programs at Chico State University, Cindy, and Delaney, the dog, make their home in Paradise, Calif., and at Homewood where Jack is an active member and current president of the Homeowners' Association. John McKinney, elected TYC Director and Treasurer in 2005, has spent virtually his entire career as a financial consultant and in management for non-for-profit organizations. Most recently he was CFO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Chief Operating Officer for the Academy's Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company for 14 years before retiring in 2003. Members of TYC for nearly 15 years, John and his wife, Sue Campbell (organizer of the North Tahoe Rowing Regatta) reside in Healdsburg, Calif., and Tahoe City. Larry Tomlinson went from the Navy to college (BS, Rutgers; MBA, University of Santa Clara) to a globetrotting 38-year career with Hewlett-Packard in Brazil, Switzerland, and on both coasts of the U.S. before retiring in 2003 as Senior Vice President and Treasurer. But totally retired he isn't, as he continues as a board member of three public corporations. Larry and his wife, Gail, are both avid skiers, downhill and crosscountry, and coordinated this year's Penguin trip to Park City, Utah. The couple, who have been members of TYC since 1997, now make the home full-time in Squaw Valley. Hank Upton and his wife, Joan, took over the reigns as Hospitality chairs this year after first volunteering for a Club Halloween party a few years back (displaying Hank's hidden talents as a cartoonist). The Stanford alum, semi-retired physician and TYC Director since 2004 also stays busy keeping three boats afloat, including a 1941 Chris-Craft barrel back, and traveling with Joan, this year, from the Galápagos to China. The Uptons, TYCers since 1997, reside in Woodside, Calif., and McKinney Shores at the Lake. Andy Wagner is a Director (since 2005) of many talents—from chairing the Club's Power Boat committee to putting together a half dozen or more winetastings, Winemaker's Dinner and October's annual TYC bus tour of nearby wineries. On the serious side, the UC-Berkeley grad (Business Administration/Finance & Marketing) is a merchant banker with Venture Capital, Management Buyouts, Mergers & Acquisitions. Members since 2002, Andy, his wife, Suzanne Boucher, and Ruby, the Newfoundland, split their time between homes in Walnut Creek and Carnelian Bay. From Rear Commodore Stacy Conner, House Committee Chair around the House Hello again to all Tahoe Yacht Club members! The biggest news from the Clubhouse would be the change in our staff. Most notably, it was with regret that Karen Jakobs had to give us her resignation so soon after joining our TYC family. She received an incredible job offer from a company in her home town of Reno and could not resist what Darren Kramer the difference in comNew Clubhouse mute time would mean Manager to her and her family. So that left the House Committee and Kelli Twomey back at "square one" with the busy summer season upon us! We had to believe there had to be a silver lining in our situation and we have found it. Many of you will remember our Clubhouse Assistant from last year, Darren Kramer. He was a huge asset to the Club and enjoyed working with us as well. The House Committee contacted him, he went through the interview process, and I am happy to announce that Darren is our new Clubhouse Manager. After training under the tireless tutelage of Kelli Twomey, he assumed his full time responsibilities July 7. As you will see from the calendar there is hardly an empty spot. We offer an activity for every age and interest at the TYC. For those that prefer the wind in your sails we have races on Monday, Wednesday and many weekends. If you are interested in participating, check the web site and follow the links starting at “Under Sail” and sign up on the “Bulletin Board” if you'd like to crew. If you prefer the more mechanically-powered transportation, try your hand at the Over-The-Bottoms. Either way, come by the Club and use the five moorings available for our members (on a first come first serve basis). Identify yourself as a TYC member at the TC Marina dock and they will direct you to an open mooring. The Marina can be contacted by phone at (530) 583-1039 or on marine radio channel 78. Dock hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. thru August. Don't forget we also have many opportunities for the land lubbers amongst us please join us for our hiking and tennis socials. Preparing for Wooden Boat Week has our Kellis at a trot with many of the social events either filled or close to it! If you have any last minute plans for WBW, please contact Kelli Gintel a.s.a.p. at (530) 581-4700, ext. 103. A Tahoe summer at the Club just never disappoints and we hope to see you soon enjoying all we have to offer. Your family will thank you. helping yo u br idge the gap Dale O. Next time you’re headed out for a day on the lake or an afternoon cruise, stop by the Club for a visit. It’s your Club with the staff is ready to serve you and your guests! From Director Andy Wagner, Powerboat Chair Summer OTB Series kicks off July 22 The 2006 Over-the Bottom series begins on Saturday, July 22, with the first of the four season's Saturday morning rallies starting from the Tahoe City Marina. This year’s OTB events will cover both north and west shores with events starting with registration at 8:30 a.m. and finishing at off the Tahoe City Marina (July 22 and August 26), Garwood’s Grill & Pier (July 29) and Chamber’s Landing (August 19). OTBs are open to TYC members in all types of craft—wood, fiberglass or metal—and do not require excessive speed or equipment. It has been said that a successful performance in an OTB requires limited navigational abilities, some boat handling skills and a lot of luck! Under the leadership of co-chairs Roger McGee and Tom O’Rourke, 15 boats carried more than 60 TYC members, family and guests in one or more rallies last year. We expect an even larger crowd this summer! Participants receive instructions—direction, speed, time and/or distance—to navigate a preset course. Often these instructions will provide scenic viewpoints, historical notes and local trivia. There will be multiple check points along the way where each boat will pick up a playing card which will be used to form a poker hand at the finish of the course. In each event, the first boat will cross the start/finish line promptly at 9:00 a.m. with additional boats following at two minute intervals. Please arrive at 8:30 a.m. in order to register. A party, with appropriate libations, and awards follow each events. Overall 2006 OTB Series Winners will be determined after the final event, based on the best three of four finishes. The cost to participate is $75 for the series of four events or $25 per individual OTB. Watch for e-mail announcements or contact the Club prior to each event for last minute updates. 11 From Director Hank Upton, Hospitality Chair September events heatin' up Our Hospitality Committee has swung into high gear for September—one of the most enjoyable months at the Lake—so don't pack up on Labor Day. There's a Wine-tasting AND Brewmaster's Dinner already on the month's calendar PLUS two new Hospitality events below: Wednesday, Sept. 6 Cruise with UC Davis-Environmental Research Team If you've watched their boat and wonder just what they do, here's your chance—for the first 15 to sign up—to ride along with the UC Davis-Tahoe Environmental Research Center crew. It's a two-hour cruise, 9-11 a.m., just for TYC members. Call the Club, (530) 581-4700, to get your name at the top of the list. BUT if you're not one of the lucky ones to make the cut, there's another opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at Souper Saturday, December 2, with presentation by Heather Segale of the new UC. Davis-Tahoe Environmental Research Center. Saturday, Sept. 9 Toe-tappin' End-of-Summer Barbecue The lawn, beach and picnic area at McKinney Shores is reserved, a "hoe-down" caller and music booked, and some TYC "cooking masters" preparing the vittles for a fun End-of-Summer Barbecue with a western flavor! It promises to be a real "tap your toes and shake your leg event" so please save the date, watch for your invite in the mail and come on by to say "howdy"! 12 From Vice Commodore Philip Ballantyne, Chair, Five-Year Planning Committee 20 Slips in the new Tahoe City Marina We are delighted to inform you that we have come to a tentative agreement for the TYC leasehold on 20 slips in the new Phase I expansion of the Tahoe City Marina. These slips are scheduled to be available immediately upon completion of the marina expansion in 2009. If everything goes as planned, the Marina will begin accepting deposits to secure slip assignments this fall. In order to provide a fair and equitable distribution of these slips among all interested TYC members, the Board of Directors has approved a limited term lease on each of the slips and the use of a random lottery process for allocation. If you are interested in leasing a slip in the Tahoe City Marina through TYC, the leasehold and procedural details are set forth below. Leasehold Details Length: 25 to 50 feet in length, increasing in five-foot increments. Seasonal Cost: Although fees have not been set, estimates are in the range of $6,500 for a 25-ft. slip. Term: One-year lease with two options for one additional year. Lottery Process Timing: The lottery for available slips (if any) shall occur annually and will be held immediately after the Annual Meeting or another date as approved and announced at least 60 days prior to the drawing. The lottery will determine lessees for the following year. Lottery Process: A random lottery will be conducted by disinterested members of the Board of Directors. The lottery will consist of as many individual lotteries as there are sizes of slips available (i.e. 25', 30', 35', 40', 45' and 50'). The lottery will begin with the smallest available slip size and continue through the largest. Each member interested in a slip of the available size will be assigned a number and the numbers will be drawn at random until each of the available slips in that size is filled. In the event that a member is unsuccessful in obtaining a slip, that member may participate in the subsequent lottery for the next larger available size (if desired). Participation and Deposits: Each member desiring to participate in the lottery shall indicate the size(s) of desired slip and submit a deposit check in the amount of [50] percent of the annual lease payment for the largest of the desired slips. Requirements and Limitations: Each participant must be a TYC member in good standing at the time of the initial lottery and subsequent renewal(s). Each membership will be entitled to enter the lottery for one slip. Therefore, members with an existing slip under leasehold will not be allowed to enter the lottery for an additional slip(s). No subletting of slips is permitted. All vessels utilizing a TYC slip must be registered vessels of the club as indicated in the TYC Membership Directory. In the event that the member decides to sell the vessel occupying a TYC slip and does not wish to replace it, the slip will be made available to other members through the lottery process for the following year. We will notify the membership as details of the proposed lease and availability of slips becomes known. Further, notice of a lottery to be held on the occasion of the next annual meeting (September 2, 2006) will be given as soon as possible From Director Andy Wagner, Wine Events Chair I n our continuing effort to explore wines from all corners of the earth, we are pleased to take you to the other side of the world for a tasting of wines from the African continent. Please join us at the Clubhouse on Friday, Aug. 18, at 5 p.m. to welcome aboard Erik Ran, Vice President Sales and Marketing for Golden Kaan USA. Golden Kaan is a joint venture among Racke, the fifth generation, family-owned German wine and spirits giant, and KWV, the largest South African winery, controlling more than 30% of the total South African supply of grapes. Since its launch at VINEXPO 2003, a biennial weeklong wine extravaganza in Bordeaux, France, Golden Kaan has attracted new consumers to the South African wine segment in many international markets. Golden Kaan started in Europe and South Africa and became an overnight success exceeding 400,000 cases in annual sales and growing rapidly. The firm has become the market leader in every country where they started within the first three months. In their short three-year history, Golden Kaan wines have already been recognized with numerous awards from major International and U.S. wine competitions and publications, including three “Best Buys” (Golden Kaan 2004 South African Winetasting at the Club Friday, August 18, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, September 23 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2004 Merlot, and 2004 Pinotage) from the prestigious and influential Wine Spectator. Mr. Ran will educate TYC members on the variety, quality and value of wines available from South Africa while presenting six top quality South African wines for the members to sample: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the unique South African varietal, Pinotage. Please join us to learn more about these wines while visiing old friends and meeting new ones amidst spectacular views of the Lake. If you plan to attend, we ask that you contact the Club and bring an appetizer or other wine accompaniment to share with your fellow members. On Saturday, Sept. 23, our winetasting series at the Club returns to California with a featuring of Rhone varietals and old vine zinfandels from Michael~David Vineyards in the Central Valley town of Lodi. TYC is delighted to welcome David Phillips, owner, winegrape grower and sales/marketing head for Michael~David Vineyards. David will describe his family’s fifth generation wine business and their seven distinct brands of wine including the now famous 7 Deadly Zins, made from a blend of seven different Lodi based vineyards; the 7 Heavenly Chards, aged in barrels from seven different French coopers; and, the viognier formerly thought to be a roussanne dubbed Incognito. The Incognito line includes both a white viognier and a red (rouge) blend of multiple Rhone varietals. Winemaking in South Africa South Africa has been producing wines for more than 350 years, and today ranks as the seventh largest global wine producer. South African wines have grown ten fold in the last decade, having reached 1.1 million cases for 2005, and South Africa is the fastest growing wine country of origin in the U.S., up 48% over 2004. South Africa is a leader in innovation, such as developing cold fermentation, that advances the wine industry worldwide. The very first vineyard planted coincided with the arrival in southern Africa of settlers from Europe. In 1655, three years after his arrival in Table Bay, Commander Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East-India Company planted the first vines. In 1659 he wrote, “Today, praise the Lord, wine was pressed from Cape grapes for the first time.” Over the years, the diversity of the local culture has led to exceptional winemaking — a true collaboration between indigenous African and Cape Malay people, Dutch settlers, French Michael-David Vineyard Winetasting Huguenots, Germans, and other pioneers, There was a time when the thought of wine from the “Dark Continent” was a strange concept but now there are now vineyards all over the African continent. Algeria and Morocco have been producing wines for decades and modern wine-making has been set up in places like Zimbabwe and Kenya. However, it is down south in the Cape where climactic and topographic conditions simulate those of the old wine countries, that the continent’s finest wines are produced. This is the home of Golden Kaan wines. The Western Cape has an ideal climate, dually influenced by the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, similar to Northern France and the Napa Valley. From the tip of the African continent, where the two great oceans meet at Cape Agulhas, to deep in the desert-like Karoo and the Free State, nearly 60 officially declared appellations cover more than 100,000 hectares in South Africa’s wine regions. While white varietals still represent the majority of Cape vineyard plantings, the balance has improved from 15% red in 1990 to about one third today. Planning for Fall Events Plans are being made for a variety of fall wine events. We're contemplating more varietal and region specific winetastings along with the third annual Winetasting Tour, fall Winemaker’s Dinner, and other exciting ideas including the possibility of stepping beyond the wine world for a Scotch whiskey tasting. As always, we would appreciate your thoughts and any ideas for future events. If you would like to help organize a future wine event or have any suggestions, please contact Andy Wagner at (530) 581-3881, or e-mail ARW@ TradewindsCapital.com. 13 Trans Tahoe chairs Lynn and Jim Mullen (center) with Staff Commodores John Utter (left) and Jim Gregory (right) The Barracloughs—Emily and Jeff holding son Brady, with proud "Uncle Gerk," Greg Dick Wallrich, dressed for the surprise May 27th snow, with TYC Foundation President Dave Olson Diane and Don Sloat with Donna Wallrich "Best Dress" winner Jim Wiggins with Keith Mason and guest, and Frank Palermo May 27 Gin Fizz Fling on the social scene Craig and Virginia Questa Nancy Cunningham, Lynn Olson and Trinkie Watson sample grilled vegie hors d'heouvres by D'Lish. Planning the lake tahoe Concours d’Elegance and Wooden Boat Week, August 3 thru 10, has been the usual whirlwind of activity, a learning experience, and a lot of fun. The subtle changes to the "menu" this year have been greeted with a lot of enthusiasm. Our Opening Night party on Thursday, Aug. 3. was a quick sellout and is sure to be a memorable event. This new venue for Wooden Boat Week is another exciting change that has been receiving a good reaction. Moving the Woodie Over-the-Bottom back to Monday was a change we made to avoid the weekend crowding as much as possible. This popular event will be catered by “Men Wielding Fire” and is sure to be a delicious lunch – well-deserved after a morning of hard “work” on the lake!
