Annual Report - Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County
Creating Pathways of
Hope and Opportunity
ANNUAL
REPORT
2014 / 2015
Dear Friends,
In this Jubilee Year, we are called to be witnesses of mercy. The Year of Mercy is a special time dedicated to healing
through the incredible virtue that is the mercy of God. We encounter God in the study, reflection, and practice of mercy,
through acts of love, kindness, and unbounded generosity.
Mercy is the heart of Christ’s compassion for humanity and the soul of the work of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara
County. In His acts of love towards the poor and the marginalized, we have a profound example of how we, too, may
walk with God at a time when we have the chance to alleviate suffering and do the most good for those who have the
least opportunity.
Over the past three years, Catholic Charities has helped more than 160,000 of our neighbors living in poverty,
from infants and toddlers to seniors, from those struggling with mental illness, incarceration, and homelessness to
immigrants and refugees seeking safety and a new life. Eighty sites throughout Santa Clara County have offered more
than 40 programs to the local community, including early childhood and after-school education, nutrition programs,
older adult services, behavioral health services, housing, job training and placement, asset development, immigration
legal services, and refugee resettlement and foster care. We have also brought together community partners to advocate
for policy changes to develop innovative solutions to poverty.
As the Chairman of the Catholic Charities Board of Directors, I thank you for your generous support of Catholic
Charities. Your gifts are extraordinary acts of love and mercy that make possible these steps and strides out of poverty.
The Year of Mercy is only just beginning. I invite you to open your hearts to embrace God’s call to mercy and lend a
hand to our neighbors in need, so that together, we may pave pathways of hope and opportunity.
With every best wish and kind regard, I remain,
Sincerely yours,
Patrick J. McGrath
BISHOP OF SAN JOSE
Dear Friends of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County,
We are honored to present this annual report as we celebrate Catholic Charities’ legacy of 60 years of service in
Santa Clara County. This report shares not only the financial health of the agency, which is strong, but also shares
the power of our programs and the stories of the people we serve as we create pathways from poverty and despair
to hope and opportunity.
This past year, we served and advocated for 54,000 people in need in 40 different programs with nearly 500 staff
members and over 1,200 volunteers. We also created a new strategic road map that recognizes our commitment to
alleviate the conditions of chronic poverty, especially for seniors and people with disabilities; prevent the cycle of
generational poverty for children and youth; and reduce situational poverty for employable adults. We developed
priorities focused on strengthening our infrastructure, transforming our funding model, developing client-centered
services, incubating social innovation, and advocating for policies and best practices that address the barriers and
root causes of poverty. We also intensified our commitment to youth and young adults on probation by providing
them with mental health and support services. We are proud that our housing development arm, Charities
Housing, opened Parkside Studios, a new apartment building in Sunnyvale, as we continue to address the challenge
of affordable housing and homelessness. Our renewed Parish Partnerships initiative has strengthened the network
of parishes engaged with us in our Gospel-inspired mission of social service and social change with people of all
cultures and beliefs.
