Dear Virginia Chance School Family and Friends,
SHAZAM! It’s our SUPERHERO AUCTION, and I thank you for being here to support Virginia
Chance School! Supporting the students of Virginia Chance School—“This looks like a job for
Superman!” Thank you so much for being a hero to our school and especially to the children
of our school!
I hope you have a wonderful evening tonight—enjoying time with other parents, grandparents,
and friends. Then POW! BAM! AND KA-POW—I hope you win some unique items during the
silent auction and outbid others on those very special items during our live auction. I hope you
are so SUPER tonight and committed to your children and their school that your bids are frequent
and high, knowing that you are not just getting fantastic items, but more importantly, you are
helping your child and Virginia Chance School. That is being a HERO.
The Auction is the second major fundraiser of our year—that means we depend on the monies
raised tonight. Your attendance here and the items you purchase make it possible for our school to
turn dreams into realities and for your child to benefit in every area. In the words of Spiderman,
“With great power comes great responsibility.” Tonight we will also do something very important
and significant for the children of Virginia Chance School. We will have a special time during the
live auction when your bids will make it possible for children of all socio-economic levels to be
part of our school. The Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund means children whose families cannot
afford a Virginia Chance School education will get to learn and go to school just as your own
children do. It means your child gets a more diverse community of learners as we open our school
to other children and their families. Our goal is for the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund to enable
more children to get this extraordinary independent school education, and you will make a
difference by helping us reach this goal. YOU have the great power to give to benefit others.
Please join me in thanking Melanie Salsbury, our Auction Chair! She is a real SUPERHERO who
has been ZOOMING and CRACKING and putting in many, many months of work to produce
this auction. Thank you, Melanie, and the Auction Committee Chairs for doing MIGHTY WORK!
Melanie, our Auction Committees and many wonderful parent volunteers worked to make tonight
a reality. Brookes Pope, our Development Director, and I are most grateful for you and to you!
Each one of you can make this a real SUPER HERO Auction by being a real hero! Bid, get that
item, give to the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund, make a friend and build our Virginia Chance
community. Batman said, “It’s not who we are underneath, but what we DO that defines us.”
Tonight, you will do mighty, powerful, amazing, super things for Virginia Chance School. I know

you to an evening of giving generously and having fun on behalf of the children of Virginia Chance

MARY MAPLE FINANCIAL AID FUND
On the night of February 27th, it is our goal to elevate the Mary Maple Fund to heights it has not seen
before. To do this, we want you to know a bit about this VERY important resource for our school.
Who was Mary Maple?
Mary Maple was a Virginia Chance School parent with three children who started our school as
preschoolers and graduated from the program: Justin, Adam and Meredith. Mary was an involved
parent, like you, who drove on field trips, helped with class parties and helped her children with
homework. She volunteered to help in the office, sub in the classroom and go on the End-of-theYear Trip. Mary lost her battle with cancer in 1995 before her children had graduated. Mary, Mike
(her husband), Justin, Adam and Meredith loved Chance School. Because her whole family believed
in the mission of the school, the Maple family established the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund in
her memory. Mary’s memory and positive impact on the children and families of Virginia Chance
School continues today.
Why the need for the
Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund?
Part of Virginia Chance School’s mission is to attract and retain a diverse community of learners. The Mary Maple Fund underscores the school’s commitment to making Virginia Chance School
accessible to families, regardless of their ability to afford this extraordinary independent school
education. More families than ever need financial help to send their child to our school. In fact,
the amount of financial aid awarded has almost tripled over the last five years. Each year, this fund
provides need-based tuition assistance to approximately 17-22 percent of our students. Financial
aid is critical to maintaining socio-economic diversity in our school, and we must remain available
to families to stay true to the values we want to instill in our students. Some families make dramatic
sacrifices to send their children to Virginia Chance School, and even a modest amount of financial
aid can have a meaningful impact.
How can you help?
As is our tradition at our Auction, the night of February 27th, we want you to get to know and be a
part of the Mary Maple Financial Aid Fund. We want you to know who Mary Maple was; we want
you to hear the impact her life has on our school and students through that Fund; and then we want
you to give at whatever level you can to ensure its continued health and growth.

50/50 CASH RAFFLE
Buy a ticket for $10 and you could be the one to share the wealth on Auction night. The “pot” will
be split 50/50 between Virginia Chance School and one lucky winner. The more tickets sold, the
bigger the pot. Tickets will be sold until 8:00 p.m. on Auction night. The drawing will be held at
8:40 p.m., just prior to the Live Auction. Tickets may be purchased in advance and are available in
the school office and the Development office. Winner does not need to be present to win.

LIVE AUCTION RULES
1. The Live Auction will begin at approximately 8:45 p.m. and continue without interruption
until all items have been auctioned.
2. Please remain silent during the Live Auction so the people around you can hear the auctioneer.
3. To bid on an item, raise your bid card with the number plainly visible to the auctioneer.
4. Keep track of your purchases. This will help settle any disputes that may occur.
5. As you leave the Auction, get your personal invoice at Check-Out and pay for your purchases.
You may pay with cash, a check made payable to Virginia Chance School, Visa or MasterCard.
If your purchases total $500 or more, you may pay in four equal payments: one the night of
the Auction, and the other three on the 15th days of March, April and May. With your invoice,
proceed to the Live and Silent Auction areas to pick up your purchases. Please take all
purchases with you on Auction night. Arrangements may be made at Check-Out for delivery
of oversized items.
6. In the event of a disputed bid, the auctioneer will be the sole judge, and he retains the
option of restarting the bidding. His decision on any matter or procedure will stand, and
all sales are final.
7. Unless otherwise specified, all Auction items must be used within one year of the date of
the Auction. Dates and times must be arranged at the mutual convenience of the donor
and buyer.
8. Unless otherwise specified, all restaurant certificates exclude tax, gratuity and alcohol.
9. Values set forth for items being auctioned are estimates of fair market value and are not
warranted by Virginia Chance School for tax purposes. Donors and buyers should consult
their tax advisers as to the deductibility of any donation or purchase.
10. All trips must be arranged at least 30-60 days in advance. Please be aware that your desired
date might not be available unless you book early. Neither Virginia Chance nor the donor can
be held responsible for availability.

The 2 day Twos have explored the art of negative space. The class has individually painted

Our Fours have been working hard - at playing! This classroom loves to be outside,
where they are able to collect endless natural wonders to treasure. We bet the parents
of these friends find lots of pockets full of rocks, leaves, sticks and other natural
beauty. In this spirit Ms. Natalie and Ms. Margaret’s Fours have created a beautiful
piece of art. This creation is a shadow box filled with beautiful, hand-picked sticks
from Virginia Chance School grounds, painted together to create a one-of-a kind art

“Ish” Inspired Artwork + Book
This beautiful art piece has been inspired by the wonderful book Ish by Peter Reynolds.
In the story Ish, a little boy named Ramon loves to draw, but loses his confidence when
his pictures are laughed at. He crumples up his drawings and tosses them on the floor,
meanwhile his little sister has been gathering them up and displays them! This story
shows that art isn’t about being perfect, but about thinking more “ish”-ly! This book is a
favorite of this classroom, and its inspired artwork will be a favorite in your home! You
will get to keep this inspirational book as well!

Colorful Wall Art
Mrs. Popham & Mrs. McLachlan’s K/1 have created this one-of-a kind item especially
to brighten your home! This incredible statement piece includes a white frame and
background with beautiful, brightly colored teardrop-shaped pieces gathered in a oval
fashion “pointing” toward the center with the pieces varying in size. It’s an amazing
piece that these students have put their heart into making for you.

Kentucky String Art
This is a beautiful piece, full of heart, for your home! This gorgeous 16×20 stained
wood includes the state of Kentucky outlined with small nails with a small heart for our
beloved Louisville. The students have used string to wind around the nails to create the
outline of our state. It’s a statement piece in itself that will look perfect in your home.

Framed Collage of Favorite Places at Virginia Chance School
As the Intermediates experience their final years at our beloved school, they are finding
their favorite places at Virginia Chance School. Is it our historic Florida Heights
Station? The stairs and doors leading into the building? Or maybe Goose Creek or the
playground? Our friends have been inspired by these locations and have drawn them to
be placed in a beautiful framed collage. This one-of-a kind piece will be an incredible
addition to your home, reminding you of Virginia Chance School memories for years to

SILENT AUCTION RULES
1.
The Silent Auction opens at 6:00 p.m., and section closings by room begin promptly at
7:30 p.m., as posted in the Program section of the catalog.
2.
A minimum bid will be specified on the first line of each bid sheet. Increased dollar amounts
are listed for each subsequent bid, based on the value of the item. Dollar amounts increase
up to approximately double the stated value of the item.
3.
To bid on an item, write your bidder number CLEARLY next to the dollar amount that you
wish to bid. You may bid a higher dollar amount by selecting a dollar value farther down
the list, and drawing a line down to that amount, where you then write your bidder number.
(That will make it easy for other bidders to see where the current bid is and prevents a
dispute later.)
4.
When the Silent Auction closes, a member of the Auction Committee will circle the last
amount bid on each bid sheet. No bids written beyond that point will be counted.
5.
As you leave the Auction, get your personal invoice at Check-Out and pay for your purchases.
Your invoice will show any items where you were the highest bidder. You may pay with cash,
a check made payable to Virginia Chance School, Visa or MasterCard. If your purchases
