Bruce Coast Lighthouse Tour
Stretching from Point Clark in the south to Tobermory in the north, the Bruce Coast
Lighthouse Tour features 15 distinctive lighthouse and marine heritage sites for you
to explore along the shores of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. You can climb to the
top of the light tower, take a tour boat ride, spot the Phantom Piper, experience
world famous sunsets, paint or photograph, learn the history of marine navigation,
and see shipwrecks.
Suggested route: Begin your tour at the Point Clark Lighthouse and meander to
Tobermory along the Lake Huron shoreline (2-3 days). After touring the Tobermory
sites head back down the Peninsula along the Georgian Bay side and end your tour
with the Cape Croker Lighthouse (2-3 days).
Happy Birthday!
Here’s what you do (please read carefully):
This year marks the start of some very special birthday celebrations here on the
Bruce. John Brown’s famous Imperial Towers begin turning 150 years old starting
in 2008. The Cove Island Light Station followed by Point Clark, then Chantry
Island all reach this significant milestone in the next few years and you bet there
will be a party.
NEWS:
Canada Post Uses Point Clark in New Stamp Series
• The tour is self-guided, however some sites do provide interpretation
and guide service seasonally.
• The distance from Point Clark to Tobermory is approximately 210 km.
• Watch the weather. Sites which are only accessible by boat are highly
dependent on good weather.
• Admission fees vary for each location. National Park fees apply for
Flowerpot Island. For island locations tour boat fees apply.
• Wear appropriate footwear. Some offer hiking trails.
• Use this guide to book accommodation and plan your entire trip.
The Point Clark Lighthouse has been featured as one of six stamps in a set of
lighthouses that reflect Canada’s rich marine history. Purchase the set at any
Canada Post outlet.

Point Clark Lighthouse - History
Kincardine Lighthouse - History
The Point Clark beacon began flashing its warning on April 1st, 1859. It turns
150 years old in 2009. This Imperial Tower plus five others along Lake Huron
and Georgian Bay were built by Scotish-born stonemason John Brown. Constructed
of limestone from nearby Inverhuron, the
Point Clark Lighthouse stands 26.5
metres (87 feet) high. In 1967 it was
the first lighthouse in Ontario to be protected through designation as a National
Historic Site. Today, it still warns sailors
about the rocky shoals that extend 3.2
km into the lake.
Built into the Kincardine harbour hillside in 1874 to service a busy fishing and
local salt shipping industry, this octagonal wooden tower is the only lighthouse
located ‘downtown’. Sitting aloft of the two-storey keeper’s house, the
Kincardine Lighthouse is 24.4 meters (74
feet) tall. Sailors, recreational boaters
and commercial fishers can see the now
electrified working light from 30 km. The
Kincardine Yacht Club now hosts a marine
museum inside.

Chantry Island Lighthouse - History
Range Lights - History
Over 50 known shipwrecks surround Chantry Island and its Imperial tower, a testament to the rocky shoals and deadly storms that make this area one of the
most treacherous in the Great Lakes. Chantry Island was first lit on April 1st,
1859 and celebrates its 150th birthday
next year. Home to over 10,000 pairs
of mating birds, Chantry Island is a
Federal Wildlife migratory bird sanctuary. The local Marine Heritage Society
offers lighthouse tours. Be sure to check
out the range lights that guide boats
into the mouth of the Saugeen River.
Marine navigation was an integral part of daily life in the historic coastal town
of Southampton. The Imperial Tower on Chantry Island warned ships of the surrounding dangers, two smaller unmanned range lights guided mariners safely
into the channel of the Saugeen River.
Front Range Light – Originally built
in 1903, located on the north pier, this
wooden structure is now electrically powered and houses the foghorn used by
present day boaters.
Saugeen River Light – Sitting 18
metres (61 feet) above the water this
automated green light is located beyond
the Saugeen River Bridge.

Knife Is. Lighthouse & Lyal Is. Range Light - History
Big Tub Lighthouse - History
Rocky shoals and islands in the Stokes Bay area made marine navigation very
difficult. In 1885 a 17.3 metre (50 foot) wooden range light was erected on
the west shore of Lyal Island. Eventually automated in 1959 and replaced by
the present day steel navigational
tower. Additional navigational aids were
required in these waters and a lighthouse was built on nearby Knife Island.
The Knife Island lighthouse still stands
but a steel tower light is in use today.
Access to these sites is best suited to
the experienced canoeist or kayaker.
The relatively shallow water of Stokes
Bay can provide for a great daytrip.
Originally constructed in 1885 for a cost of $675, the Big Tub Lighthouse
played an important role guiding ships into the harbour from the sometimes
treacherous waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. The original structure was
later replaced by the six-sided, 14 metre
(43 foot) wooden lighthouse that is
seen today. An automated red light acts
as the guide for boaters. Watch for scuba
divers just off the point, as this location
is a very popular diving destination. One
of the more accessible lighthouse sites, it
is located virtually at the mainland terminus of Highway 6.

Cove Island Lighthouse - History
Flowerpot Island Lightstation - History
One of the most dramatic structures on the Bruce Coast, the Cove Island
Lighthouse has been marking passage between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay
since 1858 and celebrates its 150th birthday this year. This Imperial Tower structure built by John Brown is similar in
style to those at Point Clark, Chantry
Island and Griffith Island. The tower,
original house and fog plant, a workshop, and keeper’s homes make up the
light station today. The lighthouse can
only be viewed by private boat, the ChiCheemaun car ferry or by tour boat out
of Tobermory. Access on to the island is
restricted.
Flowerpot Island Lightstation has been guiding ships through this busy shipping
channel for over a century. The lighthouse was built on Castle Bluff in1897.
Four years later a keeper’s home was built down on the shore. In 1969 the
lighthouse was replaced with an automated steel tower. The Friends of Fathom
Five National Marine Park, concerned
about preserving the marine history of
the island, have restored the remaining
buildings.

Cabot Head Lighthouse - History
Lion’s Head Lighthouse - History
Perched 24 metres (80 feet) above Georgian Bay, the Cabot Head Lighthouse has
guided ships for over 100 years. Named in honour of famous explorer John Cabot,
this site offers spectacular views of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay. In
1968 the original tower was demolished
and replaced with an automated light.
Fifteen years later the Friends of Cabot
Head completely restored the lightstation
and visitors are encouraged to visit the
lighthouse museum and walk the interpretive trails.
Set beneath the majestic Niagara Escarpment, this little lighthouse has endured
more hardship than the mariners it guided. The first light was established in
1903 and was rebuilt several times due to the harsh conditions of Georgian
Bay. Automation in 1969 finally replaced
the attractive structure with a metal post
and light until a group of high school
students built a replica model that stands
in its place today. The light once again
guides boats safely back into this
beautiful port.

Griffith Island Lighthouse - History
The first lighthouse at Cape Croker was built in 1898 to protect ships from a
nearby shoal. The original structure was replaced by the existing tower, made
entirely of concrete. It was the first lightstation in Canada to have its fog plant
and light powered by electricity. It is also
one of only three lighthouses on Georgian
Bay that still have their original Fresnel
lenses. Please respect local culture when
visiting this site. Cape Croker is home to
the Chippewas of Nawash. The lighthouse
is not available for tours but can be photographed.
The Griffith Island Lighthouse, one of John Brown’s Imperial Towers, was built
on the east shore of the island in 1859 and will celebrate 150 years of protecting sailors in 2009. The keeper’s house is near collapse while the lighthouse
structure remains intact. The island is privately owned and the lightstation is
maintained by the Coast Guard. It is only
visible by private boat from the water.
Access is not permitted.
