New contacts are important in our genealogical research and might help us find a way around our brick walls. In our Spring 1985 issue we wrote that the McCain Graduate Library at the Univ. of Southern Mississippi had the late Richard Lackey's personal genealogy library and most of it was not available to the public. Tyus MA~DUKE NORFLEET JEFFREYS by Louise Jeffreys Andrew. Order from the author, 18 Violet Ln., Somers Point, NJ 1983. Spiral bound. 08244. $11.00. 184 pp. Indexed. Mrs. Andrew has followed direct descendancy through Simon Jeffreys of Virginia and North Carolina, to Osborne, Simon II, and Marmaduke Norfleet Jeffreys. Marmaduke married Hannah Hill anc3 in the 1820's moved to Eastern Tennessee, and before 1850 moved on to Monroe County, Kentuc;ky. Hannah's parents are not known, but some Hill information is presented. Each of their children is featured in a separate section of the book which makes it easy to trace each person's lineage. The author's research includes county court records, wills, probate papers, land records, Federal census records and family Bible records. Combined with these records, on~ finds history, politics, and family narratives neatly woven into a very informative volume on Marmaduke Jeffreys' family. CEMETERIES OF YADKIN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA compiled by Carl C. Hoots. 1985. Soft back. pp. Indexed. Order from The Reprint Company, Publishers, P.O. Box 5401, Spartanburg, SC 29304. $25.00. 459 ThLs volume preserves a written record of the graves that still exist unmolested in Yadkin County in northwestern North Carolina. Yadkin County was formed in 1850 from the part of Surry County south of the Yadkin River; it is bounded by Surry, Forsyth, Davie, Iredell and WiLkes Counties. The book is divided into four sections: Church Cemeteries totaling almost 15.,500 graves, Private Cemeteries with approximately 1,500 graves, Iredell County Cemeteries giving about 1,000 graves and Davie County listing about 675 graves. In the absence of a cEOm.etery name, private cemeteries are named according to the surname which occurs most often. Location of each cemetery is given and former names of any cemeteries are noted. In each cemetery surnames are printed alphabetically in capital letters followed by the Christian name, and, when known, relationships are given in parenthesis. Age at death or birth and death dates are recorded with notations of: not legible, no date, veteran and which war, and whether a member of a special order. In a great many cases the only proof of a person's existence is found on a gravestone, and these records of inscription are .helpful to researchers who cannot roam the area looking for these essential records. RECORDS OF LOUISIANA CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS and Louisiana Confederate Commands, Volumes I & II, Volume III, Book 1 and Volume III, Book 2 compiled by Andrew B. Booth; Commissioner Louisiana Military Records. 1920 reprinted 1984. Hard back. 3,507 pp. Order from The Reprint Company, Publishers, P.O. Box 5401, Spartanburg, SC 29304. Three volume set $187.50. The state of Louisiana was the first state to succeed in getting to Confederate records for historical purposes. The states both north and south were refused access to them for fortyfive years. It is reasonably certain that no complete record of individual members of any Louisiana CSA command exists. A large number of soldiers were not included on Surrender and Parole rolls because they were absent at that time. Confederate records, including muster rolls of the Trans-Mississippi Department, were burned at Shreveport in 1865. Therefore, the multitude of information in this set will be of great interest to many descendants of Louisiana Confederate soldiers. Volumes I and II, bound into one tome, contain an Alphabetical List and Local Designations of Louisiana Organizations in the Confederate Army, comprising Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry and Militia. It is a grouping of 982 military companies, of which at least 400 of these were militia serving as home guards. The second alphabetical listing presents an Index to Battles, Campaigns, Engagements, Etc., Fought Within the Limits of the State of Louisiana, 1861-1865 and records date or dates of each engagement. The main body of information is contained in the section entitled Alphabetical Roll of Stich Official Records of the Individual Confederate Soldier, as are to be found in United States Records, and State Official Rolls. There are 779 pages of surname§) A through Georges with known data: unit designation, rank, locations at time of appearance on type and dated rolls, whether present, absent, furloughed, wounded, sick, type of illness, prisoner, paroled, and Oath of Allegiance. Occassionally birth place, occupation, residence, age when enlisted, marital status, and physical description is given. This volume has 1,000 pages. Volume III, Book 1 continues the official records of soldiers Georges through O'Brien and Volume III, Book 2 concludes with O'Brien to Zylks. The middle volume has 1,312 pages and the third volume has 1,195 pages. The print is small, but very clear, which means there is an incredible amount of information in this three volume set. Summer 1985 53 Book Reviews (continued) THE SPEARS SAGA by Joseph F. Spears. 1982. 8719 Stockton, Parkway, VA 22308. $17.00. Soft back. 248 pp. Order from the author, The Spears Saga is a history of Spears in general and of Kentucky Spears in particular. This family goes back to the time of Harold of Hastings of England and the Spears name appears in the British Colony as early as 1700. Written almost in newspaper style with many short chapters, each followed by a reference paragraph, the book contains biographical sketches of supposed brothers, Michael Christopher Spears and George Frederick Spears, who were born in 1728 and 1731 in Westphalia and eventually settled in Virginia. Their connections with the Froman, Bowman, McDowell and Chrisman families are discussed, and the book closes with biographies and pictures of the author's immediate family. WILKES RECORDS 1216-1984 by Lillian Jones Crews. 1984. Soft back. 280 pp. from Ms. Crews, 2QOl Shady Oak Dr., Tallahassee, FL 32303. $30.00. Indexed. Order The result of years of research has gone into this English and American history of the Wilkes families. Included are lineage charts and information on early English Wilkes families. Early Colonial Wilkes are noted, but in section two emphasis is on four known brothers, John, Joseph, Minor and Benjamin Wilkes. They are found in records of the 1780's in Charlotte County, Virginia, and their descendants are recorded in this volume. Included in the allied appendix is a record of the Snead family which descends from Alfred the Great of England. Some other allied families are given special attention, and material is found on these families: Banks, Bettis/Bettes/Betts, Cardwell, Crabtree, Crews, Edwards, Fakes, Farley, Gipson, Jones, Lambeth, Quesenbury, Stanfield, Stone, Summerhi1l,- and Winn/Wynne. Many abstracts of wills, deeds, and other noted references, plus narrative descriptions of many of the Wilkes individuals, make this a very informative recording. UNITED STATES CENSUS, VAN BUREN COUNTY, TENNESSEE 1910 transcribed by Margaret Rhinehart. 1984. Soft back. 114 pp. Indexed. Order from the Van Buren County Historical Society, P,O. Box 126, Spencer, TN 38559. Members $8.00; non-members $10.00; plus $1.00 postage. Seven districts and the town of Spencer comprise this transcription. It lists all household members, their ages, number of years married, number of children both living and dead, place of birth of individual and of his parents, horne ownership, and occupation. CSA veterans are also indicated. The researcher's speed and efficiency are enhanced by capitalized surnames and generous spacing along with a reliable surname index. Van Buren County in middle Tennessee is bordered by White, Bledsoe, Warren and Sequatchie Counties. Portions of Grundy and Cumberland are in close proximity. John and Elizabeth Wills Cowper's children were William, Wills, John, Robert and Grizzie. Also noted are the many other Cowpers who appeared in Virginia land records, quit rent rolls, marriages, etc. Part II concerns John's grandson, William II, who is a son of William Sr. He and his wife Rebecca Meredith, settled in Hertford County, North Carolina. Documentation is given for this brief section just as Part I is documented. EARLY PIONEERS ON THE Soft back. 186 pp. THR~E FORKS OF THE KENTUCKY RIVER by Miles Nicholas Crawford. 1984. Order from Mr. Crawford, 3486 Norman Dr., Charleston, WV 25306. $20.00. The author believes this book to be the only comprehensive record published to date on these early settlers along a portion of the Kentucky River. Samuel Crawford moved to Clark County, Kentucky cl784. Cornelius Bowman ~as a resident of Madison County, Kentucky in 1795. There are many stories about E1-Hannon Crawford, who was part Cherokee Indian, and many legends about others in the area. They were the Gabbards, Lawsons, Littles, Millers, Palmers, Jetts, Copes, Evans and many other pioneers and the families that married into these early families, This book represents more than thirty years of research by the author, and it contains Bible, military and cemetery records, documents, estate settlements, pictures, and old letters. "Ansearchin'" News 54 Boo~ Reviews (continued) DEEID ABSTRACTS OF WARREN COUNTY, KENTUCKY 1797-1812 compiled by Joyce Martin Murray. 1985. Harcj back. 147 pp. Indexed. Order from Mrs. Murray, 2921 Daniels, Dallas, TX 75205. $20.00. MrE3. }1urray learned to abstract deeds at an early age by working with her parents and grandfa~her. These abstracts are from microfilm of Deed Books AI, B2, C3, D4, and E5. Much of thE: area involved is in present-day adjacent counties of Logan, Simpson, Barren and Allen. ThE: bulk of the information concerns deeds, but bills of sale, deeds of gift, mortages, and po~ers of attorney appear and are therefore included. Each entry is listed by page number within each Deed Book. The date is given, followed in boldface type by names of each party in the instrument, identification of land and waterways, acreage involved and value of property_ The identities of grantees, grantors, witnesses, slaves and neighbors is given, and many re::1ationships are stated. Other counties of residence are often identified, and notations by thE2 compiler show when a party did not sign the instrument. These early records of Warren COLJuty may be essential to researchers of that area of Kentucky since records from two later fo~med counties of that same area, Simpson and Allen, were burned. COMI?UTER GENEALOGY by Paul A. Andereck and Richard A. Pence. 1985. Soft back. 280 pp. InOrder from Ancestry Incorporated, P.O. Box 476, Salt Lake City, UT 84110. $12.95. dexe=d. one finds a guide to research through high technology. It is written for family researchers who are interested in how computers may be both affordable and useful for genealogical research and family records management, and it is also intended for nongenealogists. Those who ha~e already bought personal computers may discover how they can put the power of their computers to better use. It clarifies what computers do, how they do it, and in what ways other researchers use their computers. A few of the chapters are titled What Computer Hardware and Software Do for You, Picking Genealogy Software, and Variations in Genealogy Software. Instructions ·for achieving particuler items and illustrations of different types are found for fannily record index, coding of footnotes, birth date, marriage date, death date, ancestral ch8Lrts, descendants charts, and individual reports. Genealogists should find this an economica~, quick and authoritative lesson in genealogical computing. He~e GUIDE TO RESEARCH by Johni Cerny and Arlene Eakle. 1985. Soft back. 364 pp. Indexed. Orde.r from Ancestry Incorporated, P.O. Box 476, Salt Lake City, UT 84110. $10.95. The authors have written this book as a companion book to their premier publication, The Source: A Guideline of American Genealogy. This volume is intended to fulfill the need for a definitive how-to-begin-and-proceed book on genealogical research. Using the case study approach, Ancestry's guide takes the genealogist step-by-step through the research process, using actual cases from the authors' files, including family group sheets, family charts, maps, and other forms to demonstrate sound research techniques. Many routes are suggested to accumulate the necessary data. The authors are based in Salt Lake City and describe unusual resources that characterize the Genealogical Library of the LDS Church, as well as newly printed materials from other sources. An emphasis on southern research is evident because the authors note that more researchers are stuck on southern problems. Although written with the novice in mind, there is much the more seasoned genealogist can learn from this volume. AMERICAN FAMILY HISTORY, A Historical Bibliography compiled by ABC-Clio Information Services. Indexed. Order from Clio Press Ltd., P.O. Box 4397, Santa Barbara, 1984. Hard back. 282 pp. CA 93103. $30.00. The ABC-Clio Research Guides reflect a new concept of history data base. Article abstracts and citations in this publication are divided into four chapters: (1) The Family in Historical Perspective, (2) The Family and Other Social Institutions, (3) Familial Roles and Relationships, (4) Individual Family Histories. The first ·three chapters are not genealogical in nature. Instead, numerous sociological publications are discussed, such as, Immigrant Women; The Family and Work (1850-1950); The Family in the City; in all 797 listings. Chapter four consists of 368 family listings, a brief review with comments but not reflecting a complete pull-do1Yn of each listing. To mention a few - Lincoln, Wagner, Gay-Borden, Campbell-Johnstons, Cole, Adams, Wilson, Brennans/Brannans, Oliver, Miller, Emerson, Morris, Stockbridge, and Waugh. This publication is a comprehensive index, definitely for the dedicated reader interested in history, economics and the social sciences. However, fortunate is the researcher who finds his/her lineage listed in Chapter Four and can obtain the book in which it is noted. Summer 1985 55 Book Reviews (continued) WHEELER COUSINS compiled by Wheeler Cousins. 1984. Soft back. Over 500 pp. Indexed. Order from Wheeler Cousins, c/o Vivagene Wheeler Handley, 2011 E. Rosebrier, Springfield, MO 65804. $20.00. Includes a year's free subscription of Wheeler Cousins Quarterly Newsletter. The association of Wheeler Cousins has grown from the various Wheeler reunions held throughout the United States. The emphasis of this volume is on Thomas and Elizabeth Wneeler's family of eleven children and their many descendants. Thomas was born c1737 and died in 1828 in Bedford County, Virginia. Early records of Bedford, Buckingham, Cumberland, Hanover and Henrico Counties of Virginia, and every located Wheeler, and some of their descendants have been included in this book. These records have made it possible to determine family lines and to correctly place a greater number of persons in these family lines. Some of the material shows unsolved problems which may be solved later by persons interested in Wheeler Cousins. Such information is always welcomed. Are you a Wheeler descendant? If so, this book is for you. A COMBS FA}fILY by 'Mae Frazier. 1982. Loose leaf with Accopress binder. Order from the author, 504 Clinton Rd., Lexington, KY 40502. $26.30. 425 pp. Indexed. The actual sources contain approximately 900,000 names, but listed here are only the sources for locating such names: passenger and port lists, naturalization lists, declarations of intent, and other published compilations that indicate proof of overseas origin. This sixtytwo page supplement is arranged alphabetically by author. Full publication information is given in each of'the numbered reference entries, followed by a descriptive annotation. The annotations include dates, original location of the passenger or ship list, immigration register, church record, naturalization data, or archival source in the native country. The second half of the volume is a combined index to the basic volume and ,this sequel. Reference numbers in boldface type are for items in this supplement; those in regular type are found in the basic volume. SEQUATCHIE COUNTY Tennessee County History Series Volume 77 by Henry R. Camp. 144 pp. Inde~ed. Order from Memphis State University Press, Memphis, TN 1985. Hard back. 38152. $12.50. As a native, Mr. Camp gives a most descriptive account of the Cumberland Plateau in Sequatchie County which was created in 1857 from Hamilton County. The Cherokee Indians claimed these lands in the early 1700's. Vivid descriptions are given of their marriage customs, crafts, religion, and general living conditions. However, with the admission of Tennessee into the union, the Cherokees were eventually removed from this area to lands west of the Mississippi River. The first non-Indian child born (1806) in the Sequatchie Valley was Louise Anderson, daughter of John and Betsy McNair Anderson, and the first white boy born (1807) there was William S. Griffith, son of Amos and Polly Standifer Griffith. The reader is taken through the Civil War, the Reconstruction Period and treated to local legends, and leading personalities of the period. Additional information on HUNDRED HUNTER COUSINS, compiled by Harriet A. Chilton, reviewed in Vol. 32, No.1, page 3. Benjamin Hunter's dates are 1770 to 1845 and he lived in Appomattox/Campbell Co. VA. "Ansearchin I " News 56 Boolk Reviews (continued) THE BELL FAMILY IN DID1FRIESSHIRE by James steuart. Inde9xed. 1932, reprint 1984. Spiral bound. 99 pp. Order from Molly Bateman Reigard, 1321 Gum Tree Ln., Huffman, TX 77336. $17.00. Th:is, the second of two volumes entitled "Records of the Western Marches," was originally published in 1932 under the auspices of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiqu~rian Society. The author has stated in his preface that it is a collection of notes conta:ining facts that might "serve as a foundation for anyone desiring to construct a pedigree or a l:J.istory of a particular family." Toward this end his sources are meticulously given. The booklet contains sixty-five pages, an index of places, a map, ful( name index, and a glossary to aid in comprehending some bewildering Scotch terminology. Other surnames mentioned are Ca~lyle, Carruthers, Graham, Irving, Johnston, Maxwell, Murray, and Scott. SOU~H 192 CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH by George K. Schweitzer, Ph.D.,SC.D. pp. Order from Dr. Schweitzer, 7914 Gleason, C-1136, Knoxville, TN 1985. Soft back. 37919. $9.00. The volume is comprised of four chapters covering early history of the colony, types of records, record locations, research procedure, and listings of records held in each county. It is especially helpful to that South Carolina researcher who has only sporadic and limited opportunities to make a personal search. Areas and dates of existing county records are most he~pful as are dated abstracts from newspapers and many manuscript materials. For example, the author's detailed description of the South Carolina Library's Book Division directs the searcher through the division by assigning a number to each of twelve alcoves then describing location and content. CURRENT GENEALOGICAL PUBLICATIONS Volume 4 by Claudette Maerz. Indexed. Order from Ms. Maerz, P.O. Box 37010, Bloomington, MN 1984. Soft back. 55431. $10.00. 96 pp. This book is a catalogue of some of the currently available genealogical publications. A standard format is used throughout to describe in detail each of ninety books and periodicals. A full page is devoted to each one and offers such information as number of pages, binding, typeset, size, types of information included, date of first printing, date of availability, number of copies available, and ordering information. A descriptive section lists surnames, areas and years covered or touched upon therein. In addition to the catalogue's ninety pages there is a surname index and a county/state index. AN INDEX OF THE ISHAMS IN ENGLAND AND AMERICA Nine Hundred Years of History and Genealogy by Edward Paul Isham. 1984. Hard back. Glenview, IL 60025. $64.95. 732 pp. Indexea. Order from Mr. Isham, P.O. Box 2191, Ever so often a family book is printed that stands apart from the usual; so it is with this publication (16th to 20th Century). Lamport Hall in Northamptonshire, England has been the home of the Isham family since 1560.~, This family considered it almost ritual to carefully preserve copies of their wills, marriage settlements, account books and even private letters al~ now deposited on loan to the Record Office there. However, the American Ishams are not so we~l documented. Many theories regarding the origin of John Isham (1654-1713) of Barnstable, Massachusetts have been raised by this author as well as others, but there is still much to be proved. The index of minety-five pages lists allied lines in America and England, and some of the names found are: Ashfield, Baker, Baugh, Bolling, Cason, Saunders, Adams, Alexander, Ballard, Bradley, Burnett, Davies, Ellis, Fuller, Hull, Johnson, Stevens and manY,many more. WAKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA CENSUS AND TAX LISTS 1830 and 1840 compiled by Frances Holloway Wynne. 1985. Hard back. VA 22031. $26.50. 312 pp. Indexed. Order from Mrs. Wynne, 9151 Hermosa Dr., Fairfax, Censuses, and tax lists of ~ears prior to 1850 complement each other, particularly since only the head of a household was named in the census. Identification of unnamed individuals may become possible with the comparison of the census and tax list. The 1830 and 1840 censuses are indexed individually, and a third index is given for the 1830 and 1840 tax lists. The 1830 tax list shows township, name of taxpayer, acreage, value of property, number of white polls, number of slaves, and total tax. The 1840 tax list adds a column for free colored. An accompaning map reflects townships not only in Wake County, but also some of those in bordering counties. This is one type of reference book that proves necessary for researchers. 57 Summer 1985 MINUTES OF EGYPT BAPTIST CHURCH - Shelby County, Tennessee Copied from the original and contributed by Judy C. & Harry M. Syler, 712 South 22nd, Arkadelphia, AR 71923 Sidney KYLE was born September 8, 1852, departed this life August 16, 1881 at his residence seven miles east of Arkadelphia, Arkansas. There we preached his Funeral Sermon the next day, and there they buried him with his father, and numerous brothers and sisters who had passed on before him. His father and mother moved from near Jackson, Tennessee to this country when they were young people. My father ministered unto them and was intimate with his mother's relatives, the GLENs. Now more than forty years afterwards, the Providence of God has placed me where I have performed these sad duties to one of the third generation. G.B.B. In January of February 1794 he, being a soldier in Captain Gorden's Company, Territory South of the Ohio River, was sent from Nashville to Knoxville with intelligence for the government of the territory. While on his way through the Wilderness he was attacked by Indians and shot in the chest. His expenses include: a physician at Knoxville $140.00; Dr. Mark Brown Sappington $150.00; to Dr. McFerson $150.00; Dr. Hollice $200.00. He has a large family without adequate means of support as his health prevented him from acquiring lands and farming. At the time he was wounded he was in lhe actual service of his country. That transcription was made from photocopies of the original loose pages in the Archives and lists a total of 205 signatures. We have reprinted the same petition, partly because of the addition of 3 names and alternative interpretations of the old signatures. But our prime reason for reprinting is that the 1964 version includes 29 names that do not appear on the film for this document. Rather, the 29 names are attached (in identical order) to document #11-1-1806 on this film. These names (from *Robert S. Valliant through *Alexander Cown/Coon) were on a paper once filed with #6-1-1806 as Jackson County and are now laminated and filed with #11-1-1806 Smith County. Jackson was formed in 1801 from Smith. Our research has not been able to determine in which county these men lived. We would appreciate any clarification researchers may make. Summer 1985 89 HISTORY OF DICKSON COUNTY Dickson County Press, Dickson, Tennessee, 12 Aug 1886 Contributed by Robert McAlear, P.O. Box 23, Nice, CA 95464 This article was written by Thomas Carter Morris, who apparently submitted several articles for publication, this one being number four of a series. Unfortunately, issues of the Dickson County Press with those earlier articles have not survived. The material is from a letter sent to Mr. McAlear in 1976 by Mrs. James H. Clemmer of Dickson, TN, who is a granddaughter of T.C. Morris (1833-1920). He was an attorney, delegate to the 1870 Constitutional Convention, and Clerk of the Dickson County Court during the Civil War. He was the son of James Knight Morris (? -1860), and the grandson of the Rev. Holloway Morris (c1760-c1830). Mr. McAlear is also a descendant of the Rev. Holloway Morris. About September 1804, Montgomery Bell, a hatter by trade, who the writer has always understood was originally from Pennsylvania, perhaps Philadelphia, bought a 520 acre tract of land of Daniel Ross, on the "iron fork" of Barton's Creek, upon which was erected Cumberland Furnace, between the dates of 1804 and 1811. It may be that Bell came from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, where he followed his trade awhile, but his native place was as before stated. He was the pioneer iron man of the county. The old furnace, perhaps, stood a short distance above where it now is. At this furnace were cast by Bell the cannon balls used by Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans, and a part of the old molds in which they were cast was sent to Nashville a few years ago. The iron ore of this section of the country is simply inexhaustible, and the greatest drawback has been the want of transportation. It is a notable fact, however, that no man or company that has ever operated these works has ever failed. They are now making about twenty tons per day of superior iron to any they have ever made, and once a railroad along the valley of main Barton's Creek, and capacity of the furnace can be increased to any reasonable amount, and the hills all along the different prongs of the creek will willingly give up their millions of hidden wealth in iron, and the fertile fields will part with their abundance of grain and tobacco, and every stick of its valuable timber will be brought into demand. Bell afterwards sold this furnace to W. Vanlier, who operated it during his life, and added greatly to the lands attached thereto. Mr. Bell afterwards built a number of other iron works in the county, among them Jones Creek forge, where Willis Jackson now lives. Valley forge, on Jones Creek, on the farm of L.L. Leech; Bellview furnace, on the same creek nearby; Worley furnace, four or five miles south of Dickson, on Pine River, and others, none of which are now being operated except the first named. About the same time that Bell came to this county, a cousin of his - sister's children - another hatter by trade, Edward Leech, of Philadelphia, came here also. It may have been that they came together. Mr. Leech settled in Montgomery County and improved a place very handsomely, but on account of some defect in the title he lost it. He had some property in Philadelphia, on February 15th 1812, Mr. Bell sold him 1000 acres of land on Johnson's Creek, for his property in Pennsylvania, and it is said that Bell made a handsome little fortune out of that speculation. This 1000 acres of land embraced where E.N. Phipps, Jos. Grymes, John Matlock, M.G. Harris and Press Grymes live. Mr. Leech settled there about the time he bought it. He died there. He left three daughters. Sallie who married James Matlock and John Matlock; Mrs. H.A. Bibb and Mrs. E.N. Phipps are the only living children of Mrs. Sallie Matlock known to the writer. Lavey Leech, another daughter of the said Edward, married Nathan Tubb. They moved to Humphreys County, and were the parents of Esq. G.M. Tubb l'Ansearchin'" News 90 His;tory of Dickson County (continued) anCi others. Jane Leech, another daughter, married David Bell. chi-ld, and the husband and son died many years before Aunt Jane been dead long. Jacob Leech, a son of the said Edward, married daUlghter of Holloway Morris, a Baptist minister of that day and They had but one Bell, who has not Priscilla Morris, a time. The said Holloway Morris, for a number of years, lived in Montgomery County, and before he died he had removed to this County. He preached allover this country. He and his wife, Delilah Morris, are .buried at the old "Hurricane meeting house" in Mon.tgomery County. He officiated as the minister when Nathan Tubb and Lavey Leech were married. The old man was strong in the faith of his church, and believed that no other mode of baptism would do, except that by immersion. After his daughter, PrLscilla, had married Jacob Leech some time, she concluded to join the Cumberland Presbyterian church, at the old Johnson's Creek meeting house. The old man went to church on that occasion very much against the grain, however, took his seat over near the door and witnessed the proceedings up to the time when the preparations were made for the sprinkling, when he was heard to say to himself, though audible to some near him, "Great God, I cannot witness such desecration," and rose from his seat and left the house. He died in the full triumphs of the Gospel, believing that he had been right all his life. He was the grandfather of the writer. Jacob Leech and his family moved to the state of Arkansas, where his children now live. Daniel Leech, another son of the said Edward, married Martha Vick, who was known for years as Aunt Patsy Leech. They lived a happy and contented life in this imTI1ediate vicinity. They are both dead, having reached a good old age before being caLled home. They were long members of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and were known of "all men" for their piety. Daniel Leech was a man of strong native mind, even temper, slow to anger, tolerant and charitable. His home was the home of the preacher for fifty odd years, and many remember him as a camper at Big Spring and other camp grounds. The Lord had bountifully blessed him, and whilst his Maker was shoveling in, he never hesitated to shovel out in charity, when he felt that duty required it. He left a large family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in the community. T.C.M. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * JOSHUA K.
