MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Assalamu-alaikum-wa-rahmathullahi-wa-barakathu.
I pray to Allah (s.w.t) that this message finds you and your families in good health and high Islamic Spirit.
A warm welcome to all students and staff members who are returning this year. I would also like to welcome new
staff members who are joining Minaret College in 2016. Two senior members have joined the college
management this year.
Mr. Subhan Ali has joined Minaret College as Admin Manager and brings with him a wealth of experience in
various fields. At the same time, one of the longest serving teachers, Mr. Sead Omerovic has been appointed as
Principal of Springvale Campus. I am confident that the contribution of these two senior members will have a
positive impact on the progress of the College.
It is with great pleasure I can inform you that once again our students were among the top VCE high achievers in
Victoria. In 2015 they achieved excellent results in all VCE studies and Yusuf Hassan, with an ATAR of 99.75,
was Dux of School. I would like to congratulate Afreen Qamar on getting a perfect score of 50 in English (EAL). I
am very proud of all 81 students who put tremendous efforts throughout the year and completed Year 12. I also
congratulate all the teachers who contributed in every possible way for the success of our students.
Minaret College continues to provide additional facilities to cope with the ever increasing enrolments, both at
Springvale and Officer Campuses. Springvale Campus this year has reached its full capacity, while enrolment at
Officer Campus has significantly increased this year and stands at 546 to-date.
I take this opportunity to thank all parents
for their continuing support and cooperation towards Minaret College and for
helping to make this institution as it stands
today. Minaret College is committed to
serving the Islamic Community of this
region with an excellent system of
education that incorporates Islamic values
and teaching.
Let us do our best to educate our children
to become law abiding, well-mannered
Australian Muslim citizens.
May Allah (swt) guide us to serve His
cause and give us the wisdom.

have been appointed by the College Director to
lead the Administration functions of the College.
Minaret College has grown substantially with total
number of students reaching 1800 between the 2

The growth brings a range of
challenges;
hence
the
College
recently
underwent organisational restructure to improve
the ever demanding services to the community.
There are now 3 functional areas in the structure
namely; Academic, Finance and Administration.
The Academic areas are led by 2 Principals
whilst Finance area is led by current business
manager C.Harris assisted by Hussain Muradh.

Focusing on my role I am leading the administration
functions which includes; capital projects, campus
master planning, building and grounds maintenance,
Information Technology, Marketing and Educational
Services, HR and other admin related functions.
I have had many years of experience in architecture,
civil engineering, construction and facilities
management, corporate management services in
educational settings in Australia, New Zealand and
Fiji. Prior to joining Minaret College I worked as
Manager, Built Environment Services for Chisholm
Institute.
Given that Springvale has reached its maximum
capacity and the Officer campus located within the
growth precinct in the south east corridor, it is
opportune time to engage with our stakeholders so
that we can produce sustainable campus master
plans to cater for the community needs.
I believe facilities are very important component of
student learning development. For 21st century
educational built environment there is need to rethink
in light of the amazing new-style of revolution which
is already sweeping the planet – it is the power of
electronic communication
which
is already
transforming our lives. With this in mind the master
planning will address our built environmental needs
for 21st century.
I would like to support as best as I can to
differentiate Minaret College through the provision of
educational excellence by having the best
educational facilities and equipment. This can be
achieved through quality delivery, strong educational
planning and a positive student learning experience;
all of which contribute to our student’s success.
As our journey continues and as part of our
commitment to continuous improvement it was very
important to review our organisational structure to
ensure we were best positioned to achieve our
strategic goals, particularly around teaching and
learning.
In 2016 I will be extensively involved in the
preparation of campus master planning to maximize
the capacity and better utilization of land resources.
Furthermore I will also be embarking upon planning
and design of new Kindergarten and VCE Centre at
Springvale campus and VCE Centre, administration
and multi-purpose hall at Officer Campus In Sha
Allah. We will also be planning for safer traffic
management at Officer Campus. The Springvale
campus will now have its own “Place of Assembly”
building with construction starting in April 2016 In
Sha Allah.
The other important changes that I will be initiating
include systems and process improvements with
clarity to roles, responsibilities and accountabilities
within the support areas.
- Page 3 -
I honestly believe that to maintain the success of
Minaret College we will be measured on the
following performances; financial stewardship,
efficiencies by having business processes,
knowledge innovation in teaching and learning
and customer satisfaction. Our largest customers
are students and parents.
I am very excited to be part of the Senior
Management team. I would like to take this
opportunity via the College Newsletter to ask you
to support your colleagues and our leaders
through this process of realignment, whether or
not your area of the business is impacted.
I look forward to the continued growth and
success of our great organisation In Sha Allah

Message From Principal

Message From Principal
Officer Campus
As a newly appointed Principal of Springvale
Campus I would like to take this opportunity to
welcome all the students, parents and staff to the
2016 academic year.
It has been an excellent start to 2016 at Officer
Campus with all teachers and students settling in
wonderfully well.
I joined Minaret College back in 1998 and over the
past 18 years I have held various roles and at the
same time witnessed many changes. The school has
grown from having about 200 students and just one
class per year level to more than 1200 students in
Springvale and another campus in Officer.
However, Minaret College is more than numbers and
buildings. What we do today at school as teachers
will have long-lasting effects on our students and the
community at large. Our task is the most noble:
shape the development of the next generation of
Australian Muslims and global citizens who can
honourably and confidently deal with all challenges.
It may sound like a cliché, but our students are
tomorrow’s leaders. I have met many past Minaret
students who are now adults and have successful
careers. Some of them have brought their children to
Primary school, while others have returned to
Minaret as teachers or support staff. It’s a vote of
confidence and a testimony that Minaret family will
continue to grow.
As far as academic results are concerned, last year
Minaret bid farewell to the 16th generation of VCE
graduates. Their overall results were impressive,
which resulted in a high percentage of tertiary offers.
More information is available on the last page.
I am confident that our dedicated staff will continue
to offer the best learning experience, both secular
and Islamic, to all students, starting from Foundation
to Year 12. A list with all class/form teachers and
their emails is included in this newsletter for your
perusal.
Contemporary research suggests that parents'
active involvement in their child's education
brings great rewards due to the positive impact it
brings to their children's lives. While parents
expect their children to do well, a sustained
interest in their academic progress provides all
important ingredients, which are vital for students’
motivation and subsequent success.
This team effort continues with our teachers who
are passionately dedicated to developing the
most effective ways for all students to learn and
achieve their ambitions. Ms Jamilah Giousoh, our
Secondary School Team Leader, and Ms
Masouda Keshtiar our Primary School Team
Leader will resume their roles in providing me
both assistance and great leadership.
I would also like to remind parents that our team
is always available to advise parents and are
happy to receive your calls or meet you in
person. Our Secondary Curriculum Coordinator,
Ms Verity Keely, is also available to speak to
parents about all academic matters.
Please call to arrange a suitable appointment
time if you have any concerns about your child
that you wish to discuss.
On a final note, Minaret Officer is proud to be
offering an incredibly rich VCE program this year.
Students and parents who have any questions
regarding VCE administrative matters can contact
Ms Amalthea McMartin or Br Salaheldin
Kolasinac.
I am looking forward to working with you all.
I once again invite and encourage all parents to
increase your participation in school activities and
to continue supporting your child’s education.

Curriculum Matters
VISION 2020 FOR MINARET COLLEGE
We are optimistic that implementation of the new
strategic plan would place Minaret College in the
league of top schools in Victoria. Accordingly, we are
very keen and enthusiastic about implementing new
initiatives which would help us to transform Minaret
College into a Centre for Excellence in education,
inshah Allah.
model also addresses the specific needs of the
Muslim Community members involved in the
school, which include students, parents and the
Muslim community members at large.
The model outlines four interrelated levels as
follows: (1) Primary prevention; (2) Early
intervention; (3) Intervention and (4) Restoring
well-being.
The curriculum focus for 2016 include E-learning
where primary students can access Ipads in the
classrooms to support their learning using different
apps. Secondary students have laptops in their
classrooms.
The Islamic perspective is built in a dynamic way
with many illustrations and facts based on the
teachings of Qur’an, Hadith and research done in
this area. We have also introduced Personal
development classes at all year levels, from
Foundation to Year 12s.
Another priority for this year is the establishment of
Professional Learning Teams (PLTs). The PLTs
involve teachers working in a spirit of openness and
critical reflection, sharing their experiences, ideas
and expertise with each other and engaging in an
ongoing process of inquiry that promotes deep team
learning.
In the Middle school, these classes are
timetabled while in other levels it is on demand.
Our department comprises: Special Needs
including Speech Therapy; Counselling, Mental
Health Education and Students’ Leadership.
Please feel free to contact us for any support you
need.
The teams’ focus is on improving student outcomes.
We are providing intervention programs for students
requiring further support, from the beginning of the
year, to enhance their literacy, numeracy, scientific
and Qur’an reading skills. Given the positive feedback which we have received from parents and
students last year, we are going to continue with the
after-school classes for secondary students to
support our them.
May Allah guide us to serve our Muslim
community
We hope that teachers, parents and students would
all help and support us to achieve the goals of Vision
2020 for Minaret College, Inshah Allah.
On behalf of the Junior Primary team, I would like
to extend a very warm welcome to students and
parents for the 2016 academic year. A very
special welcome to the students of Foundation
who joined the Minaret family along with new staff

Message From Student Services
I would like to welcome the students, parents and
staff to a new academic year. Our department team
members have put in place a model for our students
that is; comprehensive in scope, preventive in design
and developmental in Nature.
The program focuses on what all students in both
campuses, from Prep to years 11/12 should know,
understand, and be able to do in three domains of
student development: Academic, personal/social and
career.
The goal is to impart specific skills and learning
opportunities in a proactive, preventive manner,
ensuring all students can achieve school success
through academic, personal/social development
experiences and career.
It is also designed to meet the needs of students
throughout various developmental stages.
The

Today’s education not only caters to the
academic aspects of a students learning, but also
the cognitive, social and emotional development.
Alhamdulillah we are very grateful to be entrusted
with the youngest members of our school
community. Starting school can be one of the
most challenging and overwhelming time in a
child’s life, but we as a team aim to make that
journey an exciting and a memorable experience
Insha Allah.
Looking forward to working with you this year to
provide the very best for our children. May Allah

On behalf of the Senior Primary team, I welcome all
students and parents to the 2016 academic year,
especially all new families joining Minaret College. A
warm welcome to new staff members who have
joined us this year.
Moving into Years 3 to 6, students are expected to
show more responsibility for their learning and
behaviour as they prepare to step into Secondary
School. We empower to our students to portray a
culture of self-discipline and good manners by
following the Hadith, “The best of you in Islam are
those with the best of manners.”
The ultimate aim is achieving progress and success
in both secular and Islamic education for all our
students.
Together with the committed team of teaching staff,
we will continue to work with dedication to help the
students step up to greater heights, Insha Allah. We
hope to establish a strong home-school partnership

On behalf of the middle school, I would like to
warmly welcome back students and parents to
Minaret College for the 2016 academic year.
Term 1 is a very busy time in the school year, as our
students settle into new routines and familiarise
themselves with new timetables. It’s also an exciting
time as the beginning of a new academic year
means that all possibilities are open to all students.
Our vision for the Middle school revolves around
facilitating the development of our students in the
following five ways:
(1) Islamic identity,
(2) academic results,
(3) manners, character and behaviour,
(4) leadership skills, and
(5) welfare and wellbeing.
All we ask of students is to exert their very best
effort within all the facets of their schooling life
and we aim to achieve this vision by building a
strong relationship with our students based upon
guidance, care, discipline and respect.
If we are to achieve our objectives, we will also
require support from the home. Please assist us
by encouraging your child to adhere to all of the
policies and procedures of the school.
We hope that we can have a very successful year
working together as partners in the education of
your children.
If you have any queries throughout the year,
please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our
Year Level Coordinators on 9574 0567 or via

Congratulations to the Year 12 graduating class
of 2015! Alhamdulillah they have achieved one of
the best VCE results in the history of Minaret
College. The Dux of the school, Yusuf Hassan
obtained ATAR 99.75. Almost 25% of the cohort
achieved ATAR 80 and above. It is an excellent
result to be celebrated and proud of. Insha Allah
we will work towards even better results for year
2016.
Classes for VCE subjects have started earlier this
year with our Head Start programme. The
attendance of students had been encouraging.
Parents are advised to get involved by monitoring
their sons/daughters school attendance and
academic performance. Students cannot miss
more than 10% of classes. All absences are to be
verified with Medical certificates.
Your interest in your son/daughter’s VCE studies
will certainly motivate them to achieve their
potentials. The partnership between home and
school is highly crucial if we are to continue
achieving further success.
I look forward to working very closely with you
this year. In the Senior School we will continue to
focus on our students’ development of Islamic
characters and values, positive well-being,
academic success, leadership potentials, and
career aspirations.
Throughout the year if you have any concern
regarding your child, please do not hesitate to
contact me or any of the Year level coordinators.

All teachers and students at Officer Primary School
are looking forward to another exciting year.
In 2016 Officer Campus will be having three classes
across Foundation to Year 3 levels and two classes
across Year 4 to 6 levels. Our dedicated teachers
believe our role is to embark on the child's journey,
while providing clear instruction, responding to needs
and facilitating learning, to ensure the development
of key skills. The Officer Campus has introduced
flexible teaching practices that promote individual
self-expression.
Children learn in different ways, and our teachers are
highly skilled in identifying the individual needs of
each child.
Ms Khatol Obaid has been appointed as the Literacy
Coordinator and Ms Aparna Powale as the
Numeracy Coordinator.
Daily structure of the Primary School has been
changed to four blocks per day. A five minute Fruit
break has been added this year and I ask parents to
send a piece of fruit with their child to school.
Secondary School Team LeaderOfficer Campus
The Secondary School team at Officer Campus
welcomes all of our new students, teachers and
parents to the school. We also extend a very
warm welcome to our Year 7 students who are
embarking on a very exciting journey.
Both the Middle School and Senior School
students at Officer have started the 2016
academic year on a very pleasing and positive
note. Year 10s and 11s have commenced their
VCE subjects and are working hard with their
teachers to achieve their goals and reach for
success.
In Secondary School the theme for Term 1 is
RESPECT and RESILIENCE which will be a focal
point for class discussions and presentations.
Students are encouraged to express themselves
through presenting in assemblies and joining
extracurricular activities and programs. We are
also very pleased to be implementing a new
program called ‘Connections’ which will run for
year 7 to 9 students. The ‘Connections’ program
enables Middle School students to develop 21st
Century skills like ‘Communication’, ‘Critical
Thinking’, ‘Collaboration’ and ‘creativity’.

Public Transport Victoria
Important Information To Parents
Please find below some import information regarding Victoria’s student and concession travel ticketing
arrangements for 2016.
Proof of concession entitlement
All students aged 17 and over, or those requiring a half yearly or yearly Student pass(regardless of age), are
required to obtain a 2016 Victorian Public Transport (VPT) student concession Card as proof of their
concession entitlement. It is important to note that school issued student identification cards are not accepted
as entitlement to concession travel on public transport.
2016 Victorian Student Pass
The Victorian Student Pass provides travel for students on all metropolitan trains, trams and buses, all
regional bus services and all V/Line train and coach services operating wholly within Victoria. The Victorian
Student Pass is issued on a myki.
How to apply for a 2016 VPT Student Concession Card and/or a Student Pass
The 2016 VPT Student Concession Card & Student Pass Application Form can be obtained from:





Metropolitan premium train stations
PTV Hubs (Southern Cross Station, Dockland Geelong and Bendigo)
V/Line staffed stations and ticket agents
PTV Call Centre by calling 1800 800 007
online at ptv.vic.gov.au
Students wishing to Purchase a Half Yearly ($285.00) or Yearly ($546.00) Victorian Student Pass will
be required to obtain a 2016 VPT Student Concession Card, regardless of age, as proof of their concession
entitlement. The standard $9 fee applies. Student pass loaded to their existing myki card at a metropolitan
premium train station. If the student does not already have a myki, the Student Pass will be loaded onto a
new myki. This myki will be issued on the spot with the myki card fee waived.
Registration
Registration is optional for students that hold a student pass. It is, however, strongly recommended that
students register their myki online at ptv.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 007. Benefits of registering a
myki include:



The balance on the myki is protected if it is reported lost or stolen
Option to manage myki with an online account
Option of auto top up for ‘set and forget’ convenience
If a myki is not registered, there is no way for a student to recover the value held on the card in the event it is
lost or stolen.
Further information specific to student travel arrangements under myki can be obtain by visiting website.
