Mint Issue 63 - Royal Australian Mint
September 2005 Number 63
Dear Collector
Welcome to September Mint Issue. This month we feature the
Sydney Mint sesquicentenary coin and release some of the most
anticipated products in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth
Games Coin program.
I am particularly fond of the Sydney Mint coin and Collectors will
note the technically challenging gold plating on both the obverse
and reverse of this piece. This design employs skilled artistry in
recreating the Sydney Mint building sketch from its early history,
during the years from 1910 to 1915. This $10 coin is a fitting tribute to an
institution famous for striking Australia’s first Sovereign.
Excitement will be high among Collectors this month with the release of
four premier products in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games
coin program; the unique Kilo coin as well as the bold three coin set
featuring a tri coloured coin, plus two other highly collectible coins
entitled the The City of Sport and the Commonwealth Nations Coin.
The Three Coin Set is looking great and is the perfect addition to
what is already an important and attractive collection. This set
embodies all the important aspects of the Games from the
representation of the winners’ medals to the recognition of
all the nations competing at the event.
I know Melbourne will embrace the City of Sport coin and
hope all Collectors will be taken with its design. Many
staff here, with a discerning and critical eye, have
already ear marked it as a favourite from the range.
Please enjoy this edition of Mint Issue and come
and see us at the Melbourne Agricultural show from
the 15th to the 25th September at the Melbourne
Showgrounds.

Sydney Mint Sesquicentenary - 1855 to 2005
While the Royal Australian Mint celebrates its 40th birthday this
year, the Sydney Mint will be blowing out a few more candles on
the cake – 150 to be exact.
Regarded as one of the oldest, classically detailed historic buildings
in Australia, it remains one of Sydney’s most popular attractions,
even though it has not operated as a mint since the 1920s.
Opened in 1855, the Sydney Mint created some of Australia’s
first circulating coins that are today among the most sought
after by collectors.
As Sydney has matured and modernised, the Mint has undergone
several renovations and housed a range of professions and
organisations, including government departments and law courts.
To celebrate the Mint’s 150th birthday, the Royal Australian Mint
is proud to offer a stunning limited edition anniversary coin.
The Sydney Mint Sesquicentenary 1855–2005 $10
Commemorative Coin does the milestone great justice – it is
produced from fine silver and is selectively gold plated on both
the reverse and obverse. The image depicted on the coin is an
artistic impression of the building in the period 1900 to 1910.
The effect is striking and unique, and its limited mintage of only
10 000 means this commemorative coin will be highly sought
after and valued.

2005 $1 Mintmark Coin
1915 Gallipoli
The Royal Australian Mint has received an almost unprecedented
response to the 2005 $1 Gallipoli Mintmark Coin.
Australian and overseas collectors have been drawn to the coin’s iconic
image of the lone bugler playing the Last Post – an evocative tribute to
the thousands of men and women who have lost their lives defending
Australia’s freedom.
2005 marks the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, and the
Royal Australian Mint has commemorated it with a coin of strength
and simplicity.
It truly honours the legend of the ANZAC spirit, forged by soldiers from
Australia and New Zealand who fought the battle of their lives with
mateship, pride and courage.
The Royal Australian Mint’s Mintmark Series has been hugely popular,
and its design includes a letter stamped into the face of the coin.
Mintmarks released to date include ‘B’ for Brisbane, ‘C’ for Canberra,
‘S’ for Sydney – and a special ‘G’ for Gallipoli which sold out in 2 weeks.
This month the Royal Australian Mint releases the much anticipated
‘M’ Mintmark Coin – the ‘M’ standing for Melbourne. Don’t miss an
opportunity to complete your collection with this coin or start your
collection with our special offer on page 3.
These coins are finished to an uncirculated standard and come in a
specially designed Gallipoli display card.

Many collectors and coin enthusiasts have fallen in love with the limited mintage
2005 Gold and Silver year sets – and the feelings of Australian pride they evoke.
The Royal Australian Mint has released proof and uncirculated six coin sets that
capture the spirit and essence of Peace, Coming Home and Remembrance – and
mark 60 years since the end of World War II.
This September, discerning collectors like you have just one more opportunity
to share in what has proved to be one of the Royal Australian Mint’s most
popular collections ever.
More and more Australians are now making the effort to ensure the men and
women who gave their lives in service to their country are not forgotten.
This has been seen in swelling attendances at Anzac and VP Day ceremonies
– and in the number of children who now participate in marches proudly wearing
the medals of their grandfathers, great grandfathers and great-great grandfathers.
The Royal Australian Mint wants to carry on this tradition and its 2005 Year Sets,
Proof and Uncirculated, will serve as a continuing reminder of this important
period in Australia’s history.
The Mint’s themes will soon be changing, so don’t delay in securing one of
these treasured sets.
