SIX BY SONDHEIM
HBO Documentary Films
Directed by
James Lapine
Rated TV14; 84 minutes
“Everybody has problems. Nobody goes throug
h life unscathed, and I think if you write about
those things, you’re going to touch people,”
says Stephen Sondheim at the start of Six by
Sondheim, an intimate look into his long and
prolific career creating ground-breaking work
that has redefined the musical theater. Direct
ed by award-winning Broadway director and
playwright James Lapine, and predominan
tly told by Sondheim himself, this 84-minute
film
weaves together dozens of interviews of Sondh
eim, conducted throughout his illustrious
career. Archival performances of Sondheim
classics by stars like Bernadette Peters and
Ethel Merman are interspersed with new perfor
mances produced exclusively for this feature
documentary, showcasing such stars as Audra
McDonald, Darren Criss and America Ferrer
a.
Blending theatrical footage with rare intervi
ew footage and Sondheim’s candid anecdotes,
the film underscores Sondheim’s unique, conve
rsational songwriting style, and focuses on
Sondheim’s experiences writing six songs: “Some
thing’s Coming,” “Opening Doors,” “Send
in the Clowns,” “I’m Still Here,” “Being Alive”
and “Sunday.” Art and life are intertwined for
Sondheim, and Six by Sondheim is a story of
both.

MONDAYS AT RACINE
STATE OF PLAY: TROPHY KIDS
Directed by Oscar®-winner Cynthia Wade, Mondays at Racine tells the
uplifting story of Rachel Demolfetto and Cynthia Sansone, two sisters
who do their part in the fight against cancer by providing free beauty
treatments - hair, makeup, manicures and pedicures - to cancer patients
at their salon every month. The sisters have a personal motivation in
offering such treatments: they watched their mother grow reclusive and
depressed after being diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1980s. Now,
they own a beauty salon called Racine in Long Island, NY, which they
open free of charge to women with cancer once a month on Mondays.
Their goal: to give cancer patients a sense of normalcy and beauty, and
in doing so, combat the fear that accompanies the disease. Airing during
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this 39-minute documentary profiles
several of Racine's regulars, many of whom wake up with the clumps of
hair on their pillow, a symbol of the hair loss caused by chemotherapy.
Without hair, “you feel like you're being erased,” one woman offers.
Cancer can rob many women of their ability to feel like the person they
once were, but Cynthia and Rachel are determined to help, with a little
bit of blush and a lot of handholding.
HBO Sports and executive producers Peter Berg and
Sarah Aubrey team up again for the innovative new
documentary film series State of Play. the show takes on
complex and multi-layered themes in sports, exploring
their relationship to larger society. Each new edition
spotlights a topic or person whose impact on the sports
world is undeniable, opening with a brief overview
followed by a 40-minute cinéma vérité documentary
and concluding with an in-depth, 20-minute roundtable
discussion of the issue with the filmmakers, subjects and
guest experts. Emmy® nominee Berg (Friday Night Lights)
serves as moderator of the panel discussion.

Gilbert is a personal journey that follows a

relationship with Chris, a single father facing
similar circumstances, and the Chambliss

Rated TVPG;

QUESTIONING DARWIN
There is an entire generation of American Muslim children who do not
know a world before September 11, 2001. These children have never
experienced a country which is largely unaware of, or neutral about,
Islam. Instead, their faith is scrutinized and patriotism questioned,
even before they can grasp these very adult concepts. The Education
of Mohammad Hussein, a 38-minute documentary short directed by
Academy Award® nominees Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus
Camp), takes the viewer inside a tightly knit Muslim community in the
economically depressed Detroit-Hamtramck neighborhood, focusing
on the children who attend a traditional Islamic school, Al-Ikhlas. The
film captures a year where the kids and their neighborhood have an
unwelcome visitor, notorious Koran-burning Florida preacher Terry
Jones, who arrives to provoke them with hateful rhetoric and anti-Muslim
demonstrations. The community’s reaction to this challenge lies at
the heart of the film, which gives a quietly searing view of a post-9/11
America that is struggling to live up to its promise of tolerance and civil
justice for all.
Literal and creationist interpretation of the Bible is the fastest-growing
branch of Christianity in the U.S. and around the world, with 46% of
Americans believing the Genesis account of creation is the literal truth.
Directed by award-winning British documentarian Antony Thomas
(HBO's For Neda), Questioning Darwin takes an in-depth look at the
views of creationist Christians, who reject Charles Darwin's theory of
evolution, while also examining how Darwin handled the question of
God as he developed his theory of natural selection in the mid-1800s.
Featuring interviews with Darwin historians and biographers, ministers
and creationist Christians, and Darwin's own words through his
letters and writings (voiced by actor Sam West), the film is a balanced
examination of a 150-year debate, which has only increased in the last
two decades with the rise of evangelical Christianity in the U.S. The
film also illuminates little-known facts about Darwin's life, placing one
of the greatest scientific minds in historical context. By turns thought
provoking and infuriating, Questioning Darwin will inspire debate
among believers on both sides of the issue.

LIFE ACCORDING TO SAM

Rated TVG;

®
An official selection in the U.S. Documentary
Competition at the 2013 Sundance Film
Festival, Life According to Sam explores the
remarkable world of Sam Berns and the
relentless pursuit of a treatment and cure by
his parents (both doctors) to save their son
from the fatal and extremely rare disease proger
ia, a progressive aging disorder. Directed
by Sean and Andrea Fine (2013 Oscar® winne
rs for Inocente), this incredibly moving film
chronicles three years of the family's inspiri
ng efforts, which led to the first clinical drug
trials and the discovery that progeria is linked
to the human aging process. Without such
a link, garnering support to research treatm
ents for the mere 250 people on the planet
with progeria would be far more difficult today.
As Sam's resilient parents race against
the clock (average life expectancy for a person
with progeria is 13 years) to find a cure,
Sam embraces his circumstances with admira
ble courage. His family empowers him to
enjoy his childhood as they seek what every
family wants - to make the most of their time
together. Following Sam's triumphs and strugg
les as he philosophically plays the hand he
has been dealt, Life According to Sam reveal
s the wisdom beyond his years.

REDEMPTION
Redemption follows a cast of characters from the five boroughs of NYC
as they scrape together a living - five cents at a time. Emmy®-winning
filmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill followed several men and
women over the course of a year, providing a poignant glimpse into the
daily lives and struggles of those who scavenge the city's garbage cans
and recycling bins. The subjects' previous occupations - short-order
cooks, computer-sales executives, factory workers - all fell victim to an
evaporation of jobs, as businesses and restaurants closed in the rocky
years since the economic downturn. This 36-minute documentary short
highlights the sense of community among the canners, many of whom
have spent a decade working beside each other on the sidewalks,
shunned by most New Yorkers and underserved by social services. But
as more people turn to canning, the search to collect enough bottles and
cans to survive grows more difficult. Despite the numbing work and long
hours, they maintain their pride, insisting “It's honorable work, no matter
what people say.” As for the nontraditional livelihoods of their subjects,
Alpert and O'Neill prove in this series of intimate portraits that one man's
trash is truly another's treasure

WHOOPI GOLDBERG
PRESENTS MOMS MABLEY
Acclaimed actress/comedienne Whoopi Goldberg directs and appears
in this feature documentary about Jackie “Moms” Mabley, an AfricanAmerican stand-up comic and show-biz pioneer who emerged from the
Chitlin’ Circuit of African-American Vaudeville to become a mainstream
star on the stage and TV. Mabley pushed the boundaries of comedy by
tackling topics such as gender, sex and racism, making her one of the first
taboo-pushing comedians on the comedy circuit. Once billed as “The
Funniest Woman in the World,” Mabley performed up until her death in
1975. The film includes vintage clips and recordings of Mabley through
the years, as well as recent interviews with some of the world’s top
comedians, including Eddie Murphy, Joan Rivers, Kathy Griffin, Robert
Klein, Bill Cosby and Goldberg – each of whom is a huge Mabley fan. A
true passion project for first-time director Goldberg, the documentary
shows Mabley’s historical significance and profound influence as a
performer vastly ahead of her time.
