Russian film company Artist started shooting 20-series dramedy with tentative title Local news about the routine life of the
provincial newspaper crew. Currently the shooting of the project, commissioned by TV-channel Russia 2, is taking place in
Rostov-na-Donu.

Synopsis: team of journalists who want to make sensations and
find the most stunning events is in the centre of this story. But a
press photographer Maxim will soon have some really incredible
adventures. By a strange quirk of fate the guy has to come back
to his native town Rostov-na-Donu. After long time spent abroad
Maxim has forgotten about the way of life in Russia and its moral
principles. However he has to earn for living and is looking for a
job in one of the local newspapers. This decision marks a turning
point in his career and future.

Russian director Alexander Basayev has recently launched into
production his new project – multi-episode drama with a tentative title Rare Blood Type. Currently the shooting is taking place
in Kherson region and then will move to Odessa film studio. The
drama is planned to premier on Channel One Russia and Ukrainian TV-channel Inter next spring.

Genre: drama.
Synopsis: it’s a true-to-life story about a young woman who
works as a nurse in a municipal hospital. She lives far away from
it in a deserted village along with old people. This disappointing
situation affects all spheres of her monotonous life. But the way
she treats her parents, relatives, neighbors and colleagues really
amuses the viewer. Her soul is open and sincere to everyone.
One can come across such a person very rarely, especially in
modern society. The series tells the dramatic story of true kindness without using some special effects or criminal scenes.

Russian filmmaker Alexander Kott is directing 4-episode project with a tentative title The Third World War. Shooting is held
in the Tver region. The project is commissioned by Channel One
Russia. Series premiere is set for 2013.

Synopsis: the scene is set during the Cuban missile crisis between the United States and the Soviet Union brought the world
to the brink of nuclear war in October 1962. At those times the
USSR was desperately behind the USA in the arms race. So the
Soviet Union announced general mobilization of the man-power.
Everybody is waiting for the worst while two hearts find each other. The plot presents a tragic love-story.

DT PRODUCTION
Russian film company DT Production kicked off the production of 8-episode suspense detective with a tentative title Cesar.
Currently the filming is taking place in Moscow and its outskirts.
The project premiere is planned for 2013.
Synopsis: Alexei Govorkov works as a journalist and press photographer with a nickname Cesar unveiling all failures of police
and officials on his own internet-portal. The police chief in order
to save his own reputation makes unexpected step and invites
Cesar to join the investigation department as an observer who
could show and reflect police real activities. But this investigation
group is given the simplest cases though nobody could predict
that the journalist will look at easy tasks as at really difficult and
complicated. Cesar sees and processes facts that ordinary officers miss. But the more Govorkov interferes into police work
the more irritation and aggression his actions evoke. Moreover
one of the agents suspects the journalist of being involved in the
range of crimes.

Russian group of companies Gamma Production is shooting
28-episode action Marine devils. A Twist of Fate: Tornado.
The series is commissioned by Russian TV-channel NTV. Project
premier is planned for 2013.
Synopsis: the main characters of the action are special mission
agents. They form one team but work separately. Each of them
is responsible for his or her own mission. Their work embraces
all spheres of their lives for agents are always ready for new instructions. Their holidays can be abruptly interrupted and it’s not
a surprise. Soldiers under cover have nobody but themselves to
take care of the country.

Russian production company Good Story Media started working on multi-episode detective Bones based on the American
Fox TV net format. The project is currently in preproduction period, casting is underway. Series is commissioned by Russian TV
channel CTC.

Synopsis: A forensic anthropologist and a cocky FBI agent build
a team to investigate death causes. And quite often, there isn’t
more to examine than rotten flesh or mere bones.

Synopsis: The series follows a family of six. Malcolm is a moreor-less normal boy who tests at genius level; he enjoys being

Russian production studio Green Film started shooting 4-episode TV melodrama One for All. The series is commissioned by

Synopsis: Evgeniy Alexandrov, a 40 year old retired lieutenant
colonel, initiates a divorce with his wife. Evgeniy leaves his property (a car and a flat) to his ex- spouse and moves from Moscow
to his native town. There Alexandrov finds a house he lived in
the childhood. Many things have changed since those carefree
times. And now only old women with their daughters and young
single mothers live at this address. Evgeniy begins to understand
the house inhabitants and tries to help them to solve their problems by investigating some strange stories, catching criminals
and protecting guiltless people.

Kiev and Israel city Haifa. The series premier is set for autumn 2013.
Synopsis: Lika and Kira are the only reason for Mila and Kostya
staying together. The wife has a lover Tomash who in contrast to
hopeless Kostya works and earns enough money. At the same
time Anna and her son Sergey are waiting for their husband and

In the middle of September Russian creative association New
Project started shooting 26-series teenage comedy Loves me,
loves me not. Filming is taking place in Moscow. The series is
commissioned by TV-channel CTC.
Synopsis: funny and touching stories from life of young Lelya
who has arrived to Moscow from a small provincial town. The girl
has come there in order to find her true and deep love. She is
not the one seeking for fame or temptations of the megalopolis.
Even in Moscow she happens to live accidentally. Earlier the girl
followed her school boyfriend thinking she loved him till death.
But everything turned in a different way.

of 12-episode comedy with a tentative title Women’s riot or The
War in Novoselkovo. The filming took place in the Myshkino village in Mozhajsk district of Moscow region. The series premiere
is planned for this winter.

On the other hand guests are unpleasantly surprised at the reaction of villagers who look very hostile. It’s high time to give an
answer but locals have their own rules and laws.

OPERATION “PUPPETEER”
SERIES
Russian production company Pyramid is working on 32-episode detective Operation “Puppeteer”. Currently the project
is in postproduction stage. The series is commissioned by Russian NTV channel.
PYRAMID
Synopsis: Silver is a shameless smuggler who is involved in a
slave trade. His mission is to transport slave girls to rich clients. As
a cover fairytale he uses a story about promising job of a waitress
abroad. And naïve women living in the CIS countries believe him.
Victims are sent abroad legally and then criminals smuggle girls
across the border to hidden brothels. This scheme has worked
without risk of loss for a long time and thousands of women were
caught in this trap. But the day for punishment has come. The
Special Forces have enough power to ruin this slavery system and
to release women. Secret agents will wrap up these acts of extreme violence saving lives of many innocent girls.

Russian Studio Russkoye is working on 16-episode romance
Poor Relatives. The project is currently shooting in Moscow.

Synopsis: USSR, the postwar period. The life of little girl Sima
turns into a tragedy for her parents are claimed to be enemies
of the people. The whole family is subjected to repression so all
move to a village. After some time 17 year old Serafima comes
back to the city and finds out that her room is occupied by someone. But she faces another problem. She has no chance to enter the university because of her parent’s past. Fortunately Kira
Petrovna, a landlady, teaches the girl to type and offers her a job.
One day Sima falls in love for the first time and loses her head
because of landlady’s nephew. He is a student at the University
of Theatre Arts. The girl is astonished when she finds out that her
lover has disappeared and robbed his aunt’s flat. But it’s just a
beginning of her misfortunes for she is pregnant…

couple has no money for living so they move to a village where

first this way of life doesn’t seem to be a difficult one, but noone
could predict the final.

At the end of September Russian World Studios production
company finished filming 8-episode romance Ideal marriage.
The project is in post-production now. Shooting was held in the
RWS St. Petersburg Studio and on the streets of St. Petersburg.
Synopsis: Natalya Feoktistova is successful 36 year old marketing manager and at the same time big company head assistant.
She has truly established herself as a well-paid professional.
This independent woman is very attractive but the only thing she
doesn’t own is a family. Natasha’s dream is to have a child but
unfortunately her ex- fiancé and probable father of her baby disappears from her life. Nevertheless the woman decides to give
birth to a child for she understands that she could do it without
being married. Now she wants to live alone despite all problems
and without anybody’s help.

Synopsis: Nastya is a lucky girl. She studies at University and has
a reliable and loving boyfriend. His name is Arthur and he is a
businessman. Nastya moves from the hostel to Arthur’s luxury
flat. They have everything they need and don’t think about money. Nastya doesn’t even need a financial support from her father
Pavel Mironov. But one day Pavel is going to visit his daughter
but finds out another picture.

Russian director Yuriy Moroz started filming of a multi-episode
drama with a tentative title Mesalliance. The principal photography is held in Moscow and before that some scenes were shot
in Crimea.
Synopsis: Mesalliance is nothing special now. It’s just an alliance between man and woman which is based on general rules
of family psychology. One can notice that mesalliances happen
to occur more and more often especially in modern society. But
such marriage could lead to unexpected, shocking, annoying,
regrettable and upsetting consequences.

THE YOUTHY
SERIES
Russian company YBW Group is shooting multi-episode youth
series The Youthy. CTC TV channel has commissioned just
40 episodes of the project. The show is planned to air close to
Olympics 2014.
YBW GROUP
Synopsis: it’s a story about young ice-hockey players who are
training in one team. The series opens their lives, relationships
with friends and parents, their achievements and failures and, of
course, their first love affairs. All guys are united by one dream - to
become members of the Youth Hockey League. This kind of sport
will train not just their muscles and skills but it will teach them a
lesson. By all means this drama focuses not on sport activities but
on life of young boys with their problems, fears and joys of life.

Ukrainian production Euromedia Company started working
on Mission “Student” – who wants to study in Ukraine?,
a new educational TV project for Azerbaijanian and Kazakh TV
markets. The show is produced in cooperation with leading
TV channels Khabar (Kazakhstan) and ATB (Azerbaijan). The
shooting will take place in Ukraine at the beginning of November.
New entertainment quiz show will be premiered in the middle
of November 2012. Filming crew already finished castings in
both countries. All contestants aged 16-18 and selected by
their knowledge and quick wit are the most interesting, promising and talented schoolchildren. Each of five episodes shows

As the question was read, the first of the two nominees to hit

Corps of the Bulgarian Army to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan wars, for the liberation of Trakya and Macedonia. Prior to World War I, after an amnesty granted by the Russian authorities in 1914, Nzhdeh returned to the Caucasus to
prepare the formation of the Armenian volunteer units within the
Russian army. Thirty years later Garegin Nzhdeh was arrested
by SMERSH suggesting his support to Nazi Germany if the latter takes a decision to attack Turkey. In 1948 Nzhdeh was found

Russian Channel One acquired TV rights for documentary Unclaimed Baggage: The Unrevealed Story of Marilyn Monroe’s
Lost Wardrobe (Great Britain, 2012) from French company Upside
Distribution. The deal was signed at MIPCOM 2012. The distributor
also sold the film budgeted at €450,000 ($580,000) to ZDF in Germany, ERT in Grece, and YLE in Norway. Upside is in advanced negotiations with U.K., Chinese, Italian and Austrian broadcasters.
The film is focused on Doc centers on a mysterious Louis Vuitton trunk
sent to Monroe and left abandoned in New York for 40 years. Monroeobsessed Japanese pop star Princess Tenko purchased the trunk at
an auction and tapped one of her employees to trace it back to the
sender to find out what happened. The documentary sheds light on
Monroe’s relationships with ex-husband Arthur Miller, the Kennedys,
the Strasbergs and the Vandebilts.

Russian Domashny Channel (belongs to СTC Media) acquired
broadcasting rights for TV drama Saving Hope (Canada, 2012) from
international company Entertainment One (eOne) specialized on
content production and distribution. The series is also sold to DirecTV
in Latin America, Globosat in Brazil, Zon in Portugal, D-Smart in Turkey, La7 in Italy, EUFORIA TV in Romania and Sony SET Channel in
Africa.
In Saving Hope, when charismatic Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris at
Toronto’s Hope-Zion Hospital ends up in a coma, he leaves the hospital in chaos and his fiancée and fellow surgeon, Alex Reid, in a state of
shock. Along with newly-arrived star surgeon, Joel Goran, Alex races
to save Harris life. As the action unfolds, comatose Dr. Harris wanders the halls of Hope-Zee in spirit form, not sure if he’s a ghost or a
figment of his own imagination. Reid, along with her fellow doctors,
press on to save his life and those of their other patients, as they deal
with the complicated and courageous decisions that are made in their
daily struggle to keep hope alive.

for animated series Masha and the Bear (Russia, 2009-2012) produced by Animaccord Animation studio to Norwegian TV channel
NRK Super.
Main characters of the series Masha and the Bear are taken from Russian folk tale. Little girl name Masha visits her friend the Bear who lives
in his house in the forest since he left work in the circus for peaceful
life far from the crowded cities. But Masha is even worse than a crowd
of children. She is hyperactive – she never stops talking and moving.
So the Bear fails to do things he planned because Masha ruins his
plans all the time. And not only plans. On the other hand the Bear’s life
would be boring without his little friend.

as Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Denzel Washington and many other

TV Channel Russia 1 has picked up format The Chase from international distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment. Russian version
of the show will be produced by West Media. The show, which is part
quiz and part race, airs on U.K. commercial channel ITV1 since 2009,
the broadcaster recently commissioned a sixth season. The format
also adapted in Germany by regional channel NRD.
According to the format four contestants a team of four contestants
attempt to amass as much money as possible by answering quick-fire
questions in a 60-second round. The money earned will go towards the
team pot, but there is one person standing in their way: a quiz genius
known as The Chaser. The Chaser’s job is to catch each contestant
and answer the questions before the team. If he manages to do it the
contestants lose and no one gets the money.
SONY PICTURES TELEVISION RUSSIA
Russian branch of Sony Pictures Television acquired from American
distributor Carsey-Werner International Television rights on the
local adaptation of long-running US sitcom The Cosby Show (USA,
1984-1992). The original series aired on NBC in 1984-1992. Sony Pictures Television is going to produced a Russian-language pilot of the
show and then present it to local broadcasters.
The original show focused on the Huxtable family, an affluent African-American family living in Brooklyn, New York. The patriarch was
Heathcliff “Cliff” Huxtable, an obstetrician, son of a prominent jazz
trombonist. The matriarch was his wife, attorney Clair Huxtable née
Hanks. They had four daughters and one son; Sondra, Denise, Theodore (Theo for short), Vanessa and Rudy. Despite its comedic tone,
the show sometimes involved serious subjects, such as son Theo’s
experiences dealing with dyslexia, inspired by Cosby’s son Ennis, who
was also dyslexic. Teenage pregnancy was also a topic when Denise’s
friend, played by Lela Rochon, became pregnant.

Ukrainian TV channel STB acquired from Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN, belongs to American corporation Viacom Inc.)
the refreshed version of animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (USA, 2012) at MIPCOM 2012. The show is supposed to air on
Ukrainian channel QTV that belongs to the group of companies StarLightMedia as well as STB. British broadcaster ITV, was the first to pick
up seasons one and two for simulcast on ITV1 and CiTV, with season
one kicking off in spring 2013. Other presales went to TVI in Portugal;
RTL Klub in Hungary; Bandeirantes in Brazil; ABS-CBN in the Philippines; and Nicaragua’s Televisora Nicaraguaense. This summer Spanish public broadcaster TVE also signed a three-year deal for the series,
starting in May 2013. The updated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiered on Nickelodeon in the US on September 29, followed by the
UK net on October 1. It is now rolling out across Nickelodeon channels
internationally until December 2013. Nickelodeon has already ordered
an additional 26 episodes for airing next year.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set in present day New York City, from
the glittering towers of Manhattan to the dark depths of the sewers,
and follows the adventures of four humanoid turtles and a six-foottall rat, Master Splinter. One day, while living a life in seclusion with his
four pet turtles, the once human, Splinter, encountered a mysterious
green ooze that covered him and his pets. Overcome by the mutagen, he was transformed into a rat and his four pets became humanoid turtles. Fearing persecution from humans, he brought the Turtles
underground and raised them, training them to become ninjas. Years
have passed since that point and the four turtles, Leonardo, Raphael,
Donatello and Michelangelo, are now headstrong teenagers, filled with
the confidence of youth and a burning desire to see the world.
WEIT MEDIA
Russian group of companies WeiT Media, subsidiary of Endemol
(Netherlands), acquired option for local adaptation of the series Prisoner Of War (Hatufim) from Keshet International, distribution branch
of Israeli Keshet Media, at MIP TV in spring 2012. Finally the deal on
the format that was the basis for Homeland (USA, 2011) – Emmy
2012 winner – was completed in September and WeiT Media is set to
produce a local version of the series for an undisclosed broadcaster.
Format: Prisoners of War.

The fictional series Prisoners of War revolves around the lives of three
IDF reservists who are captured during service in Lebanon. Their fate
initially is unknown, and they become symbols to the society from
which they came. In their families, they are perceived as something
between a misty memory, and an ever-lasting glimmer of hope – until
the day 17 years later, when they return. Only two come back alive.
The third returns in a coffin. The series follows the families, and the
two remaining soldiers as they try to pick up the pieces of their lives.
The questions asked as part of the program are troubling, as are the

KIEV MEDIA WEEK - a unique project for media market in the CIS countries and Central and Eastern
Europe - took place on September 11-14 gathering more than thousand of television, movie and media
business experts from all over the world. This year KIEV MEDIA WEEK presented high-level consolidation of four professional conferences, international content market and several special events in order to
achieve synergy, learn about current trends of the international media business and create unified communication platform for media professionals worldwide.
On the 11th of September more than 200 professionals of TV-industry took part in the Format Show - a
one day conference dedicated to TV formats. The conference program included screening of the newest and already the most popular formats by core international prodcos and distributors such as DRG,
FremantleMedia, CBS, Banijay International, BBC Worldwide, Zodiak Rights, Endemol, Red Arrow International, ITV Studios, Armoza Formats, Sony Pictures Television, Global Agency, Russian TV3 and others.
Thanks to Format Show international prodcos and distributors had a great opportunity to get acquainted
with the local broadcasters’ demand for the TV formats and to find out what kind of content they are looking for. All in all this year in course of the conference 80 formats were presented (28 of which - international premiers) that is 20% increase compared to the previous year. Besides the audience of Format
Show 2012 had unique opportunity to listen to Jonathan Coad’s (Partner at the lewissilkin law firm, Media,
Brands and Technology, London, UK) special report - How to Own and Control Your Format – Getting the
Best Return on your Investment.
International audiovisual content market Ukrainian Content Market took place at Radisson Blu Hotel
on September 12-14, 2012. As a result of successful Ukrainian Content Market 2011 the list of 2012 participants has grown twice, involving new players and territories such as CIS countries, Europe, Asia, Africa
and America. According to Victoria Yarmoshchuk, Director of Media Resources Management (KMW
organizer), this raise indicates dynamic content development across the region. The market floors hosted
62 exhibition suites, where sellers presented all kinds of media content – from ready-made feature films
on out to TV formats, shows and series. Among UCM attendants many leading international prodcos and
distributors were presented such as: WeiT Media, FILM.UA, TV Azteca, BBC Worldwide, Endemol Group,
Cineflix Rights, DRG, Global Agency, ITV, Star Media, Telemundo Internacional, Zodiak Rights, Russian
World Studios, СTB Film Company, Central Partnership, main TV channels from CIS region: Russia 1 TV
channel, CTC, TNT Broadcasting Network, TV3, Domashniy TV Channel, TV Center, Television Company STREAM, Sony Pictures Television Russia – from Russia; Ukrainian TV channels like Inter, 1+1, TRK
Ukraine, New Channel, STB, ICTV, TET, Tonis and others; Kazakh KTK, 31 Channel, Channel Seven, NTK,

The sellers working at the UCM without exhibition suites (68 companies) and buyers (above 130 companies) had a great opportunity to negotiate and tie up beneficial contacts in Participants Club, besides
for that purposes a Meeting Coordination Center was at participants’ service as well. Many of leading
media experts visited KIEV MEDIA WEEK forum and Ukrainian Content Market for the first time and were
pleasantly surprised by the high level, quality and wide variety of products. For example Helge Koehnen
(Global Screen, Germany) expressed a strong interest in conference program promising to come back
next year.
Avi Armoza, CEO of Armoza Formats (Israel), comments that the majority of distributors had come to this
media event in order to sale their slate of formats. Annually Ukrainian Content Market starts about 3 weeks
before other important international content market that allows companies to test their products and realize what consumers are looking for and what they need.
The Fifth International Сonference Film Business: challenges, features, opportunities was held on
September 12, and brought together representatives of more than 65 leading companies from Ukraine,
Russia, CIS, European countries and USA (generally over 160 film industry professionals). This year the
conference was presented in its updated variant, with its main concept conversion - from extensive discussions to practice: the experts shared their experience based on real-life projects. The dominant feature in
this year’s conference was coproduction with all its aspects. The program included two panel discussions:
Co-production as a profitable venture - reality or fiction? and State film support: reality or fiction?, as well
as special session Distribution, marketing, profit maximization of the full-length movies. The conference’s
content has excited a huge interest among the participants, considering that before in Ukraine film coproduction issues have never been studied so deeply on a professional level.
Rick McCallum, Producer (USA) states that it is absolutely imperative for independent producers to have
the opportunity to meet with potential partners from all over Europe. KIEV MEDIA WEEK helps all produ

cers bridge the gap between Western, Central and Eastern Europe. Besides he points out his intention to
shoot in Ukraine a high-budget adventure drama set during the WWII.
On the 13th of September the conference Television as Business 2012 was attended by more than
200 representatives of TV-channels, advertising agencies, advertisers, media experts and investors.
Among the participants were representatives of companies from Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, UK, France, Belgium and USA. 32 Ukrainian and foreign media experts made reports and took
part in panel discussions. The program was divided into 4 thematic sections. A panel discussion Media
leaders’ summit gathered professionals of the largest TV-groups, including Ekaterina Lapshyna, Media
Group Ukraine holding, Yaroslav Porokhnyak, Inter Media Group and Alexander Bogutsky, StarLightMedia
group. The conference Television as Business also comprised a panel discussion Sponsorship 360° – new
era of cross-platform media sponsorship project, initiated by Starlight Media Group (Ukraine).
Fourth international forum Digital broadcasting in Ukraine took place on the 14th of September. This
event is the key place to study in detail all questions about DTV implementation in Ukraine, its prospects
and problems professionally. This autumn forum’s participants summed up the last year results concerning DTV implementation, made reports, discussed this process and compared Ukraine’s plans and
achievements to international practice and experience. COO of the technology department at The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) David Wood from Switzerland was appointed as a host speaker of the
conference.
Simultaneously with the conferences and content market a range of special events were held in course of
KIEV MEDIA WEEK 2012:
September 14 opened the special event International Emmy Awards 2012 Judging Semi-Final in
the category TV movie/mini-series. Two applicants selected in Kiev have already proceeded to the final
round of judging. The Final-winners will be awarded in New York at the 40th International Emmy Awards
which is set on the 7th of November 2012.
Also in course of the Format Show 2012 the Final of Ideas Pitching contest took place. This event is
a unique project initiated by the group 1+1 Media. It consisted of the presentation of innovative original
entertaining TV projects by independent authors. The total amount of applications for the main competition reached 190 contestants. But only 80 of them were presented to jury who selected just 5 projects.
Finally the jury including the leading experts from Ukraine, Russia and Israel, namely Viktoria Shulzhenko,
Producer General 1+1 TV channel, Ukrainian TV producers Elena Eremeeva and Viktoriya Lezina, Director General of Israeli company Armoza Formats Avi Armoza, Alla Lipovetskaya, executive producer of
the company Story First Production, owned by СТС Media (Russia), awarded Vladimir Moskalec project
“Family or Heart Knows No Law”. TV channel 1+1 will make the pilot version of the show and Vladimir
Moskalec got an opportunity to attend a workshop in storytelling by famous scriptwriter Robert McKee.
More over this year KIEV MEDIA WEEK became a partner of the 10th international conference on Computer Graphics CG EVENT EURO 2012 which was held on the 8th of September, 2012. CG EVENT EURO
2012 was specially devoted to computer graphics and multimedia, image and video processing, including
animation, computer games, cinema SPFX, architectural rendering, physics simulation, realistic rendering, etc. Traditionally the event is held in Moscow but this year due to the 10th anniversary of the conference it was carried out in Kiev. Sergey Cypcyn, the organizer and the head of CG Event noted that Ukrainian film industry and advertising sector have developed and raised the local postproduction market to
European level that’s why the organizers closed a partnership agreement with KIEV MEDIA WEEK to hold
the conference exactly in the capital of Ukraine.
Therefore the growth of Ukrainian Content Market to the second floor of Radisson Blu hotel, 100% expansion of KMW participants’ number as well as their geographical variety – all these changes are eloquent of
local media market fast development and KIEV MEDIA WEEK’s relevance.

Last month CG Event EURO 2012 international conference on computer graphics (CG) and visual effects
(VFX) took place in Kiev. Some of the reports on the main topic of the conference were presented by
the specialists of one of the Russia’s largest and most recognizable post-production houses CG Factory (CGF, created visual effects for Chronicle (2012), Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), Wanted
(2008), etc.) that was the general partner of the event. According to Alexander Gorokhov, the founder and
the head of CGF, one of the main reasons for his company to support the organizers was to announce the
launch of its Ukrainian branch – CGF Kiev. In an exclusive interview to Content Report Alexander Gorokhov
told about the aim of foundation of the local office as well as the reorganization of the whole company and
the state of the industry in CIS countries.
What was the reason of founding a CGF office in Ukraine? Describe the process, please?
In 2011 CGF was engaged in work on Marius Weiberg’s project Rzhevsky vs Napoleon. Producers’ funds
were not enough to put out a tender for postproduction services and they were not sure about those companies announced reasonable prices for their work. So I offered to divide the total amount of work into two
offices. Postproduction services are much cheaper in Kiev. The budget was sufficient for CGF to make
some important key elements in Moscow and charge Kiev CG studios CG.UA and mental dRive studio with
the rest of the work. So we did. And for the first time Ukrainian companies were mentioned in the captions
of Rzhevsky vs Napoleon as CGF Kiev.
We continued cooperation under the same brand working on the movie Yolki 2. So by the end of 2011 we
made decision to found Ukrainian CGF subsidiary. It happened naturally as a result of successful cooperation without forced takeover and submission.
We thought that wouldn’t be a problem to add letter “F” to the name of Alexander Kucherov’s CG.UA.
Then taking into account the fact that CGF’s offices are named after the cities where they are situated –
CGF Moscow, CGF Vladivostok and CGF LA – it was decided to give the Ukrainian branch name CGF Kiev.
Through the Kiev office we are going to cooperate with local CG and VFX specialists.

Initially we planned to settle all the organizational issues concerning CGF Kiev by the end of February 2012
but we had to postpone them due to the start of the process of reorganization of the whole company’s
structure. Since CGF successfully accomplished work on the three Hollywood projects in a row – Apollo
18 (2011), Chronicle (2012) and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) – there appeared an opportunity to get more orders from the prodcos in the USA. That meant we would face more difficult tasks. To be
ready for them we decided to reorganize the company according to American – already used worldwide
– standards of providing postproduction services. We started the process but there is still much work to be
done. At the same time CGF Kiev is engaged in the project Gentlemen of Fortune (Dzhentlmeny udachi) of
Timur Bekmambetov’s company Bazelevs. Dare I say it, this movie will be a debut for the CGF’s Ukrainian
branch on Russian market because the guys are accomplishing all the tasks and organizing the business
process themselves. All we do is help in some issues and share our experience. And they are doing well.
Does reorganization mean that you have to improve the production technology?
Technological improvements concern three offices – in Moscow, Los Angeles and Vladivostok. The pipeline will be unified. Shotgun software is to be used to managing projects. In our case it’s impossible to
designate working and processing software because we have to consider people working with us and their
preferences above all. We just haven’t got so many specialists to dictate our terms to them and tell what
programs to use. On the other hand more and more people understand that it’s better to be a high class
expert in profiling activity.
Companies’ pipeline is configured on the creation of visual effects for the movies. So we don’t make so
many commercials as we did before. Still, the commercials production is the main source of income for
many Russian and Ukrainian studios. In 2012 the total number of commercials made by CGF is six. Chances are high that we’ll launch a separate commercials department to maintain our position in this market.
The pipeline of CGF Kiev will stay the same at least until the guys finish working on Gentlemen of Fortune.
Moreover, they are engaged in the new Russian project Sherlock Holmes directed by Andrey Kavun. This
project is a first class TV series so the producers pay much attention to CG elements. At the same time
CGF capacity is employed for cooperation with the US studios but I have no right to name the projects we
work on.

And when did CGF launch its office in Los Angeles? Why was it founded before the one in Kiev?
It’s a regular practice to launch so called sales points first. We were interested in selling our services to
Hollywood, that’s why we endeavored to found our office in the USA. Initially it was planned to settle it in
Vancouver – it seemed to be easier than in the capital of the world film industry. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire
Hunter directed by Timur Bekmambetov was supposed to be the debut of CGF’s US subsidiary. But CGF
LA was launched even earlier than we anticipated. At that time we were working on Chronicle. It happened
due to the support of Fox film studio. Taking into account previous experience of cooperation with Russian
companies (Wanted (2008)) it set us strict requirements for the services provided.
More recently Russian companies are indentified by their names in the USA but not so long ago the common definition was used – “Russians”. And it didn’t mean anything good. At the same time Americans are
apprehensive of us. VFX production is the only industry in CIS countries – Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan,
Belarus – that developed on local rules irrespective of the USA. American postproduction companies
didn’t launch their offices here. They didn’t teach us what and how to do. Other countries invited the US
experts or they came there themselves and shared their experience. That’s why the whole world works by
their template. As a matter of fact we are constrained to use the same template to meet the world standards. At the same time it only concerns the technological issues.
Our aim now is to implement the infrastructure that will allow CGF to make a large-scale project like The
Lord of the Rings.
Sergey Nevshupov, the head of CGF Vladivostok, took part in creating CG and VFX for The Lord
of the Rings.
Sergey worked for Weta Digital (New Zealand, created CG and VFX for The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, King
Kong, etc.) for nine years. His experience was taken as a basis for reorganization of CGF. He came to
our company because he saw the potential and understood that together we can reach the same level
as Weta. Sergey started to cooperate with CGF when the last was working on Chronicle. He did four very
difficult shots. Our office in Vladivostok was founded at the same time – a somewhat earlier than CGF LA.
You are one of the teachers of the Scream School educational center, would you, please, tell how
CG specialists are taught and trained in Russia?
I don’t teach at the Scream School. I supervise the activity of Stereo Lab – a laboratory exploring technologies and techniques of working with 3D image. Still, we just managed to realize small projects within
general educational programs. The resources are just not enough for large-scale researches. Now I understand that we chose the wrong direction for the research from the very beginning. First of all we need
the demand for it. No demand – no results.
Back to the question of education I’m sure that existing schools don’t meet the industry needs for specialists. There should be at least ten schools like Scream School and Real Time that would compete to each
other. Another problem is the lack of professional teachers of the basic knowledge in CG and VFX production. There are such professionals in the USA where the industry exits for already 25 years. In Russia there
are so few people working in this sphere that almost all of them are engaged in educational and training
process in their spare time. In fact they just share their experience.
What special qualities do you value when hiring a person?
As a matter of fact I welcome everyone having talent, style and willingness to work. In CGF we use Local
University training system. In the USA Local University means that an employee having basic knowledge
studies the peculiarities of work in the company during tree-week probation period. In our case the basis
is given during the probation that may last for two or three months. Sometimes it takes a month to come
to a conclusion if the person is worth the time spent for training.
Does CGF conduct own research and develop its software? Are there any special research and
development departments in the company’s structure?
We often use our own software depending on the challenges we face. Yet we haven’t came across such
difficult task that there would be a need to create a separate research department that would focus on ex-

ploring some specific issue. Russian projects can’t afford it. For example, Russian producers may ask me
to make the ocean like they saw it in The Perfect Storm (2000). And I have to explain them that a group of
100 programmers described the behavior of physical phenomenon during a year. Then the results of their
work were set into the interface of the program that created such a storming ocean. And the funds spent
for the researches are equal to the whole budget of Russian project.
CGF closely cooperates with Timur Bekmambetov who invested heavily in the FilmLanguage
(Kinoyazyk) technology. Do you take part in the researches of his company Bazelevs?
We do cooperate with Bazelevs in some researches. But this cooperation is rather sketchy. Actually we do
not delve into the study. As for the FilmLanguage I know that Bazelevs have some results that are different
from the declared objectives but still…
There is information in the Web that you are going to launch your own projects as a producer. Is
that true?
I have some ideas. I have knowledge and skills that would be sufficient to launch a project. And the company is strong enough to realize it. We just need to try and move on if it works.
In the nearest future we’ll decide on the range of projects that would be interesting to work on. At the same
time we are going to separate company’s activity as a producer from providing postproduction services
which is our core business. Most likely postproduction department will accomplish orders for our projects
otherwise there will be a risk of failing in both areas.
