Your Hat Size and Selection
Measure the distance around your head at the position where your hat normally
rests, using a soft tape measure. This is usually done above the ears and across the
forehead. Do not take this measurement yourself. Be seated to view yourself in
a mirror while someone else measures your head. Have them pull the tape tightly
around your head, then loosely, tightly and loosely again, until you can determine
from the comfort of the tape how you would like your hat to fit. Your head may be
between sizes. Measurement can be taken in increments of 1/16”. We will make
your hat to the exact measurement.
You can check your head size by comparing your measurement to the
corresponding hat size on the chart below. Again, you may be between hat sizes.
We will make your hat to the exact measurement. Rand’s will gladly make minor
size adjustments at no charge, but if your measurement is off by more than 1/4”,
there will be a resize charge. Call us if you need help.

Crease in crown of hat should correspond with
the shape of your face. Longer faces should
wear taller creases, or vice versa.
Your nose knows! Narrow or pinched creases
coordinate with slender noses. Wider creases
coordinate with broader noses.
Brim size corresponds with shoulder width or
body size or leg length.
Always view yourself in a full length mirror when
determining the right hat. The hat should become a part of you … not apart from you.
Consider hat color or accessory color to compliment your eye or hair color. Choose hat color to compliment skin, not
to drain color from your face. We offer many color choices to enhance appearance, not detract from it.
Sometimes coordinate a hat with your clothes to make a statement. Matching hat, belt & boots are a nice touch.

The Cowboy Hat Book
Boss of the Plains, originally made by John B. Stetson Company and sold by Shargin and Adraddio of San Jose, California, in
the 1890’s, was popular with the cowboys of the Great Plains. The narrow brim and lower crown kept it in place during windstorms
without the need of a chin strap. Leather hatbands were decorative as well as useful in helping maintain fit. The band could be
adjusted by “cinching it up” after worn in a heavy rain and “letting out the cinch” if left in the hot sun. Historical reproduction as
shown and described to the right:
Pictured: This pair of hombres both sport one of the most
often-worn styles of headgear in the Old West: the flatbrimmed, straight-sided crown with rounded corners.
This popular hat was known as the “Boss of the Plains”
style and was sold by just about every hatter throughout
the U.S.

Shown and described below: This type of hat is often
seen in C.M. Russell paintings as well as another hat
worn by the infamous artist: the Charlie Russell hat, an
exact replica of Russell’s own hat, is housed at the Charlie
Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana. The museum
officially approved Rand’s design as the only commemorative Charlie Russell Hat. In honor of Montana’s 100th
Birthday, Rand’s presented this very special hat, designed
originally by one of its favorite sons, C.M. Russell.

The Cowboy Hat Book II

, takes another look at America’s own ingenious and indigenous icon.
Few clothing items in history have elevated as simple a task as keeping one’s head out of the elements to the level of iconic status as achieved by the cowboy hat. Proof

About the Authors
Ritch Rand
Ritch Rand has owned and operated Rand’s Custom Hats from his shop in Billings,
Montana for over thirty-five years. Master hatter, milliner and designer, Ritch
Rand’s hats are worn worldwide by those who respect quality and authenticity. His
handcrafted hats have graced heads of state and Hollywood’s elite as well as working
& weekend cowboys, hunters, sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts. His experience
is second to no one in the headwear arena and his credibility and authorship in this
revised edition will captivate readers. Living in the West has taught Ritch to look
beyond the moment creating a maker/client environment that beckons their return.

Bill Reynolds
Long time western journalist Bill Reynolds has written in and on the Western Lifestyle
Industry for over twenty-five years. He is the Associate Publisher of Cowboys &
Indians magazine and along with co-authoring “The Cowboy Hat Book”, he has
penned a number of other best selling titles. Reynolds co-wrote the soon-to-be-amajor-motion-picture, “The Faraway Horses” and “Believe, A Horseman’s Journey”
both with Montana clinician Buck Brannaman. In 2004, Reynolds released “The Art
of the Western Saddle,” winner of the 2004 Best Equine Book from the American
Horse Publications. His next book is a look into the life of artist Joe De Yong, the
only protégé of Montana’s own Charles M. Russell.

hats worn back in the “good old days”, and can provide you with a style that is
as authentic as the rest of your attire. If it’s a wide brim gunfighter style or a
banker’s derby, your custom hat truly tops off like nothing else. Movies have
revived two of the more popular Tom Horn and Gus styles with many others
following closely behind.
Distressing creates a really sensational look on most of these styles. Rand’s is
an innovator in the distressing process. We use special chemicals to age and
weather the look of a new hat without losing its strength or durability and makes
the hat twice as water repellent. We also distress your hatbands, windstrings
and other accessories to match. We can distress your existing hat. This “long
time on the trail” look is terrific. Remember………………every hat tells a
story, distressing adds another chapter!

In the early west, one of the cowboy’s most important pieces of equipment was his hat.
It shaded his eyes from the sun, kept the rain off his neck and, in a pinch, served as a bucket
for water and feed. It was an integral part of his existence, and he was seldom without it. It
was the first thing he put on in the morning, and the last thing he took off at night. Today’s
cowboy; and those who fancy western apparel, expect no less from their hat than the cowboy
in the old west. It reflects their taste and lifestyle. In this age of cheap workmanship, it is
difficult to find the hat to fit these needs. It’s with that thought that Rand’s approach the
design and construction of their custom hats. Utilizing traditional artisan’s tools and skilled
craftsmen, we have achieved a quality product that combines the skills of the past with the
concerns of today. Antique copper steamers, wooden sizing blocks, curved pencil curling irons
