PARAMOUNT THEATRE…AURORA, IL
This is the show that set the standard for all future musicals
by incorporating music, lyrics and dance into a well-crafted
serious story. It’s also the debut collaboration of one of the most
prolific writing teams in American theater history – Rodgers
and Hammerstein. Set in the turn of the century Oklahoma
Territory, tensions are mounting between the local farmers and
cowboys over the use of land. In the midst of it all is the rugged
cowboy Curly who’s fallen for the strong-headed farm girl,
Laurey. Nominated for 7 Tony Awards and winner of a Pulitzer
Prize, this is the show that sets the standard for the Paramount
Broadway Season. It’s filled with some of the most recognized
songs in theater including “Beautiful Morning,” “Surrey with
the Fringe,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and of course, the
resounding “Ok-la-hom-a,” – all performed by the Paramount’s
full-orchestra. Time to eat before performance. Cancel: Aug

This month’s general membership meeting will be on Monday,
July 6 at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. If you’ve enjoy our socials,
like ‘Neil Diamond’ and ‘The History of Underwear,’ then come
on out to hear about upcoming events. Judy really has some fun
entertainment planned for the rest of this year.
Our social this month will be on Friday, July 31, and will
feature singer Heather Braoudakis, an acclaimed Chicago-area
entertainer. She has performed at many area venues, with a rich
variety of styles -- opera, musical theater, classical, and pop.
For us, Heather will present a program of American Bandstand
favorites. Doors will open promptly at 5:00 PM, dinner served
at 5:30, and the entertainment begins at 7:00.
The meal for this evening will include fried chicken, potato salad,
coleslaw, and all the fixin’s. As always, wine and soft drinks,
coffee and dessert are included.
Tickets for this social are $15.00 and will be on sale at the July
6 meeting. If you are unable to attend, you can also call Carol
Thorelius (815 293 2347) or Dianne Donofrio (815 293 0278)
to get your tickets.
In order to accomodate members who use canes and walkers,
they may come to the side door at 4:45 to get an early seat and
not have to wait in the lobby.
This is also a gentle reminder that dues for 2015 should be paid
by now. If you haven’t yet paid your $15.00 dues, please see
Diane Kalec in the lobby before any meeting or social. Nonmembers may attend only two socials per year.
Our Activities Committee meets on Tuesday, July 28 at 4:00
PM in the Crafts Room. All members are welcome at this
meeting. Come and find out how you can help out at a meeting
or social, or share your ideas for future activities.

CARILLON CHORUS TRAVELS
Your “Traveling Troubadours” have not been just sitting around
humming but instead traveled to Joliet in October to entertain
the folks at Provena Villa Franciscan. The Chorus performed
several numbers from Broadway including medleys of songs
from The King and I and Lullaby of Broadway. The gentlemen
of the Chorus thoroughly excited the residents with “There Is
Nothing Like A Dame” from South Pacific. Of course we
ended our show by singing old –time favorites while walking
around and sharing a handshake or hug with our audience.
The smiling faces were our greatest reward!
Our next trip took us to the Diplomat West banquet hall to
entertain the Retired Military Officers of America Club,
including one officer, Aaron Wolff, who lives here in Carillon.
Our musical selections included some patriotic offerings,
Broadway show tunes and a special solo by Cindy Kolick;
“Everything’s Coming Up Roses”. Our audience especially
enjoyed “Here’s To The Heroes”!
Our most recent venture was quite local: St. Mary Immaculate
Church in Plainfield where, accompanied by the Mary G.
Dancers, we performed a Christmas show for the senior club.
Much to our delight, refreshments followed our program!!
We won’t have to travel at all for our next production, the
Christmas Social on December 16, 2015! All of Carillon is
invited!!!! No tickets necessary!!

LUNG CANCER
Despite heavy rain walkers
still managed to participate
in the Carillon Lung Force
walk for lung cancer. Carillon
Activities held a lung
cancer walk to benefit Lung
Force a part of American
Lung Association. Miriam
Vecchiet, Chairperson of
Carillon Activities said after she and other activities members
attended a Lung Force Walk in 2015 and they learned lung
cancer surpassed breast cancer and became the leading cause of
cancer death in women. She said many people in the Carillon
community suffer from asthma, emphysema and COPD and she
felt she should help raise money for the cause. The attendance
was not as hoped due to heavy rain, but thanks to dedicated
volunteers Carillon Activities managed to raise a little under
$4000 from walk registration, lunch ticket sales, and raffle
tickets sold to win gift certificates and themed baskets donated
by local business.

Words to Move You
America’s 83,000 missing in action include more than73,000
from WWII, 7,800 from Korea, 1640 from the Vietnam War, 126
from the Cold War and seven post-Cold War. Contact your U.S.
Senators and Representatives to remind them to keep the
pressure on the Department of Defense until we account for
every missing American.
Carillon VFW Post 12059 was asked to Present the Colors on May 7 at
the special ceremony in Plainfield for The National Day of Prayer. All
of the churches in Plainfield took part in the ceremony and the short
talks by the clergy were very interesting.
Carillon VFW Post 12059 took part in the pre and post Memorial
Day program at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. On the Friday
before Memorial Day we placed flags on the graves of those buried
there and then removed them on the following Tuesday. It was a nice
way to spend part of the day in service to the National Cemetery.
Carillon VFW Post 12059 made its monthly trip to Manteno Veterans
Home this past month with the generous donations from the Carillon
Community. As always the residents were excited to see what we
brought for their use. The residents are always happy to see us when
we come and we stay around for a couple of hours and spend some
quality time with them.
Carillon VFW Post 12059 held its’ Poppy Day on May 31 at the Wal
Mart in Plainfield at 127th and Rt. 59. It was a cool day with a lot
of wind but the generosity of the community was ever present. The
members entertained the children and the parents appreciated the
attention to the kids. We had another successful day at our fund raiser
and will use the money on needy veterans.

If you use the Message Board feature on our website (and you
Subscribe to the CAMA Notes), you will receive email notices from
the office when the regular schedule is interrupted at the clubhouse.
For instance, subscribers were notified through the Message Board
that the usual activities would be curtailed on June 2 because
CAMA needed to set up for the Health Fair on June 3.
You do not need to login in order to get these messages. Just
click Subscribe on the CAMA Notes category (upper right side of
the category). Future messages from the CAMA office will then
appear in your email inbox automatically. This saves a lot of logging
in.
Start using the website today! You, too, can be informed!!
If you need help with login simply set up an appointment with
Marketing Committee volunteers, Adrienne Kuehner, 815-3729699 (May through October), or Jeanette Grays, 312-504-1636.
You have no computer? No problem. There is a computer at the
clubhouse for your use. Don’t delay! Make an appointment.
Residents were also offered assistance at the WEB ED event in
May. Two more WEB ED events have been scheduled. Be sure to
come to the next sessions scheduled on July 30 (a repeat of the May
session) and August 27 (new topics).
Newcomers Gathering, May 31.
During the recent Newcomers Gathering our experts were
able to assist several new website users by answering questions and
helping to obtain login passwords.
The Newcomers Committee would like to thank Bernadine
from the CAMA office for faithfully attending the gatherings. It is
so helpful to have her input and knowledge available for the newest
residents.
Ambassador Tour Program
Our volunteer Ambassadors were busy during the month of May.
They lead six tours and all these “tourists” were really impressed
with Carillon’s beauty, facilities and activities. Sheila and George
Peebles do an excellent job at the head of this program.
Home for Sale
Carillon brochures are available for those selling a home in
Carillon. You may want to leave them out for prospective buyers
to take with them. The brochure will help the visitor understand
what is offered here; and it may help remind them of YOUR home.
If you are interested in obtaining brochures just call Rita Dubbs,
(815) 886-0115. You may also want to offer some back issues of
The Talk of the Town. To request those call the CAMA office.

FRI NIGHTS AT CARILLON
Theater Guild
We’re breaking out the sparklers for the glorious Fourth!
And we’ll save more than a handful for our grand Carillon
audiences who attended our recent play, Done to Death.
As always, they laughed and clapped, supporting us in the
enthusiastic way we so much appreciate. Thank you to
every one of you. You’re the reason we find performing here
so rewarding!
Those of you, cast and crew, who have worked in our shows
this year, the one acts directed by Kathleen Stevens and
Vicki McIntosh, the Mardi Gras show, and Done to Death,
are asked to attend out Annual Meeting on Thursday, July

Now, some of you out there might want to be one of our

be allowed to shine. Well, we do want newcomers, and that
means you! Come out, shine on!
Since it’s the grand Fourth season, don’t forget Carillon’s
perennial favorite, the “Honor America” breakfast,
featuring our terrific Chorus, led by the redoubtable Faylene
McDowell and the so talented Laverne Budilovsky. It’s a
Roman candle of an event!

CARILLON ACTIVITIES ANNUAL
If you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or a related
Dementia, you are invited to join our support group. Here
in a friendly supportive environment you can participate in
discussions geared toward the needs and interests of individuals
who are caregivers, family members, or friends of someone with
dementias. It is a chance to learn more about dementias and
what to expect along the way.
Those with the dementia are also welcome if they are able to sit
in the discussions and benefit from the group. They do not have
to enter the discussions if they are not comfortable or able to do
so.
Our support group is an opportunity to learn from and share
with others who are experiencing the same situations in their
interactions with someone with dementia. A support group helps
individuals understand that they are not alone in their situation
and that others do understand and can often offer suggestions
that may help. And it is comforting to know someone will listen
and understand.
For more information please call the facilitator ARLENE

Crafty Crafters
My secret desire in life was to be a Hooker….So I finally
learned to crochet and knit. If this has been your secret wish,
come join the rest of us “hookers” at Crafty Crafters.
Crafty Crafters is a group of knitters and crocheters who get
together every Wednesday in Club Room 2 from 12:30 to 3:00
p.m. We knit or crochet items that are then donated to nursing
homes, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, humane societies,
veterans, hospitals and any other organizations that are in need.
We also prepare items for the Carillon Craft Show in October.
Don’t know how to crochet or knit or maybe just a little rusty
with your skills? We have people who will help you. We supply
you with the yarn. If you like to socialize and talk while serving
your community, this is the place for you.
May was a busy month for our ladies. In support of the Women’s
Club Baby Shower, we provided 19 baby blankets, 10 baby
sweaters, 11 baby hats, 3 bibs, 2 pairs of booties and 3 hat and
sweater sets. Knitting or crocheting baby items is so much fun
and it felt good to help out a fellow Carillon organization. 2
lap robes and 24 baby hats went to Presence St. Joseph. And 2
prayer shawl was delivered to a widow in Carillon.
The following people were generous in yarn donations: Jan
Runhel, Naperville; Doolores Arnold, Cambridge; Marion
Wolff, Darlington, Norma Reed, Canterbury East and Jeannie
Warren, Andover. All donations are greatly appreciated.

The second Tuesday of the month finds the needleworkers

In the Midst of Grief
The journey of grief after loss is one of life’s most difficult
experiences, but we don’t have to walk alone. If you are grieving
the death of a loved one, please consider joining Carillon’s
bimonthly support group for bereaved adults and discover
the healing process within a safe, supportive and confidential
environment. The group will provide time to share stories,
process emotions, learn new coping skills and self-care practices.
The sessions are facilitated by Heartland Hospice Bereavement
Counselor and Carillon resident, Kathy Jarman.
We meet the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month from 10:00 AM
– 11:30 AM in the Craft Ceramic Room. Pre-registration is not
required, but if you have questions, please call Kathy Jarman at
630-335-5658.

We want to wish all of you a Very Happy 4th of July. Although
the document was signed in a special session of congress on the
2nd of July it was not approved until the 4th, therefore we have
always celebrated it on the 4th of July. I wonder what some
of your favorite memories are of the 4th of July. One of mine
was watching “Yankee Doodle Dandy” with James Cagney. He
played George M. Cohan wrote the song “OVER THERE” for
the troops in WWII. Please send me some and I will share them
in the coming months.
We would like to Thank Jerry Gralla and Jack Farnan for all the
hard work and effort they put in to have our streets redone by
Murphy’s. Too bad Mother Nature wasn’t as cooperative as they
12
were, but the Board does want to apologize and by the time you
read this our streets will look good. Murphy’s is planning on
coming out and redoing the areas that were messed up.
Exciting news from Jan and Roger Philpott. Their Grandson Kyle
Domark, aka “The Little Redhead” has graduated from Yorkville
High School where he has received a Basketball Scholarship. He
will be attending Lakeland College in Wisconsin in the fall.
Congratulations Kyle from all your grandparents’ friends in
Ashford.
NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Please take note of the dead
trees on your property due to the Ash Boar Problem. These trees
will get weaker as time goes on and could become a dangerous
problem. As you evaluate these trees, please remember it is your
responsibility if something happens and they fall on your house
or an individual.
July Birthdays: Catherine Thomas, July 8th, Alice Brain
July 9th, Helen Moran, July 14th, Phyllis Adelmann July 15th,
Michael Moran, July 19th, Jeanne Zabelny July 23rd, Richard
Thomas July 27th and Virginia Rossi July 28th. We hope each
of you have a very Happy and Blessed day.
The Ashford Ladies breakfast will be on July 24th at the Honey
Jam. It starts at 10:00 am and we need to call Carol Walsh, 3721474 or Sharon Postil, 372-2109 for reservations and if you are
in need of a ride.
On behalf of all of you I would like to say Thank you to our
Board and Sharon Ash for all the hard work they due. Sharon
always makes sure we have a copy of the minutes from our
meeting in the TOTT.
Bill and Linda Sikora would like to “Thank You” for your
thoughtfulness and prayers for Linda’s mother, Sylvia Guimond,
who passed away on April 23rd. They were greatly appreciated.
Well, I guess that is all for this month. Please let me know if you
have been somewhere fun with your family or friends and also
send me your Anniversaries so I can include them in the TOTT.
My email is [email protected].

In appreciation for the new carpeting installed, we encourage
all residents to take the extra steps necessary on retaining the
cleanliness and newness by not tracking mud and slush by
properly wiping our shoes before entering the halls and stairs.
We all could prevent premature replacement expenditures by
this practice.

this welcoming for many years.
“ODE TO GETTING OLD”
Just a line to say I’m living, That I’m not among the dead,
though I’m getting more forgetful and something’s slipping in
my head; I got used to arthritis, To my dentures I’m resigned.
I can manage my bifocals, But oh, how much I miss my mind.
For sometimes I cannot remember when I stand atop the stairs,
if I must go down for something or if I’ve just come up from
there. And before the fridge, so often my mind is filled with
nagging doubt, have I just put food away, or have I come to take
some out. I called a friend not long ago, when they answered
I just moaned. I hung up quickly without speaking, for I’d
forgotten who I’d phoned. And when the darkness falls upon me
I stand alone and scratch my head. I don’t know if I’m retiring,
or just getting out of bed? Once I stood in my own bathroom,
wondering if I’d used the pot. I flushed it just in case I had and
sat down just in case I’d not. So, now if it’s my turn to write
you. There’s no need for getting sore It may be that I think I’ve
written and don’t need to write no more. Now I stand beside the
mail box with a face so very red Instead of mailing you the letter
I have opened it instead.

BERKSHIRE
It’s time to celebrate our country’s independence, July 4th.
Let’s all try to display our flag for this very important day!
HAPPY 4TH!
AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Lorraine Broderick
sure has been doing a lot of traveling this past Spring: Arizona
in March, and Georgia & Florida in April visiting family in
Atlanta and former good friends in the Tampa area.
Connie Hamot had a VERY busy June. Five of her grandsons
graduated: Tim from college, Peter from high school, Michael
from grade school & Tristan from kindergarten. Looks like
Connie will be going to graduations for some time to come.
Grandma is very proud.
Pat Tessler’s youngest grandchild graduated from York High
School. She said the next to graduate will be her great grandson,
7 years old.
Jack Stopler is at Marion Joy and can always use some cheer.
Send cards to his home with your well wishes.
PLEASE REMEMBER our neighbors who are having health
problems or can’t get out easily. Telephone calls & cards mean a
lot! (I know how much they are appreciated. Pat)
THANK YOU: Pat Tessler thanks everyone for all the cards
and phone calls during her 2 back surgeries and ongoing
recuperation. Your kind thoughts really mean so much. She
says the healing is slower than she hoped but is improving every
day.
June was a very busy month for Berkshire, but due to article
deadlines, there will be more about our fun in next month’s
article.
HAPPY JULY BIRTHDAY: Carol Check – 1, Margaret Tuisl
– 1, Elsie Kabza – 5, Jack Finan – 10, Tony Bannon – 17,
Marsha Dugan – 18, Dorothy Lake – 18, Dave Genadenhof
– 22, Dick Kleffman – 28
Keep sending me your news! We love hearing about what is
happening in your life. Our article is only as good as the news
you send me. (Articles must get to me by the 4th of each month.)

Cambridge
Cambridge has a few transitions to mention. Bob Wolf of Red
Cedar lane, an original Cambridge resident, passed away in
April, and we express our sympathy to his family and friends.
Thomas and Diane Buckner have become Cambridge residents,
and so have Bea and Harold Larson … welcome! Please, if I
have missed any new neighbors, or residents who have moved
away or died, accept my apologies. We had a changeover on the
Public Relations committee due to the death of Dick Wood, and
some of you might have been “lost” in the switch. Please contact
me (info at the end of the article) so I can include updates in the
August newsletter.
CAMA is planning to have the clubhouse parking lot reconfigured
to ease congestion from bus traffic, and then repaved. Overall
estimates were received, but in July, the board will consider
itemized estimates to allow more control over what gets done
when.
An OK has been given to purchase and place new plantings at
the two Silktree entrances to Cambridge. Diane Weniger, who
has overseen these installations and their upkeep for many, many
years, needs a break from these duties. Someone (or two?) needs
to step into her garden shoes by Fall! If you’d like to contribute
a lot to our community with a fairly small amount of effort,
please call Diane soon at 815-886-3759.
More “news” from 1990: the Hubble telescope was launched
into orbit, the first web page was written(!), Windows released
version 3.0 and the first car navigation system was sold (who
was the manufacturer?). BTW, John Major succeeded Margaret
Thatcher as Prime Minister of the UK. Next month I’ll share
more items from the www.thepeoplehistory.com website,
including TV, music and movie hits and flops from 1990.
This year’s Cambridge board meeting schedules continue to be
the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 1:30 pm in the clubhouse.
The general HOA meetings are scheduled for the 1st Wednesday
of even numbered months at 7 pm in the clubhouse theater;
mark your calendar for August 5.
Please contact me with info for the next Talk of the Town by
Monday, July 6. Thanks!

About 6 miles from Maastricht in the Netherlands, lie buried 8,301
American Soldiers who died in “”Operation Market Garden” in the
battles to liberate Holland in the fall and winter of 1944. Everyone
of the men buried in the cemetery has been adopted by a Dutch
family who mind and decorate the graves. It is even a custom to
keep a portrait of “their” American Soldier in a place of honor in
their home to keep their memory alive. Annually on “Liberation
Day” May 5th memorial services are held for “the men who died
to liberate Holland.” This was sent as part of an e-mail from Jack

Rolling in the Church Aisles
Worried about the little country church’s tough financial straits, its
pastor asked the parishioners to dig deep into their pockets. “Dig
deep,” she said over and over as the collection plate was passed
down the pews. “Dig deep!”
At the end of the service, a young boy tugged on the pastor’s robe.
“Did you get the money you needed for the church?”
The reverend shook her head sadly. “I’m afraid we didn’t dig deep
enough today, young man.”
“I know just how you feel, Reverend Sonya, I’ve been in the backyard
digging to China all summer, and I’m still not there either.”
Dear Pastor:
Judas was the one with the backpack full of stuff. That’s how he got

DORCHESTER
JULY....Sometimes called the “dog days of summer”. Seems
a long time coming this year..WELCOME SUMMER. It is a
special month with the birthstone of ruby, often associated with
contentment, love, passion and integrity.
Special Events:
On May 19th a luncheon was held for Dorchester women at
Houlihan’s Restaurant in Naperville. Nance Nagy and Sue
Lemerman were chairpersons. Thirty four attended and dined
on offered entres, beverages and dessert. The food was quite good
and everyone had a fun time. Several former neighbors joined
us for lunch. Many thanks to Nance and Sue for providing each
of us with a lovely spring flower. The next luncheon will be
18
on JULY 28th, hosted by Barbara Banick, Sandie Bello and
Gloria Hainsworth. Time and place to be announced. Save
September 22nd for our last luncheon, hosted by Mary Bosco
and Penny Campbell. More information at a later date.
Don’t forget the summer pizza party being held on August
7th.
The Binkus grandchildren have sure been busy. First Larissa
Depasqua, our granddaughter who is a 2nd grade teacher in
Daytona Beach was recognized by her Superintendent and
School Board as an outstanding teacher leader in her school.
Her brother Trent Binkus just graducated from Embry Riddle
University with a degree in Homeland Security and a minor in
Meteorology. He was offered a position with Commonwealth
Edison in Illinois. Grandma and Grandpa attended the
graduation. Lily Binkus has graduated from Plainfield East
H/S and is going to St. Ambrose College in Iowa on a volley
ball Scholarship. She was also Prom Queen. Then Nick Binkus
who is attending University of Illinois in Business Engineering
went to Machu Pichu in Peru, South America for spring break.
When school is out Nick will be headed to China for a short
while. Imagine!
A Very Special Message:
I want to thank everyone for all the many “well wishes”,
telephone calls, cards and prayers for my daughter and for me.
It certainly has made going through some hurdles easier. Also,
I want to thank everyone who took over “subbing” for me and
many etc’s. This is a wonderful place to live.
Much affection, Carla
Red, White & Blue Time:
The Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress
on 07/2/1776, the revised version adopted two days later.
Eight of the 56 signers of the Declaration were born in Briton.
Three Presidents/Signers died on July 4th. John Adams and
Thomas Jefferson in 1826, 50 years after signing. And James
Monroe in 1831.
07/1776 the estimated population of the new nation was 2.5
million. 07/2013 the estmated population was 316.2 million.
To avoid cracking, the Liberty Bell has not been rung since
1846. Every July 4th it is symbolically tapped 13 times.
Enjoy the holiday, be safe and take each “hot” day in stride.
