2 - Wine Capital of Canada
w w w.winecapitalofcanada.com Official Visitor Guide Cultivate a moment. We’ve got lots of them. Take one to savour a new favourite wine on a sun-soaked patio. Another to learn a new art form. Stare into the distance as the perfect swing sends your golf ball to the green. Or breathe crisp winter air atop a snowy mountain trail. Like a good recipe, Oliver lets you play with the best of its ingredients to create the perfect stay in the Wine Capital of Canada. Take a dash of the outdoors, a measure of culture, combine with creativity and top with fresh fruit and air...perfection. Each season in Oliver has its own flavour, you’ll want to try them all. Catch some of the Okanagan’s famous champagne powder on Mount Baldy. Spend the day on the slopes, and once the muscles tire, area wineries will tempt your palate with winter in wine country, from traditional mulled cider to a rosé revolution. In the warmer months, mix your love of the outdoors with a hike, bike or marathon. We’ve even got one race that combines your run with wine. Be prepared to brag when you finish. And if that’s not enough to impress your friends, a plethora of fishing holes – some of the best trout and bass spots in the world – will surely help you craft and cultivate a good “one that got away” story. Blame the big one’s escape on the distraction of your surroundings. Springtime blossoms, summer star-gazing, autumn vineyards, the reflection of winter ice. It’s your Oliver moment. Savour it. www.winecapitalofcanada.com Tweet us @WineCapital, or tag us #oliverbc Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WineCapitalofCanada 2 Canadian Tourism Commission 3 TOTA / Don Weixl Official Visitor Guide 2013 Table of Contents Summer 6 Wine and Dine 7 Welcome to Oliver Autumn 11 Fruits of our Land 12 Winter 15 Map 16 Paint the Town 18 Cultivate the Moment 21 supporting our approximately 9,000 residents. Agriculture is our primary industry watching sanctuaries and fantastic fishing spots. We are also home to many festivals and events including the half-iron man triathlon and our world famous South Okanagan. Come for the wine but stay for the experience! Visit www.winecapitalofcanada.com to choose your favourite. Linger on in the sunshine, savouring a decadent dessert – it’s likely the chef got those strawberries that morning from a farmer down the road. Gather your own bounty, scavenger-hunt style, and grill up a foodie adventure. Indulge in a hearty meal after a day on the slopes and wash it down with a pint of local microbrew. In the Wine Capital of Canada it almost goes without saying – we’ve got a wine for that. Taste your way to the perfect picnic wine or discover that special bottle of Cabernet; whatever your pursuit, experience our terroir. Whether it’s a gourmet meal prepared by a Red Seal chef, a midday break at the local bakery, or a visit to the Mexican or Indian grocer for that spice forgotten on the counter at home, Oliver’s diversity of flavours tempt any palate. Pair with more than 25 wineries, and it’s bon appetit time. TOTA / Gary Aldus There’s a reason why one of our wine trails is called the Golden Mile. Summer is a season of sunshine. Enjoy the sun-soaked Black Sage Bench wine route too. This is triathlon country. Choose from a number held in the Oliver area if you swim, bike and run, or volunteer and simply wear out those arm muscles as you cheer on competitors from around the world. Give your legs a workout with a bike ride; a short one on a trail, or a long one up a mountain. 6 Too strenuous? How about lifting a glass? Two dozen wineries will help you hydrate during these hot, dry weeks. Take a break on a winery patio with some local charcuterie or a gourmet dinner as the sun sets. Don’t forget to snap a photo of the view. Do you take a lot of food photos? We all do these days... but this time, cultivate your burgeoning chef skills with snapshots of a cooking class, and get ready to impress your friends. Take a sunscreen break at a museum or art gallery and learn about Oliver’s colourful history. Finish the day with Music in the Park, with your toes embracing the cool grass and your ears enjoying some cool tunes, or grab a partner and dance the night away as the stars come out. 7 Perfectly placed to make fine wine and good friends. Most wineries are open to the public either year round, seasonally or by appointment. As the night air begins to chill, you’ll know...you’ve fallen for Oliver in autumn. 11 TOTA/Don Weixl Fruits of our Land With more than 400 farms cultivating the land to grow fresh produce, agriculture has been at the heart of Oliver since town namesake Sir John brought irrigation to the community in the early 1900s. From ground crops to fruit trees, farmers have tilled these soils for generations. This is where ‘freshly picked’ means knocking the dirt off a bunch of carrots from the farmers’ market, or climbing a ladder in the u-pick cherry orchard. Springtime brings weeks of blooming fields, like a fragrant wave flowing through the valley. Starting in mid-April (cherries) and ending in early May (apples), Oliver orchards literally burst into life. By summer it’s harvest time, beginning late in June and stretching well into October. It’s a patchwork quilt of colours, with golden Bartlett pears, deep red Bing cherries and bright green Granny Smith apples stitched together by rows of vineyards. Gleaners give back After converting an old 1920s tobaccodrying barn into a fully renovated food processing plant, the Okanagan Gleaners got to work and began taking local produce to create dry soup mixes. These soup mixes and dried fruits are distributed across the globe to provide meals to those in need, producing more than 6 million servings per year. See? We live here, and even we are affected. Take one part setting sun, add two parts live music, a dash of evening air, and stir for hours. In fact, the entire community gets involved – locally raised sheep donate wool for hand-dyed yarns, and landscapes pose daily for en-plein-air painters. From historical landmarks to hockey, birding to baseball, Oliver is where you can learn a thing (or two). Impress your friends with your new chef skills. Take a cooking class at Hester Creek Winery. Photo buff? Hike McIntyre Bluff. See the sky and wildlife through your lens. Explore the original town site at Fairview, or see how they used to do things in the gold rush days at the local jail – it’s not used for anything now but photo-ops and tall tales. Oliver’s history is intricately tied to the heady boom-and-bust days of six shooters and dreams of striking it rich, even if those days didn’t last very long. The museum offers a snapshot of early settler life so there’s likely a good story or two waiting for you. Tony Munday There are 28,000 bird species around. Try to count a few while on a hike, bike or kayak. You might spot an owl. Burn off some energy at the community centre’s outdoor saltwater pool, or wind down with a walk to the beach at Tuc-el-Nuit Lake; its non-motorized mantra means hours of uninterrupted floating for those seeking quiet relaxation. Skydive? Get a handle on high altitude at the Oliver airport and see the town from a new perspective. Speaking of heights, Mt. Baldy welcomes skiers, boarders, and snowshoers on its snow-filled playground – a ‘locals’ mountain where everyone feels like a local, even for a day. Dance the night away at an outdoor concert at a winery, wine in hand. Catch the big one...or brag about the one that got away at some of the best trout fishing spots around. Pause on a cross-country ski journey at Mount Baldy, and listen to the snow fall. OK Lure Works Improve your swing -- the golf version, not the dance -- at a nationally acclaimed 18-hole course. Eileen Redding Hit the ice on Vaseux Lake. Drop a fishing line or grab your skates. Sun worshipper or snow lover, history buff or adventure seeker, your next tall tale is closer than you think. Trace your roots or marvel at the extensive photo collection from Oliver’s pioneer days at the Oliver Archives. Stride out on a self-guided walking tour to discover Oliver’s fascinating history and architectural treasures for yourself. 10 Cultivate a moment, or the makings of a fresh pie.
