Official Visitor Guide
Cultivate a moment.
We’ve got lots of them. Take one to savour a new
favourite wine on a sun-soaked patio. Another to
learn a new art form. Stare into the distance as the
perfect swing sends your golf ball to the green. Or
breathe crisp winter air atop a snowy mountain trail.
Like a good recipe, Oliver lets you play with the best
of its ingredients to create the perfect stay in the
Wine Capital of Canada. Take a dash of the outdoors,
a measure of culture, combine with creativity and
top with fresh fruit and air...perfection.
Each season in Oliver has its own flavour, you’ll want
to try them all.
Catch some of the Okanagan’s famous champagne
powder on Mount Baldy. Spend the day on the
slopes, and once the muscles tire, area wineries will
tempt your palate with winter in wine country, from
traditional mulled cider to a rosé revolution.
In the warmer months, mix your love of the outdoors
with a hike, bike or marathon. We’ve even got one
race that combines your run with wine. Be prepared
to brag when you finish.
And if that’s not enough to impress your friends, a
plethora of fishing holes – some of the best trout
and bass spots in the world – will surely help you
craft and cultivate a good “one that got away” story.
Blame the big one’s escape on the distraction of
your surroundings. Springtime blossoms, summer
star-gazing, autumn vineyards, the reflection of
winter ice.
It’s your Oliver moment. Savour it.

On behalf of our residents, we extend you a warm welcome and invite you to
come and experience all that Oliver has to offer.
Oliver is a quaint community dedicated to the preservation of our agriculture.
Along with the 36 percent of B.C.’s vineyard acreage, our 400 plus farms also
produce world class fruit and vegetables. Agriculture is our primary industry
watching sanctuaries and fantastic fishing spots. We are also home to many
festivals and events including the half-iron man triathlon and our world famous
South Okanagan. Come for the wine but stay for the experience!

Wine and Dine
From rejuvenating summer patio sipping to fortifying
winter comfort food, Oliver is farm-to-table country. It’s
where chefs tend vegetable gardens and sustainable is part
of our culinary landscape.
Summer
Road 13 Vineyards / Stuart Bish
Wine-soaked events take place
throughout the year. Visit
www.winecapitalofcanada.com
to choose your favourite.
Linger on in the sunshine, savouring a decadent dessert
– it’s likely the chef got those strawberries that morning
from a farmer down the road. Gather your own bounty,
scavenger-hunt style, and grill up a foodie adventure.
Indulge in a hearty meal after a day on the slopes and wash
it down with a pint of local microbrew.
In the Wine Capital of Canada it almost goes without saying
– we’ve got a wine for that. Taste your way to the perfect
picnic wine or discover that special bottle of Cabernet;
whatever your pursuit, experience our terroir.
Whether it’s a gourmet meal prepared by a Red Seal chef, a
midday break at the local bakery, or a visit to the Mexican
or Indian grocer for that spice forgotten on the counter at
home, Oliver’s diversity of flavours tempt any palate. Pair
with more than 25 wineries, and it’s bon appetit time.
TOTA / Gary Aldus
There’s a reason why one of our wine trails is called the
Golden Mile. Summer is a season of sunshine. Enjoy the
sun-soaked Black Sage Bench wine route too.
This is triathlon country. Choose from a number held in
the Oliver area if you swim, bike and run, or volunteer
and simply wear out those arm muscles as you cheer
on competitors from around the world. Give your legs a
workout with a bike ride; a short one on a trail, or a long
one up a mountain.
6
Too strenuous? How about lifting a glass? Two dozen
wineries will help you hydrate during these hot, dry
weeks. Take a break on a winery patio with some local
charcuterie or a gourmet dinner as the sun sets. Don’t
forget to snap a photo of the view.
Do you take a lot of food photos? We all do these days...
but this time, cultivate your burgeoning chef skills with
snapshots of a cooking class, and get ready to impress
your friends.
Take a sunscreen break at a museum or art gallery and
learn about Oliver’s colourful history. Finish the day with
Music in the Park, with your toes embracing the cool
grass and your ears enjoying some cool tunes, or grab a
partner and dance the night away as the stars come out.
7
Perfectly placed
to make
fine wine and
good friends.
Most wineries are open to the public
either year round, seasonally or by
appointment. Stop by the Oliver Visitor
Centre for a current wine tour map.

We are the Wine Capital of Canada, and this is our season
to show off. Book an extended stay for the Okanagan Fall
Wine Festival, and browse dozens of events throughout
the region. A wine-themed breakfast? Why not. Blending
your own Bordeaux-style bottle? Be a winemaker, if only
for a few hours. Form a team, get some costumes, and
stomp some grapes at the Festival of the Grape.

Step away from the stomping and climb a ladder. The
harvest season is long and varied, and nothing tastes
better than your own hand-picked and hand-made “farm
to table” pie. Explore fruit stands dotted along highways
and country roads, gathering all the fresh ingredients any
cook could desire.
Take a break from the fruits of your labour. Head outdoors
to watch the salmon run, or hike up McIntyre Bluff in
search of wildlife and truly get back to the land, capturing
the stillness of a moment with a Bighorn sheep.
As the night air begins to chill, you’ll know...you’ve fallen
for Oliver in autumn.

TOTA/Don Weixl
Fruits of our Land
With more than 400 farms cultivating the land to grow fresh
produce, agriculture has been at the heart of Oliver since
town namesake Sir John brought irrigation to the community
in the early 1900s.
From ground crops to fruit trees, farmers have tilled these soils
for generations. This is where ‘freshly picked’ means knocking
the dirt off a bunch of carrots from the farmers’ market, or
climbing a ladder in the u-pick cherry orchard.
Springtime brings weeks of blooming fields, like a fragrant
wave flowing through the valley. Starting in mid-April
(cherries) and ending in early May (apples), Oliver orchards
literally burst into life. By summer it’s harvest time, beginning
late in June and stretching well into October.
It’s a patchwork quilt of colours, with golden Bartlett pears,
deep red Bing cherries and bright green Granny Smith apples
stitched together by rows of vineyards.

Gleaners give back
After converting an old 1920s tobaccodrying barn into a fully renovated food
processing plant, the Okanagan Gleaners
got to work and began taking local
produce to create dry soup mixes. These
soup mixes and dried fruits are distributed
across the globe to provide meals to those
in need, producing more than 6 million
servings per year. Get a taste for their

Winter
Winter brings Mt Baldy to life on this hill prized by locals,
ready to be discovered for skiing and boarding, a trek on
snowshoe or across a Nordic trail. Bundle up the family
for a day of tobogganing, making cheeks rosy and smiles
wide, here or on a local trail.
Seeking a slower adventure? Grab a thermos full of java
from a local coffee shop, your favourite tackle, and wait
for the big one to come along. Wave a friendly hello to
your fellow ice-fishers on Vaseux Lake. Take your skates
and stick out for a game on natural ice.
Warm up after a day outside with dinner and a show. The
South Okanagan Concert Series, the Oliver Movie Theatre
and troupes of actors walking the planks of a stage make
for a perfect entertaining end to a crisp, clear winter day.
Grab a glass and sit by the fire. Cultivate a winter moment.

TO OK FALLS
Paint the Town...with Colour & Music
Our performers act, dance, sing and play all
year round. Take in an outdoor concert, or
come inside for an evening ‘on the boards’, to
quote a thespian, or grab some popcorn and
catch an award-winning film.
Oliver Parks & Rec
Around here, it’s easy to see how artists find
inspiration: sunshine streams through the canopy
of leaves, filtering its way to a cluster of fruit and
transforming each tiny grape into a glowing orb. See?
We live here, and even we are affected.
Take one part setting sun, add two parts live music, a
dash of evening air, and stir for hours. Outdoor concerts
can make a summertime getaway extra special,
whether it’s grooving to jazz in the park or catching the
first glimpse of a Juno-quality band at a local winery. It’s
the perfect backdrop for an outdoor music gig – from
dancing on the lawn with your best friend, to kicking
up your heels at Thursday night music in the park in the
summer months.

Stimulate all of your senses – including a feast for your
eyes. The technicolour beauty of farmer’s orchards and
the desert sky inspires painters, sculptors, and other
artists to put their best brush (or yarn spinner) forward.
In fact, the entire community gets involved – locally
raised sheep donate wool for hand-dyed yarns, and
landscapes pose daily for en-plein-air painters.

Cultivate the Moment
On a warm summer evening, soak up songs at Music in
the Park.
From historical landmarks to hockey, birding to baseball, Oliver is where
you can learn a thing (or two).
Impress your friends with your new chef skills. Take a
cooking class at Hester Creek Winery.
Photo buff? Hike McIntyre Bluff. See the sky and wildlife
through your lens.
Explore the original town site at Fairview, or see how they used to do
things in the gold rush days at the local jail – it’s not used for anything now
but photo-ops and tall tales. Oliver’s history is intricately tied to the heady
boom-and-bust days of six shooters and dreams of striking it rich, even
if those days didn’t last very long. The museum offers a snapshot of early
settler life so there’s likely a good story or two waiting for you.
Tony Munday
There are 28,000 bird species around. Try to count a few
while on a hike, bike or kayak. You might spot an owl.
Burn off some energy at the community centre’s outdoor saltwater pool, or
wind down with a walk to the beach at Tuc-el-Nuit Lake; its non-motorized
mantra means hours of uninterrupted floating for those seeking quiet
relaxation. Skydive? Get a handle on high altitude at the Oliver airport
and see the town from a new perspective. Speaking of heights, Mt. Baldy
welcomes skiers, boarders, and snowshoers on its snow-filled playground –
a ‘locals’ mountain where everyone feels like a local, even for a day.
Dance the night away at an outdoor concert at a winery,
wine in hand.
Catch the big one...or brag about the one that got away
at some of the best trout fishing spots around.
Pause on a cross-country ski journey at Mount Baldy,
and listen to the snow fall.
OK Lure Works
Improve your swing -- the golf version, not the dance
-- at a nationally acclaimed 18-hole course.
Eileen Redding
Hit the ice on Vaseux Lake. Drop a fishing line or grab
your skates.
Sun worshipper or snow lover, history buff or adventure seeker, your next
tall tale is closer than you think.
Trace your roots or marvel at the extensive photo collection
from Oliver’s pioneer days at the Oliver Archives. Stride out
on a self-guided walking tour to discover Oliver’s fascinating
history and architectural treasures for yourself.
10 Cultivate a moment, or the makings of a fresh pie. Pick
some juicy fruit, fresh from the tree.

After your round,
enjoy a meal at our
licensed restaurant
and patio.
Break out the binoculars. Spring is a season of sights in
Oliver, with birdsong as the soundtrack.
More than 28,000 species of birds await the avid or
amateur ornithologist. Whether you’ve got binoculars, a
telephoto camera or a smartphone in your pocket, you’ll
be reaching for it to capture an image of our feathered
friends, perhaps even a “who’s who” of the local owl
population if you’re lucky.
Number One Golf Facility
in the South Okanagan
As you’re looking up, take a moment to breathe in the
blossoms. A sign of the cultivation to come, Oliver’s area
orchards and vineyards become a colour palate worthy
of a masterful painting, as trees and vines signal their
readiness for the warm sun.
With over 20 wineries within 20 minutes, Fairview Mountain
is a superb choice for your Desert Wine Country vacation.
Speaking of art, the Spring Arts Faire is a must for those
hunting for a treasure to take home.
Take out a special pair of shoes, your choice: hiking boots
or golf shoes? It’s time to get into the swing of spring.
Our trails beckon for exploration, after all, that’s where
the birds congregate and nature tempts you to take a
moment, and take it all in.

backcountry to Ripley and Madden Lakes, or strolling the boardwalk
at Vaseux Lake to glimpse a golden eagle, there’s a trail to get you out
of (and around) town.
Desert-like conditions mean Oliver is home to a variety of unique
flora and fauna, and new trails to explore the area evolve every few
years. Bring your bicycle – the International Hike and Bike Trail allows
for two-wheeled adventures. Be sure to ride and hike with care,
because the natural beauty includes prickly pear cactus – also known
as ‘jumping cactus’. You might not want to find out why, so it’s best to
stay on the trails.
Geocachers: you’re in luck. At present, we maintain 23 geocaches in
the area, in some pretty unusual places. Don’t know what geocaching
is? Think of it as doing a scavenger hunt, but around the world.
Our ‘travel bugs’ have gone more than 56,000 km – more than the
circumference of the Earth. One is calling the Netherlands home,
another is living in France, while a third is on vacation in Mexico. If
you find a cache, be sure to log it.

Camp under the open sky, with the moon for a flashlight and
the stars as your map. Visit a winery and stay for the night…in
the lap of luxury. Pitch a tent, plug in, draw a bath at a familyfriendly motel – however you travel, we have a place to rest
your head.
From pack in or drive up, there’s a campsite waiting for your
roasted marshmallows and campfire stories – family friendly
or remote hideaway. Got an RV? No problem. Year-round sites
offer everything from comfortable clubhouses to laundry
facilities. Traveling friendships are often formed over late-night
road stories.
Spoil yourself at a B&B or luxury winery guesthouse. Why?
We say why not. Small town hospitality means freshly baked
bread, sensational seasonal fruit dishes, and a hearty breakfast
to fortify the most ardent adventure seeker.

Taste your way through more than 50 wineries, all under one tent
(well, maybe three tents). Each fall, The Festival of the Grape is a
grape-stomping, lawn dancing good time.
Whether it’s eating pulled pork in a farmer’s field or jogging in an
oversized tomato suit, we know how to have a good time.
