March 2011
Keystone Region MG Club
Would you like to be able order custom
club shirts, caps and other club regalia
online?
Regalia chairman Bob Pilat, with the
help of Marty and Marybeth Chamberlain, has recommended that the club
sign up with an “on demand” fulfillment company that will put our club
logo on various items and sell them
online, through the club website.
The club could determine the number
and nature of items to be sold. (Such
as if we want to restrict club shirts to a
certain color or colors.)
The regalia committee recommends
we use a company called Fieldhouse,
which is being used by the Chicagoland
MG Club. Chicagoland has a regalia
sales site linked from their own website, and it is pretty slick. (See it at the
link below.)
There are a number of advantages to
going this way to sell club regalia:
1) The biggest advantage is that the
club would no longer have to put up
money in advance to maintain an
inventory of shirts, sweatshirts, etc.
Many of the shirts we now have “in
stock” were purchased by the club
years ago, and remain unsold because
no one likes the style, size or color of
what we’ve already bought.
2) Having the items online would
mean they are always available to be
seen and purchased. Right now, our
regalia is “out of sight, out of mind,”
and only comes out of the boxes at the
Hellertown show.
3) Members would be able to choose
apparel from a much larger variety of
styles, colors and sizes. Men’s and ladies’ styles could be offered, as well as
different types of jackets, polo shirts,
dress shirts. Other items, such as mugs,
car blankets, duffle bags and tote bags
could also be available. The club would
control what items are sold with our
logo on them.
4) There would be no need to place
bulk orders or minimum quantity
orders. (Although bulk discounts would
be available). Members could order the
items one piece at a time.
Come to Tuesday’s meeting to vote on an online store!

The Steering Column . . . By Dick Horn
Another great year ahead!
That means LBC days are coming, not LCB (Liquor Control
Board), although there have been days... never mind.
The club is having a swap meet at Ken Beck’s garage on
the morning of Sunday, April 10, so get all those parts that
have been laying around ready and boxed up to bring. The
time will be 9 a.m., and this will be open to all the British
car clubs in the area. Tables will NOT be provided, so if you
have so much stuff that you need one, bring your own and a
chair, if your back feels like mine after awhile!
Little British Car days is what we are referring to and the
sooner the better. I’ve been out a couple of times myself to
see if any bugs are still left in the cars, and they do show up,
so I recommend short jaunts in the neighborhood, not too far
from home!
We are also looking into having another go-kart race
day at the S&S Speedway located on Route 209 south of
Stroudsburg. The club had a great time there last year and
the feeling was unanimous to go back. The date and time
will be announced.
We had our first official meeting for the year at Gregory’s
Steakhouse Restaurant and I believe we accomplished quite
a bit. The picnics for the summer months have all been arranged and I want to thank all those who have volunteered
to have the club at their homes in the coming months. As the
dates get near for each one we will be letting you know as to
the “whys and wherefores.”
This month the meeting will be held again at Gregory’s
Steakhouse Restaurant. The date is Tuesday, March 15.
Please come and join the gang for supper and a meeting
afterwards. The meeting will be starting at 7 p.m., and if you
would like to join us for a bite to eat, I recommend arriving
no later than 6 p.m.
Hi, everyone!
I can’t believe it, the sun is actually shining and the temperature is... well, you can’t have
everything, but it’s on the rise!
Founded in 1977

Club MGs
on display
Two club MGs joined the “British Invasion” display at the
America on Wheels museum in
Allentown for the post-holiday
part of the show in January:
Tom Brobst’s 1958 British Racing Green MGA, and Marty and
Marybeth Chamberlain’s 1973
“Metallic Espresso” MGB.
The later-model MGs joined
Mike Jones’ 1950 MG TD,
which had been on display at the
museum since December.

Terry’s TC is a classified as a “home

Going
for it!
Bob’s
’57 MGA
project
By Bob Pilat
Keystone Region MG Club
Club President Dick Horn and Ed
Haas helped me move my “tub”
(chassis) to my painter’s garage in
December.
After I had spent hours of body work
and fitting all the panels many time,
Ed asked me about my doors, and
I told him I’ve had them on and off
more times than I could count!
The tub had 30 or 40 pinholes and
parts cut out. This is the third restoration on this chassis.
After I got three or four quotes for a
full paint job, which would include
some fiberglass work, and also after
looking at two or three sample colors,
Dick suggested his long-time friend
and expert body man, John Gustafson
of Gusto Restorations in Ottsville.
(610-416-5879).
Past paint quotes were upward of
$5,000 to $9,000. I had been expecting to do lots of bodywork myself to
save money. I feared this part of my
restoration because I didn’t want a
bottomless money pit for all my parts
to fall into. This car is also on a tight
budget, and my nature is not to trust
anyone!
However, John came to my house, and
we looked over all the parts, and came
up with an excellent price almost that
day. With a lower
price on a complete
job, I won’t need to
do as much myself,
although I will still
help wet sand toward
the end, which will
be a savings for me in
money.
John also set up a
payment plan, and
will paint small parts
first so I can see the
finished color. But
most of all, he gave
me an itemized list
of time and material. This project is much more than a
paint job – it’s my baby, after 10 years
of parts on-and-off, etc.
John was wonderful and very understanding in every way!
So, the correct way is to paint the tub
off the frame, then install over the
frame. Then paint outside of the tub.
And, as you can see in the photo, I
fabricated a rolling dolly for the tub,
and braced the top!. This was a big
help, said John, since he won’t break
his back painting the bottom rockers
below the doors. The other big help is
to put bolts in all the holes, so I didn’t
have to tap them.
Other than that, all we need is some
nice spring weather to paint and sand.
TOP: Dick Horn, left, and Ed Haas, right, help
Bob Pilat load his MGA tub for the trip to the paint
shop. MIDDLE: Ed clamps Bob’s head ... perhaps
to help keep his head from exploding after years of
working on this project. ABOVE: John Gustafson
examines the work Bob has done on the tub.

Bib and Penny Pilat with
their new 1959 MGA, in
“can’t miss me” yellow.
They drove the new one
home from South New
Jersey in August.
Bob reports that Penny
loves this car, which has a
lot of history, based on all
the dash and rally plaques
it is adorned with inside.
The A replaces the orange
MGB/GT which was
wrecked this summer. (See
last page).
And, it gives Bob a guide
for putting his ’57 A back
together again!
Salty’s
’50 MG
TD resto
Ken “Salty” Saltern is hard
at work putting all the pieces
back together in the total
restoration of his 1950 MG
TD. This is a ground-up
restoration, and he’s doing as
much of the work himself as
he can, with the help of Ken
Beck at K&T Vintage.
Salty intends to have the TD
at the Hellertown show this
June, one way or another.
“I’ll either be driving in on the
field or tow it there and show
it as a work in progress,” he
promises.
No matter what, there will
be no missing it! He plans to
have fun with this car, and
so has painted it Sunburst
Orange Metallic, a modern
Chevrolet color.

Ken “Salty” Saltern
unwraps a screwdriver
set at the gift exchange at the annual
dinner hosted by the
Keystone Region MG
Club and the British
Car Club of the Lehigh
Valley.
Annual dinner warms up winter
Once again, It was a warm and wonderful time again on a
very cold winter’s night when the British Car Club of the
Lehigh Valley and the Keystone Region MG Club got together for the annual “belated holiday” dinner.
Attendance was a little down, but only slightly, with about
37 people from the Keystone MG club and about 18 people
from the BCCLV.
The BarnHouse Village in Bath once again did a great job
handling the food and service, and as always, the clubs enjoyed having their own bar in the next room.
And, for the second year, those attending all received an
“English Cracker,” the British party poppers that provided
everyone with a colorful paper crown, a small prize and
some riddles that evidenced British humor.
In the annual tradition, following dinner Charles de Bourbon
showed his annual “Year in Review” video of club events.
One of the best things about watching it in the dead of
winter is remembering the fun time in our cars in hot, sunny
weather!
Anyone interested in a free copy of the DVD, send an email
to Charles at [email protected] or call him at 570-460-6370.
Another party favor is the club calendar magnet, one for
the Keystone MG club and one for BCCLV members, each
showing a photo from last year’s club show, and promoting
the date of the 2011 events.
If you missed getting your Keystone MG calendar magnet,
they will be available at the Feb. 2 club meeting, or — if
Ken and Cindy forget to bring them, they have a supply at
K&T Vintage Sports Cars.
The Gift Exchange, as always, was very lively. There was a
lot of competive gift-stealing going on.
Among this year’s gifts: A supply of gourmet crab bisque, an
MGB model kit and MGB calendar, brake calipers, champagne, a Diehard battery charger, a wine sack and bottle of
wine, Guiness bread mix, tool bag, Casino Royale DVD,
Stanley toolbox, stationery set with calendar and chocolate;
candle and candle holder, SU tuning book, headlight relay
kit, precision screwdriver kit, a package of 10 mini LED
flashlights, a halogen light on a stand, MG jigsaw puzzle,
bottle of Irish Cream, a bottle of Cognac, a bottle of Chardonnay, an MG TC jigsaw puzzle, an MG belt buckle, a
Mothers clay bar detailing kit, more wine, a metric dogbone
wrench, an LED head lamp, a tool kit, and a multi kit.
One of the most unusual gifts of the night was a Nerf (foam
ball) gun, which Keystone member Leon Morgan, a pastor,
promised to use on sleeping members of his congregation.

TRIATHLON IX • August 26-28, 2011
Point Lookout Resort, Northport, Maine
The Keystone MG club is taking part as a club team!
We plan to leave on August 23, for a leisurely drive north.
Fun weekend event features a mountain climb, fun rally and wacky car show.
Registration limited to 100 cars. Register now with $75 deposit.
Package cost of $625 includes two nights lodging for two, all meals, all event fees.
British car clubs from throughout the northeast attend the British Marque Car Club News “Triathlon,” a fun-filled weekend event held every other year. The Keystone Region MG Club made a group appearance at the 2009 event, dressed in more or less authentic 1960s70s hippie garb, to match the era most of our cars were built. The Triathlon features a hill climb, a rally and a fun, informal car show,
which is where some clubs have started coming up with themes and costumes to help win points. Triathlon IX will be held in August in
Northport, Maine, and a group is already forming to go, to reprise the “hippie” theme. (Hey, it’s easy and cheap to do, so why not?)

ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED
A sight none of us ever want
to see!
This is Penny Pilat’s 1974
MGB/GT (previously owned
by Dick Horn), the victim of
a careless driver who hit the
GT from behind and pushed it
under a delivery truck ahead.
It was a total loss, but the Pilats report Hagerty Insurance
came through!
The Pilats weren’t long without another MG on the road,
though. See page XX for the
latest addition to the family.
