Just a few short months ago, we recruited readers of The Messenger to nominate their peers, family members, friends and neighbors whom they feel are outstanding community leaders to be honored in our third annual special section Forty Under 40. Fort Dodge and it’s surrounding communities should feel honored that they boast so many youthful leaders as we were inundated with nominations of those considered to be current or up-and-coming community ambassadors. Narrowing the field of candidates down to only 40 was a difficult task. But as you can see, the age of leadership has no boundaries as we found leaders in their mid-20’s and those that are nearing the 40 year mark. The level of community involvement collectively held by this year’s Forty Under 40 candidates is staggering. Many are highly involved with their children’s activities, are board members to major organizations and a few have even created and instituted their own professional organizations. The level of serving their communities is never ending. Please join us in congratulating the 2007 Forty Under 40 honorees for all of their hard work, dedication and community involvement. Dr. W. Diversified business opportunities. 7 The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 Stacey Bochart Stacey Bochart 8 CITY OF RESIDENCE: Fort Dodge HOMETOWN: Eldridge, IA AGE: 32 FAMILY: Single-1 basset hound, Abby PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Fort Dodge Correctional Facility JOB TITLE: Correctional Counselor EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree from Simpson College, Indianola, IA-major in Communications and minor in Criminal Justice COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: Active member of Grace Lutheran Church, President of Hawkeye Community Theater, teach Introduction To Counseling at Iowa Central Community College, and work part time at the Community Orchard. FUTURE GOALS: At some point I would like to go back to school and earn my Master’s Degree. At one time I really wanted to move back to the Quad City area but right now I am very happy with my job and have been blessed with wonderful friends here. If anything I would like to do more community service with children. I see the future when I work everyday with men who had a rough childhood and see how many of their issues could have been prevented with mentoring and stabilized home lives. WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? Since I work 3 jobs I have very little “free time”. I enjoy traveling to Davenport to spend time with family, working around my house (I love to clean) and in my yard. I also enjoy attending productions at Hawkeye Community Theater and when I am able I really like to be on stage. THREE THINGS YOU LIKE THE BEST ABOUT WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. Working at the prison is a challenge. There are never 2 days alike. I can go to work and think I know what’s on my agenda and within minutes my whole itinerary changes and I’m working on something else. 2. I love to teach. I spend my days teaching classes such as anger management, victim impact, corrective thinking, and relapse prevention. In a lot of ways teaching is like being on stage. I can be energetic and funny and I keep the offender’s attention and feel like they at least heard me, whether they use what they learned is up to them, but I know they couldn’t fall asleep in one of my classes. 3. Most importantly, I love that I know I’m making a difference. A lot of people are of the mindset that the offenders are castaways and we shouldn’t spend time trying to rehabilitate them. The reality is that the majority of these men will be back out in our communities at some point-they do not have life sentences. I want them to be successful when they return so that there will be no more victims from their actions. THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. I’d like moral of all people to improve. It sounds like a Pollyanna response, but in reality, bad things happen to us all and life can be unfair-we have to decide how we want to deal with it. 2. Less criminal activity by juveniles. I don’t know how, but I know that more and more kids claim to be “bored” when they really have options and chose the negative choices. 3. I would love to see Fort Dodge upgrade the Crossroads mall. I remember growing up and being able to spend time at Northpark Mall in Davenport playing arcade games, having several choices of places to eat and shop. BEST ADVICE SOMEONE ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: The best advice I’ve ever been given comes from another counselor who received it from “The Four Agreements: A Toltec Wisdom Book” by Don Miguel Ruiz “Don’t take anything personally-Personal importance is the maximum expression of selfishness because we make the assumption that everything is about “me”. Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves.” A LESSON LEARNED THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS: I’ve learned that I am in control of my attitude. When I chose to bring good things to me then I feel good. And the opposite is also true. Who doesn’t want to feel good? I chose how I want to look at things around me. If my day is rotten I ask myself what I can do to make it better, instead of blaming those around me. It truly makes me feel more in control of my life. The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 CITY OF RESIDENCE: Fort Dodge HOMETOWN: Fort Dodge AGE: 39 FAMILY: Husband, Brad, married 17 years. Family-oriented company. 3. The people I work with are the best. I have been with the company for 19 years and have been fortunate to work in several areas of the company during that time. For me, in the end it is the people of Heartland that make it a great place to go to everyday. THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. Seeing more community participation in the activities that are available throughout the year for all ages (music, arts etc.) 2. More retail shopping options. 3. It would be nice to have a new aquatics center in our community. BEST ADVICE SOMEONE ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: A very good friend once told me to just be myself. I cannot mold myself into what others want me to be, be true to yourself and don’t compromise your beliefs just to please others. A LESSON LEARNED THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS: Not too long ago I lost a sibling unexpectedly, and it really opened my eyes to live each day to the fullest and be aware of all things around you. Live each day to the fullest and appreciate all those who are fortunate to share your life with you each day. Someone once told me to “don’t sweat the small stuff”. Believe me, I look at things in a different light. “Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Shannon Bushman Shannon Bushman 9 The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 Chrisann Campbell CITY OF RESIDENCE: Otho HOMETOWN: Renwick, IA AGE: 36 FAMILY: husband Mark, Daschund Cali, 14 nieces and nephews, and one great niece. I’ve had the opportunity to play at some very nice stadiums in the country and many of them fall short of the tradition of Dodger Stadium. I hope many generations to come have the experience to play on that field. We are very lucky as a community to have a place that is this special. THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. Growth, Fort Dodge needs to grow both in size and economically. 2. Attract younger families to Fort Dodge. This goes along with growth, if we bring more jobs to town we will attract younger families who will have the opportunity to call Fort Dodge home! 3. The people I’m able to assist through work and get to know through my community, we share a very similar value system. Three Things You’d Like to See to Improve the Community Where You Work or Live: 1. An indoor park facility for children where they can run and play during the winter months. 2. An establishment for adults that provides live diverse music styles. This live experience would enrich the lives of our residents and the visitors it would bring to the area. It would also provide a place for couples to dance and get to know one another on date night. 3. An eating establishment that only serves healthy food with no other options available on the menu. Best Advice Someone Else Has Given You: From my mom—-don’t worry , it will all work out. A Lesson Learned That You’d Like to Share With Others: Moderation is the key, no matter what it is. The atmosphere. We have a very positive atmosphere at Iowa Central to work in. 2. We have the support to contend for a national championship every year in baseball. Not every college has the support we get, and it makes the difference year in and year out. 3. I like the fact that I live in my home community. I take a lot of ownership in living in Fort Dodge/Badger area because it means something more to me than simply a place that I own a home. SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: I would like to see more available play space for kids. We have lost numerous community youth baseball fields that neighborhood kids could ride their bikes to and play. Kids need to be outside and active, but as a community, we are expanding which is good-but we are not rebuilding to give the youth an opportunity to play. THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. More entertainment activities brought to the town for people to do. 2. Better retail shops so people don’t have to go out of town to get what they want. 3. More industry with better paying jobs. BEST ADVICE SOME ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: “Hold nothing back, leave everything you have on the field so you know you did the best you could.” Coach Sam Moser A LESSON LEARNED THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS: Goals can only be reached with hard work and trusting others to help along the way. Not everything can be done alone and nothing is given to you in life. The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 33 City of Residence: Fort Dodge since Dec. 2000 Hometown: I moved frequently growing up due to my father being a missionary/Methodist minister, so I really do not have a hometown. Age: 37 Family: I have three children: Daughter-Katriece (14) in 9th grade at FDSH; Son - Kyree (8) in 3rd grade at Duncombe Elementary and Son-Kyler (7) in 2nd grade at Duncombe Elementary. Place of Employment: Rabiner Treatment Center since Jan. 2001 Job Title: Director of Admissions & Marketing Education: BA in Psychology and Sociology from Simpson College Community Activities: Member 1st United Methodist Church, Alumnae chapter of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Volunteering with my kids’ schools and/or activities Future Goals: Return to school to obtain a Masters Degree in Social Work. Take my family on a mission trip and increase our volunteering/giving back to others. What do you do when you are not working: As a mom of 3, I am not sure when I am actually not working. I do enjoy watching my kids participate in extracurricular activities. We usually have something scheduled everyday of the week. 3 Things you like best about where you work or live: 1. I have worked with adolescents basically since I was one. I cannot image not working with adolescents in some capacity. I have the opportunity to meet with boys, their families and referring DHS/JCS workers every week which I really enjoy. CEO Brad Klug leads by example. Through his leadership, integrity, strong work ethic, compassion and discipline, staff are able to develop professionally in a supportive environment. Working for Mr. Klug and the Iowa State Police Association is a privilege and honor. 2. I initially moved to Fort Dodge to be close to my parents Rev. Edward and Joan Phillips as they retired from Riverside UMC and remained in this area. It was important to me to have them involved in my children’s lives. Now that they are in their seventies, it is now my turn to help with their needs which they deserve as they have been wonderful parents. 3. My kids have all been involved with the FD Soccer Association. It has been a great experience. Joe and Linda Ruge are such positive, supportive people and do a great job. As a family, we love our Saturdays at the soccer complex. 3 Things You would like to see improve the community: 1. It would be great to have more choices for kids’ activities. It was such a loss when the Children’s Museum closed. Reopening a skating rink or building an aquatic center should be priorities for a family centered community. My boys have benefited by participating in the sports camps that Athletes for Education and Success (AFES) has provided. Their commitment to keep kids active and safe at a low cost to the parent is a great service to our community. 2. I would love to see the mall expand and bring in additional retail choices. Doing so may keep more people shopping in town versus driving to Ames or Des Moines. 3. Currently we have plenty of fast food type restaurants. It would be nice to see more choices for casual, family eating. Best Advice Someone Else has Given You: It comes from one of my father’s favorite teachings from a book entitled: Rabbinic Stories for Christian Ministers and Teachers. Paraphrased it tells of a Rabbi named Zusya that states when he is before God, God will not question him why he was not more like Moses or Isaiah because he is neither. God will ask him “Why were you not Zusya?” Zusya’s response is “Have I lived up to the best that is in me? What shall I answer?” This serves as a daily reminder to try and be a good person and fulfill my God given potential. A Lesson Learned that you would like to Share with Others: I try to be the type of person that “says what they mean and means what they say”. It is much easier to be open and honest with others rather than communicate indirectly or waste time and energy trying to remember what excuse or story was told. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” - Romans 10:9-10 A LESSON LEARNED THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS: That there is nothing I can do to earn my way to Heaven except to have Jesus Christ as my personal Saviour which is offered as a free gift through Him to anyone who will receive it. ark Sharpe THREE THINGS YOU LIKE THE BEST ABOUT WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 Amy Skramstad Amy Skramstad 36 NAME: Amy Skramstad CITY OF RESIDENCE: Manson IA HOMETOWN: Lisbon, North Dakota AGE: 32 FAMILY: Spouse John, Daughters: Kylee (3) and Kayla (8 months) PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Good Samaritan Society of Manson JOB TITLE: Administrator EDUCATION: Major in Business Administration with an emphasis in Long Term Care Administration COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: Volunteer with summer bible school, Ministerial Association (Manson Churches organize Annual Thanksgiving Service, Christmas Services, Lenten Services, Crop Walks, and more to support food panty and other community needs), Manson Economic Development and Chamber (encourages new growth in businesses, housing, community events, and more), Lions Club, and Hosting Legislative members. THREE THINGS YOU LIKE THE BEST ABOUT WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. Working with staff who are resident centered, Christian centered, and caring towards each other. 2. Having fun with exciting care center and community events ( November 6th Soup Supper, Chili Cook-off) 3. Laughing with staff and residents THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. Having more dedicated Christians caring for our elderly with hearts of gold. 2. More celebrations of dances and special events with a Community building. 3. Have more safe childcare available and an elderly assisted living. BEST ADVICE SOME ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: “Do unto others as they do to you” and “always be the bigger person for the right reasons” my Mom and Dad (Robert and Darlene Barr). The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 37 CITY OF RESIDENCE: Callender HOMETOWN: Clare AGE: 33 FAMILY: Husband - Jeff; Children, Brock -4 , Madelyn - 2 and Drew - 2 PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Linking Families and Communities JOB TITLE: Executive Director EDUCATION: B.A. from Central College, Pella, IA COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: At this point in my life I am not very involved in community activities as I feel that it is important to spend time with my children. I am involved in the preschool that my son attends and involved with my career and activities at a state level, which has an effect on our communities. FUTURE GOALS: The most important of my goals is to raise happy, healthy children that contribute positively to society. I plan to continue to advocate for children’s issues and push for increased quality in early care and education as I feel that we need to give all children positive, developmentally appropriate experiences during the first five years as this is a crucial time in brain development therefore having a huge impact on future success in school and beyond. In the longer term, I would like to run a marathon, complete a master’s degree and possibly a PhD. WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? When I’m not working, I am raising three small children with my husband, Jeff. My days and evenings are filled playing with the kids, reading books, taking my son to preschool, doing household chores and mediating child squabbles. After the kids go to bed, I like to exercise, play volleyball, watch HGTV, assist my husband with his business, Jeff’s Jons, think about work-related issues and sleep. THREE THINGS YOU LIKE THE BEST ABOUT WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. I love my work as I get to make positive changes for children and families, work with great groups of people and for a wonderful organization. 2. I love living close to my family. What a wonderful thing for my children and myself! 3. I love raising my kids in the country where they can run, explore and experience farm life. THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: 1. I would like to see the quality of child care improved, mandatory registration and regulations enforced. Most children spend the majority of their waking hours in the care of someone other than their parent(s). It is important that those environments be safe, healthy and of high quality. Currently registration is not mandatory and the regulating body doesn’t have the staff to do their required unannounced compliance checks (which is only 20% of the registered child care providers). 2. I would like to see increased opportunities for recreation and socialization for all of the community in the form of an enhanced trail system, more events and outings for all to enjoy, cultural opportunities expanded and a revitalized downtown. 3. I would like to see everyone in the community to work together and have respect for themselves, their property, neighbors, etc. I feel that is the way that we can make and sustain positive changes in our community. BEST ADVICE SOMEONE ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: Always do the right thing. While it may not popular, you will be able to live with your decision knowing that it doesn’t conflict with your morals and values. A LESSON LEARNED THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS: Change is inevitable. In working with groups of people, I have learned that there are roughly 1/3 of people that embrace change and 1/3 that are highly resistant, while the other 1/3 are somewhere in the middle. While it is important to include all of them in the change process, you can’t let the highly resistant ones impede progress. Proceed with those who are willing and you will bring those in the middle and finally those that were resistant along. Elizabeth Stanek Elizabeth Stanek The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 Jason Swedlund ason Swedlund 38 City of Residence: Fort Dodge Hometown: Fort Dodge Age: 30 Family: Single Place of Employment: Sacred Heart Church, St. Olaf Lutheran Church & Bruce Graham Funeral Home Job Title: Sacred Heart Director of Music, St. Olaf Lutheran Organist & Sanctuary Choir Director & Funeral Assistant Bruce-Graham Funeral Home Education: 1995 Graduate of St. Edmond High School, 2002 attendee of the Institute of Sacred Music at the University of Iowa, Private Organ student of William Kuhlman (Professor Emeritus of Organ and Church Music Luther College) & Dr. Marilou Kratzenstein (Professor Emeritus of Organ and Music History University of Northern Iowa), Member of the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society and the Federalist Society Future Goals: I am currently working on finishing my B.A. with a Major in History and considering attending either Mortuary School or Law School upon the completion of my History Degree. Three things I like Best about were I work or live: 1. Working for Sacred Heart and St. Olaf I am very blest to be able to work in two very historic and beautiful Church buildings. The art and the architecture in both buildings is beyond measure. It’s always a magnificent treat to make music in both of these beautiful Church buildings. 2. Working at Bruce-Graham Funeral Home for nearly fourteen years has been a wonderful and rewarding experience. I find the home itself, its stained glass window, oak paneling and grand staircase to be a magnificent architectural treasure in Webster County. Watching Scott Graham work with families, his attention to detail and his true compassion for the families he serves is truly an inspiration. 3. One of the true gems that I believe Fort Dodge offers is the many opportunities to be enriched in the Fine Arts. From the Karl King Band to the Blanden Museum and many School and Church Concerts Fort Dodge offers a plethora of Fine Arts opportunities. Things I’d like to see to improve in the community where I work or live: 1. I would like to see greater involvement of young people in Fort Dodge. There are many Civic and Private Organizations such as the Knights of Columbus who would love to get “Young People” more involved in both community and Church activities and projects. 2. I would like to see Local Government (and all Government) take a smaller role in our lives. Whether it’s lower property taxes or letting the Private Sector find solutions to problems, in many cases, “Government is not the solution to the problem, Government is the problem.” Best Advice someone has given me: The best thing that life offers is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. A Lesson Learned that you’d like to share with others: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” Theodore Roosevelt The Messenger/Fort Dodge, Iowa Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 39 CITY OF RESIDENCE: Fort Dodge HOMETOWN: Fort Dodge AGE: 35 FAMILY: Husband- Matt, Daughter Macy (14), Son Mitchell (3) PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Dr. Gonzales and Dr. Wood JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant EDUCATION: St Edmond High School; Iowa Central Community College COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES: Co-Chair Relay For Life; Hospice Volunteer; Past President Civic Dance Troupe FUTURE GOALS: To raise happy and successful children. THREE THINGS YOU’D LIKE TO SEE TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY WHERE YOU WORK OR LIVE: There have been many changes and improvements in Humboldt over the past few years and I am very proud of what the community has done. The Humboldt Family Aquatic Center, Riverfest and the Art Festival are a few examples of community growth that we can be proud of. To continue on our path of growth and improvements, three things that I would like to see are: Continue the efforts to bring people back to our great community. Continue to encourage participation from a more diverse group of people. Continue to offer support to local businesses and business leaders. BEST ADVICE SOMEONE ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: The golden and silver rules: Not only treat people how you want to be treated, but treat people how they want to be treated. I would always like to see more people of all ages genuinely respect each other for who they are. BEST ADVICE SOMEONE ELSE HAS GIVEN YOU: I know everyone has most likely heard this, but treat others with respect, as well as yourself. The way you treat others is often a reflexion of how much respect you have for yourself. Look at the way you deal with others, no matter the circumstances. Respect others; respect yourself. It will come back to you. A LESSON LEARNED THAT YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS: Everything you do has consequences. Think about your choices and make the best decision possible. There is an old samurai saying, “live each day prepared to die the next.” If you were to die tomorrow, what would you leave behind. Would you go knowing you accomplished what was necessary of you and everything was taken care of or would you have lots of unfinished business or debt to leave to your heirs. Don’t procrastinate. Don’t start tomorrow. Do it today. Live life the way you want so that you will not fear death, but welcome it when the time is right.
