TRADITION & TRANSITION 2 0 1 4 - 1 5 S O U T H S I D E A N N U A L V I R G I N I A R E P O R T C O M M U N I T Y C O L L E G E S ince taking the helm at SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE a year ago, we have experienced a whirlwind of successes, challenges, change and commitment to our mission. For me, it has been a great experience, a time of renewed vigor and hope and, of course, an opportunity to learn and develop. In other words, on-thejob, hands-on training. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT DR. AL ROBERTS PRESIDENT Southside Virginia Community College In August, we celebrated the grand opening of the Learning Resources and Student Services Building on the John H. Daniel Campus. This two-story building houses student services; a career center; admissions and records; business office; financial aid; a cafeteria; library; and areas for study, meetings and gatherings. It is a welcome and beautiful addition to our campus and enhances the student experience. New workforce initiatives were entrusted to Virginia’s community colleges during the year. These included the New Virginia Economy Workforce Initiative, a plan that focuses on developing a workforce for “Middle Skills Jobs.” Southside was also designated as a Manufacturing Skills Institute to expand credentialing to close skill gaps in the workforce. Also, the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) has launched a new advanced manufacturing training program for active duty soldiers preparing for the civilian workforce and veterans who have recently transitioned to civilian life. The program is a collaboration amongst, Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), the Commonwealth Center for Manufacturing (C-CAM), the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC), the Crater Regional Workforce Investment Board (Crater WIB), the Fort Lee 91 by SVCC Workforce Veterans Served 2,139 Dual Enrollment Students Number Enrolled in Fall 2014 479 Employers Served 331 23 In Certificate In Diploma 1,163 279 in CSCs in AAS SVCCGLANCE AT A 1,208 1,646 367 Fall 2014 Soldier for Life Program and 180 Skills, an online career and technical education curriculum provider. In December, the college hosted a Health Career Fair for about 200 high school students at the Estes Center. During the year, SVCC also hosted Job Fairs that were well attended and productive for area job seekers and employers. Two new Vice Presidents were hired to enhance and improve service in the areas of Academics and Workforce Development. Dr. Tara Carter was named Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and Keith Harkins is Vice President for Workforce Development and Continuing Education. In May, the college celebrated as 1,200 students received diplomas, certificates and degrees at a ceremony held in Keysville. Attendance was estimated at 4,000 people; and it was a beautiful day as Dr. Dietra Trent, Deputy Secretary of Education for Virginia, was the speaker. Much has been accomplished in one year’s time and there is much more to do. Future plans include a new building for the Christanna Campus, a Physical Therapy Assistant program, continued emphasis on quality and increased focus on enrollment and student success. I appreciate the opportunity to lead this great college into its 45th year and am excited about the future. Meeting the administrators, faculty and staff and getting to know everyone has been a top priority. I have also spent quite a bit of time on the road, learning the back roads, short cuts and highways that cover Southside Virginia. ON THE HORIZON FOR ACADEMICS DR. TARA CARTER VICE PRESIDENT Academic and Student Affairs “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” – SOCRATES Student Services has been busy getting ready for the fall semester and has been working on finalizing advising sheets that will better communicate to students who their advisors are and what type of programs we offer. They have also been spending time researching different advising models that have proven to increase retention rates and will continue to identify and share best practices, so that we can continue to capitalize on the enrollments we have and we can better help students to complete their academic goals. There has been a reorganization of the Divisions with title changes also. Moving forward, we will have a Dean of Humanities, Social Sciences and Business; a Dean of Career and Occupational Technology; and a Dean of Nursing, Allied Health and Natural Sciences. The alignment will serve multiple purposes; but most importantly, this restructure will create the environment for departmental collaborations, budget management, innovation, and focus on student learning outcomes/performance objectives. Change is good and necessary. I am excited to build the new here at my new home, SVCC. T here are many changes ahead for Workforce Development at SVCC. We are committed to developing relevant, stackable credentials for our customers. Through increased collaboration with Workforce Innovation and Training Act offices and business and industry leaders, our department will put our region on a path toward a better trained workforce. WHAT’S NEW FOR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT snikraH htieK - tnempoleveD ecrofkroW rof weN s’tahW - 5 egaP KEITH HARKINS VICE PRESIDENT Workforce Development and Continuing Education “The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” – STEVE JOBS Our department is well on our way to developing a new Power Line Worker program in collaboration with three large employers in our service area and the Virginia Community College System. We anticipate high demand for both the training itself and our graduates. In addition, we are currently offering a Precision Machining course in cooperation with the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing, the Southside Virginia Education Center, Fort Lee, the Fort Lee Solider for Life Program, 180 Skills, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center, and the Crater Regional Workforce Investment Board. This 10-week program will train veterans who are transitioning out of the military in the high demand area of precision machining. Our students are being interviewed by companies from across the state for employment. Power Line Worker and Precision Machining are the first of several innovative training programs which will be offered by our workforce development office as we look to transition from a credit-based model. Moving forward, SVCC’s workforce development office will work to become the area’s leader in credentialbased training. Attendees at this event were from the Christanna Campus (Alberta), Daniel Campus (Keysville) and Southside Virginia Education Center (Emporia). Our emerging leaders participated in great sessions offered by SVCC administration and staff. student C rystal Jones’ association with Southside Virginia Community College began during her sophomore year of high school with the summer youth program. From the very beginning she was impressed with the SVCC environment and the passion for helping students that was shown by the faculty and other college staff. Upon graduating from high school, she enrolled at SVCC in the secretarial science program. Her instructors showed a passion for teaching and always pushed her to do her very best. Her advisor, Mrs. Henrietta Coleman, became her role model, and it was not long before she realized she also wanted to become a business education instructor. She received her A.A.S. degree in secretarial science in 1978. In 1980, she returned to SVCC as a full-time secretary for the Arts and Sciences Division. From 1981 to 1989, she worked in various positions including secretary for the Continuing Education Division, and fiscal technician. During this time, she decided to pursue the passion for teaching and began taking transfer courses. She received her B.S. degree in Business Education from Longwood College in 1989 and after teaching in the public school system for ten years, she was fortunate to return to SVCC in 1999 as faculty for Administrative Support Technology and Information Technology. In 2004, she received her M.Ed. in Career and Technical Education from Virginia State University. “My greatest reward in my career is witnessing the success stories of the students I advise and teach. It is such a pleasure to help the students to realize their full potential and to aid them in reaching that potential. I am the second of three siblings to graduate from SVCC. Each of us has now received master’s degrees—two are educators and one works for the federal government. Living in a small rural area, Southside afforded us the opportunity to complete the first two years of our post-secondary education while living at home and to continue on to receive advanced degrees. Even today, Mrs. Coleman continues to be a great mentor,” Jones said. D uring the day, Jeffrey Pillow worked full-time in construction, five years removed from RandolphHenry High School. At night, he was a part-time student at Southside Virginia Community College enrolled in an Anatomy and Physiology course taught by Lisa Dunn-Back. It was here he began a journey that would lead him to the University of Virginia. Now a marketing-communications and outreach project manager in the health care industry, he thinks back fondly of his time at Southside and understands how much his life’s course changed just by stepping foot onto the John H. Daniel campus in Keysville that day all those years ago. After a year of part-time coursework, Pillow enrolled full-time at Southside, where he would go on to earn a 3.9 GPA and be nominated for the USA Today All-USA Academic Team, Phi Theta Kappa All-Virginia Academic Team, and traveled to Richmond as the VCCS Ambassador to the State Legislature. “Something else that excited me about Southside is that they had a basketball team now and a newly constructed gym,“ he said. As a member of the Southside men’s basketball team, Pillow would go on to be honored with two MVP awards and be selected to the All-State First Team and All-Tournament Team. Encouraged by Dunn-Back, Pillow applied and got into the University of Virginia, where he was chosen as a member of the Rainey Academic Program for a select group of incoming students. Jeffrey would go on to excel at the University of Virginia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature, in the spring of 2008, with a major GPA of 3.65. “Southside opened so many doors I thought were previously closed to me. If I could convey one thing to prospective students considering Southside, it would be this: treat your local community college as the resource it is. It can be a stepping stone to a four-year college or a career in a field you want to pursue and it can also be a second chance,” he said. Jeffrey Pillow currently lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his wife and two children. In addition to his position as a project manager in the health care industry, he recently began his own web development and design company. In 2010, he started the Jeremiah Hamlett Memorial Scholarship Fund to financially assist academically eligible students attending Southside Virginia Community College.
