The words above are alll around us, part of our daily conversations, and
now we’d like to take them into the home. At the very least we’d like to
do no harm, but really, the goal would be to make things better.
Caravane’s been picking up on this ethos, stronger than a passing trend,
an everyday reflex we need to develop for a better lifestyle at home
and globally.
How can this be expressed in the home? The textiles that surround us
don’t all leave equal traces, furniture and objects can be produced by
machines or manually, with toxic or non toxic products, they can be recycled or recyclable, or then can clutter up the planet for centuries
An organic home is utopian for now, but Caravane is trying, little by little,
step by step to tick at least one of the boxes we’ve defined whenever a
new product comes into our shops.

Caravane started out with sofas :
they’re usually the pivotal piece in
our living rooms.
That’s why we’ve worked on the
way they’re built, and will now offer an eco-friendly alternative for
most lines ofCaravane sofas and
beds toour clients who prefer it,
using natural and recycled components :

wooden pegs and screws, and polished withlinseed oil and lac. It is designed to
be solid, durable, vesatile and light.
Fabrics
natural
Fibres can be naturally organic, or they can
be grown that way. We prefer naturan fibres in any case, but even cotton , when
farmed intensively requires toxic pesticides,
fertilizers, and inordinate amounts of water.
Flax, on the other hand has a clean ecological slate : growing it requires a fraction of
the phytosanitary products cotton does.
Extracting linen fiber is a natural process,
decomposition - no energy or solvents are
necessary. Added to that the culture of flax doesn’t exhaust soil resources and
encourages crop rotations. No waste is produced as every part of the plant is
used.
Of all natural fibres, linen is the easiest to dye, using up less chemicals.
Two main Caravane fabric collections are 100% linen : Luni and Lin Sauvage
Curtains
Caravane has a wide range of ready to hang curtains in natural fibres.

Rugs
natural handmade
Moroccan Berber rugs were neglected for years, but are now
avidly collected. Handwoven
exclusively by women these
rugs are manuscripts, recording
daily events, laden with signs
and symbols, a reflection of village life and spiritual beliefs.
They are woven from the wool
of free-grazing sheep. The silkiest rugs are made from liveshorn wool.
« Boucharouite » rag rugs from
the tribal villages of Morocco
recycled hand made
These small knotted and woven rugs are made with all kinds of reclaimed textiles by
young women in the Moroccan countryside.
Fathers and brothers provide scraps of fabric
picked up from textile factories or caftan tailors’ workshops. The families’ old clothes are
also a precious resource - shreds from old
T shirts, djellabas, nylon, rayon, coton are all
recycled in this pontaneous creative process,
with a joyfil, exuberant, free result.
Important rug dealers now acknowledge and
pursue these naive treasures, sending agents scouring through the countryside to ferret out youn rag rug virtuosi.
These sturdy, easy care(washable with soap and water) little miracles are grat as rugs,
throws or wallhangings.

Rock-salt lamps by Best Before
Salt is a crystalline mineral of modest origins, a basic staple of life and an inexhaustible resource. Best Before’s workshops in Poland are near a centuries-old
salt mine. These lamps are hand-carved
and shed a softly glowing light.

Knotting yarn made from rolled-up recycled paper
has long been a national pastime in south Korea, but
now this age-old craft is a national treasure.
Every last scrap of used paper is recycled, cut into
strips, rolled into string and knotted into shape. Only
the hands are used, neither knitting needles nor crochet hooks are needed.

Bedrooms
In all the other rooms in the house, we try to

Parfum de sieste
Made from organic essential oils
Scent designer Barnabé Fillion’s work is a celebration of the olfactive sense, an invitation to travel
with Caravane through the finest perfumery techniques to create an authentic and individual organic scent.
What really counts is not only that the scent is organic, it’s also the evocation of nature it reveals in its
wake.
-We selected natural materials for their exceptional
aromatic and organic qualities from small-scale
producers passionate about their work.
-Parfum de Sieste has a concentration of over 30%
of essential oils (like the first scents ever developped), in organic alcohol.
-With no artificial colouring or synthetic compounds, it’s fine to use in the home as well as
on your skin
-The wake :
*top note : grapefruit , incense, lavender, angelica, a punchy cocktail almost akin to
amber.
*middle note : mastic, cardamom, bergamot, cist from Andalucia : a combination of
fresh citrus and gentle warmth - a conversation between travels and home.
*base note : incense, myrrh, cist from Andalucia , cedar from the Atlas range: a herbal
scent, fur ,slightly animal, with a woody note in the background.
