Tire Rack Street Survival®, a national non-profit teen driving program, teaches
teens skills that will help them to stay alive behind the wheel. Unlike traditional driver
education programs based on classroom theory and simple vehicle maneuvers, the Tire Rack
Street Survival program improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in realworld driving situations. Teenagers learn from knowledgeable enthusiast driving coaches how
their actions govern a car’s responses, what the limits of their vehicles are and how to avoid
accidents entirely.
Working with regional members of the BMW Car Club of America, Sports Car Club of
America and other like-minded enthusiast organizations, Tire Rack Street Survival utilizes
local enthusiast volunteers to support a program that in 2010 will result in more than 85
days of instruction across the country.

SUMMER OR
ALL-SEASON TIRES?
Summer tires are designed to provide traction
and performance on dry and wet roads through
spring, summer and fall, however they are not
intended to be used in winter’s cold snow or on
ice. Conversely, the all-season tread designs
and compounds that remain more flexible in cold
weather to provide year-round capability typically
sacrifice some dry and wet road performance to
provide light snow traction. Our customers have
found dedicated winter tires to be desirable if you
have to drive in snow for much of the winter even
if you normally use all-season tires.

WE USUALLY TEST
CORNERING G S ...
First-hand experience and extensive training allow our sales specialists to provide
expert product recommendations based on how, what and where you drive.
We make certain our team members experience as many of the products we sell as possible. Each year they
participate in over 15 Ride & Drive test sessions, allowing them to compare at least 60 different products —
more in one testing season than most people experience in a lifetime of driving.
Our tests allow our sales specialists to experience each of the products in a short period of time, giving
them a real back-to-back comparison under controlled conditions. To keep the evaluations consistent we
use identical vehicles (except for color), the same Real World Road Ride route and the same Performance Test
Track course. During each evaluation, the only things that really change are the products we are testing.

REAL WORLD ROAD RIDES
Our 6.6-mile Real World Road Ride loop allows our
team to experience ride, noise and light handling
qualities across the variety of conditions our
customers drive on every day. We include two-lane
roads, four-lane roads and expressways, as well as
surfaces that include chipped stone in tar (rough
and irregular), asphalt (some very smooth areas
while others are patched) and concrete (complete
with expansion joints and some studded tire wear).
The vehicle conditions that would affect the results
are kept to a minimum with the radio off, windows
up and climate control fan on its lowest setting.
This allows us to focus on each product’s contribution to ride, noise and light handling qualities
without unnecessary distractions.
PERFORMANCE TEST TRACK DRIVES
Our purpose-built test track located adjacent to our South Bend headquarters allows our team to find
out how each product behaves under the extremes of emergency situations on the road. The test track is
dedicated to testing during the week while car clubs use it for autocross competition on weekends. However
since it is never used as a parking lot, parked vehicles don’t create isolated slick spots by dripping gas, oil
and antifreeze. Our team members run multiple laps of our test course to challenge the car’s steering response,
handling, braking and cornering capabilities and we time selected track segments to quantify the product’s
contribution to the vehicle’s handling and maximum cornering capability.
PANIC STOPPING TESTS
Life seldom depends on how fast you go but how well you stop really can make a difference. And while
today’s four-wheel disc and anti-lock braking systems often get the majority of praise, it’s really the tires
that convert those system’s abilities into actual stopping distances. To evaluate the contribution tires make,
we conduct straight-line braking tests to accurately measure panic stopping distances. We stabilize the speed
at 50 miles per hour and hit the brakes hard enough to engage the anti-lock braking system and bring the
vehicle to a complete stop. We run multiple stops on each tire and use a brake performance analyzer to
quantify the data and determine average stopping distances.
DRY AND WET ROAD CONDITIONS
Many of today’s tires deliver similar dry weather handling and performance, but the real tie-breaker can be
when the roads are made slippery by a rain shower. Our test track features a sprinkler system that allows us
to evaluate traction, handling and braking distances under consistent wet road conditions. We also test tires
in the snow when Mother Nature obliges and on the ice of a hockey rink.
SHARING WHAT WE’VE LEARNED
Following every Ride & Drive, our team’s evaluation of each product’s comfort and performance
is scored on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the highest. Additionally, each driver’s lap
times during the Performance Track Drive are recorded with a competition lap timer and
the fastest laps are averaged to help quantify the tire’s performance capabilities
on the track. We have found that our team’s driving experience and insight
reflects that of our customers. They are a combination of racers,
autocrossers and enthusiasts whose evaluations provide an
excellent overview of the variety of products we test. After all,
experience really is the best teacher.

While tires are occasionally referred to as simply
round and black, fuel costs and growing environmental
concerns have created interest in tires that are leaner
and greener.
With the Goodyear Integrity tire serving as our
baseline, we found the low rolling resistance tires
could equal or improve the fuel economy. The
Michelin Energy Saver A/S lived up to its name at
the top of our list and, as expected, the Goodyear
Assurance ComforTred, which was included in the
test to represent tires that don’t emphasize low
rolling resistance, trailed the pack.

We then determined each tire’s cornering
traction by driving the Prius in both directions
around a 200-foot diameter circle on our
track’s skidpad. Cornering in dry conditions,
the Goodyear Integrity tire again led the pack
with .804 g, however all of the other tires were
close, with their cornering forces ranging from
.798 g to .743 g averages.

Our fuel economy run was comprised of laps around
a 6.6-mile loop of expressways, state highways
and county roads. Each tire was driven over 550
total miles to assess its contribution to vehicle fuel
economy. Since subtle differences in tire dimensions could mislead the vehicles’ onboard energy
monitors, we used Linear-Logic ScanGage IIs to
verify fuel consumption while Race Technology
GPS data loggers recorded speeds and distances.

Tire Rack put these new eco-friendly tires to the
test by measuring miles per gallon on the road
and performance g forces on the track. We chose
the popular 2009 Toyota Prius hybrids as our test
vehicles. Pre-test maintenance included aligning
their wheels and inflating the tires to the vehicle
manufacturer’s specifications.

the Goodyear Integrity tire led the pack with all
of the other tires close behind. In the wet, the
Bridgestone Ecopia EP100 claimed the top spot
and was followed closely by all of the other
aftermarket tires that ranged from 105.2 to
112.5 feet. However the baseline Integrity tire
was separated from the pack when it averaged
131.8 foot stopping distances.

This was addressed in North America last summer
when five new fuel-efficient replacement tire lines
were introduced, each one promising it could
reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions without reducing wet and dry traction.
Cornering in wet conditions, the Michelin
HydroEdge Green X claimed the top spot with a
.677 g average, followed closely by all of the
aftermarket tires. However the baseline Goodyear
Integrity tire again followed the pack with the
lowest wet cornering capability.
Next we wanted to see if maximizing miles per
gallon meant trading off traction.
Tires have always made important contributions
to vehicle handling, traction and comfort and
shouldn’t be thought of as simply round and
black. And as this test confirmed, these new low
rolling resistance tires are not only leaner and
greener, they also kept their promise of reducing
fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions
without reducing traction.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION
Maintaining the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure is the single-most important
thing you can do to protect your tire investment.
Improper inflation pressures can cause uneven tire
wear, upset vehicle handling and reduce fuel
economy, as well as lead to permanent internal
damage. Most of today’s tire pressure monitoring
systems (TPMS) will not warn a driver until tire
pressures are 25% below what’s recommended.
Therefore at least once a month, drivers still
need to check tire pressure first thing in the
morning before driving.

Your vehicle’s wheel alignment sets the angles
that your tires come into contact with the road and
influence the way your vehicle drives and how long
your tires last. For example, if the toe setting for a
tire is out of specification by as little as 1/8", that
tire experiences the equivalent of being dragged
sideways more than 26 feet every mile you drive!
Have the alignment checked whenever you install
new tires and annually, as well.

The different demands at each wheel position
cause different tire wear rates. Check your owner’s
manual for the tire rotation pattern recommended
by the vehicle manufacturer. Because tires naturally
wear more quickly when they are new than later on
in their life, doing the first few rotations on time is
essential to optimize tread life and can help prevent
irregular wear from causing noisy tires later. If your
spare tire and wheel match the other four, include
them in every tire rotation to extend the life of your
current tires and allow you to keep matched tires on
the vehicle in the future.

There are potholes everywhere, debris on the roads and plenty of
obstacles to avoid. Properly maintained tires can generally handle the
bumps and scrapes, but inevitably one unforeseen road hazard can leave
you with a tire in need of repair or replacement.
Because of this, many drivers desire the additional
security and peace of mind that a Tire Road Hazard
Service Program provides.
Tire Rack supports the tire manufacturers’ warranties for all of the tire brands that we sell. Those
warranties apply to tires that become unusable for
any reason within the tire manufacturer’s control,
typically covering materials and workmanship.
However, these warranties do not apply to causes
and conditions beyond the tire manufacturer’s
control, such as road hazards.
Road hazard damage occurs when a tire fails as a
result of a puncture, bruise or break incurred during
the course of normal driving on a maintained road.

PROFESSIONAL MOUNT AND BALANCE
Tires and wheels are mounted using state of-the-art, scratch-free mounting machines. Hunter GSP9700
balancing, the most accurate and precise balancing system available is also used. Many dealers charge extra
for this service, but we don’t! Adhesive balancing weights are hidden for the best wheel appearance. The
GSP9700 simulates a road test with a unique load roller that applies up to 1,400 pounds of force against the
rotating assembly. The roller measures the loaded run-out of the assembly (deflection while under load) and
automatically recommends corrections when needed.
Balancing is only a small portion of wheel vibration. The GSP9700 tests each wheel for excessive lateral and
radial run-out before it is used. If the tire/wheel assembly never came in contact with the road, then simple
balancing would be sufficient. A square wheel can be balanced, but it will not give a smooth, vibration-free ride.

• Lug Nuts or Lug Bolts If your wheel purchase requires special lug hardware we include it at no
charge. Most wheels are provided with lug hardware but some applications are designed to use your
Original Equipment lug hardware. McGard locking lug hardware is available for most applications for
a small additional cost (call to order).
• Centering Rings If a centering ring is required to properly fit the wheels on your car then they are
provided free of charge.
• Valve Stems Included with all Tire & Wheel Package purchases. Many other dealers charge
$1 to $3 each for rubber valve stems.

What if Your Vehicle has a
T IRE PRESSURE
MONITORING
SYSTEM?
Maintaining the correct tire pressure for a vehicle
is the variable in how much load its tires can safely
carry. The correct pressure will carry the weight
without a problem. Too little tire pressure will
eventually cause tire failure. It’s been estimated
that about 25% of vehicles on the road are
running on underinflated tires. Attempts from auto
manufacturers to counteract the lack of inflation
have resulted in two common systems: direct and
indirect tire pressure monitoring.
Indirect systems use the vehicle’s antilock braking
system’s wheel speed sensors to compare the
rotational speed of one tire versus the others. If
a tire is low on pressure, it will roll at a different
number of revolutions per mile than the other three
and alert the vehicle’s onboard computer.

STOPPING POWER
The reassuring feeling a driver gets when applying
the brakes from moderate to high speeds is the
driver’s measure of stopping power. Higher scores
equal greater than O.E. stopping power.
LOW NOISE
Modern brake pads and caliper systems are engineered with several different features to reduce brake
squeal. Brake pads with higher scores in this
category have these features and perform with
little to no brake noise when installed properly.
LOW DUST
While all brake pad friction material generates dust
as it stops a vehicle, some brake pads produce more
visible dust than others. Generally, a pad with higher
friction levels and operating temperature range will
produce higher dust levels. Pads that produce
lower amounts of dust will receive the highest
scores in this category.
WARNING: BRAKES ARE A SAFETY-CRITICAL PART OF A MOTOR VEHICLE
Brake components should be installed by a competent mechanic in a professional manner. Any incorrect installation of
brake components can cause a major safety problem or an accident. If you are not a competent, qualified mechanic you
should not attempt to install these products, but should take the vehicle to a vehicle dealer or competent automotive
mechanic for their installation. In some cases, servicing or replacing brake hardware at the time of rotor installation may
also be required. Brake rotors are wear items and as such, should be inspected regularly and replaced as necessary.
Street and Highway Use: Brake pads should typically be replaced when approximately 1/8" to 3/16" of friction material
remains on the steel backing plate. Brake rotors should be replaced before their thickness has reached the prescribed
“Worn Rotor Minimum Thickness” limit (expressed in mm) engraved on the edge of the brake disc. Plain rotors may be
turned on a brake lathe to remove scoring and to true the disc surfaces until this minimum thickness has been reached.
Drilled and slotted rotors may not be able to be turned and should be replaced if they become scored.
Track and Competition Use: Due to the extremes of heat and pressure encountered by brake systems used for track and competition
applications, all brake system components (pads, rotors, calipers, lines, hardware and fluid) must be compatible and should be
inspected between sessions. Brake pads and rotors should be replaced before they reach the wear limits described above.

HEAT CYCLING
New DOT-legal competition tires require a break-in period to achieve maximum
performance and durability. Running new tires through an easy heat cycle first
and allowing them to relax (24 to 48 hours) allows the rubber bonds to relink
in a more uniform manner than they were originally. Tire Rack’s heat cycling
procedure turns a tire against three rollers for 10 to 15 minutes. All of the heat
generated as the tire turns is the result of deflecting (stretching) the tire within
its normal operating range. There is no “artificial” heat added.
SHAVING TIRES
Tire shaving is an effective means of permitting more of a tire’s performance
capability to be realized early in its life. Tire shaving removes tread rubber and
reduces tire weight by several pounds. A shaved tire’s tread profile will usually
result in a slight increase in the width of the tire’s contact patch putting a little
more rubber on the road. The resulting shallower tread depth reduces the
tire’s slip angle, increases its responsiveness and helps stabilize its cornering
power by minimizing tread block squirm. In many cases, shaved tires used in
competition actually have a longer useful life than tires that begin being run at
full tread depth.

NATIONAL SOLO PROGRAM
The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) offers one
of the most accessible and cost-effective ways
to experience the thrill of strapping on a helmet,
buckling your seatbelt and competing in a vehicle.
The SCCA Solo program separates cars into classes
based on their performance potential and allows
driving enthusiasts to participate in over 1,500 local
events across the country.
Solo or autocross competition allows drivers to run
one at a time against the clock (hence the term
"Solo") on courses typically defined by traffic cones
in a large, open, controlled, paved area, i.e. a parking
lot. Since the risks are relatively low and maximum
speeds are those of normal highway driving, Solo is
an excellent way for drivers to safely refine their
skill at the limit of their vehicle’s performance.
The 2010 season marks Tire Rack’s 16th year as
the title sponsor of the National SCCA Solo program.

Tour brings larger National Tour and ProSolo
events to venues around the country that give

local members a chance to pit their skills against
other drivers from their region, as well as national
competitors. The National SCCA Solo series events
focus on “Tire Rack SCCA Championship Road
to Lincoln” and the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National
Championship and Tire Rack ProSolo National
Championship held at the Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln,
Nebraska a 60 acre site that is perfect for hosting
the World’s Largest Motorsports Championships.
Supporting the Tire Rack SCCA National Solo
Program is the Divisional Championship program
and the addition of the Eastern/Western States
Championship, designed to further support
the drive towards the year-end championship
events in Lincoln. As an additional enhancement,
the SCCA has also instituted the Triple Crown
award to recognize competitors who win a
Divisional Championship, Eastern/Western States
Championship and National Championship all in the
same year.

Sanctioned by the BMW Car Club of America, this
door-to-door racing series takes place at the
most challenging racetracks across the country
and is open to BMWs that have the proper safety
modifications for competition. By running under
vintage racing rules that penalize overly aggressive
driving, the club attempts to minimize the risk of
vehicle damage normally associated with track
racing. Under these rules, any single or multi-car
incident that involves damage can result in
exclusion from the event, a probationary period or
suspension of racing privileges for an extended
period of time.
The 2010 Tire Rack BMW CCA Club Racing Series
continues the dynamic growth of this program, now
in its 12th year, with over 30 series events planned
across the U.S. and Canada with over 800 licensed
racers involved.

2010 TIRE RACK CANNONBALL ONE LAP OF AMERICA
Tire Rack One Lap of America is eight days of competition featuring some of the fastest street-legal cars on a
number of America’s most challenging racetracks! The 2010 Tire Rack One Lap of America is the 27th edition
of Brock Yates’ extreme challenge for driving enthusiasts. This year’s event will test the endurance of the
vehicles and their drivers as they transit for almost 3,400 miles from venue to venue at legal speeds, while
measuring their performance during skidpad and autocross competition, as well as drag, oval and open track
road racing.
The 2010 event will begin at Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana with registration on Friday, April 30th.
Competition starts that evening at 5 p.m. when Tire Rack will host the One Lap of America competitors to a
“Wet Skid Pad Shootout”. Finishing positions in the Wet Skid Pad Shootout are awarded by measuring and
averaging the maximum cornering forces each vehicle generated while driving laps in both directions on the
test track’s 200' diameter wet skid pad.
Competitors will begin their week-long trek stopping off at many of America’s premier racetracks for timed
competition, including visits to the Daytona International Speedway and Sebring International Raceway. They
will return to Tire Rack for the final competitive event on Saturday morning, May 8th, from 9:00 AM until noon,
for a Dry Skid Pad Shootout (with Mother Nature’s cooperation). The “Dry Skid Pad Shootout” will be followed
by the now infamous victory tire burnout celebration and awards.
Spectators are welcome to visit Tire Rack in South Bend, Indiana to see the cars during their final preparation
while they are completing registration and to watch both skidpad events. Admission and parking are free.
