cruising up tbe Intracoastal WateruaJ/ from Jacksonaille, Florida to
Harbour Toune Marina, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Jim
Wells and I are bringing Dr. Dorsey's Westsail 42, WHITE WINE;
Skip Fry and Ruth Creighton are aboard KYLIE, Ruth and Bob's
westsail 32 (they are about an bour behind us right now) up the
Soutbeast seaboard, presentirtg "Cruising Conoersations" and my
lectuve "Cruising Woman" and offering open boats witb sailing
demonstrations to all interested, It's quite an aduenture and ue batse
b e e n m e t w i t b a l o t o f h e l p a n d e n t h u s i a s m .B e i n g 1 O t o 1 2 b o u r s i n
tbe tropical sun has presented good material for this article, I hope
you find it belpful.
PROTECTION FROM THE SUN
U s e a g o o d s u n t a n l o t i o n o r a p r e v e n t a t i v es u n s c r e e n .N o t i c e I
did not recommend a suntan oil, because it will only fry your skin
instead of sauteeing it to a golden brown. Pre-Sun is one of the best
prepared sun screens on the market but should be applied at least
15 minutes to % hour before going in the sun to be completely effective, It is a bit expensive, but it lasts quite a while when used
sparingly. If you are cruising on a stringenr budget, as I usually am,
you can make your own sun screen that is equally protective, I{ere
are two receipes that I have tried, I used, and they work! One is a
clear solution and the other one takes the form of a lotion.
A t a p h a r m a c y p u r c h a s ea c a n o f P A B A - P a r A m i n o B e n z o i c
Acid. It comes in a powder form; it is very inexpensive. Be careful
not to get sun scrcen or PABA mixture on your clothing because
it will stain.
SUN SCREEN NO. L4dd 5o/oPABA to 95% Vaseline Intensiue
Care Lotion and mix uell, (Best done in a bowl to assurecomplete
mixture. PABA is 50/oby aeigbt, takes quite a bit of powder.) Use a
16 oz, bottle VaselineIntensiue Care Lotion, % oz. PABA powder,
SUN SCREEN NO,2 Add 5% PABA, 25% alcobol, 7oo/o
glycerine.
Sbake well before each dpplication.
When in the sun initially it's a good practice to add'vitamins A
and D, taken together, to your diet, They will help your body and
skin absorb the sun. Also give those areas of your skin that haven't
seen the sunlight in a while special care and protection such as your
f e e t , e a r s ,b a c k o f y o u r n e c k , e r c . , . I f y o u r n e w b i k i n i h a s a d i f ferent cut than last year take care with the newly exposed areas,
b e c a u s et h e e d g e sh u r t w h e n b u r n e d .
A sun hat or a visor is a must. It not only protects your face but
cuts down the glare and keeps your hair from drying out and breaking. Good polarized sun glassesare also important, for the glare from
the water, deck, sky, and sails can be damaging to sensitive eyes. It
i s a g o o d p r a c t i c et o h a v ea n e x t r a p a i r .
I recommend a sunstick or zinc oxide for vour lios. Sunburned
lips are no fun and rather unattractive. Try to find a iunstick with a
sun screenalready in it, If your lips become burned, put a dampened
tea bag on them to reduce the burn's swelling. Amertan, a lotion
that has a tonic acid base,will do the same thing,

he keeps out of the sun, Wash his skin down with vinegar and coat
carefully with a soothing lotion such as Nivea, Vaseline Intensive
Care, or Noxema. Give him lots of liquids and vitamins A and D.
Severe sunburn is naturally very painful, but it can also lead to heat
postration, sun-stroke, and dehydration.
