Art Happens Here | March/April, 2016
Dear Members,
The new year always refreshes our creative energy, and the
staff and board of directors are excited to realize this year’s
projects with such an engaged community.
As you will read in the pages ahead, our exhibits, theatre,
arts education and event schedules are underway and set
to define another extraordinary year—to include welcoming
a new Exhibits Director this summer, as we celebrate Mary
Puller’s retirement and her incredible impact on the
exhibits program.
We continue to advance as a community arts leader as
well. DAC has been approved to administer a $10,000 City
of Durango Block Grant, which restores local public
funding to cultural nonprofits for the first time since the
Great Recession.
DAC is also a lead partner in our community’s Arts &
Economic Prosperity survey, conducted by Americans for
the Arts every four years. The results are a powerful
advocacy tool in quantifying arts and cultural nonprofits as
true economic drivers—creating an industry that supports
jobs, generates government revenue and enhances our
tourism industry. We look forward to sharing the results
with you in 2017!
I will close with tremendous appreciation for and
recognition of our recently transitioned board members:
Allison Andersen (past Secretary), Ginny Davis, PhD
(past Vice President), Margie Deane Gray (past Chair,
Development Committee) and Tim Kapustka (past
President). Their collective expertise and passion for our
mission were a guiding force over the past three years.
The Durango Arts Center is continually strengthened
by our dedicated board of directors, our talented artists
and our engaged community members who inspire and
guide our work, and for that we are grateful.
STAFF TRANSITIONS
After three years of contributing significantly to DAC’s
communications strategy, community profile and overall
program success as Marketing Coordinator, DAC bid
farewell to Elsa Jagniecki in February.

We are excited to announce the addition of Schoolhouse Rock

A Season of Appreciation
Special thanks to First national Bank of Durango for
sponsorship of the annual Winter Solstice Artisan Market,
held in the Barbara Conrad gallery throughout the month
of December. The work of 61 artists attracted record
sales, with handcrafted items proving especially popular
for holiday gift giving. Thank you to the tremendous crew
of Winter Solstice volunteers who assisted in making the
Market a success.
Each month the DAC Docents, together with teaching
artist, Denna Carney, host clients from Community
Connections in the “Creative Minds” program for a tour of
the the Barbara Conrad gallery followed by a hands-on art
lesson. This incredibly grace-filled program receives
generous support from the Walmart Foundation and the La
Plata Electric Association RoundUp Foundation.
The La Plata Electric Association Round-Up
Foundation is a community program funded by LPEA
members. it derives its funding when members sign-up
to “round-up” their electric bills each month to the next
higher dollar. Through the Round-Up Foundation more
than $1million in local grants has been distributed to
nonprofit organizations and agencies in La Plata and
Archuleta counties. Sign up today and “round-up”.
The Durango Arts Center extends it sincere appreciation
to Alpine Bank for the wildly popular Experience it! contest.
Opportunities to enter the drawing were highlighted at
each of the 2015 DAC theatre productions. The December
drawing for the Experience it! prize (4 tickets to a 2016
Denver Broncos game, $1,000 Alpine Bank gift Card and a
$1,000 donation to a local charity) was won by Susan and
Reg Hopper, audience members at Always, Patsy Cline. The
Hopper’s generously donated a portion of their prize to
DAC in support of the children’s performing arts program.
DAC is especially pleased to celebrate Alpine Bank as
the 2016 theatre season lead sponsor. Come out and
experience theatre at DAC!
The incredible 2016 exhibit season began with the
opening of The White Season, curated by Mary Ellen Long
and featuring her work alongside that of Sandra Butler,
Charlene geiss, Andrea Martens, Maureen May, Catherine
nash & Joan K. Russell. Special thanks to Stephen Pease
and David Smiley of Oxford Asset Management whose
generous exhibit support will make a difference throughout
the coming year. The Friends of the Art Library (F.O.A.L.)
January – February exhibit irregularities featuring the
vibrant work of Jen Pack included an artist lecture, thanks
to underwriting support provided STiTCH.
Making Art Happen 24/7
DAC was thrilled to participate in its first ever Colorado gives
Day in December. Thank you to the individuals who joined in
support of community arts programming at DAC by making a
donation. Throughout the year, DAC will maintain a presence on
the Coloradogives.org website, making it safe and simple for
donors to contribute to year-round, 24/7. DAC’s profile page
highlights programs and activities, with comprehensive
organizational and financial background provided to inform
donors.
