W
elcome to the new Loud
Pedal! Jill and I are pleased
to be taking on this great
responsibility
and
wonderful
opportunity to keep this publication
worthy of Oregon Region.
The very first thing I want to do is to
acknowledge the truly excellent work
done on the Loud Pedal over the last
five years by Doug Berger. Doug set
a very high standard for quality and
professionalism, and anything this
magazine becomes in the future owes
a great deal to Doug’s dedication and
“We need
your help, your
input, and your
feedback”
hard work. We intend to do our best to
live up to that standard, and bring some
of our own ideas into the publication as
well.
You will notice a few changes in
this issue, and there will be more to
come as we learn our way around the
publishing tools, the deadlines, and
the blood-chilling process of extracting
columns from your elected leadership.
The first and most obvious change is
to the look and feel of the magazine.
I wish I could take all the credit, but
Bob Brands and Travis Andrews at
Community Newspapers have really
gone the extra mile to provide me the
tools to create this new look. But there’s
more than just a new look...
We intend to publish cartoons, and
you will find the first one in this issue.
Bob Mead drew great cartoons that
were printed years ago, and I intend to

reprint every one I can find. If anyone out
there is a budding cartoonist - send me
some samples and if they are any good,
you will see them here. This feature is
tentatively called “Laugh Track.”
Another new feature to look for is what
we might call “Vintage Loud Pedal.” We
have a wealth of history in this club,
and it is our intention to reprint classic
items from old Loud Pedals whenever
we can find them. If you have old Loud
Pedals with funny, happy, sad, glorious,
or just interesting photos, articles,
advertisements, or anything, send them
along.
We also want to encourage each of you
to consider writing for this magazine.
You do not have to commit to a regular
column - just shoot us your articles and
look for them here. There is an excellent
article in this issue by Jack Spring. I’d
like to have some articles from drivers,
workers, and crew. I know there’s a lot
LOUD PEDAL
of knowledge out there about car setup
and tuning. We’re going to try to revive
the member profiles as well.
We also need your photos. Photos of
people, cars, anything related to Oregon
Region SCCA. We’ll take a hint from
Easy Rider magazine- If it’s of interest to
Oregon Region members, we’ll print it!
So, with all this new content, something’s
got to give, or we’ll bankrupt the club
with postage charges. Well, here’s what
I’m wondering - should we stop printing
event results in the Loud Pedal? I’ve
asked around a little bit, and it seems as
though most folks pick up their results at
the track, or read them on the website.
Results are typically up on the website
48 hours after the completion of an
event, and sometimes take weeks to
arrive in this magazine. Our season
finale club racing results are printed in
this issue, but I’d like to hear from you
if you depend on the Loud Pedal for
your results. Write or call me at home
or Karen at the region office if you care
about this. We don’t have to make a
decision until March.
In closing, we’re looking forward to a
great time producing the Loud Pedal, but
we need your help, your input, and your
“Should we stop

feedback. This is your magazine, and
I want to offer you material to increase
your enjoyment and involvement with
your club.

MINUTES APPROVAL - Minutes were corrected and
approved (Dave/Matt) M/P
MEMBER COMMENTS NEW BUSINESS COMMITTEE & DIRECTOR REPORTS:
REGIONAL OFFICE OFFICE STAFF & HOURS
* Hours billed in July were 119.5, compared to a
forecast of 150.
* Anticipate about 125 contract hours in August.
OFFICE EQUIPMENT
* Office computer has been repaired by Jeff Z. & Don
S. Thank you! The Word program is working again.
* Race Ops Managers purchased a new copier for use
by Race Center. The old copier, formerly used at the
office, is more expensive to repair than to replace.
TRANSPONDERS
* The current office inventory of transponders is: 6
hardwire, 2 rechargeable.
* Are now ordering smaller quantities as we have only
one race remaining this year.
ROSE CUP SHIRTS
* Gave final shirt order to PRFA today for drivers who
did not get their entries in by the shirt deadline (which
was earlier than the race entry deadline).
* If we give shirts with race entries next year, I have
some recommendations for handling that chore.
JULY RACE
* We netted the following entries at our July race: 125
double regional, 22 second entries, 8 single regional,
total 155.
* In addition to the above, NASPORT had 13 entries.
MEMBERSHIP
* Total membership as of June 28 printout from
National = 1650 active members.
* Have not updated our database with the latest
information from National. There appears to be a
bug in the data. Have asked Don S. to investigate with
his program.
MULTI-EVENT WAIVER PROGRAM
* Would like permission from the Board to investigate
the possibility of Oregon Region implementing an
“annual waiver” program for the year 2003. This
would apply to current SCCA members who have been
licensed as a driver or official or crew for at least one
year prior and who are 18 years of age or older.
* Have received information from Linda Rogaski,
National Registration Administrator, regarding
this system and would continue to work with her
to determine if this is a viable option for Oregon
Region.
Page

INSURANCE
* The office is currently without insurance. We
received a quote & a binder from State Farm to cover
only the office, no vehicles. State Farm subsequently
decided not to insure us as they do not offer coverage
to car clubs. They returned the $175 we paid.
* It is a requirement of our lease that we have a
$1,000,000 liability insurance policy naming the
landlord and property management company as
additional insureds.
I have discussed this problem with the property
management company and they are satisfied that we
are still trying to obtain insurance.
Discussion followed on Multi-Event Waiver
Program (see above) M/S (Jeff/Cheryl) M/P to
have Karen investigate the possibility of using this
process in our region.
TREASURER’S REPORT - In Gary’s absence Dave
provided an update that Gary had prepared.
Of note is that Simon Levear from the Rally Group
has still not received the tax id information that he
needs to supply to the bank for their account.
LOUD PEDAL - Absent
Karen has had inquiries as to the Loud Pedal
advertising rates. This has been discussed in the
past and upon further discussion tonight it was
suggested that the rates be increased by 50% to
offset the loss that we are currently experiencing for
the publication. M/S (Dave/Cheryl)
Vote

5 yes 1 no 2 abstain M/P
Jeff commented that in the last issue, which had
thirty eight pages, eighteen of those pages were
devoted to points and results. He advised that
perhaps we would like to look at not printing these
in the LP in the future, thus saving time, money and
space. They are very dated by the time they are
published and can be readily obtained shortly after
any event on the web site in a more timely manner.
This suggestion will be passed on to some of the
members for their comments as well.
Holly advised Jeff that she had only one comment
for the region web site.....IT ROCKS!
RACE OPS - No report
DIRECTORS REPORTS:
SOLO II - Chuck introduced Doug Barrett whom
is a candidate for the Solo II Director position this
next year.
The July event saw them with a practice day on
Saturday and then on Sunday they ran their regular
event with 125-130 entries.
The August 3 & 4 event hosted 125 on Saturday and
111 on Sunday. The weather proved a factor on the
Sunday attendance.
They Solo group is looking forward to The All Club
Party and the joining together of the groups.
RALLY - Matt reported that last week the Rally X at
the Columbia County Fairgrounds drew 90 entrants
for a day of fun.
The next Rally X will be 9/1 at The Hood River
Fairgrounds in O’Dell.
The Wild West Performance Rally will be held 9/7-8
in Shelton (by Olympia). Volunteers are needed.
September 10-11 will be the Road Rally, The Road
Not Taken that will be headquartered at the casino at
Grande Ronde.
The planning is still going on for the October 12-13
event starting in Wilsonville and going to and from
Port Orford.
A West Coast Championship for Club Rally Event for
next year is in discussion mode and Matt will report
back on any developments on this venue.
DIRECTOR 1 - Cheryl advised that she will be
working with the chiefs to obtain a list of dedicated
workers from each of the specialties. These names will
then be made eligible for drawings to be held with paid
banquet dinners as the prizes. This is one other perk
that is being provided by the Worker Fund. Many of
our workers find the cost of a banquet not within their
budget and this will assure that some of them will
be able to attend as well as being rewarded for their
dedication.
DIRECTOR II - Jeff has established a nominating
committee for the upcoming elections and they are:
John Brewer, Mark Schue and Monika Tabor. A
slate of nominees will be presented at the next BOD
meeting.
He also advised that he would like to print the Worker
Incentive Program and it’s dates on the web site. Mary
will provide both he and Karen with this information.
ROAD RACING DIRECTOR - Dave presented a
job description for the new position of, Chief, Race
Workers Services. It is very descriptive and will prove
to be a great asset in recruiting for this job. He has
asked the BOD to critique and respond at the next
meeting on any changes or suggestions.
At the September BOD meeting he will have the
same type of document prepared for the other newly
suggested position of, Assistant Road Race Director.
At this time Dave advised the BOD that he would
not seek re-election next year. Many issues have
contributed to his decision and he feels that it is in his
best interest to move on.
Holly remarked that Dave has been a very hard and
dedicated worker and that she has grown to respect his
ability to get the job done while working under difficult
situations at times.
ASST RE - Ben advised that the Porsche event
was successful even with the shortage of workers.
Jay Culbertson was pleased with the support and
appreciated the professionalism that our workers
presented.
He also mentioned that we need to get a contract
together for TC and the Thunderhill Race.
PAST RE - Greg reminded us of the Doernbecher race
on September 28th.
He also asked if there was any way that the region
could give TC a break on the E Truck rental for the
Thunderhill Race this year. Their budget is stretched
and would truly appreciate our consideration. After a
short discussion the following verbiage was suggested
for a motion:
E Truck for the 2002 Thunderhill Race will be rental
in kind exchange of goods or
services at a future
date M/S (Greg/Dave) M/P
RE COMMENTS - Holly gave a BIG THANK YOU
LOUD PEDAL
October 2002
to Gary Manchester for his thoughtfulness in having
the “RD” stickers created in memory of our friend
Robert Dratwa. These were truly appreciated by all.
She continues to work on the promoter project with
Mark Wiggington and will give all informed of the
results.
Holly advised that we will be working on the
nominations and election as well as the awards for
the end of the year banquet soon. She suggested
that we bear in mind, Item 4.6 of the Oregon Region
Operating Policy when considering awards.
4.6 Recipients of Annual Awards must be Oregon

The
Unexpected
Utterance
I was cheerfully engaged in an episode
of “Solve The World’s Problems” the
other day, an impromptu meeting of
middle-aged reprobates at work that we
laughingly call a “Service Tech Meeting”.
One of the apocalyptically important
subjects was vacation scheduling. I
had just gleefully informed this bunch of
heroic wrench benders that I had, once
again, blown the summer calendar
asunder with a blitz of three and four
day mini vacations that matched up
with racing dates all the way through
September, and received approval on
all of them.
History has proven that the usual
response to this announcement tends
to be immediate and particularly
dangerous, so I ducked under the
closest cover the room provided…the
desk normally used by our boss. Once
the usually fatal hail of medium sized
hand tools and amazingly bloated
procedure manuals passed overhead
(mauling an antiquated computer
terminal, and a printer that is no longer
capable of printing the letters “e”, “l”
and “p” because of a damaged daisy
wheel), and the remarkably articulate
barrage of rather blue tinged invectives,
I heard the voice of the most senior (as
in “old” and “curmudgeonly”) of the mob
growling “Why do you waste your whole
vacation fooling around with a bunch of
old car nuts and spoiled rich boys when
you don’t even get to drive a car?”.
“Whatever do you mean, sir?” was my
pithy reply.
Pointing an Ebeneezer-like digit
straight at my Romanesque Proboscis
(big nose), Mr. Mean impaled me with
this indisputable factoid, “You admit
that you pay for the chance to go out
there and sweat your butt off, maybe
get it knocked off, and work harder than
you do here, just because you love the
sport and the people. You don’t make
a dime and usually end up more broke
than you started out! What the hell is so
special about those wackos anyway?”
Using my best “You Pitiful Dunce!” tone
of voice, I responded with my standard
lecture for the ignorant. “First, it’s fun
because everyone else is out there for
the same reason, we love racing, and
are all working towards the same goal,
Page
10
to see great racing happen. We set the
place up, run the operation, and provide
the services necessary for people who
can afford to try, to go out and race as
hard as they can while being confident
that we are there to help them as they
hang it all out and go for the win. We
argue and complain, but there is never a
doubt that we want the same goal. And
by the way, Mr. Knowitall, we aren’t just
a bunch of old motor heads. We have
multiple generations of racers spread
throughout the club, from Grandparents
who fought for world freedom to
youngsters just starting to dream of
winning “the big one” some day. And by
the way, we get the job done, and we do
it now, not later, or someday, or maybe
after we do a study on it!”
“Why do you waste your
whole
vacation
fooling
around with a bunch of old
car nuts and spoiled rich
boys when you don’t even get
to drive a car?”
Apparently my intellectual counter punch
was slightly off target. Mr. Growl came
back with his best stuff, designed to stop
all further conversation in a gathering
of over forty-ish blue collars, constantly
bemoaning “the system”. “So, you get
to babysit a bunch of brats. Sounds like
real fun! The kids nowadays are useless.
All they do is spend money, play games,
tell us the world has been trashed by us
old farts, and tell us the future isn’t worth
living long enough to see! Anyone who
thinks these punks are gonna keep the
world going when they get to run things
is an idiot and I’ve never met even one of
them that would put out the kind of work
you say it takes to do that stuff you have
so much fun doing!”
The absurdity of this nearly knocked
me over, considering the fact that this
guy was once a pony-tailed, cycle ridin’,
boozin’ scourge who elicited matronly
wails of despair, and patronly sprints for
the shotgun whenever he showed up to
take someone’s sweet petunia out for the
night (usually clad in home made tie-dye
tank tops and dirty chinos).

Before I could laugh, however, out came
the Unexpected Utterance, without
hesitation, and without mercy.
“You’re full of crap, you damn dinosaur!”
Now, to know me well is to know that
I am no fan of the way humanity has
been running things for the last three
thousand years or so. I still have
serious doubts about how this thing we
call “Human Society” is going to end up,
and I tend to think we are at a place in
time where the answers will be coming
sooner rather than later. And not,
necessarily, for the good of the planet.
It came as a surprise, therefore, when I
realized the change in myself, as “The
Utterance” passed my lips. Not only
do I enjoy the feeling, of being part of
a group of like-minded enthusiasts, so
disparate in origin, yet so devoted to a
goal.
I have also found hope for the future.
In our club I see people who are
successfully raising new generations of
human beings who believe in working
together to accomplish something good.
I see young people who respect the
experience of those who have come
before them, and value that which is
club racing enough to work hard so they
can carry on the legacy for generations
to come. People willing to teach, and
to learn, from all those around them.
Willing to give others a chance to do
new and unusual things, and enjoy the
success of working together as a team.
I choose to take my experiences in the
club as a sign that there is a reason to
believe that we can pull together during
these most difficult times in which we
live, if people will just choose to come
together and work for our common
goal.
Yes, I said all these things to Mr. Mean.
Did I change his mind?
Probably not.
That doesn’t really matter. I realized
that I have changed my own mind. That
is good enough.

Objects In The Mirror
Objects In The Mirror May
Be Closer Than they Appear
By: Dave Isselhard, Road Racing Director
email: [email protected]
The Oregon Region final Road Racing
Event of the year, our September Single
Regional is now in the Mirror. What a
great weekend! The best weather of the
year: Sunshine and a cool breeze. Most
everyone was on their best behavior.
With the Run-Offs the same weekend at
Mid-Ohio we still had 169 Entrants. We
had Road Racing, Rally and Solo 2 at
the same location and all in one day—
followed by a great All-Club Party.
In the Mark 1 Racing Paddock, Crew
Chief Russ Newhouse and the Mark
1 Racing Team somehow managed to
completely disassemble my #07 Formula
Super Vee, replace the oil filler tower
(which was cracked in the Saturday
morning practice), reassemble the car
and with two (2) minutes to go put me on
the grid for Saturday’s Qualifying. The oil
filler tower forms the front motor mount
and removal and replacement requires
that the car be literally separated into
two sections and reassembled. By the
way, that component, the oil filler tower is
no longer available from a parts house.
They had to find the part in a scrap
yard! While the crew was doing this,
they simultaneously “prepped” Russ’s
#06 Formula Super Vee and Bill Allison’s
McNamara Formula Vee, so we all made
the Qualifying Grid.
Looking in the Mirror, this has been
a great season. As some of you are
aware, for family and health reasons, I
am stepping down from the Road Racing
Director position. During the year 2002,
we successfully implemented the
Reserved Paddock Program. The vast
majority of the drivers have expressed
their opinion in favor of the continuation
of that program. The Board of Directors
have come down in favor of the new
position of Chief - Race Worker Services,
which required a “re-write” of the Race
Worker – Driver Support[ed] Program
and will enable the Chief of Race Worker
Services for 2003 to provide awards for
extraordinary service. This program is
to become effective for the year 2003.
The Reserved Paddock Program and
the Chief – Race Worker Services are
the two programs that I, as Road Racing
Director, wished to see enacted and I am
pleased that those programs are either
Page
12
in place or will be for the year 2003.
You have two great candidates, Bob
Skinner and Boyd Campbell running for
the position of Road Racing Director for
2003. I will give my complete support to
either and assist in any way that I can.
We now have the Awards Banquet to
look forward to. I understand that Jeff
Zurschmeide has those plans well in
hand and I look forward to seeing all of
you there.
As your outgoing Road Racing Director,
thank you for the opportunity to serve
all of you, Drivers, Chiefs and Workers,
and to serve the Oregon Region. My
special thanks to Bob Smethers and
Bud Mansur, Co-Race Operations
Managers, our Competition Manager,
Howard “Duck” Allen, all the Chiefs and
Workers, and last, but not least, our
Office Administrator/Registrar, Karen
McCoy.
Most of all, thank you for “Looking in The
Mirror” and for taking care of each other
out there.
“Thank you for the opportunity to serve all
of you, Drivers, Chiefs and Workers, and to
serve the Oregon Region. “
Just a few of the many people who turned out
to make the 2002 Season Finale a success!

From A Director’s Chair
From A Director’s Chair
By: Cheryl ‘Mindy’ Allen, Director 1
email: [email protected]
Last year, Robert Dratwa brought an idea to
the Board of Directors. He recognized that
many of the workers aren’t able, or choose
not, to attend the year-end Road Racing
Awards Banquet due to the expense.
He suggested that there was an excellent
opportunity to recognize some of the
workers who are there for the Club when
they are needed most, by providing them
with tickets to the Banquet. RE Greg
Bell and the Board thought it was a great
idea, but ran out of time before it could be
organized.
“An excellent opportunity to
recognize some of the workers who
are there for the Club when they are
needed most”
Robert and Greg brought the suggestion
back to the Board this year, and we all
agreed that it was time to make it happen.
We agreed that we would use funds from
the Worker Incentive Program to provide
Banquet tickets to thirty workers.
We contacted the Chiefs of each of the
worker specialties, and asked them for the
names of workers who were there this year
for the March and April events, the Friday
of the July event, and the August event; the
people they really count on to get the job
done when we need them most. They gave
us approximately 75 names.
At the September Board meeting, thirty
names were chosen, at random, to receive
a ticket to the Banquet. The winners are
listed to the right.
I’ve always known that our racing family is
there when we need them. But I have to
admit I was pretty amazed at the end of
August.
Sometimes it seems as if the racing gods
are looking out for us. I was on a two-day
marathon business trip to Montana that
involved five plane flights and two largegroup training sessions.
I’d made it through three flights, and one
presentation on the first day, and found
myself in a hotel in Missoula very early on
the second day.
When I staggered downstairs to hit the
continental breakfast before the second
October 2002
training session, wondering how I was
going to make it through another day, I
found Esther McAlpin walking into the
breakfast room a few feet ahead of me. If
you know Esther, you know there is no one
better to keep you grounded and serene, no
matter how bad things get.
After we exchanged big hugs, and ate a few
quick bites together, I headed off to do the
second training. At which point the first rule
of life kicked in. If anything can go wrong,
it will…and it did. Without getting into the
boring details, I was in a near total state of
panic when Esther showed up again, this
time with Jim. More big hugs and suddenly
my perspective shifted. At that moment I
realized that no matter how badly things
were going, it had nothing to do with what
is really important in my life. I survived, the
training went on, and when the day was
over, I was back in Portland (kissing the
ground!) and more grateful than ever for my
race family.
So, Esther and Jim, thank you for being
there (which was purely fortuitous), but
more importantly, for being the very special
people that you are!
I can’t end this column without talking
about the last event of the season. Going
into the weekend, I was feeling kind of down
because I couldn’t go to the Run-Offs this
year. But as great as it would have been
to be there to see Duane Davis win his
twelfth national championship, to see Mark
Jaremko win in DSR, and Scott Culbertson
on the podium for the second straight year
in GT-4, I was very glad to be here for some
incredibly great racing, and the all club
party.
We started Sunday with the SRF race.
Chris Jackson, Todd Harris and Mark
Goodman kept us entranced as they traded
the lead back and forth, lap after lap. When
the word came over comm that they were
on the last lap, we all groaned and said “It
can’t be over already!” (For any drivers who
may be reading this, that is the ultimate
compliment from corner workers!) Larry
Vollum, who started the race at the end of
the pack after switching from his own car to
a Pro Drive rental, and Johnny Humphreys,
who fell to the back after an early pit stop,
both put on an awesome show as they
moved steadily and rapidly back up through
the pack. We saw some top drawer racing,
and I was literally standing on the rails of
the tower at turn 4, straining to see who
would take the checker, at the end of the
LOUD PEDAL
race. The Vintage race provided more
excellent action, with an awesome battle
between the Corvettes. And we finished
the day with an IT race that pretty much
blew the socks off our feet! The Davies
boys from Hood River put on the most
excellent show of close racing in their
Miatas that I’ve ever had the pleasure of
watching.
The rally on Saturday, three stages - each
consisting of one lap around PIR - was
great fun. The cars were beautiful, and the
drivers and navigators were not only great
at what they were doing, but incredibly
polite. Every one of them shouted “thank
you” as they passed our corner. (Road
racers, please take note!) Cascade Sports
Car Club cooked an awesome dinner for
us, and the TC Blues Band kept many of
us out dancing until way too late Saturday
night. After more years of corner working
than I care to admit to, I still can’t figure
out where we find the energy to dance
after a long day on our feet. I guess the
magic is in the music.

awards banquet are:

Solo 2 Report
By: Chuck Jarvie, Solo 2 Director
email: [email protected]
It is now mid-September and the season
is about over for the Solo group. Our
National Championships in Topeka are
over and I am waiting for results from our
last regional events this weekend.
As I mentioned last month the solo
Nationals are a really big deal, with about
1200 entries this year, all of them making
their runs in the space of four days. For
first timers it really can be overwhelming
to show up, maybe as their own regional
champ, and face a starting grid that
has more cars in their class than some
regions get in an entire event.
Some of us have to get used to the
weather, i.e. dry, windy and hot (the
Solo 2 Report
AS was ex-Oregon member Jason Isley
who took the third place trophy. Tristan
Kotzian drove Jason’s car in ASL and
took home the second place trophy after
making the fastest run in her class on the
second day. It was also her last run and
she had been stuck in 6th until then.
Jim Daniels took home the 11th spot
trophy in ES, only two seconds back of
first, in another of the huge (54 entries)
classes at Topeka. Tami Daniels finished
in 5th, just out of the trophies, in ESL.
Other Oregon Region participants were
Jim and Bonnie Mueller in FS, FSL with
their Mustang Cobra and their son, Lorin
in HS with a Ford Focus ZX3. In STS
(that’s Street Touring Stock, I think)
Curtis Eames got mired in 29th (out of 49
entries) after switching to a new brand
of tires shortly before the Nationals. The
new brand looks promising but was not
“Doug Barrett is running for the Solo2
position. I hope you will give him your
support as much as you have me”
first four days for me were 98+F and the
last four 90+F). It’s a long way to go for
about 5 minutes of run time, but you find
yourself wanting to go back anyway.
Here is how Oregon Region did. Super
Stock (SS) seems to get lots of publicity
(us open wheel drivers can’t figure out
why) and is dominated by the Chevy Z06
Corvette in that only three drivers were
in something else (BMW M3’s) out of 51
drivers. Yours truly got to provide warm
tires as co-driver (managing only 44th) for
Tom Kotzian (past 3 time champion) who
came in with a trophy for 11th. Tom was
only two seconds behind after two days
on two different courses.
The competition is really tough. In AS
are the previous generation Corvettes.
We finally convinced Chuck Spittal to
take his ’91 automatic soft top to Topeka.
As a first timer he drew the short straw
and was virtually first car out on the
tough south course, with no rubber in
the groove, cold tires and I think was in
17th after the first day.
On day two, north course he showed
he could run with everyone else and
turned in the 5th fastest time in his class.
Chuck ended up in 10th (trophies only
went six deep in AS) and really showed
what he is capable of. Also doing well in
Page
14
quite good enough for Topeka where you
have to be at the top of your game on
every run just to get into the trophies,
which went 14 deep in STS.
However, not all was lost. Pam Eames,
the better half of Curtis, took the second
place trophy in STSL, which is one of
the larger ladies classes. Another exOregon member, Dawn Maxwell, got her
first Nationals trophy running a borrowed
(but very fast) Miata in CSL and taking 4th
place. Her companion, Mark Johnson,
was able to manage 18th in CS. Sounds
to me like the ladies are taking home just
as much trophy iron as the men.
The last Oregon trophy winner is Chris
Hartman, in 8th place GS, driving a
Subaru Impreza, one of only two I
could find on the entry list.
The top ranks of GS are
dominated by the Toyota
Celica, some Neons and
a few other marques. It is
also a brutally competitive
class with 43 entries and
trophies down to 12th. Last
year Chris ran in STS on
ordinary street tires, had a
co-driver, and took home a
10th place trophy. This year
with sticky tires and driving
LOUD PEDAL
alone he did even better. And I think this
is only his second Nationals.
Now for some honorable mentions. Last
year Mark Darby took home a trophy
for DS in his ’99 Neon. This year it
got moved to GS and he only finished
19th. However, he tried to improve his
competitiveness by taking a co-driver,
one of our newer members, Kala
Rounds. Kala normally drives an older
Miata and is still learning how to drive
this crazy game of ours and make her
car more competitive, so the switch to
Mark’s heavily prepared Neon is not
trivial. Not to mention it was only a few
weeks before Nationals and they were
planning on driving straight through,
about thirty hours on the road, with a
car so full of tires, suitcases, etc that
they could not recline the seats to get
any sleep. And this was also Kala’s first
Nationals experience.
Talk about jumping of the deep end,
this is it! The result was a 33rd placing
in the open GS class. It doesn’t sound
like much until you realize she could
have run in the ladies class, GSL, and
finished fourth, still out of the trophies
by one place, but it does sound better
on resumes. Instead, she stayed in the
open class to help Mark. That kind of
attitude is really what this sport is about,
in my humble opinion.
This is just about my last column and
by the time you read it elections for the
Board of Directors will be going on. I’ll
be stepping down and Doug Barrett is
running for the Solo2 position. I hope
you will give him your support as much
as you have me.
Writing a column on a monthly basis has
been a first for me and I can tell you it is
not easy, but I have gotten to the point
where it is somewhat enjoyable. The
Solo2 awards banquet is on Nov 2nd and
I hope to see you there or out on course
next season.

The Duck Stops Here
The Duck Stops here
By: Howard Allen, Competition Manager
email: [email protected]
“Please, please, please
drop SpeedTV a line or
an e-mail and tell them
how much you ENJOY the
Run-Offs coverage”
Well this is “Howard L. Thompson” here
to handicap the Run-Offs for you. The
“Fear & Loathing” at Mid-Oho will be
done by the time you read this, so as you
tune-in to SpeedTV,
(http://www.scca.org/amateur/club_
racing/runoffs/speed_schedule.html)
to watch, this is who you can cheer for.
(Including some surprises!).
OK, maybe the “L” stands for Loon (NOT
Duck), but here we go . . . . . NW member,
Mel Kemper, will be our guy to pull for
in FM (#2). Ernie Anderson (#27 EP)
will lead the RX-7 charge… GO Blue!
Chris Tryon (S2 #71) could well be the
one to watch in race one. A fine young
gentleman who has won and impressed
up and down the right coast, he could
surprise all. He is being “handled” by
trackside characters Jon “surf’s up”
Fossi and Doug Esterbrook, so you
know he will take the track in Ohio with
an excellently prepared and set-up car.
Duane Davis goes for championship
number twelve in GT-2 (# 1). Need we
say more?
Larry Hansen from Eureka High School
will represent in GT-3 (#9). Lans Stout
will be the “other” racer from the Oregon
region in #6, hoping to break through for
a long overdue medal. While we will all
be holding our breath and hoping that
Scott Culbertson (#46) gets to the top
step of the podium this year. Last year
his race was riveting to say the least.
American Sedan brings us Chris
Billings, who brought “Shermie” back
from the dead after that first lap punting
last year. So let’s hope for at least a
medal for red #21, if not a podium for one
of the most dedicated members of this
Region. Chris, here’s to having another
post-race celebration at Mike’s pizza!
(along with Jay & Roger). The man with
the most heart will be lucky number 13
in the A.S. race, John Blizzard. Dr. John
will take the track in the Norton Gaston
prepped Camaro, so he will be READY.
Longtime campaigner Lynne Griffiths
(#31) and Ali Naimi (#14) will represent
in SSB & SSC respectively. Utah’s Steve
Zink (#34) will try to chase down club
racing’s answer to John Force, AZ’s
Scotty B. White in T-1.
John Black in SRF. Need I say more? A
certain Mindy’s favorite SRF driver. He
may be from Tahoe, but his roots are
here. Don’t worry, Mindy & Mike, I’ll be
sure to take him to the “Dead” Lobster
for you.
Please, please, please drop SpeedTV a
line or an e-mail and tell them how much
you ENJOY the Run-Offs coverage,
(THINK what it does for membership).
The “Big” Johnson has told me how very
close we came to NOT having this honor
this year.
Have I forgotten anyone? Oh, yeah. The
only person who I would admit is crazier
than me, Mark Jaremko. Talent? Yes. He
has only had three races in a DSR, and
is picked by SportsCar for the podium
in that class. He is also picked in FF,
after two previous trips to the podium.
I watched him finish second to Sam
Schmitt in FC at Road Atlanta in ‘93.
Could this be the year the Presidents
Cup comes home to the Northwest? Too
bad he can’t get off his butt and change
his region of record to Oregon! <G>
Wasn’t the October issue of SportsCar

standings as that was pretty well decided
before the weekend.
Todd Harris dropped back into the the SRF,
I think to keep his license current! He’s the
chief instructor at the Pro Drive School but
just did one TRANS AM race this year. He’s
a formidable racer, and he regularly kicked
my butt before he retired to run the school
at PIR.
Well he just dropped back in and resumed
where he left off. Congratulations Todd,
Great drive man!
I did have my moment of personal glory,
however. Dode and I approach qualifying
with the same intensity as Williams and
Ferrari. Dode times the top competition,
(you know you’ve arrived when Dode
bothers to time you!).
We had two qualifying sessions and I was
top of the time sheets with a 1:20.2 mid day
Saturday. That’s a pretty good time, and I
thought it might stand up even though we
had an 8:50 am qualifying time for the
second session. (cool air). I went out with
Derrick Hanna, who was alternating driving
a front wheel drive, turbo IT something,
(not a good mix), and we traded drafts.
Dode was monitoring the times of the
competition.
Just prior to the end of the session Dode
called me with the bad news that Todd had
turned a 1:20.02,, WOW!
More lead changes than I can remember,
virtually every lap, and several times two
lead changes per lap as I passed Todd on
the back straight. Mark Goodman was right
there with us and led a laps also.
“I drafted by Todd,
hoping to get the
finger from the
starter”
I drafted by Todd at one point, and
deliberately went just a tad slow through
the back esses, two reasons, one: to try
and cool my tires which were starting to
give up (5th race weekend) and second:
to let Mark close on Todd with the hope
that they would get in a scrap and let me
escape.
This plan backfired when Mark followed
Todd by me on the straight on the next
lap, then overtook Todd for the lead on the
next lap. So much for strategy!! Now I was
third.
Well we overtook each other enough that
I really can’t remember all the details, But
Dode reported that the announcer was
so excited that he could barely catch his
breath.
I drafted by Todd, hoping to get the finger
from the starter, but alas, no. Todd drafted
by on the last lap and that was the move
of the race.. My tires were not at their best
and Todd is so fast though the back esses
that I couldn’t mount a serious charge, I did
try to worry him but all that did was put me
off line so that Mark Goodman came within
about two feet of taking second place from
me.
This was a barn-burner of as weekend, a
great season finale. Nice clean racing, no
hits no errors. I just can’t imagine a better
class to race in.
One very important word that I need to say
is a huge thank-you to the workers. I hope
we gave you enough entertainment and
I’m so greatful for all the time you devote
to the sport. There was a grea BAR-B-Q on
Saturday night, with live music and lots of
great company. Thanks.
And the unknown worker responds:
“Catia and I were working in turn 4, so we
had an excellent view of all the action in the
west end of the track. We were “leeterally”
(as Catia would say) standing on the
railings on the tower straining to see who
would get to the checkered flag first at the
end. You all got the ultimate corner worker
compliment when they announced last lap,
and everyone on my crew groaned and
said “It CAN’T be over already!”
“How much time left?” I asked. ”Not much,”
she replied, “maybe two minutes.”
”That’s going to be mighty tough.”
“Drive like Schumacher” she says, (she
always says that when she want’s me to do
the impossible.)
Well the Timer clicked off 1:19.900 and
there was the checkered for the end of
the session. Dode got me at a 1:19.89 and
Timing and scoring got me at 1:19.88?
good for the pole. I was ecstatic. Qualifying,
as much as the race, is a lot of fun, it’s a
great time to have a good mate on the
radio, great team stuff. I love it.

The race was lots of fun too. Three different
leaders, very clean, lots of passing, the

good as it gets.”

I’d
like to recognize the outstanding
efforts Doug Berger has put into
this publication over the years of his
editorship. His talents are numerous,
and we were all the better for having
his expertise guiding the Loud Pedal
through the 90’s. Doug was awarded
3rd place in the National Newsletter
competition which further speaks to the
kind of work he did for the membership.
Thank you, Doug.
Dave Isselhard your Road Racing
Director has decided not to seek reelection.
Dave’s got his personal
priorities well in hand, and for that I
have great respect. He’s worked very
hard this year, trying different schedules,
working on class rules and groupings,
and attending countless meetings.
Please thank him for all his efforts the
next time you see him.
I’d like to thank Diana Dance and Bill
Dratwa for carrying out Robert Dratwa’s
last wishes, and for allowing all of us to
share in their very personal loss. I was
moved by Diana’s reading during his
ceremony at Turn 12 last Saturday, and
further touched by all the people there. It
was truly a fitting service for Robert.
Speaking of last weekend, what a
wonderful opportunity we had on
Saturday to have all of our venues
competing at the same place and time.
I was thrilled to see all the folks from the
Oregon Rally Group there. The Club
Rally was fun; they look a little different on
track than they do when sliding through
the forests at obscene speeds. Race
and Solo II had two major accidents. At
last report Ernie Yakomovich was treated
and released. The Solo II participant,
who managed to break a water pipe
and take down the electrical on the propit wall was OK too. The report on the
vehicles isn’t such good news.
The All Club party truly turned out to be
All Clubs. Thanks go out to Cascade
Sports Car Club for doing all the dinner
work Saturday night. All of our tummies
appreciate the good food after a long day
of racing. TC Blues was there playing
their hearts out for all of us who like
to get up and dance a little. The late
night drags were there too, and I’m still
so impressed by seeing all the kids out
there interested in racing.
We have to remember that we are
sharing PIR now. We don’t know what
our future holds, but, for now we’re
sharing. That means we have to support
and respect our fellow users. These kids
could be our future, lets show them what
sportsmanship is really all about.
Unless some miracle happens (I haven’t
given up hope) we will be shifting our
Race operations to the pro-pits for
2003. This means displacing our Solo
II competitors; a course of action that
causes me to feel very personally
defeated. I’d like to hear from you,
“Thank you for
choosing to be an
Oregon Region
member. “
please email me with your thoughts
about things to consider regarding this
move, include any thing you think I need
to hear.
In the near future, we will be
appointing a new track development
committee. I have had discussions
with representatives from other Clubs
regarding this possibility. All of them
agree that the time is right to attempt to
build a Club track. If you have experience
in Development, Incorporation, or other
relevant experience, please let me know.
I envision this person to work with the
other Clubs to develop ideas on how we
can bring this Northwest Racing dream
to fruition.
Congratulations to all of our Regional
Road Racing & SoloII Champions.
Rally still has a couple more events to
get in before their Championships are
decided.
Congratulations to Duane
Davis for winning a 12th Runoffs
Championship. We had 11 drivers
go back to Mid-Ohio to compete at
the “Olympics of Motorsports”, there
were a few heartbreaks, but a bunch
of podium finishes. In addition, long
time Oregon Region member, Larry
Hansen from Eureka, CA won the
prestigious President’s Cup. He also
got a silver medal in GT3. Neil Swanson
was crowned the BF Goodrich Sound
Control Worker of the Year. He joins 5
other Oregon Region workers who have
been similarly honored. Thank you, Neil,
for your frequently thankless job well
done.
Thank you Gary Manchester for printing
up stickers in Robert’s memory, and just
for being you. Thanks Karen McCoy
for being the always happy voice on
the other end of the Office phone, and
for talking to me in that calming voice
when I’m worked up about something.
Thanks to Mary Thompson for being
the best scribe we could ever hope for.
For organizing our meetings, and for
keeping us on task (I didn’t do so well
without you at the last meeting, just ask
Mindy…)

The season for race and solo is drawing
to a close, but rally is still going strong
with one more each: a ClubRally, a
RallyCross, and a RoadRally.
Before we get to those, however, I
wanted to take a moment and say a
big ‘Thank You!’ to Holly, Bobby, Bud,
and Dave for letting us use some of
the track time for the Tarmac Zone
ClubRally on the 21st of September. I
know there is only a certain amount of
time you guys are allotted for use each
weekend, and letting us borrow some
made those who participated feel very
welcome at the All Club Party. John
Elkin was the mastermind behind our
segment of the show, and he put in a
lot of work, as well. Thanks, John! If
you weren’t there or missed it, we had
some pretty interesting lines through
most of the corners. Check elsewhere
in this issue for times to see who was
brave enough to take on the track, and
how we did. Now, on the rest of the
season!
On October 12th and 13th, Oregon
Region and Oregon Rally Group are
proud to bring you the Port Orford TSD
RoadRally. This event, written by Andy
Hilmer and chaired by Kevin Poirier,
will start in Wilsonville, traverse the
Willamette Valley and the Coast Range
to end the day in Port Orford. Once
there, the town rolls out the red carpet
with a party like no other. Dinner, two
bands, and the whole community will
be on hand to welcome us for a midrally party like no other. After breakfast
the next morning, it’s back on the road
to end in Albany. This will be two
days of adventure through some of
Southwest Oregon’s best country
roads in an easy to follow format. If
you haven’t tried RoadRally before,
this would be a great introduction.
Hurry, though: Space is limited to the
first 25 cars. Contact me (see below)
or see www.oregonrally.com for more
info.
The following weekend will be the
final event in the NorPac ClubRally

11 short miles total, the event will
serve as a stepping-stone for possible
future events in the area. It is also
rumored that our own local automotive
newspaper
correspondent
Jerry
Boone is looking for a ride in the event.
Stay tuned for more info.
Lastly, on the 26th of October will
be the season ending event for
RallyCross. This looks to be a big
one, too. Please note that this is a
Saturday. We had to change it for the
following reason: On Sunday of that
same weekend, Subaru of America
is having a track day at PIR with all
sorts of big doings. They are working
to bring to the event Mark Lovell of the
Subaru Rally Team USA. If they get
him there, there is a great probability
that he will be in town in time for the
RallyCross on Saturday morning,
before heading over to Carr Subaru
for an afternoon appearance. With a
little cross marketing, we could see the
largest turn out for a RallyCross event
in the region’s short RallyCross history.
Again, keep an eye on the website, as
well as www.Subaruwest.com (Subaru
Western Region’s Website) for details
as they become available.
Well, that’s all for this month. If you
would like more information of the Port
Orford TSD, would like to volunteer
for the Mt. Hood ClubRally, or want
to know how you can challenge
Mark Lovell at the seasoning ending
RallyCross, you can contact me in one
of the following ways: via snail-mail at
P.O. Box 3511, Tualatin, OR 97062; via

Letters Policy
Letters to the Editor are printed
as soon as possible after they
are received. Letters must
be signed and are solely the
opinion of the author.
Letters that are obscene,
abusive, or in poor taste will not
be printed, but may be saved by
the editor so he can laugh at
you behind your back.
The Region’s Future
(Addressed to the Region Board of
Directors & the Loud Pedal)
Just want to take a bit of your time with
my “interested member of the club” hat
on for a minute here. I’m sure some of
the thoughts below have occurred to
you, now that you are “Members of the
Board,” but wanted to outline some my
thoughts upon which I’ve been quiet for
a number of years – due in part to other
hats that I’ve been wearing. My interest
here is getting some issues on the table
and prompting the Board for definitive
answers upon which members can track
progress for these issues.
The interest here is as a club member
and corporate stockholder. Greg Bell’s
letter to the membership earlier this year
has prompted the thinking about issues
that do need to be addressed.
The first issue then, is: The principle
outlined in the Region’s Bylaws is that
the Board is a POLICY Board and as
such needs to put goals and objectives
for each of it’s programs in writing for
the people who are going to implement
those goals and guide the Region’s
success.
Second issue: Getting the BUSINESS
house in order should be a high priority.
Depending on how you count the
money, Oregon Region is a $500,000 to
$1,000,000 a year private non-profit state
approved corporation. That includes a
number of legal responsibilities and tax
issues.
October 2002
We Get Letters!
We Get Letters!
Third issue: Access to Board meetings
for folks living outside of Portland – are
there any thoughts being given or plans
being made to hold Board meetings in
the Wilsonville area to give members
from Salem and Eugene better access
to them?
As an alternative, can they be held
during Saturdays or Sundays to make
the travel easier for members outside of
Portland?
Fourth issue: What has been produced
by the Bylaw Revision Committee that
has been mentioned a couple of times
in the past year or two in the minutes?
“What is the Business
Plan for the Region?”
What problems/issues need
corrected in the Bylaws?
to
be
Fifth issue: What is the Business Plan for
the Region?
-- One year;
-- Five year; and
-- Ten year horizons.
Included in this would be the basic
question of whether or not the Region
is going to look at finding any alternative
sites to the Portland International
Raceway for roadracing, solo and
possibly rallycross competition. The
ongoing disintegration of CART makes
this a pretty important situation. Paul
Allen has not abandoned his plans to
turn PIR into a site for Concerts, and
the City is demanding more and more
revenue from PIR as a facility. We will all
be affected by this situation.
LOUD PEDAL
Fifth issue: Based on the short and
long range plans, what budgeting
philosophies are going to be used, and
where can one get a copy of the Balance
sheet for the Region. Coincidentally,
have the Solo and Rally budgets been
incorporated into the Region’s overall financial plans and tax reporting
structure?
This would include a budget approved
by the Board for each event – Racing,
Rally and Solo. Also, have the books
of each activity been standardized and
how much does each activity contribute
to the overall financial welfare of the
Corporation?
Sixth issue: Where can members go
to get copies of the job descriptions
for all Board Appointed positions?
Also, I understand that some of the
responsibilities for specific Board
positions
have
been
“adjusted”
because in the past certain members
have not been willing to accept those
responsibilities. Have the Bylaws been
modified to permit this, and if not, are
the currently elected members going to
return to the standards established in
the Club’s Bylaws?
By raising these issues, I understand
that I am volunteering to assist in any
way possible to address those issues.
Most sincerely,
Gary Van Horn

Things that make you go hmmmm?
Have any of you seen the new Baxter Auto Parts commercial? There was a yellow SCCA Pro Solo car in the ad
that had a lot of air time. Since Baxters is a local company, was it one of our SoloII Drivers‛ car? Who was it?
You‛ll find a picture of Ben Hockman elsewhere in this issue. Who built the car he‛s sitting in? When did it
race? Who was the driver?
On Saturday, September 21, 2002 during the Tarmac Zone Rallysprint there was a Rally driver out there who
is the only non-road racing recipient of the Region‛s Most Inspirational Driver of the Year award? Who was
the driver? What were his accomplishments the year he won the award?
If you know the answers, email them to [email protected]

Juicy Gossip
Steve Johnson, President of SCCA, was quoted in the National Speed Sport News saying “One can
now join the SCCA at age seven and race until they are 70.”
This prompted local club racer Monte Shelton to write to Mr. Johnson, saying “I’m very pleased
the SCCA has added karting. It’s a very logical progression up the ladder. However, I am slightly
concerned about the part “race until they are 70”! Are you trying to send a message to us senior racers?
Is there a regulation I have overlooked somewhere? Are you trying to get insurance costs down? Or
What? Please explain this, Mr. Johnson. Some of my contemporaries, Dan Carmichael, Paul Newman,
Oscar Kovaleski, Pete Lovely, etc., would be very interested. This couldn’t be a conspiracy by younger
drivers to get us “geezers” out of their hair, could it?”
Steve called Monte and explained that it was just a figure of speech, and according to Monte, they had
a good laugh over it. So we can all look forward to geezers in our hair for the foreseeable future.

I am seeking your assistance in hopefully
providing some information related
to a Formula B car which was raced
in your region between 1965 and 1980
approximately
The roll bar stamp is 96.34. I am trying to
find out the name of the owner to whom
the log book was first issued, plus any
other information such as chassis number
or any other identification you may have,
no matter how obscure it may be.
From 1980 to 1988 the car had a Lola
chassis and part Brabham/part Lola
bodywork. It may have been #37
Black/Red, with an Indianapolis Motor
Speedway sticker on the nose. [I have a
photo of the car - JZ]
I hope you can help me in this matter as
it is of vital importance to me to trace this
information. Thank you in anticipation
of your help.
Yours Sincerely,
Haydn Mills
