Financials MARCELLO ANGELINI Dear friends, The Board of Directors in any given corporation, especially an artistic, not-for-profit organization, determines the scope, objectives and vision for the company. Tulsa Ballet is no different and the community, through their representatives composed by the Ballet’s Board, have spoken loud and clear. Our mission statement emphasizes Tulsa Ballet’s commitment to: • • • • Preserve the tradition of classical ballet Promote the appreciation of contemporary dance Create works of superior and enduring quality Educate through exceptional dance training, performances and outreach programs Every action we take generates from these four core principles. I will focus on the first three, as they pertain to the shape and form of our seasons. Every year, every season, our offerings must include the right balance between classical ballets, contemporary works and world premieres. With a repertory spanning such a wide range of styles of dance, and two full centuries of tradition, our first task is to assemble a group of dancers with the right technical and artistic versatility. We need a team that can morph with each program and each work. We achieved that goal; the company had the right balance of potential and accomplishment, talent and experience, tenure and new energy. The thread that connects all the dots is our aim for excellence, which inspires us to move forward with energy, passion and resolve. Nutcracker, let me just say it was the second highest grossing production in the history of the company, second only to the previous year, which was blessed by no threats of snowstorms. Contemporary dance is a reflection of who we are today. It might not have flashy titles that bring the masses to the theater, but those who take a chance at experiencing it become believers after the first encounter. We take pride in offering works of high artistic standards and great entertainment value in our contemporary programs. And, from time to time, we’ll push the boundaries of the cultural box as well. One/End/One by Jorma Elo, Paul Taylor’s masterpiece Company B, Adam Hougland’s Rite of Spring, Christopher Bruce’s Rooster, Alejandro Cerrudo’s Extremely Close and William Forsythe’s In The Middle, Somewhat Elevated rounded up our contemporary offerings for the 2013/14 season. This represented a great sampling of star choreographers, some of them performed by companies like The Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet, The Bolshoi and Kirov Ballets, New York City Ballet and Australian Ballet. All in the same season… All in Tulsa! Creating new art is the ultimate frontier for a dance company. By virtue of creating new works of high value, we influence the growth of the field, both by nurturing the voices of the future and by molding the taste of audiences worldwide when these works are “exported” outside the confines of our state. In the case of Ma Cong, not only are Marcello Angelini his works created for Tulsa Ballet exported all over Artistic Director the world, but even when he creates a new work for another company he takes the aesthetics, artistic culture and values that are intrinsic to Tulsa Ballet, the company where We fulfilled the first task, that of preserving the tradition of he grew up. His Uniko, created for our Creations in Studio K, classical ballet, by presenting three great classical works: A was a true powerhouse! Jodie Gates’s Angle of Incidence was Midsummer Nights’ Dream, The Nutcracker and Cinderella. an exploration in movement, created in a very interactive way For A Midsummer Nights’ Dream, we chose Christopher by Jodie with input from our dancers. For those of us that know Wheeldon’s version, which is light in spirit, dense in meaning and Young Soon Hue, we know that nothing she does is shallow and filled with good humor and great choreography. Mr. Wheeldon lightweight. She loves to tell a story, which she definitely did with serves as Choreographer in Residence for The Royal Ballet Contrast, her new work for Tulsa Ballet. The story she told was in London, one of the top five ballet companies in the world. that of people in a busy airport, running from one place to the Tulsa Ballet has been presenting Mr. Stevenson’s Cinderella other, people who we might not even take note of and yet, each since 1998. Why haven’t we changed it? Many reasons, but chief one of them, has a compelling story to tell. among them is the fact it has the perfect mix of humor, great dancing, great visuals and audience appeal for those ages 3 I hope you enjoyed Tulsa Ballet’s 2013-2014 season and look through 103. First, we were happy to announce the promotion of three TBCDE graduates into Tulsa Ballet II, Tulsa Ballet’s pre-professional ensemble. Next, our students had the privilege of working with Ma Cong, Resident Choreographer for Tulsa Ballet, on a World Premiere for the End of Year Performances! This was a great chance for our students to stretch and grow by learning and performing cutting edge choreography. We also had several students invited to perform alongside TBII in On Your Radar! Being onstage is a large part of each dancer’s training and a great way to see the connection between TBCDE, TBII and Tulsa Ballet. Tulsa Ballet is proud to offer Partners in Art and Hope for the Holidays to social service agencies in the Tulsa area. With these programs, our organization is able to provide the excitement of ballet to members of the community who may not otherwise have the chance to attend a ballet performance. Our staff and volunteers are delighted each year to see the excitement of the children and adults who are so thankful to have the opportunity to attend the ballet. Last year, Tulsa Ballet provided over 7,200 free tickets throughout the season to various performances. THE NUMBERS ‹‹ 338 ›› Open & Pre-Professional Division enrollment ‹‹ 32 ›› Scholarships ‹‹ 137 ›› Pointe to the Future enrollment (3 countries; 12 states) Hope for the Holidays is a benefit performance of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker, staged especially for the clients of Tulsa-area social services agencies. Since 2000, Tulsa Ballet has provided this program to see The Nutcracker at no cost to thousands of individuals in the Tulsa community. For one magical night each December, Tulsa Ballet opens its doors to clients of area social service agencies, who come to experience their first live performance of The Nutcracker, complete with juice and cookies for the family and a take home holiday gift. RECIPIENT FEEDBACK Thank you so much for The Nutcracker ballet tickets for our New Hope families! I know the children who attended had a wonderful time. ~ Director, New Hope Program My husband Joe and I donate every year to ensure Tulsa Ballet’s Hope for the Holidays makes that first performance of The Nutcracker a reality for more than 2,500 Tulsans. It’s a special performance held each December that children and families never forget. ~ Hannah Robson The children are already asking ‘will we get tickets to The Nutcracker this year?’ Some of them have never been to the theatre before, and last year’s group was on the edge of their seats. ~ The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club EDUCATION OUTREACH BACKSTAGE AT THE BALLET Leaps Ahead and Leaps in Motion serve as two of Tulsa Ballet’s major outreach programs. The programs were designed to re-establish the arts education classes eliminated from school curriculums. In the 20132014 season, the programs introduced 689 students to the physical conditioning of classical ballet and also presented ballet training traditions of developing concentration skills, strengthening visual and aural memory, implementing verbal corrections, and learning to work with peers. Participating schools in Leaps Ahead have student populations with 81% qualifying for the income-based, free-lunch program. More than 4,700 students saw Tulsa Ballet II, Tulsa Ballet’s pre-professional ensemble, perform Backstage at the Ballet, a 50-minute introduction to ballet and the craft of live performance for students. Through live narration and engaging video, students learn about a dancer’s life and all the behind-the-scenes action that goes into staging a live performance for the audience. 2013-2014 marked the kick-off of Tulsa Ballet’s partnership with Any Given Child, an arts initiative from the Kennedy Center. During this year, Tulsa Ballet served every 5th grade student in the Tulsa Public School system. The University of Oklahoma Center for Applied Research helped develop metrics for evaluating the programs. Their metrics show: ›› 100%. . . of students gained deeper appreciation of the arts ›› 89% . . . . of students exhibited higher self-confidence ›› 90% . . . . of students had increased focus in the classroom ›› 83% . . . . of students demonstrated improved posture ›› 92% . . . . reported students demonstrated an increased attention span ›› 96% . . . . reported students exhibited improved self confidence ›› 73% . . . . reported students showed improvement in expressing themselves verbally ›› 90% . . . . reported students showed fewer behavioral problems Two students from each participating school receive scholarships to continue their studies at the Center for Dance Education. ANY GIVEN CHILD Any Given Child, an initiative provided by The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., is expanding arts education to all K-8th grade students in Tulsa Public Schools. Tulsa is one of only eleven cities nationally awarded this program. Between Leaps Ahead, Leaps in Motion and Any Given Child, Tulsa Ballet has provided a live arts experience to 5,396 students. 2013 – 2014 SEASON 2013 – 2014 SEASON DONOR LISTINGS / SOCIETY / EVENTS DONOR LISTINGS / SOCIETY / EVENTS $50,000 and above C.W. ICONS & IDOLS The 3rd Annual Icons & Idols was held at the Cox Business Center ( formerly Tulsa Convention Center) on February 22, 2014. Icons & Idols is Tulsa Ballet’s only major fundraising event. In the past three years, Icons & Idols has raised close to $3 million to fund Tulsa Ballet, a company of 28 highly-skilled professionals representing 10 different countries. This fantastic evening consisted of cocktails, dinner, a fabulous live auction and raffle, and a live ask, which helped fund our education and outreach programs that serve over 5,000 students annually. Patrons were also treated to a special, table-side one-night-only performance by Tulsa Ballet.
