For those of you who are unaware, the NEMEON organization is 17 years old. It was born in
1999 with five founding members. Of those five, three are still active in NEMEON. They are
Ken Rosenberger of Gulf Coast Supply in Houston, Texas, Brent Walker of CB Wholesale in
Bellingham, Washington, and Stan Martinkus of Western Materials in Yakima,
Washington. Their combined knowledge of the history of the roofing industry and their
willingness to share that knowledge with our entire NEMEON membership has been and
continues to be an incredible asset to the entire NEMEON organization. Much of their valuable
time has been donated to the Board of Directors as well as many committees.
The vision of the original five was simple. Get together enough independent roofing and
siding distributors so they could more effectively compete with national chains by purchasing
material at a better price, sharing business practices, and learning from others. For that vision
to succeed, it had to be based on bringing value to both the NEMEON members and their
vendor partners.

Through the unselfish efforts of many individuals who stepped up and contributed knowledge,
talent, and countless hours to various committees and the Board of Directors, the NEMEON
group has grown from 17 members in 1999 to 160 members representing 475 locations in
2016.

Every year, the NEMEON team brainstorms about ways to bring more value to its increasing
membership. Some of these ideas that come to mind are the "LionGuard" brand as well as
LionGuard University, the NEMEON Network, regional bimonthly phone calls and regional
surveys, as well as a "buy local" advertising program. Additionally, a next generation group
was organized a few years ago and has taken on its own life, and, of course, the premier event
of the year, the Annual Meeting. At that meeting, members are able to have face to face
meetings with new and current vendors.

groups in the industry - a group continuing to offer more and more value to their members.

I will not claim that the only reason Bone Roofing Supply has stayed with the group is because
of the "value added" features, the quarterly checks we receive from NEMEON help us to
continue on as an independent wholesaler in a world of very competitive national chain
stores. I can honestly say, and have heard many other NEMEON members say, that the other
benefits we receive are of equal importance to the dollars we receive.
If you have a chance to take a more active role on a committee or have an opportunity to sit on
the Board of Directors, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Invest a penny's worth of
effort and it will come back to you many times over in knowledge, beneficial information and
assistance in all realms of your business.

There are many statements that we hear on a regular basis that seem to just go by
without noticing. “You get out of it what you put into it”, “A chain is only as strong as
its weakest link”, and “all progress takes place outside of the comfort zone” are just a
few that come to mind. When you start to think about these, you begin to realize how
true they really are. When I started to review what has been happening in our industry
the statement that has a lot of impact on me is, “the only constant in this business is
change”.
Over the last five years or so we have been through many changes; the industry
endured one of the longest recessions that we’ve seen, even today the volumes for
roofing and siding are way below the average that all of us are used to. Along with
that, the number of distribution outlets are even higher today than they were during
the industries peak in 2005 creating even more competition in this ever-changing
environment. Advances in technology have prolonged the lifecycle of some of our
staple products which has affected the retrofit market as consumers are replacing
siding and roofing less often. All of these factors together have created a constant
need for changes in how we as independents do business.
Adapting to change is what independent distributors do best; we are able to turn on a
dime when we see specific situations where we can set ourselves apart from the pack.
Innovation is another area where we have made an impact on the industry, whether it
be creating a niche in our markets, or raising the bar for our competitors we are
always making an impact on our industry.
Another challenge in today’s market is the ever present green-fielding and
consolidation of independents through acquisitions. As of this writing NEMEON
announced that we would be extending membership to the members of SIDA. With
the ongoing industry consolidation that is happening among the large and small
independent distributors, I always expected something similar would happen with
cooperatives. This change will help to strengthen independent distributors across the
country. We want to welcome all of the new members to NEMEON and ensure that
their transition is as smooth as possible. The NEMEON team is looking forward to
getting to know you and working on your behalf to enhance your business in any way
possible.
With all of the changes over the last few years there is one constant that we all share.
The independents are the best at what we do; servicing the contractor, providing
products by the best manufacturers in the industry, and adapting to the needs of our
customers in order to make their jobs easier to manage. Now more than ever, is the
time we need to come together as a group to support our preferred vendors. When
you are looking for a product or service it is imperative that you look to the vendors
within NEMEON to satisfy your needs. In addition we have a group of two step
distributors that can help you with the products that you don’t buy directly from our
preferred vendors. NEMEON has all of the bases covered for you to “shift the share”
and keep your purchases with NEMEON preferred vendors.
With the second half of the year right around the corner I wanted to thank each and
every one of you for your support of NEMEON and its goal of increasing our
purchases with our preferred vendors. As always it is an honor to be working for the
best distributors in the industry and I’m excited to get to know all of our new members
that are coming over from SIDA. Welcome to NEMEON!

Case Study - L.A. Roofing Materials
L. A. Roofing Materials, Inc.
Improves Their Credit Card Processing
“Just this week we have been fighting with PCI compliance,” says Steve Gardner. “We
appreciate Tom's involvement in helping us get the best credit card rate and to keep the lions
at bay ...when the ridiculous PCI compliance sticks its head into our business."
Case Study
Challenge
Don Gardner and his wife Jeanne started L. A. Roofing Materials, Inc., in 1982. Their son
Sklyands Transaction Steve joined the firm in 1991. L.A. Roofing Materials is a building material supplier that
Management —
specializes in building products for the residential and commercial roofing contractor. Their
mission is to provide superior service and support to the roofing construction professional,
L.A. Materials
while supplying quality materials at a competitive price.
Roofing
“A national bank was providing our credit card services,” Steve Gardner remembers. 57% of
the transactions were downgrading to an excessively high Non-Qualified rate. STM, a
NEMEON Preferred Vendor did an analysis of the banks fees. They were charging more for
VISA/MasterCard services then L. A. Roofing Materials was paying for American Express.
Solution
STM was able to lower rates in all interchange categories with an Interchange Cost Plus
program. Fraud protection features were implemented and are totally transparent to the
employee.
STM reprogramed the over-the-counter terminals and added Level III processing for the
telephone sales and Accounts Receivables. With the changes in EMV requirements, the
terminals have been updated.
“Tom really knows his stuff” Steve says. "We will be keeping him around for as long as
he's available."

Upgraded EMV and Manages PCI
Cut Expenses By Over 40%

Member Spotlight
Camco Roofing &
Exterior Supply
During a recent visit to Camco Roofing & Exterior Supply’s two Memphis, Tennessee,
branches, one could not help but notice the level of activity going on within both the
management team and the branches themselves. While this is not unusual for a lot of
NEMEON members, there is a little something extra going on here.
At first glance, Camco is dealing with the same issues/opportunities that most NEMEON
members face on a daily basis. Operating five branches in the Memphis and North
Mississippi market, Camco does daily battle with the majors as well as several local
competitors. The father and son team of Lanny and Brett Berry operate the business with
a simple, but often repeated within NEMEON membership, directive every day. The goal
is to provide their customers the best service and accuracy in their markets. You can see
the successful implementation of that goal in the activity level happening at both the
branches I had the pleasure to visit on a beautiful Spring morning.
Camco was incorporated in 1971. Lanny joined the company in 1986 followed by Brett in
1990. In addition to the growth that new branch locations brought to the company, the
expansion of product offerings about 10 years ago has also provided a major boost to
sales. Today, Camco offers residential and commercial roofing and accessory products,
but the additions of siding, windows, interior and exterior doors, gutter, millwork and light
sheet metal fabrication proved to be huge additions to their product lineup. Add
approximately 50 employees to the mix, and most folks would feel like they have enough
stuff to say grace over. But not Brett…
Brett has taken on additional responsibilities for NEMEON. He is the new leader for
NEMEON’s Next Gen group and with that responsibility comes a position on the
NEMEON Board of Directors as the Next Gen representative. It’s that kind of dedication to
his business as well as to NEMEON that drives Brett and helps make NEMEON a
success for all its members.

We are approaching the mid-year mark for 2016 and all indicators point to another strong
year for commercial roofing in the United States. Our discussions with our manufacturers
in the commercial businesses point to a continued strong optimism for the second half of
the year. More importantly, our members have strong back logs of jobs to ship heading
into the summer and fall. The final conformation for all this optimism came in the form of
a price increase announcement from GAF for all commercial products effective on
shipments on or after July 4. One could infer that GAF is planning on a big June and July
for commercial shipments as they are telling us in advance that they plan to ship on The
Fourth of July.
We have an incentive program in place with GenFlex Roofing Products for 2016. The
program was late in arriving and the delay generated some concern over GenFlex
continuing support of NEMEON in light of their recent change that allows the Firestone
independent sales agents to also sell the GenFlex brand. I have heard from several
concerned members regarding this change. Many of you have no relationship with the
local Firestone people. The continued support for 2016 does buy our concerned
members some time to sort through the local issues.
The National Roofing Contractors Association announced a change in leadership at the
IRE earlier this year. Longtime Chief Executive Officer Bill Good is retiring at the end of
this year after nearly 30 years at the helm of the organization. While Bill’s pending
retirement was not a surprise to many, the announcement of his replacement was big
news. Reid Ribble, United States Congressman from Appleton, Wisconsin, will be Bill’s
replacement. Reid is a three term Congressman and had announced earlier that he was
not seeking a fourth term. Reid is a former roofing contractor and President of the NRCA
and a personal friend. Given Reid’s experience as a contractor and Congressman, he will
be an excellent replacement for Bill Good.

Inspire Roofing Products, the Next Generation of Synthetic Roofing Products, offers realistic replications of
natural slate and natural shake products without all of the demanding maintenance that comes with the real
thing. Each tile is made with an advanced composite polymer blend with ‘UV’ inhibitors, blockers and
absorbers and uses 100% virgin resins for a consistent finish. Inspire backs its products with a 50 year
Limited Lifetime Warranty with the protection and durability you’d expect from a premium composite
roofing product. Inspire has 15 Standard color options, 6 Cool Roof options, and 5 Standard Color Mixes.
Additionally, our custom mix program allows up to six different colors to create your unique, personalized
color mix. Our color palette will rival those of any slate quarry or natural cut cedar shake, North America
and abroad, no matter what color you select!
Inspire's Aledora Slate is a thick, textural slate system, with
chiseled edges, varied widths and is offered in Factory and
Custom Mixes. At about ¼ the weight of natural slate, this
product makes for an easy install and will help you save
from the costly labor of natural slate and other pricy options.
This profile is available in a varied width mix, standard 12”
tiles, or a custom mix option of any of the 6”, 8”, 10” or 12”
tiles. Inspire's Classic Slate is offered at a commercial grade
thickness and is a compression molded product with unique
color variation on each profile. Both our Slate products are
designed with an InFlex cambered design to add extra protection and provide a tight surface against high
wind and heavy rain. Inspire's Arcella Shake captures the beauty of natural cedar with a color variation
produced on each shake piece. Arcella is durable against rotting,
cracking, splitting, warping and does not demand chemical
upkeep like wood shake. Arcella Shake is a Class A Fire Rated
product that you simply cannot obtain with any natural wood
shake. All of the Inspire profiles are designed to last; even in the
harshest environments.
Unlike others in the composite roofing industry, Inspire does not
require any product bending or blending at the job site - this will
help reduce labor costs. Each Inspire product offers minimal
maintenance, a natural finish, and the highest test ratings for Fire,
Hail, and Wind. Learn more about our products by visiting our
website at www.InspireRoofing.com or by calling (800) 9714148. Protect your top investment with Inspire's premium
composite roofing systems for the highest level of authenticity, quality, and lifetime cost savings.

LionGUARD University is a training initiative that we believe will be successful in
helping NEMEON reach our primary objective of connecting NEMEON Distributor
Members with our Preferred Vendors.
NEMEON LionGUARD University was launched in February 2013 as a platform to
bring cost effective Preferred Vendor Training to our Members. Historically, training
has been done by suppliers in a “face to face” environment which means that
Suppliers and Member Distributors have to travel to conduct or attend
training. Distributor sales people travel to a Suppliers location for a 1 or 2 day training
session, or Suppliers and sales reps or regional managers to the Distributors’ location
to conduct hands on training. Although this training is effective, it is expensive and
timing can be an issue with the continual introduction of new products/
applications. Ultimately Suppliers need to get their customers trained and up to date
on their offering without “waiting to train” due to busy calendars. LionGUARD
University allows Suppliers to post training modules (new products, repair training,
safety training) allowing Member Distributor Salesperson training online 24 hours a
day 7 days a week. Each module includes a quiz to insure students understand and
can apply the training on future sales call. LionGUARD University has turned out to be
a very cost effective training method, with the average cost per student trained at
under $10 per student! Typical hands on training runs $50 to $250 per student.
As of June 1st, LionGUARD University has over 1,300 distributor member students
taking courses and that number is constantly growing. There are 40 courses available
for students and many suppliers preparing to offer their first course to the member
community.
Contact Vic Anthony, Andi Voelker, or Tricia Murphy at NEMEON to submit your
employee list or to learn more about offering courses through
LionGUARD University!
