2014 CALL FOR PAPERS AND PANELS
TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY IN AN IRRESPONSIBLE WORLD
20
Educators on all levels are expected to teach more than the
outcomes in their field. With new state requirements Social
Responsibility and Personal Responsibility are expected to be
taught in core courses taught at the college and/or university
level beginning Fall 2014. How is this effecting us as educators not only on the college level but in high schools and
middle schools as well. How do we teach this generation of
students? What lessons are we learning about ourselves as
Educators? And most of all can responsibility be taught?
Join us by sharing your research and ideas at the
2014 TSCA Conference in Lubbock.

Have you heard about the monument—a sculpture of Rocky Balboa-- in Zitiste, a
small town in northern Serbia? Dr. Vartabedian’s presentation includes images of
well-known American popular culture icons as they have been used as public
memorials in Europe. Her research about counter-monument studies shows that
nostalgia can produce critically engaging spaces of deliberation depending on
how ironic commemoration intervenes in comic or tragic frames.
Kelly Russell has judged all areas of OAP from Zone to UIL State 3 times. Kelly
Russell is an Associate Professor of Theatre at Texas A&M University-Corpus
Christi, where he heads the Theatre Education Program and serves as the director
of TAMUCC’s Summer Theatre Workshop: Camp on the Coast. Prior to arriving
at TAMUCC in 2004, Kelly taught in various Texas high schools and directed 4
one-act plays which placed 1st or 2nd at the UIL State Meet. He is past-president
of the Texas Educational Theatre Association.

Yet, these tough discussions can yield great insights and lead to paradigm
shifts in thinking. The panelists will offer some possible strategies and
techniques to facilitate fruitful discussions that have been successful in
their courses. The panel is also designed to encourage audience members
to raise issues and challenges they have faced in leading ‘difficult’ discussions and/or offer their techniques and solutions.
