Winter came and went and she never saw this cat until a few weeks ago. One morning, the stray cat (Tesse) appeared with four adorable kittens following behind, two orange and two black. I went to check out the situation and found Tesse with only three of her kittens. The remains of the fourth kitten were crushed in the road, and I knew I had to act quickly. I set out traps expecting to catch the kittens first since Tesse proved too smart to fall for our traps in the past. Surprisingly, I caught Tesse first. For two days and nights, I tried to catch the kittens but never saw hide nor hair of them. It is always quite distressing when you trap the Mom cat first leaving the baby kittens out there to fend for themselves. I brought Tesse home and kept her in a crate in my garage. Her behavior indicated she was mostly a feral cat. She would hiss, spit and swipe at me through the bars of the cage. I talked to her and said I understood why she was angry with me and promised her that everything would be okay. Then, I got an idea. I loaded her into my car and drove to Chardon where the kittens had been. I sat on the grass talking to Tesse. Every time I would say her name she would “meow” and carry on. After about 10 minutes, I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. There peeking out from the woods were two, little, orange, kitten faces and peeking out from around some trees was Tesse’s little, black kitten. I immediately set out three traps and walked about 30 feet away. The kittens quickly surrounded Tesse’s cage. It was heart wrenching to watch Tesse struggle so with no avail to try to get out of her cage to her kittens. The two, orange, kittens went into one of the traps together and were caught. The black kitten went into the other trap but was too tiny to trip it to close the door behind it, so I snuck up while it was eating, and closed the trap door myself. Tesse and her babies are now all resting comfortably together in a large crate in my garage. The kittens are about 5 weeks old, terrified, but not mean. Tesse is now allowing me to pet her without me having to wear a leather welding glove. They will be given time to adjust and receive any medical care needed. In time, Mom and her kittens will all need a forever home, so please contact me if you are interested in adopting. I appeal to everyone to please spay and neuter your pets. The overwhelming number of dogs and cats that have to be put to sleep every year is heart-breaking. There are programs to assist with low cost spaying and neutering. Please check with your local shelters and/or humane societies. The little black kitten killed in the road didn’t have to suffer and die this way. No animal should have to be homeless and in search of food, water and shelter. “Saving one animal won’t change the world, but the world will surely change for that one animal.” Visit www.kdanimalrescue.org, for information on Kathy Deptola Animal Rescue. •55.5 cc (3.3 cu.in.) / 3.5 hp •Rec. bar length 18” - 20” •Weight 12.8 lbs without bar & chain 455 RANCHER™ CHAINSAW X-Torq® Reduces fuel consumption up to 20% and emissions by up to 60%.
