That is my principle reflection, as I look back on my first month of being the new senior rabbi
at Temple Solel. The midrash says, about creation itself: “All beginnings are difficult,” but your
graciousness, receptivity, and warmth have made this particular beginning that much easier.
Several days ago, I was speaking to someone in Hollywood, and he asked me the ubiquitous question:
“So, what do you do?” I replied that I was a rabbi, and for some reason, my questioner was not quite
sure what rabbis actually do – other than give sermons. Would that it were that easy.
I found myself reflecting on one of the greatest “job descriptions” for a rabbi that I have ever read.
It comes to us from Rabbi Hayyim of Brisk, the greatest Talmudist of the late nineteenth century,
and the founder of an entire dynasty of Talmudic scholars.
This was how he defined the rabbi’s task: “To redress the grievances of those who are abandoned and
alone, to protect the dignity of the poor, and to save the oppressed from the hands of the oppressor.”
Amazing – that this nineteenth century rabbi in eastern Europe would believe that the tasks of the
rabbi are, primarily, located in the realm of what we might call social justice.
Except, for one thing.
I would add: when we are redressing the grievances of those who are abandoned and alone, we might
want to add God to this list.
In our time, God has been abandoned and alone. (That is a mischievous translation of Adonai echad
in the Sh’ma — “God is lonely.”) If the sanctuaries have been less-than-full, then God is, in fact, lonely.
If our places of study are empty, then God is, in fact, lonely.
My rabbinate has had an item on its invisible job description -- teaching people how to keep God
company.
That is precisely what we have been doing, here at Solel. Our sanctuary has come alive with new life.
Our Torah study on Shabbat morning, and our Solel University offerings, have been bursting out of
the library. This is all good.

Why be a Rabbi?
My dear friends, this was the first summer in 45 years in South Florida that Penny and I never ventured out of town. There
was no trip to the mountains of North Carolina. No visiting our children and grandchildren in Atlanta. No cruise. We stayed
home. Wow, It is really hot in South Florida during July and August! As a matter of fact, July was the warmest it has been
since the weather bureau has been keeping records. Yet there are still global warming deniers !!!
This summer I was able to get acquainted with our Family of Solel’s new Senior Rabbi, Jeff Salkin. I wish him much success
in fulfilling the needs of our Temple families and reinvigorating the meaning and spiritual message of our congregation.
This summer was a time of reflection for me. In the course of my active rabbinate, I was often asked why I decided to
become a rabbi. As I mentioned in a sermon almost nine years ago, I became a rabbi because I simply love being Jewish
and I cherish Judaism. I have always been awed by the relevance of Torah and the simplicity of our faith which I believe
has been made very complex over the ages by those who need the complexity in order to demonstrate their devotion to
G-d. I have always wanted to help people improve their quality of life through the teachings of Judaism. Growing up,
I always loved my Temple and I must admit, I always wanted to be on the stage. I thought “shul business”: was like show
business and not too difficult.
As a matter of fact, as a kid, growing up in Chicago, I thought my rabbi only worked two days a week. What a great job!
This is for me. As a kid, I went to Temple almost every Friday night with my parents, and I loved it. I knew the prayers by
heart before I could read them.
My parents were “Temple Centered.”
Upon my ordination, I quickly learned the complexities of being a rabbi. Our Temple, Solel has been a driving force in
Broward County Political careers. National, State and Local leaders who have sought to serve our country, our state, our
county, and various Broward County Cities have launched their political journeys from our House of G-d.
I’m truly proud that Solel has helped to create other Reform Temples in Broward County who have used what we have
done here as a model worthy of emulation.
Solel is our sacred space. It is here where we should respect one another and be honest with each other and forgive each
other’s weaknesses. It is here , where we have cried together and laughed together and have broadened the discussion of
our heritage and strengthened our Jewish community and our bond with the faith of Israel.
For 37 years as the Senior Rabbi of Solel, I always referred to our Congregation as the Family of Solel. I’ve missed that
terminology not being used since my retirement almost nine years ago. I believe we are a family in every sense of the
word. I hope that in the years ahead, we shall once again be called the Family of Solel as we study Torah and seek to
achieve our destiny and retain our identity and together create the tomorrow of our heritage.
Penny, our children and grandchildren wish our Family of Solel a happy and fulfilling and healthy 5776.

The Journey of Jewish Learning
It is with great excitement that I’m entering my fourth
year at Temple Solel. It feels so good to be part of this
community where I can finally say, it feels like home.
Together we walked a long journey and there is still so
much more to do! Where do we begin?
How about the beginning: this year we decided to begin
our program with a special learning session for our parents.
The idea was to build up a partnership agreement where
we understand we can only accomplish our mission if all the
parts involved are in harmony. One of the first questions we
asked was:
Why are your children here?
• To feel they are part of something bigger than themselves
• To have positive and creative Jewish experiences that is
social, intellectual, and dynamic
• To continue our traditions from generation to generation
• To develop a sense of love and advocacy for Israel
• To be part of a community that not only teaches Judaism
but models Judaism
• To build up the child and the family’s Jewish toolbox
• To use the tools we give them to make right choices in life
• To make Jewish friends and to be proud to be Jews
If our goals are aligned, there is no risk for failure on this
journey. However we still face many challenges along the
way. Finding the balance between students’ secular life and
Jewish life is a big challenge. I always say “our goal is not
to compete with the students’ secular life.” I will never say
basketball is less important than Judaism.
I strongly believe it is the parents’ responsibility to find the
balance, if Jewish education is relevant to them. Is this an
easy task? Of course not! Is it possible? I think it is. But this
must be a parental choice. We cannot leave it up to our
children to decide if they want to continue their journey
after their Bnai Mitzvah. They are only 13 years old! They
are just starting their journey and we are giving them the
option to jump the train?
Here is another challenge we face: we are not a Bnai
Mitzvah Factory. We aim to build up a strong Jewish
identity to pass along our heritage from generation
to generation. We believe Judaism is a way of living.

Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a huge Simcha, but is only
one of the many life cycle events on their Jewish journey.
Think about it, while decoding Hebrew is important, loving
the language of our ancestors and understanding the
meaning of the prayers is important as well. I want to teach
our students a language that will help them connect to the
Torah, to the prayers, and to the people of Israel.
We want to build a strong Youth group at Temple Solel
to continue what you started many years ago. We have
children who started in our early childhood program, who
grew up together and bonded over the years. It is our
responsibility to maintain their connection with synagogue
life to assure that they will be the future leaders of our
congregation. Thanks to Rabbi Salkin and our lay leaders,
we can start dreaming again by having a strong Youth
Group Program at Temple Solel.
I will go back to the partnership agreement I mentioned
before—I do believe we have a tremendous responsibility
in regards to our students’ Jewish education. We are
responsible for offering a compelling program, that is
relevant and engages students in learning while providing a
foundation for love and pride for Judaism.
This year, our families and school faculty signed a Brit
Kehilah (Covenant of the Community.)
Greetings to the Temple Solel Community from the Green Committee! Please join us as we welcome the New Year with a
number of activities that will bring attention to ways we can help repair the environment. Our efforts have already begun with
sales of locally harvested honey (enjoy a sweet new year and help our beekeepers!) and insulated bags that help reduce the
use of plastic and paper bags.
Our first Sukkoth Harvest Market was held on Sunday, September 27th with a variety of locally grown and locally produced
foods including fruits and vegetables, sprouts, and even chocolate goodies for sale and sampling. Attendees honored the
agricultural roots of the holiday by tasting wine and planting cherry tomatoes to take home.
On October 23rd, we will celebrate the story of Noah with a Green Shabbat at the Beach. Come enjoy the beauty and wonder
of our South Florida beaches while sampling some of the fantastic foods (locally grown and organic) that Temple members
will bring for the potluck oneg.
We will conduct an Electronics Recycling day at the Temple in conjunction with Chanukah. This will be a great time to clean
out all of those old electronic devices stashed at home such as that old tape player, television set, and even Commodore
computer hiding in the garage. Stay tuned for more details.
We are also beginning to plan events for next spring, including celebrating Passover at the Beach. As part of the event in
previous years, we have had farmers there to sell hot radish for maror preparation, harvested salt water for the Passover table,
tasted Jonah’s wicked hot peppers and salsa, and foraged for edible plants (perhaps Moses did a little of this in the desert
when he got tired of eating manna)
Temple members are invited to come to our monthly meetings at the Temple, generally on the second Tuesday of the month –

According to Jewish law a brit, a holy covenant, is different
from a contract. A contract describes an agreement that
protects both parties to the relationship. A brit represents
a commitment. In a covenantal relationship, we believe that
our partners are acting out of good will, even when they
make mistakes or when we disagree with their actions.
What happens when rules are broken? When rules are
broken, the covenant is at risk. The balance that embraces
the learning process is affected and the consequences
affect all parts involved. This quote from the Talmud is the
essence of communal responsibility within the Jewish law:
“Kol Yisrael arevim zeh la-zeh,” meaning that “all Jews are
responsible for one another.” We are all responsible for
keeping with the rules to assure success.
Mantling the brit is a big challenge and we should all aim to
achieve it. Loving Judaism and shaping positive memories
of our students are our ultimate goals.
Abraham Lincoln said: “The best way to predict your future
is to create it. If we want to project a solid future for our
children filled with Jewish values and traditions, we must
invest in their present Jewish education.

Social Action
With donations from our incredibly generous Preschool
and Religious School Families, we donated 22
backpacks filled with school supplies for the children in
the Liberia neighborhood of Hollywood, an extremely
low-income community about 2 miles from Temple Solel.
Thank you so much to all the very generous families
who donated Gift cards and food for families in need at
the High Holidays and Thanksgiving. You really make a
difference in people’s lives.

congregants to volunteer at
the South Broward Learning
Center, the preschool we
refurbished several years
ago also in the Liberia
neighborhood of Hollywood. Volunteers are needed to
read to or do special projects with the children. If you
can donate even one hour a week it would be greatly
appreciated by the children. You can even share a time
slot with a partner. Anyone interested please contact
Stephanie Jofe at [email protected]. Thus far
this year, we have celebrated Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot
and will celebrate Chanukah, Christmas, Purim and
Passover with the children. Volunteers are also welcome
to attend and assist with these celebrations.
Sisterhood and Brotherhood Corner
Thanks to our Preschool and Religious School families,
last year we collected enough holiday toys to give 2 toys
to each child at the Broward Outreach Center, (including
toys specifically requested by the children at BOC), and
2 toys for each child at the South Broward Learning
Center. All the toys were wrapped by our Religious
School children. We hope to do the same this year with
our BOGO program — Buy One-Give One. Let’s teach
our children that on alternate nights we get a gift and
give a gift- what an amazing family tradition to start for
the celebration of Hanukkah!
January 31st will be our 10th
Annual Mitzvah Day — so
it’s going to be big. For the
past several years we have
undertaken increasingly
larger projects to refurbish
an agency in need in our
community. We have
refurbished a food pantry
and clothing bank, the South
Broward Learning Center,
the Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital playground, and
last year, the Adult Training
Unit of United Cerebral
Palsy. Our amazing temple
members, including all our
Religious School children, have
come out in force, working
extremely hard to give these
facilities a facelift and simultaneously, bringing us
together as a community. We look forward to helping
another agency in need this year.
The Social Action Committee is also available to help
your children decide upon a mitzvah project for his or
her Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
SISTERHOOD
Dear Sisters,
A Happy and Healthy New Year to all Temple Solel’s beautiful Sisters. At the start of this upcoming 2015-2016 season
we have found ourselves thinking how Sisterhood has impacted our lives. All of us are so busy with life, we had to ask
ourselves what the Sisterhood has meant to us over the years. Through the years of involvement we have met some of
the most incredible women, in addition to raising funds for scholarships and programming, while having FUN, FUN, FUN
along the way. All of these things we want to continue with you. This October, November, and December we have some
incredible events happening, so experience the FUN, FUN, FUN, with your Sisterhood.

BROTHERHOOD
Welcome back!!! I hope that everyone had a great summer. Brotherhood is very excited for this upcoming year with many fun
and entertaining activities planned. Always striving to make each year better than the one before, this year no doubt will be
the best by far. Activities this year include Poker Nights, Monthly Brotherhood Bagels after Drop Off, NFL Football Games on
the Big Screen at Solel, Camping Trips with our kids, Temple Solel Softball Team, Breakfast with Guest Speakers and much
more. This year Brotherhood and Sisterhood will join forces and we will have some AWESOME activities planned together.
As Temple Solel continues in their altruistic ways, this year will be no different as Brotherhood takes part in a new project for
our Mitzvah Day led by Drs. Michael and Stephanie Jofe and Brotherhood will once again be involved in building our Sukkah
led by Harvey Meshel.
Please join US as our programming year will include activities for all to engage in friendship, spirituality, family, food and fun.
Please come to our meetings. Bring your ideas, energy and teens. Together the Family of Solel
can really make a difference in our community!

Alexander Wilentz — October 3
Reyna Maya — NOVEMBER 7
Alexander Wilentz is a 7th-grade honors student at Pine Crest School. Alexander has many interests,
both academic and extracurricular; these include basketball, crew, traveling, writing, math, and science.
Most importantly, Alexander is a kind and compassionate young man, a great friend, a terrific son, and
a wonderful big brother. For his Mitzvah project, in honor of his friend and next-door neighbor Chris
Del Vecchio, Alexander will be organizing and leading a team in this year's Broward Gold Coast Down
Syndrome Organization Buddy Walk, in which on October 18 he and the rest of his team will walk or run
to show support for people with Down Syndrome. Follow this link to register and join his team:

When Reyna was 11 years old, she was not just playing in a softball league with much older and bigger
15 year olds, but also actually earning the respect of the best players in the league as well. Her drive and
tenacity carry forward to everything she sets her mind to accomplishing. She is a straight A student
and on the student council at Nova Middle School, but truthfully, above her athletic and academic
accomplishments, Reyna values and cares about her friends. She is a sweet, non-judgmental girl and is
surrounded by friends and family who adore her. Mazel-tov young lady!
Abby Blaze — October 10
Jake Glantz — NOVEMBER 14
Abby Blaze is in the 7th grade at Pine Crest Preparatory School in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to
academics, Abby is involved in dance at school, taking ballet classes, performing in the Middle and
High School ballet performances of Coppelia and A Christmas Carol, and performing with the Dance, Etc,
team. She also plays on the middle school lacrosse team. Abby enjoys spending time at the beach, water
sports, snow skiing, and spending time with her friends and family. Abby helps clean up the Hollywood
Beach as her Mitzvah project. She chose this project because she loves the beach and feels that we are
all responsible for taking care of our planet.
Jake Glantz is a 7th grader at Pioneer Middle School. Jake enjoys many things and finds humor and
entertainment in almost everything life throws at him. Jake’s favorites are his family, friends, playing
lacrosse, playing video games, drawing, creating, hanging with friends, talking with friends, basically
anything that makes him happy and keeps him smiling. For his Mitzvah project, Jake organized Homeless
SWAGBAGs and collected and made bags filled with essentials for the homeless. Jake then personally
handed out those bags to very needy people that were homeless. Jake and his family and friends are
looking forward to chilLAXin’ with Jake at his Bar Mitzvah.
David Lowsky — October 17
Aidan Rubinger — NOVEMBER 21
David is in 7th grade at American Heritage in Plantation. He is a member of the student council, National
Junior Honor Society and JV Football team. David's hobbies include playing electric guitar, Xbox, boating
with his friends and family, skiing and playing chess. His mitzvah project was working with local charities
in our community. Partnering with Recycle Bike Exchange, he collected 20 bikes to be refurbished and
distributed to Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and homeless shelters. He organized a Habitat
for Humanity drive in his neighborhood. He pulled weeds and planted at the Dania Beach Community
Garden. The garden distributes fresh produce to their neighborhood. He helped distributed new shoes/
uniforms and school supplies to kids in need through Hands on Broward. David is looking forward to
becoming a bar mitzvah and celebrating with his family and friends.
Aidan is a 7th grade student at the University School in Davie. Not only is Aidan a very good student, he
is also passionate about basketball where he plays both on the University School team as well as a travel
team. Aidan is a wonderful big brother to his sister Lindsey (and puppy Annie), and enjoys family vacations,
especially those in California. Aidan knows how fortunate he is to be able to go to sleep away camp every
summer. To show his appreciation and give less fortunate children the same opportunity, Aidan wants to
donate to JAFCO for his mitzvah project. As part of this effort, Aidan will be selling lollipops and donating
the proceeds to JAFCO so that these children can also experience camp this summer.
Brett Weiselberg — NOVEMBER 28
Brett Weiselberg is an amazing young man. He is the middle son of three Weiselberg boys with older
brother Jonathan and younger brother Alex never too far away. Brett attends University School in Davie
where he is involved in many school activities and plays on the football and basketball team. Brett has a
big love of sports and is a well-rounded athlete, excelling at every sport he plays. We are very excited for
Brett's Bar Mitzvah and look forward to seeing all of his hard work come together in following a family
milestone in Jewish tradition. For his mitzvah project, Brett raised money for JNF. The Jorge Nation
Foundation is a non-profit 501c3 organization, that is dedicated to raising funds to send children with life
threatening illnesses and their families on a once in a lifetime all inclusive dream trip. Brett and his family
were fortunate enough to meet and present Kayla with her dream trip. We couldn't be more proud of the
young man Brett has become.
Jacob Militzok — October 22
Jacob is a 7th grade honors student at Pioneer Middle School. Jacob enjoys playing soccer and spending
time with his family. Jacob brings smiles and laughter to everyone who knows him with his sharp sense of
humor. In addition to having his Bar Mitzvah service at Temple Solel, Jacob is looking forward to celebrating
his Bar Mitzvah in Israel next summer. For his mitzvah project, Jacob teamed up with Chai Lifeline by
collecting and distributing video games to children with terminal illnesses. Jacob loves spending his
summers at Blue Star Camps in Hendersonville, NC which enhances his love for Judaism.
Hannah Medow — October 24
Hannah Medow is a 7th grader at Hollywood Academy of Arts and Science. She is an excellent student.
Hannah is compassionate, kind, inquisitive, friendly, and an amazing big sister to her brother Harrison.
Hannah enjoys skiing, swimming, reading, and spending time at home with her family and friends, and
her 2 year old black Labrador, Chloe. As part of being a dedicated Girl Scout since 2nd grade, Hannah has
participated in visiting the homeless shelter to spend time with, and assist those in need. She has assisted
at the Humane Society, and participated in the Beach Clean-up at Hollywood Beach. For her Mitzvah
project, she has decided to help raise money for less fortunate individuals to become members of Temple
Solel. Along with contributing a portion of her Bat Mitzvah money, she will be hosting other events such
as a car wash, and a movie night. She hopes that her friends and family will join in, so that they too can
see Temple Solel grow, and experience being part of the Jewish community. Hannah is excited for her
Bat Mitzvah on October 24, and what this “rite of passage” means.

Brynn Cohen — DECEMBER 19
Brynn is a 7th grade honor student at Nova Middle School. She enjoys her friends, camp, shopping, travel,
track, lacrosse and helping others. She also enjoys working with her sister with their own kid run not for
profit organization Giving & Living. They organize several annual fundraisers and donate the money to
local children's organizations. This year the funds were donated to Give Kids The World in Kissimmee, FL.
They also got together with friends and prepared and served dinner to families at Ronald McDonald House
in Ft. Lauderdale.
