St Carthage’s Primary School
Wednesday, 17th February 2016 Term 1 Week 4
From our Principal
Mrs Janelle Heffernan
Lenten Reflection:
Jesus said,
‘If one of you wants to be great he must be the servant of the rest;…
Like the Son of Man, who did not come to be served, but to serve.” Matthew: 20:26-27
Jesus measures greatness differently from the way modern society does. Society measures greatness in terms of
the influence one wields, the position one holds, the amount of money one makes. Jesus considers such things
irrelevant. Jesus measures greatness in terms of the quality of one’s service to others; a nurse’s service to patients,
a parent’s service to children, an employer’s service to customers and employees.
This Lent we can ask ourselves, “Whose measure of greatness do I tend to follow - society or Jesus?”
Dear Families,
It has certainly been a busy start to the school year. We welcomed 67 students and their families into Kindergarten
at St Carthage’s last week. It was great to see them arrive, looking so grown up in their uniforms and wearing a
huge smile on their faces. They have settled well and have adapted to their new environment effortlessly. I would
like to say a big thank you to their teachers and Year 6 buddies who have assisted them in many different ways.
Finally, thank you to our new Kindergarten parents who have entrusted the care of their little ones to us - I know that
we will develop a great partnership working together in, and for, the best interests of the students in our care.
A special welcome also, to those families who have joined us from other schools. We trust your time as members of
our St Carthage’s school community will be a rewarding journey in education for your child and family.
We celebrated our Beginning School Mass, a week ago when our Year Six leaders received their badges and all
Year Six were acknowledged as leaders of St Carthage’s School. We look forward to their continued leadership
throughout 2016.
Thank you to all families who joined us for a wonderful evening last Thursday at our welcome barbeque and disco. It
was tremendous to see so many families enjoying themselves, catching up with friends, dancing, chatting away,
mingling and meeting new families.
Thank you to the many parents and carers who came along to our Parent/Teacher meetings last night. This is a
great opportunity for teachers to share with parents the particular grade level curriculum and expectations of
learning and behaviour for the year ahead. In a couple of weeks time we will conduct our Parent/Teacher Interviews.
These are a very valuable opportunity for
parents and teachers to acquaint themselves

School Photos
Our School photos will be taken on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23 rd February. School Photo envelopes were sent
home last week. Please return these envelopes, with correct payment enclosed, on Monday as these will be handed
straight to the photographers. We do not handle photo money. Sibling envelopes are available from the School
Office.
Please ensure that students are in their correct school uniform on these days.
Dedication of the Cathedral Altar
As you know, St Carthage’s Cathedral has been closed for some time whilst renovations have been carried out. The
conservation works cover the sanctuary and original baptistery space at the rear of the Cathedral. The renovations
are now complete and the Dedication of the new Cathedral Altar will take place on Monday 22nd February 2016
commencing at 7:00pm. This will be an historic event to which all parishioners are invited. St Carthage’s will be
represented by students and staff at the Mass.
The consecration of the altar will mark the return of weekend Masses to the Cathedral.
With Pope Francis’s inauguration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Bishop Jarrett has chosen the Cathedral’s Tower
Door as the Holy Door for the Year. Passage through the Holy Door will be a powerful reminder of the mercy of the
Heavenly Father who is always ready to receive those who approach Him. The Holy Door of the Jubilee of Mercy
(the Tower Door) will be solemnly opened on 21st February 2016 with a procession from the last 9am Sunday Mass
in St Mary’s Chapel. All parishioners are invited to the procession and a tour of the refurbished Cathedral which will
follow.

Professional Development Day (P.D.D.)
The first of our Professional Development Days for this year will be on Friday, 8th April, the last day of Term 1.
Staff will be attending a Retreat Day. There will be no school for students on this day. Active Kids Care will be
available.
From our Assistant Principal
Mrs Janette McFadden
Kindergarten 2016
What a wonderful start our Kinders have had to
their first year of school. It has been great to
see so many of them really excited to be at
school and doing what is expected of them.
They all look so grown up in their school
uniform. Mums, dads, partners and guardians,
you can be very proud of your child.
Welcome BBQ and Disco
What a wonderful evening of welcoming I witnessed last Thursday. We had beautiful weather,
great company and not to forget those fantastic sausages which were ready in abundance for us
all. It was great to see many families catching up with each other and meeting new families. A
wonderful job was done by Mrs Heffernan, Jacob, Tony and teachers who helped cook and set
up the afternoon for all of us to enjoy. It was also great to see many of the children playing and
dancing to the Disco. Thank you to all families who were able to come along and join us in a
great night.
School Sign
The mechanism of the school sign (on our Leycester St.boundary) is broken.
The information on the sign will be out-of-date until repairs are undertaken.
LATE ARRIVAL & EARLY DEPARTURE
 Students arriving after the school bell has rung, must be brought to the Office by their parent/carer upon arrival.
Please DO NOT just drop your child at the school gate if you are running late.
 Parents/carers collecting students early must come to the School Office. Staff will call students to the Office for
collection. (Parents are asked to try to make dental appointments, etc. outside school hours if possible.)
Please Note: We are unable to allow children to go with another parent unless we have permission (preferably written). If
unknown to Office Staff, parents/carers calling to collect children will be asked for photographic I.D. This is not meant to
offend and is only in the interest of your child/ren’s safety.
Uniform 2016
What a great improvement there has been in the wearing of the correct school uniform
by students. Our all black leather jogger looks stunning with both sports and school
uniform. The jogger must be able to be polished. This means that black canvas gym
boots and joggers are NOT our uniform shoe. Neither are black joggers with white
soles, or any other colour on them. We will start to do random uniform checks
throughout the term. Parents will be notified if your child is out of uniform via a note.
Please find below photos of correct sports shoes to be worn and correct school shoes
to be worn. There are also two examples of incorrect school shoes being worn. We
appreciate your cooperation in purchasing the correct school shoes for your child/ren.

R.E. MATTERS
Caritas Appeal (Caritas means Christian love of humankind; charity)
Pope Francis calls each “…individual Christian and every community to be an instrument of God for the liberation and
promotion of the poor…’ (Joy of the Gospel, #187). One way we can do this is to contribute to the Caritas Appeal – Project
Compassion. Traditionally our school has been very generous in its support for Project Compassion and a separate letter will be
been sent home to all families encouraging support for this worthwhile appeal. For further information you can go to
www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion
Parish School Forum News
The Parish School Forum (P.S.F.) met for the first time last Monday and members spoke of their achievements for 2015 and of
their hopes for 2016. The Parish School Forum, as its name suggests, allows members of the school Executive and parents to
meet together to discuss matters important to the mission of St Carthage’s school. As the school is an important arm of the
mission of the Church, Fr James (our School Chaplain) was also present at the meeting. Matt Brown was nominated and
accepted the position of Chairperson; Emma Tulk was nominated and accepted the position of Treasurer and Heidi Green was
nominated and accepted the position of Secretary. Other members of
the P.S.F. are the Principal Mrs Heffernan, the Assistant Principals, Mrs

GREETINGS FROM OUR SCHOOL CHAPLAIN
It’s a great joy to have been appointed to St Carthage’s Cathedral Parish to serve as an Assistant Priest. I
was ordained to the Priesthood on 8 December 2011. As a Deacon I had the privilege of serving in
Maclean Parish, and then for the last four years enjoyed the privilege as an Assistant Priest in Port
Macquarie. I have family in Port Macquarie and Bellingen, having spent many holidays with my late
grandparents in Port when I was at school and uni.
I look forward to getting to know the community of St Carthage’s Primary School and accompany you in
your life journey.
May Jesus continue to pour out his love upon you and your family!
SCHOOL CHOIR
Last week we began our St Carthage’s choir groups for the 2016 year. All boys and girls who are
interested in singing are most welcome to join in the groups.
 Stage Three Choir - students in Years Five and Six.
 Stage Two Choir - students in Years Three and Four.
 Stage One Choir - students in Years One and Two.
This year the Stage Two and Three groups will meet every Thursday at lunchtime for about
thirty minutes. The Stage One group will meet every Tuesday at lunchtime for about twenty
minutes. Students will eat their lunch and then join choir for some of their playtime.
The choir may be involved in school activities, religious celebrations, eisteddfods, recordings and
community service. Choir students will be asked to make a commitment to the group and cooperate at all times.
Singing in a choir is enjoyable; however it also helps to develop singing skills such as pitch, diction, expression and breath
control. Students will sing in unison but will also explore part singing such as harmony, rounds and partner songs.
Children wanting to join the School Choir were asked to collect an Expression of Interest form and return it to school by
TOMORROW, Thursday 18 February. A copy of the form can be found on the School Website “Letters and Forms” tab for those
still interested.
I am always so proud of our School Choirs and the dedication they show. I can’t wait to hear the student’s magnificent voices
ringing out together again.

their grandfather.
Sienna & Drue Goreman on the
recent passing of their grandfather.
Madeline Bell on the loss of her grandfather.
We extend our deepest sympathy to them and their
families.

How do you raise boys to men in a world
where trouble beckons at every turn? How
do you make sure they learn the ′right′
lessons, stay out of danger, find a path to
follow? How do you ensure they′ll be OK?
Author Celia Lashlie has some of the
answers. After years working in the prison service, she knows what can
happen when boys make the wrong choices. She also knows what it′s
like to be a parent - she raised a son on her own and feared for his
survival. As a crucial part of the NZ Good Man Project, she talked to
180 classes of boys throughout the country. Her insights into what boys
need - and what parents can do to help them - are ground-breaking. In
this honest, no-nonsense and best-selling book, Celia Lashlie reveals
what goes on inside the world of boys, and that it is an entirely different
world from that of girls. With clarity and insight, she offers parents especially mothers - practical and reassuring advice on raising their
boys to become good, loving, articulate men.

On Friday 5th February Jackson Ware (Basketball) and Payton Schweizer (Tennis) participated in the Polding

Library Information
There have been exciting changes in the Library since the end of last year.
We have been able to discard lots of old mismatched shelving and have brought in the beautiful modern shelves which belonged to the
Campus. Along with this beautiful furniture came all their books. We have been able to top up our Library books, our class reading books
and our home readers.
We discarded many boxes of old books, both fiction and non-fiction. They are to be sent overseas to schools which are in need of reading
materials.
A new lounge for the Library has been purchased and is due for delivery in early March. This will go into the ‘Quiet Reading Corner’.
The children in Years 1-2 may borrow two books at a time and Years 3-6 may borrow three books. They may keep their books for two
weeks. All children need a bag in which to carry their books.
The children will have the opportunity to change books during each Library Session. For Kindergarten, Year One, Year Two and Year Six
this is weekly, for 45 minutes. Years Three, Four and Five have one hour sessions each fortnight.
The Library is open every morning between 8.30 am and bell time (8.50 am) and books may be exchanged by any child. Parents are
welcome to accompany their children at this time.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge will commence on Monday 7th March. This year we will be encouraging older children to record their own
log online. Kindergarten will complete the Challenge in class, but the children will only receive a certificate if the permission form is filled
in and returned. Further information will follow.
The first Bookclub has already been sent home. This is a fantastic way to purchase books for your children and
to enable us to add to our Library collection. You may order these books online or send orders through the
school. A major change this year is that there is now one catalogue for everyone.
The Chess Competitions will be on again this year for interested students in Years 4-6. The first event is on
Monday 7th March. Further information will follow.
Lastly, as I constantly remind the children, ‘BOOKS ARE MAGIC’. They take us to places that we can only
imagine.
As Roald Dahl said, “So please, oh please, we pray, go throw your TV set away. And in its place you can install, a
lovely bookshelf on the wall.”
