There are many great sports to follow in our area, but there’s something about baseball that starts to capture our imagination this time of year. We have hope David Easton Potts for the coming games and the players have hope they’ll be able to play well. Worshipful Master For many years we’ve sponsored the Cherrydale Dodgers Little League team. They’ve grown up wearing our lodge name across the backs of their jerseys. Coach Romano, our 2014 Community Builder Award recipient, is hopeful the Cherrydale Dodgers are going to have a great season, despite moving up in league play. So let’s get out there (when the snow finally melts) and support them. Brother Jeff Ameen will soon be lining up opportunities to watch them play. For your future planning, we’ll have an open program of appreciation for the team on May 21st. This will be good fun and many of the players should be with us to relive highlights of the season. Following hope comes charity. It’s an essential part of our fraternity and has been for hundreds of years. We are obligated to aid and assist the destitute and those less fortunate. Aside from Cherrydale’s charitable contributions to the Masonic Home of Virginia, we locally work with the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) and the Arlington Street Peoples Assistance Network (A-SPAN). It’s surprising and sad to learn that Arlington, one of the wealthiest communities in the country, has a sizeable portion of its population facing hunger. According to a recent study, slightly more than 4 in 10 Arlington residents in the $60,000 and under income group, about 31,000 human beings, are experiencing food insecurity. Yet the AFAC collection box in the social hall is usually empty as we enjoy those great dinners before meeting. As AFAC works with the hungry, so does A-SPAN work with the homeless. One of its main programs is Street Outreach, where A-SPAN staff frequent wooded areas, parks, underpasses, abandoned buildings and other areas to meet with these people where they live. It’s estimated that Arlington has nearly 500 people who are experiencing homelessness at any given moment. Street Outreach Staff provide clothing, blankets, personal hygiene supplies, and shower vouchers to these people in need. Do you have a coat that can be better placed on someone’s back rather than on a hangar in your closet? Do you have airline travel kits you’ve been saving that might have greater impact if you put them in the A-SPAN collection box rather than leaving them in that drawer? Check with Brother Mike Zabrowski to find out which things are most needed by A-SPAN and AFAC. On November 5th we’ll have an open program on these and other community charities to identify where our contributions can make a difference. Hope and charity. Two things we Masons can give back to our community. Respectfully and fraternally, David Easton Potts David Easton Potts Worshipful Master 2015 Page 2 Cherrydale Lodge #42 LIFE MEMBERS IN PERPETUITY James H. Banton* Marvin O. Benjamin, II Robert N.
