What Were You Thinking?

Baird, A.A. Fugelsang, J.A., Bennett, C.M. Eighteen adolescents and 18 adults had fMRI while performing a task to decide if a scenario was a "good idea” or "bad idea.” Blue = adult
Pink = teen
Teens required significantly more time to determine
that a situation was a "bad idea." Using fMRI, adults showed more activity in visual association cortex and insula in response to the
dangerous scenarios. Unlike adults, teens showed increased activity in right prefrontal cortex. (This might seem counter-intuitive, but more activity doesn’t mean better activity). In fact, it suggests the
teen frontal cortex is unable to recruit approriate regions for a fast decision.

Developmental matura.on shows: Increased recruitment of dorsolateral pre-‐frontal cortex (30, 35, 36, 40, 43) and ventral prefrontal cortex (28, 34, 37, 39, 42). Decreased recruitment of lower level sensory regions such as visual extrastriate (36, 40) and fusiform cortex (40), and posterior parietal (30, 37, 38). Higher cogniFve abiliFes supported by associaFon cortex become more focal or FINE-‐TUNED with development. 2
