On behalf of the AOII Foundation Board of Directors, I am proud

Our recipe for success in 2010-11 was to establish new opportunities for the Foundation as we publicly launched
our Stella’s Wish campaign with 65% raised thus far. We also awarded our largest arthritis research grants and
academic scholarships to date thanks to the tremendous efforts of our sisterhood.
The Board and Stella’s Wish Campaign Cabinet and Committee have been working hard to fulfill our vision of
Securing the Future of Alpha Omicron Pi through establishing a strategic direction for the campaign and beyond.
I hope that you take the time to renew your pledge to AOII and make a commitment to Stella’s Wish through one of
our strategic categories. Your commitment would aid in our financial investments to solidify our Fraternity’s future.
At the Board’s Fall 2011 meeting, we reassessed our position and developed a stronger yet simplified Foundation
Mission Statement to better clarify our role.

Dear AOII Sisters and Friends:
The future of the AOII Foundation is bright indeed! Foundation donors have made our successes possible last year—without you we
could not have achieved as much as we did in 2010-2011. This annual report gives you some of the highlights of our year. I want to
tell you a little bit about our plans for the coming year.
Your support is going to help us achieve even more in the years to come as the Foundation
embarks on a new strategic plan that has five main focus areas:
• Establish a new brand campaign
• Expand the donor base
• Achieve and ensure fiscal responsibility
• Increase support of scholarship, leadership development and educational opportunities
• Strengthen partnership with and awareness of the Arthritis Foundation
The Foundation’s plan supports the Fraternity’s strategic focus areas:
• Unparalleled Membership Experience
• Consistent Membership Growth
• Positioning AOII as a leader in the Inter-fraternal Community
• Exceptional Financial management
Here in the Foundation office we try never to lose sight of why we are here—to enhance the lives of our members and to secure the
future of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity. We secure the future of AOII through a variety of programs and initiatives. For instance, we
have launched the Stella’s Wish Campaign to raise $3 million dollars for both immediate progress and future needs. But we also
depend on you to help us raise unrestricted funds to help cover the day-to-day costs of operating a foundation. We cannot survive
without either type of support—dollars to secure the future and dollars to meet immediate needs.
Each and every donation to the Foundation is important. Thank you to each of you who have supported us in the past—I hope this
annual report will inspire you to continue to support us in the future. You can make a difference in the life of an AOII.

Each ELC has personally witnessed the
impact of the program, as they have shared
in many chapter accomplishments over the
past few months. In their words...
The ELC program has given chapters the tools to improve and the encouragement
to succeed through our visits. Personally, the ELC program has made me so proud
of each and every chapter I have visited this semester and, most of all, it has given
me more pride in my fraternity than I ever thought possible. — Taryn Hinderland
Being an ELC has helped me to understand so much more about our wonderful
organization by meeting so many amazing women across the U.S. and Canada
and seeing all the great things each individual chapter adds to Alpha Omicron
Pi. Our chapters have benefited from the personal interaction and resources they
receive from our visits, which help them to take their chapters to the next level. The
benefits these women get go far beyond suggestions for officers by helping them to
better understand the big picture of AOII. — Jessica Li
As an ELC, I’ve been able to help chapters realize their potential and the good
work they are already doing. So often, we are our own worst enemies and can get
down on ourselves. Our chapters and individual members are doing some amazing
things! The ELC program has given them a sort of ‘fine-tuning’ tool to help their
efficiency and secure those successes for the future years. — Nicole Claudon
One of the greatest things I have seen on the road is witnessing a chapter’s
growth in a year’s time. One chapter I worked with went from having a very weak
recruitment, to being the strongest recruiting group on campus! They not only
reached quota, but they also met chapter total and were the only group on their
campus to do so. To be the one to share that news with them and see their tears
of joy and to know that I had helped them along the way is something I will never
forget! — Blair Dudley
The ELC program is exceptional because of the opportunities it provides for our
ELCs to visit, in person, each of our chapters and truly connect by seeing the
chapter in action on campus and in their community! Together the collegians and
ELCs mutually grow and learn from each other through activities, meetings, and
sharing thoughts both personally and as sisters. Furthermore, we strive to celebrate
our strengths and empower each other to tackle the challenges through constant
mutual inspiration! This program illustrates the value we have in staying connected
and helping every woman of AOII continue each day to be the woman that she
aspires to be. — Tracy Ottey
The ELC program has strengthened the chapters we have visited because it gives
each one an opportunity to let their lights shine while we are there. It is important
for them to realize that every chapter receives a visit, and it is not always because
they are doing something wrong. In fact, many times we want to help them
recognize and celebrate the things that they are doing so well! Being able to meet
so many sisters, near and far, has done nothing but make me so thankful for the
opportunities that Alpha Omicron Pi created for every sister. I only hope to spread
that appreciation and pride to others throughout my travels. — Clarke Erickson
As an ELC, you advise, support and empower the women from all the chapters you
visit, and the impact is immediate. Chapters are more educated, more connected
to our ritual, and more apt to create that positive change within their sisterhood.

The AOII Foundation is funding the following
programs and activities for the 2011-2012 year:
Arthritis Research Grants: $250,000
for 3 research projects
Juvenile Arthritis Alliance Grants:
$54,500 for family scholarships and children’s
activities at the national JA Conference as well as
sending children with any form of arthritis to summer
camp. Pandas donated through the Panda Project for
the children’s sessions.
Total Arthritis funding: $304,500
The most ever awarded!
Since 1967, AOII has been dedicated to supporting
the Arthritis Foundation through providing financial
assistance for groundbreaking research and assistance
to families in an effort to aid the more than 46 million
Americans and 4 million Canadians affected by arthritis.
Our affiliation with the Arthritis Foundation has developed into a strong
partnership, with AOII chapters raising more than $2 million. Our
partnership continues to grow as evidenced by our joint logo and activities
held throughout the U.S. and Canada such as the first annual Arthritis
Awareness Night with the Atlanta Braves in 2011, and AOII’s participation
in Arthritis Walks, Jingle Bell Run, Strike Out Arthritis! events and local and
national activities.
On November 18, 2011 at the Arthritis Foundation’s Evening of Honors
dinner in Beverly Hills, CA, the AOII Foundation received the 2011 Floyd B. Odlum Making A Difference
Award. This award is one of four national awards bestowed by the Arthritis
Foundation which honors an individual organization, corporation or government
agency that has helped to make a difference in the lives of people and families with
arthritis. AOII’s recognition this year is a testament to our tremendous sisterhood
through numerous philanthropic efforts. Congratulations, sisters!
AOII Foundation was a sponsor of the 2011 Juvenile Arthritis Conference in held in
Washington, DC this July. AOII Foundation and Fraternity staff attended the three-day
educational event that focused on health, wellness and fun for children affected by
arthritis, lupus, myositis, ankylosing spondylitis and other rheumatic diseases. It was a
great event, allowing families going through similar challenges to share stories, learn
new techniques for managing juvenile arthritis and have fun!

Arthritis has limited my ability to do certain activities. It has affected
my immune system and I get sick often. I live with some type of pain
in my joints on a daily basis. However, arthritis has also made me
stronger because I push myself harder to try to live my life as normal
as the next person.
The support AO¶ gives to the Arthritis Foundation is so very
important. There are many consequences of this disease and people need
to have a better understanding of how it affects the young and old alike.
I would like to thank AO¶ and my sisters for your support of arthritis
and the funding of research to ultimately find a cure for my illness.

Why Unrestricted Funding? Why Now?
In these dynamic times for AOII and the Foundation, financial flexibility is vital. While
the Foundation is thankful for a strong level of financial support, 76 percent of gifts are
designated for a specific purpose, leaving little room to address the ever-changing needs
of the Foundation.
Through support of the Loyalty Fund, our unrestricted giving fund, the Foundation Board
of Directors has the ability to direct funds where they’re needed most. Emerging needs
can aptly be addressed, leveraging significant opportunities for advancement.
Your unrestricted support makes it possible to administer Foundation programs.
Help us continue to touch the lives of our members today, tomorrow and always
by making a gift to the Loyalty Fund.

When I was a collegian, I first assumed that AO¶ was funded by the dues I paid as a
member. When I went through Chapter Consultant training in 1983, I learned how much
AO¶ depended on the Foundation to provide the support and materials we all depend on
(such as the consultant program) to keep AO¶ in the forefront of women’s fraternities.
When I first became involved as a regional and then a network officer, I felt it was
important to support the very structure that I volunteered for by donating to the
Foundation. When I began my career, and then started a family, my budget was very
small and I felt self-conscious about making a small donation to the Foundation. As
soon as I heard about the option of an automated monthly donation, I signed up. I was
able to set a comfortable monthly amount I knew would not impact my budget and it
quickly accumulated to an annual amount I felt good about. Over the years, those modest
monthly contributions have added up to something I know has made a difference.

In 1997, I received a Centennial Scholarship just as I was entering my
first year of medical school. That small gift made it possible for me to
pursue my education further since living on student loans meant
having less than $9000 a year on which to survive. It took me ten years
of training before I had a real job, but the first thing I did was pay
back that scholarship two-fold. When Stella’s Wish was announced, I
immediately knew that I wanted to be a part of securing the future of
our scholarship endowment so that our future sisters will have the same
opportunity as I did to further their educations, too.

In the fall of 2010, I had just finished surgery for my second diagnosis
of ovarian cancer. I was weighing my treatment options, and still
paying off debt from the first time around four years prior. When my
furnace began spewing carbon monoxide into my condo and needed to
be replaced, it was just too much on top of everything else I was dealing
with. Thankfully, the Ruby Fund was there for me, and I was able to
install a safer and more efficient furnace right away. As the Founder and
Executive Director of HazingPrevention.Org, a nonprofit organization
whose mission is to empower people to prevent hazing in college and
university student groups, I value the support of those who make our
work possible, and I have always supported the Foundation and the
Ruby Fund as well. .

2010-2011 Undergraduate Scholarship Recipient
My AO¶ Foundation scholarship was one of the more important
things to happen to me in my last year of undergrad. While signing
up for the MCAT, trying to write an honors thesis, and attempting to
finish three degrees, the cost of school became rather burdensome. In
receiving the scholarship, I was able to reduce my work hours in order
to have more time to focus on studies and on preparing myself for
medical school. Without this scholarship, I would have had to take
out even more loans and would have been pressed for study time. I
cannot stress the gratitude I have for the constant support from Alpha

Receiving a scholarship from the AO¶ Foundation was a huge
blessing. Graduate school is very expensive, and my scholarship
helped to fund the first year without having to take out any loans.
Being able to attend graduate school is very important to me and
my future career as a speech language pathologist, and I am very

The Second Century Society (SCS)
was founded in 1992 to recognize
the importance of planned or deferred
giving to the Foundation. SCS members
believe strongly in the mission and
values of the Fraternity and want to

records are not sold, bartered, leased, exchanged or otherwise
provided by the Foundation to outside organizations.

AOII Foundation Ambassador
Being an AO¶ Foundation Ambassador is important to me because it
puts a face and a name to the goals and mission of the Foundation. As
an Ambassador, you can reach out to many alumnae and collegians
in your region to develop relationships and educate members about the
opportunities the Foundation provides. My favorite part of being an
Ambassador is speaking to women about how their support matters.
Whether it’s a $10 or a $10,000 gift, participating in acts of charity, is
something fundamental about being an AO¶.
