in Warsaw
Renishaw Sp. z.o.o.,
the 15-employee Polish
subsidiary of Renishaw Plc, has
officially opened a new facility
in Warsaw. Located in a rapidly
developing part of the city,
Poleczki Business Park is located
close to the international Warsaw
Chopin airport and S2 beltway.
The new facility covers over 530
sq m and includes purpose built
metrology and demonstration
rooms, allowing Renishaw to
offer enhanced commercial and
technical support to its customers
throughout the country. The
opening was also an occasion to
celebrate the 12th anniversary
of the subsidiary’s presence in
Poland.
The new demonstration
facilities offer technical support for
Renishaw's full range of industrial
metrology products, including
probe sensors for CMMs and CNC
machine tools, calibration systems,
position encoders, flexible gauging
systems, and a new line of additive
manufacturing machines. The

Luxury car maker Aston
Martin is to create
250 jobs and extend its UK
manufacturing facilities, the firm
has said. The new engineering,
manufacturing and commercial
jobs will be created over the next
few months. Aston Martin will
also invest £20m to extend its
manufacturing facility at Gaydon in
Warwickshire. The extension will
house a new chassis assembly
area, a facility to build prototypes,
new offices, and a bigger parts
storage area. The company says
it wants to substantially increase
its workforce and manufacturing
capabilities.

HQ forms part of our long-term
strategy which is focused around

Billdidit expand
Riley Surface World
has recently enabled
the sale and shipment of a
complete Delta Industrietechnik
copper/acid electroplating line for
the BDI Advanced Manufacturing
division of Billdidit, a manufacturer
based in Nova Scotia, Canada.
The redundant electroplating line
was acquired, with the help of
Riley Surface World, from the site
of a former costume jewellery
manufacturer in Ireland. It will be
used for chrome and zinc plating
by volume, and for silver and gold
plating in smaller quantities.
The system comprises three
sizes of tanks: 600, 1200 and 2400
litres. The 600 litre tanks are used
predominantly for non-electrolytic
processes, drag-out and rinse
stations. The larger tanks are used
for electrolytic stations, with either
three or six flight bars in operation
at any one time. The line, which
uses an automatic transporter
system, is due to be installed and
re-commissioned by a technical
support team from Riley Surface
World during the summer.

Good results from Heller
Machine tool manufacturer, Heller, reports
that in 2013 it recorded the second highest
turnover in the company’s history at €532.7m, beating
the average of the past 10 years by 30%. Heller says
that in the second half of 2013, order intake increased
significantly, even being considerably above the
prorated annual plan, a positive development that
continues in 2014. Notably, orders from Europe rose
to 66% against just 46% in 2012.
In the first three months of 2014, Heller reports
order intake at €187m, some 120% above the
previous year. In addition, Heller says it is now
debt free – something to celebrate in this, its 120th
anniversary year. This has been achieved as a result
of consistent ‘accounts receivable management’
among other reasons. It also provides leeway for
offering customers attractive financing solutions.

Nottingham-based
CNC profiling
specialist, Lasershape,
has installed a new Trumpf
TruLaser 5030 fibre CNC laser
cutting centre with BrightLine
technology and LiftMaster
automated load/unload. The
system is one of the first of
its type in the UK. Trumpf
BrightLine is said to represent
a breakthrough in solid state
laser cutting. For the first time it
is possible to achieve excellent
quality when cutting thick
sheets with a fiber laser (which
conventionally is best suited to
thin sheet), says Trumpf. “We
already have two Trumpf 5030
fibre laser profiling centres
with 3 kW resonators and two
Trumpf CO2 models – the
addition of the new machine
with 5 kW resonator and
BrightLine fibre technology will
create vital additional capacity,”
says Lasershape director, Tim
Leam.

Blaze of glory
Kerf Developments
is reporting two
important sales resulting from
its attendance at the MACH
2014 exhibition held recently
at the Birmingham NEC.
The company says it sold an
RUR2000 high definition plasma
cutting table from its stand to
a Birmingham company on the
first day of the show, along with
an RUR2500 high definition
plasma cutting machine to an
Irish steel fabricating company
that wants to eliminate the
cost and lead-time issues that
result from using a subcontract
supplier. The sales at MACH
add to the impressive start
to 2014 that Kerf is enjoying,
with sales levels currently
50% above the same period in
2013. The first machine sold
at MACH, to a manufacturer
of industrial fans was a great
result for Kerf, as the customer
had already selected a machine
from an alternate supplier. That
was until the company realised
that a Kerf plasma was far
more cost effective than the
air plasma machine chosen
previously.

Essex-based Harlow
Group has installed a
new £500,000 Amada FLC3015AJ
2kW fibre laser profiling centre
with MPF3FOLAJ automation
system. The company’s first
solid state fibre laser, Harlow
Group says the new machine is
some three times quicker when
processing thin sheet material
than its existing CO2 laser cutting
machines. The machine was
unveiled at a recent Harlow Group
open house (pictured).
“We’ve always been an
Amada shop throughout our 40
year history, and even though we
reviewed other technology, the
speed of the FLC3015AJ meant
we didn’t need to go elsewhere,”
says managing director Bill
Timpson. “As most of our work
is thin sheet, the fact that the
machine is three to four times
faster than our existing CO2 laser
cutting machines has enormous
benefits for both our business and
our customers, who rely on rapid
time to market.
“Aside from the speed
advantages, we are also attacking
material utilisation as there are
no clamps on the fibre machine,”
he continues. “This is obviously
helping achieve savings in
material waste, which along with
savings in energy use – some
70% less electricity consumption
– means we are recouping quickly
against our investment.”

Waterjet offers 2D
and 3D capability
Swiss sheet metalworking machine
manufacturer, Bystronic, has introduced
a modular waterjet cutting machine with a latest
generation control system that is said to be easy and
flexible to use. Called ByJet Flex, the machine can be
used for both 2D and 3D applications, and operates
with two CNC heads for straight or bevelled cutting.
Based on the successful ByJet Classic series,
the ByJet Flex is available in several
configurations up to a maximum working
area of 10 by 3 m. The machine’s
newly developed CNC system,
called ByMotion, supports all
functions and enables easy
process integration, says Bystronic.
The number of electronic
components has been minimised,
simplifying maintenance and
significantly reducing the risk of
breakdown. In addition, users can be
supplied with software updates quickly.
“A major benefit of the machine is the
new ByMotion process control, which allows
us to achieve even more precise cutting quality than
previously, particularly when profiling fine contours,”
says Ronny Retzlaff, production manager for
waterjet cutting at Genthner SystemTechnologie,
a German customer that has been using
the machine since October 2013. “The cutting
head’s traverse paths are far more sensitive
than those on our other cutting systems.”

For instance, ipShapeMate is
a tool that allows customers
and estimators to create a part
based on a parametric pattern
from a library. Not only does this
easy-to-use tool create a profile
for quoting, but it also generates
a production-ready CAD file.
Similarly, ipDrawingDoctor is
a tool to tackle the issue of
problematic CAD files. The new
feature identifies and repairs
many of the typical issues that
stop a drawing being processed
by production and CAM
systems, while ipEstimate is a
new ipLaser tool that includes
a very simple sketching tool to
approximate the outer profile
of a part. When complete,
this sketch is submitted to
ipLaser’s nesting algorithm that
provides near-instant material
consumption for the calculation

Mitsubishi Electric says
it is offering sheet metal
shops up to 1.4 times greater
productivity following the UK
launch of its eX Series laser
cutting machine that comes with
a choice of 2.7, 3.5 or 6.0 kW
resonator. The new eX Series
machine delivers lower running
costs reliability and high cutting
speeds thanks to the patented
cross-flow laser design, says the
company. Cross-flow integrates an
eco-mode that cuts running costs
by up to 90% during standby, with
eco-friendly features for power
and gas consumption.
The eX Series also integrates
Mitsubishi’s latest ‘Jet Pierce’
technology, which reduces the
processing time for mild steel plate
up to 27 mm thick by up to 30%.
The same technology combined
with improved processing speeds
– up to 50 m/min feed rates – also
reduces the processing time for thin
steel sheets by approximately 20%.
The eX Series can cut
stainless steel up to 17 mm and
aluminium alloy up to 17 mm,
both achieved using nitrogen as
an assist gas. The machine is

Following the success of
Adaptive Laser Cutting
(ALC) on its Impuls laser cutting
range, LVD says that ALC will be
installed as a standard feature
on all Sirius and Sirius Plus 4 kW
lasers. ALC technology optimises
laser cutting results automatically
in thicker mild steel materials,
says the company.
ALC technology uses dynamic
feedback to monitor and regulate
laser power, speed and assistgas pressure in real time during
the cutting process, optimising
cutting parameters and ensuring
a consistently accurate cut, high
productivity and reduced scrap.
Unlike other process control
systems, ALC does not rely
on pre-defined parameters but
measures and adapts in-process
to achieve the best cutting results,
says LVD.
ALC is suitable for processing
thicker materials in an unmanned
environment. In such applications,
machine speed is often restricted
to ensure reliability and account
for potential variations in material
properties, limiting productivity and
increasing the cost per part.
