The winning script will be produced by a professional creative team for a run at a Cape Town theatre in 2015. A second winner will have the chance to further workshop his or her play, with a third award of the Scribblers Dream, a financial prize to enable a writer to work alongside a mentor to develop his or her script. Woensdag, 26 Februarie 2014 The panel of SCrIBE judges comprises a group of seasoned theatre practitioners. For SCrIBE 2014, Imbewu is looking for new works of outstanding quality, original content and representing the range of the South African theatre landscape. The scripts should be in English, no longer than 40 pages or 80 minutes, with no more than five cast members. The Imbewu Trust’s other initiatives include the Imbewu Showcase in New York, USA. Started in 2012, when Imbewu presented Neil Coppen’s Tin Bucket Drum to great acclaim, this project aims to create dialogue between US practitioners and Imbewu, through cultural exchange. V Entries for the SCrIBE Scriptwriting Competition open on 1 March. For details visit www.imbewu arts.com. LOUISA STEYL @lounotes It was from wanting to bring her overseas convention experiences home that Manuela Gray, of Wildfire Tattoos, decided to start the Cape Tattoo Expo. “The idea came about from having travelled to all the conventions overseas, and wanting to bring that home,” Manuela says. “There was no platform to promote our industry at that level at all,” she goes on, adding: “So after meeting a lot of awesome tattooers around the world and convincing them to come to Cape Town, the first International Cape Town convention was born.” Now in its sixth year, the festival that showcases all aspects of tattoo culture has become a staple on local calendars. This year’s Cape Tattoo Expo will run from 28 February to 2 March 2014 at Cape Town City Hall. Apart from the local and international tattoo artists who will be showcasing their work, attendees can also look forward to a “Victorian Oddities” themed art exhibition and live entertainment on the Saturday night. “The idea of the expo is to provide the SA public with an environment where they can get tattooed by great artists of their choosing,” Manuela explains. “But, as important, it’s also a platform for tattoo artists to showcase their artistry, skill, and creativity in an open and social environment and for the SA public to see how varied and evolved the industry has become,” she says. “The event is of a very high standard, which of course helps to change out dated perceptions,” she explains. “But overall the stigmas are pretty out dated. We are living in a different world now, and personal expression is encouraged,” she Manuela Gray chatted to TygerBurger about this year’s Cape Tattoo Expo. PHOTO: FLYINGHORSE PHOTOGRAPHY points out. There will also be a ‘tattoo-athon’ over the coming months in aid of the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA. V Tickets for the convention cost R100 per day or R250 for the weekend and are available at www.quic ket.co.za. Weekend passes include free entry to the live music on Saturday night. V Doors open at 17:00 on Friday and at 11:00 on Satur day and Sunday. V For more information about the expo, the artists, the golf day and the ‘tattooathon’, visit www.cape tattooconvention.co.za.
