2013/2014 O U R T H E M E FO R T H E 2013/2014 S C HO O L YEA R FROM THE BOA R D C HA IR In 2013-2014, our Board of Trustees oversaw exciting progress as we worked to achieve our 2010 Strategic Vision to: • Invigorate Teachers and Curriculum • Sustain Faculty and Culture • Influence Education Quality UCDS’ Spark Team hired a marketing and web development firm to build out our online teacher professional development resources and grow our audience of self-directed teachers seeking to improve their art of teaching. The team also began the investigational stage of laying the groundwork for a Master Teacher Program. Skillful financial stewardship provided by our Board of Trustees continues to ensure our success. The sustained financial health of the school is the result of outstanding effort on the part of the Board’s Finance Committee (Michelle Goldberg, Jarrad Harford, Steve Hollomon, Howard Burton, Kobi Yamada and myself), under the direction of chair Greg Headrick, and its Investment Subcommittee (Perry Atkins, Greg Headrick, Chris Prentice, Steve Holloman, and Alex Washburn), under the guidance of chair Michelle Goldberg. UCDS financial health continues to benefit from our endowment and temporarily restricted Auction funds, as we maintain competitive teacher salaries, sustain teacher excellence through the Teacher Education Center (TEC) and support qualified families through financial aid. The value of our endowment increased slightly more than 12% from June 30, 2013 to June 30, 2014 and ended the period at $12.4 million. In keeping with the Board’s Endowment Investment and Spending Policy, we were able to release 4% of the endowment’s 4-year rolling average, or $392,621. We concluded the year with an outstanding report from our outside auditors, who expressed no concerns regarding the school’s financial operations. This strong result is a tribute to the school’s financial management team led by Head of School Paula Smith and includes Assistant Head of School Melissa Chittenden, Chief Financial Officer Betty Greene, Business Manager Charles Kapner and Learning Specialist Abby Sandberg. We end the school year with a strong leadership team, an inspiring school culture and an engaged and inclusive community of families. We thank you for your partnership and support of UCDS. ~ Janet Donelson, Board Chair A MESSAG E F R OM PAU L A Our students and teachers enjoyed a tremendous Lift this past year. Last fall, we opened our new Engineering Design Garage, the EDGe. This new classroom space was inspired by our innovative teachers, designed by architect Don Carlson and built by RAFN with funds raised over several years at our auction. Now with the ample space and new tools, our students have everything they need to take their ideas and problem solving to a whole new level, and our Specialist teachers have new opportunities to work together, designing projects where art, science, technology, engineering, music and research can collide. Over this past summer, the school was, once again, buzzing with construction activity. We completed the second phase of the EDGe project, a Tech Deck, located on the roof of the Labyrinth building. Science as well as Design and Technology classes now have dedicated outdoor space to set up projects that require sunlight and exposure to the elements. While on site, RAFN also completed a new PE classroom off the gym (with its own roll up garage door for accessibility), a new work space for our Spark Project Team and upgraded workspace for our Parent Association. In addition, we remodeled our Teacher Education Center, adding new bathrooms, a kitchen and several new offices. UCDS is fortunate to have exceptional support from our parents, grandparents and alumni. Our volunteers continue to set new records for parent engagement on so many levels in the school: events, workshops and service to our wider Seattle community. First, I would like to thank our Board of Trustees for their strategic leadership and stewardship. Our parent leadership also continues to be incredibly strong. A debt of gratitude goes to our Parent Association Officers: Adrianne Keffeler, Nikki Lundin, John Robinson, Alice Ryder, Abby Hartman, Meredith Dorrance, Katie Jordan and Adam Carroll. In addition, our Annual Campaign Chairs, David Brannon-Cirone and John Cirone and Alice and Jim Ryder, were able to set a new Annual Campaign record for our school with 99% of our families participating, and our Auction Chairs, Nikki Lundin and Cecilia Whatley, filled a new, expanded venue to host our UCDS Auction–ART ON THE EDGe. To round out a year of incredible giving, our families turned out in record numbers to build our community outside the school through our UCDServes events: DigIt! Day and SewIt! Thank you for your enduring support of UCDS! ~ Paula Smith, Head of School B OAR D O F T R U ST E E S OFFICERS Janet Donelson, Chair • Kobi Yamada, Vice Chair Greg Headrick, Treasurer • Julie Prentice, Secretary MEMBERS AT LARGE David Brannon-Cirone • Howard Burton Michelle Goldberg • Joe Gruber • Jarrad Harford Steve Hollomon • Caroline Probst • Peggy Rinne Eric Sanderson • Faye Tomlinson • Adam Tratt Dina Wampold EX-OFFICIO MEMBERS Paula Smith, Head of School Adrianne Keffeler, Parent Association President Jennifer Vary, Faculty Representative PA REN T ASSO C I AT I O N O F F I C E R S The UCDS Parent Association was led in 2013-14 by President Adrianne Keffeler and Officers Nikki Lundin, Katie Jordan, Abby Hartman, Meredith Dorrance, Adam Carroll and John Robinson. T R UST E E TR I B UTE S Peggy Rinne BOARD SERVICE 2008-2014 We are extremely grateful to Peggy Rinne for her Board and community leadership. Peggy joined the Board after stepping into leadership roles in both of our previous strategic fundraising campaigns. It was an extraordinary period in the life of the school, two ten million dollar campaigns in a decade. Peggy and her husband, Bob, Co-Chaired the UCDS Forever Endowment Campaign. Her passion for education at UCDS made her a visible ambassador for the school, in front of the community and behind the scenes. During her six year tenure as a Trustee and throughout our previous strategic planning process, Peggy provided grounded insight and gifted consensus building. She chaired our Audit Committee, served as Board Secretary and was a member of our Development Committee. In each of these efforts, Peggy inspired us to extend ourselves and to give back in ways that lift this community up, leaving it stronger for those who follow. Peggy has given the school hundreds of hours of her precious time, all while balancing her civic engagement outside of the school. Thank you, Peggy, for your extraordinary contributions, boundless generosity and delightful sense of humor. Eric Sanderson BOARD SERVICE 2008-2014 From our entire community, thank you to Eric Sanderson for serving as a dynamic force of good and a key driver in our school. By the time Eric joined the Board, he had already Chaired the most successful Auction in the history of the school, the 2007 Surfin’ Safari Auction. As a Co-Chair of the UCDS Forever Endowment Campaign, Eric created the memorable tagline that helped all of us to stay on point. We built our endowment to “fund the people” who make the biggest difference in the school—our incredible teachers and our families—by creating access through financial aid. Eric inspired us all to be passionate advocates of our mission with his talent for articulating our story, sense of humor and aplomb. The Development Committee has continued to rely on Eric’s leadership as we share our Spark initiative, when we remind our community that our project is both “the right thing, and the smart thing” for the school. Our gratitude extends to Eric’s wife, Caroline, who Co-Chaired our Endowment Campaign, for her wonderful generosity and support, and to Caroline’s father, Marshall Blume, who provided an incredible service to the school by managing the school’s assets following the market crash. For all of the energy, creativity and leadership Eric has given to UCDS, while balancing his home and professional life, our sincerest thanks to the entire family. Julie Prentice BOARD SERVICE 2007 – 2014 We are immensely grateful to Julie Prentice, who joined the Board in 2007 while she and her husband, Chris, Co-Chaired the UCDS Forever Endowment Campaign. Our goal to raise our endowment up to 10 million dollars took incredible vision and focus, and Julie spent hundreds of hours steering that campaign. It was a daunting effort, filled with highs and lows, as the market soared and then crashed just as we launched to the public. Through all of the phases of the campaign, Julie was able to raise the central questions and develop a strategy to move forward. As Chair of the Board’s Development Committee, Julie inspired us to work exceptionally hard, and she set a brilliantly high bar for all fundraising efforts to follow. Julie has contributed so generously over so many years, volunteering, leading events and inviting prospective donors into her home. She accomplished all of this balanced with the incredible work she does outside UCDS. During the UCDS Forever Endowment Campaign, Julie’s in-laws, Arnie and Deb Prentice, also became the first grandparents to give a major gift to UCDS, and Chris remains a valued member of our Board’s Investment Subcommittee. Our appreciation extends to the entire Prentice family; we owe you a huge debt of gratitude. Caroline Probst BOARD SERVICE 2010 – 2014 We have been so fortunate to have Caroline Probst serving at the Board level for the past four years. With her ability to organize on many levels at once, to see the big picture and the detail at the same time, she has pulled everyone in and given the credit to others. Caroline joined the Board after stepping up to Chair our 2010 Click on a Dream Auction and assembling the largest group of volunteers in our history. The funds raised during the two-year technology initiative that spanned the 2009 and 2010 Auctions literally transformed the way that the teachers and our students work together inside the school, ushering in a whole new phase of collaboration and innovation. As a Trustee, Caroline served as a member of both our Development Committee and our Trustees Committee, and she generously took the reins as Chair of our 100 Year Anniversary Celebration and planned the evening with such elegance and organizational power. Caroline inspires everyone around her with her incredible leadership both inside the school and in the wider community. We are deeply grateful for the positive impact Caroline has made on UCDS, and our gratitude goes also to Caroline’s husband, Brad, for sharing her precious time with us. From all of us in this community, thank you for all you have contributed to UCDS. Making Connections & Adding Depth Katie Morrison & Ben Chickadel, Specialists UCDS Science Specialist, Katie Morrison on Cooper Island, Alaska holding a young Black Guillemot Collaboration enables: Deeper investment for faculty and students Fun and engaging opportunities to design integrated projects Elevated processes and ideas that lead to deeper teacher and student learning 1. Blowin’ in the Wind As the year LIFTed off, Early Elementary classrooms soared into a study of kites: from exploring the classroom read aloud Windblowne, by Stephen Messner, to designing kite tails in Math Vitamin and to investigating the history and culture of kites. Inspiration struck us to collaborate in Science and Design and Technology to deepen our exploration of kites. For students, engaging in one topic through multiple disciplines facilitates the kind of integrated thinking crucial for navigating today’s interconnected world. Strengthening ties between specialty areas allows students to access knowledge through different pathways and gives them multi-sided tools to solve complex problems. As Specialist teachers at UCDS, we observe a positive feedback loop when we collaborate with each other, with classroom teachers and with experts in our community. Each new window into a topic reinforces the skills developed in other areas, and as our students move along an interdisciplinary thread, they realize they’ve begun to think “like the experts.” While they certainly haven’t covered every content area, they have uncovered the kind of in-depth and connected thinking necessary to push a field forward. Here, we describe three collaborations inspired by the 2013-2014 school-wide theme, LIFT. In Science, we centered our investigations on wind, an essential element for lifting kites into the sky. Since wind is moving air, we began with the properties of air. Through modeling and data collection experiments, we determined that air pushes in all directions, air takes up space, air has power, and when hot air rises cold air rushes in to create wind. Students measured wind speed with anemometers and implemented the Beaufort Scale to use visual cues to estimate wind speed. Students went on wind walks, looking for and recording evidence of rustling leaves, flapping flags and swaying trees. For each investigation, students documented their findings with drawings and teachers recorded students’ written observations. Class discussions before and after the investigation allowed students to share their predictions and results with their peers. Continued >> Later in the year, during a blustery recess, a Labyrinth student skipped over and remarked, “Look at those branches, Katie! I bet it’s a four on the Beaufort Scale today!” By applying the concepts and discoveries learned in class to their own experiences, our children are developing the tools they need to explore, understand and spark innovation in our world. In Design and Technology we used our 12-foot tall wind tunnel (left) to study the floating ability of student-crafted paper designs. As the designs LIFTed off inside the tunnel, students observed which creations made it to the top of the vertical tube. Students implemented the iterative design process while also learning about gravity, drag, surface area, air resistance, structure and mass. Many based their original constructions on their findings from their studies of the properties of air in Science. Applying what they learned, students built their own original kites. We also had a unique opportunity to visit a professional testing facility, the Kirsten Wind Tunnel at the University of Washington, reinforcing the realworld application of their studies. We learned that in addition to aircraft, the Kirsten Wind Tunnel has tested kites, cars, cyclists, speed skaters and even a model of the space needle! Concepts, vocabulary and understanding about air and wind were reinforced during Science and Design and Technology through experiments and class discussions. 2. Flying Over the Arctic With Katie 3. Lifting Boundaries, Making Forms With Ben During the 2013-2014 school year, students in the 2-3s launched a multi-disciplinary study of seabirds and climate change. In collaboration with local ornithologist Dr. George Divoky, I had the opportunity to spend part of the 2013 field season in the Arctic helping collect population data on a colony of Black Guillemots, an Arctic seabird. I loved bringing the tools and techniques used in the field back to the classroom for my students. My students got to analyze data, simulate measuring chick weights and egg size and explore the effects of changing pack ice on the ability of these birds to forage for fish. Back in the classrooms, Black Guillemots, their ecosystem and climate change appeared in Math Vitamins and in Writer’s Workshop fiction stories. Collaborations with experts like Dr. Divoky add depth, authenticity and excitement to my Science curriculum. A 4-5 collaboration between Design and Technology and Art moved between domains as students asked, “What makes a print?” They used traditional techniques such as monotype print making and Intaglio as well as contemporary processes like vacuum forming, 3D printing and CAD software to explore this question. After learning how Miro made his bronze sculptures, a student remarked on a visit to the Seattle Art Museum, “Wow! That’s how we have been casting our chocolates with the vacuum former in Design and Tech class.” Students connected Design and Tech concepts to the real world, beginning steps towards innovation. This bridge between art and tech helped Art Specialist Jessica Garrick and me expose the relationship that can exist across domains and the connectedness of subjects. Drawing from each of our strengths, we evolved our respective understanding of prints and print making. This collaboration made the project more exciting and engaging for me and my students. 2013/2014 FIN A N CIA L I N FOR M AT ION AN N UAL C A M PA I G N An incredible 99% of current families and 100% of faculty and staff gave to the campaign this year. 28 families contributed over $73,000 to our Challenge Grant to inspire our monumental community-wide participation. Thank you to our entire community for LIFTing UCDS to new heights! Co-Chairs David Brannon-Cirone and John Cirone (above right) and Alice and Jim Ryder (below right) provided energetic leadership and keen insights to propel our record-breaking year. David and John were the first alumni family EVER to chair the annual campaign. Mia and Ella, their daughters, are now attending Seattle Academy and Hamlin Robinson, respectively. “Education is the cornerstone to making it all happen, [and] UCDS was such a great experience for our girls,” David says, and he has graciously continued to volunteer his time and talent as a Trustee on the UCDS Board. Alice and Jim have two girls, Zoe and Zinnia, and they are looking forward to having a few more years at UCDS before moving on! Thank you to the Ryder and Brannon-Cirone families for their incredible leadership. Special thanks to our Challenge Grant Families: Jim and Catherine Allchin Joshua and Katherine Anderson Neil Black and Sherri Wolson David Brannon-Cirone and John Cirone Charles and Amy Carter Jennifer Cast and Elizabeth Franklin Janet Donelson and Stephen Dwoskin Eric and Jennifer Fox Suzanne Gillis and Greg Sterne Cori Glaser Rob Glaser and Maggie Savarino Brad and Michelle Goldberg Douglas Greene and Barbara Manning Alan and Abigail Hartman Dean Holmes and Kelly Larkin Brian and Adrianne Keffeler Glenn Klute and Katie Jordan Ken Lederman and Meredith Dorrance Hans and Nikki Lundin Dave Miller and Susan Takemoto Brad and Caroline Probst Craig and Amy Riter John Robinson and Maya Sonenberg Laurie and Eduardo Rosini Jim and Alice Ryder Paula and Ted Smith Alexander and Erika Washburn Edward and Cecilia Whatley AUC TI O N On a rainy Seattle evening in March, hundreds of UCDS supporters arrived at Fremont Studios to LIFT our community spirit at ART ON THE EDGe, our 2014 Auction. The spectacular event raised over $500,000 with over 450 parents, teachers and students attending the festivities. The funds raised support Teacher Excellence, Financial Aid, the summer construction of a new Tech Deck and outfitting our EDGe classroom for UCDS students. From the creative and beautiful class projects to the personal, inspiring video and the amazing array of live and silent items, the event was sophisticated and fun for everyone. At the event, fifth-graders put on a show-stopping, spoken-word performance that honored UCDS Teachers. Here’s a snippet of what they had to say: “Teachers are always urging you to try something new. They can put a spin on things and get you to see the positive side. Teachers turn work into things that kids like doing. They encourage you. They ask, ‘Is there another way to figure it out?’” A million thanks to co-chairs Nikki Lundin & Cecilia Whatley for their boundless energy and incredible vision. A special thank you also goes to Josh Taft & Cindy Gantz for creating the outstanding video and to the hundreds of volunteers who created a beautiful evening for our school. T E AC HE R E D U C ATI O N C E N TE R [The Resident Program] was a great learning experience, getting to work with so many teachers. I got to see a lot of different teaching styles. Now I get to try out a variety of approaches that I’ve seen and see what works for me. -Quynh Nguyen, UCDS Resident 2013-14 The Teacher Education Center (TEC) at UCDS is a branch of the school that provides professional development opportunities for teachers to connect with other teachers around the world. Started in honor of John Neilson in 2001, we continue to strive toward offering access to excellence in professional development. In the 2013-2014 school year, the TEC published another edition of our popular Spark educational magazine on the topic of “Fostering a Culture of Independence.” ISSUE 14 - WINTER, 2014 Fostering A Culture of Independence With a focus on learning more about social and emotional thinking, our Experienced Teacher Cohort spent the year studying the research on how social-emotional thinking intersects with the development and acquisition of academic skills. This cohort of teachers shared their findings with the entire UCDS faculty, and they worked throughout the year to involve everyone in the creation of a social thinking tool for students and teachers to use in the classroom. In addition to the publication and internal studies, the Teacher Education Center staff worked with teachers to expand our online professional development tools for educators around the world. With continued funding from the UCDS Board in 2014, the TEC group brought in a marketing and technology design firm to expand our brand and outreach. They also helped us create an online experiential professional development tool. This new resource for teachers is set to launch in the winter of 2015. U C DSE RVE S UCDServes is the Parent Association’s family community service committee. Now in its eighth year, UCDServes organizes annual events for UCDS families, who are interested in developing community service values in their children and serving together with other families. The committee selects local non-profit organizations with which to collaborate, and rather than raising funds for these organizations, UCDServes look for projects that require hands and energy! In 2013-2014, for the seventh consecutive year, our families partnered on DigIt! Day with the Nature Consortium, a group dedicated to teaching environmental lessons through the creative arts and hands-on conservation projects. This year, families also worked with ConKerr Cancer, a venture that provides cheerful, handmade pillowcases to children with chronic illness. Special thanks to parent Julie McCleery and the many families who volunteer their time and energy for these worthy community events! CDSSERVES Julie McCleery A LUM NI SP OTL I GHT C ATC HI N G UP WI T H T H E T I TCO MB FA MI LY The Titcomb siblings walked the halls of UCDS for over a decade, beginning in the late 80’s until Qxhna graduated in 2004. Since then, all have completed successful college careers; brothers Zahlen, Xtehn and Vehro attended University of Chicago, Rohre went to Dartmouth, and Qxhna is finishing up her studies at Tufts. Zahlen is currently attending THNK School for Creative Leadership in Amsterdam, which develops the next generation of creative leaders in business, entrepreneurship and innovation. When asked what he remembers most about UCDS, Zahlen says “I remember school being fun—each day I wanted to go to school and always looked forward to it… I felt like I was treated as a mature adult and not a kid. I [recently] visited UCDS and was amazed at what was going on—the new learning spaces are incredible.” With an idea and a vision rooted firmly in the belief that a successful business creates a sense of community, the Titcombs have been making waves as leaders in the Ultimate Frisbee scene for nearly ten years. The siblings started Five Ultimate in their parents’ garage back in 2005. Zahlen says problem-solving and teamwork, skills UCDS helped instill in the family, have led the company to develop a successful line of technical and casual apparel. Their success, coupled with a deep sense of responsibility to the Ultimate community, has created a loyal and committed fan base, and if you ask Zahlen, they don’t plan to slow down anytime soon. The business is smartly-run, sharply in tune with its customers, and blends the quirky aesthetic of Ultimate Frisbee with a true sense of fun. That quirkiness comes through in the tradition of honoring “unreasonable requests” made by customers when purchasing products from the Five Ultimate online store. One customer boldly asked for a dinosaur egg and the crew at Five Ultimate made it happen; nestled in the customer’s delivery box was a fake dinosaur egg: unreasonable request granted! Requests can’t always be accommodated, but that type of personalization has propelled Five Ultimate to global leader status. The business has grown, with plans to open a European office in Amsterdam next year. A deep love of the sport and an appreciation for what it represents—“high level athletics, but also sportsmanship, trust and collaboration”—keep the Titcomb family busy outside of work. All siblings have played or coached at a high level, ranging from competing in the World Ultimate Club Championships, to coaching Ultimate tactics at a Chinese military school, to playing in the newly-formed professional Ultimate league, which launched in April 2013. The Titcomb siblings have also cultivated a strong family bond that has deepened over time and served them well in business. Zahlen says, “Growing up, we split ST E L L A DU DL E Y M OVING O N CLASS O F 2005 our time between the USA and Italy, so we developed a consistency of friendship with one another. We have disagreements sometimes, but at the end of the day, we are business partners and also best friends, so it’s easy and fun to work through problems together.” Five Ultimate also gives back. In addition to donating around 10% of revenues back towards support for teams and programs, they partner with Ultimate Peace, which runs youth Ultimate camps in the Middle East. The camps help instill conflict resolution tactics and mutual respect in kids as they learn to play Ultimate from professionals. Zahlen remembers UCDS class meetings with Diane Chickadel as the springboard for learning about cooperative group consensus and trust-based learning. In Ultimate, teammates have to call and discuss their own fouls, so teamwork and collaboration is celebrated as a tool; the camps allow young players to develop skills Zahlen fondly remembers as some of the most formative of his young life. Not only does Five Ultimate serve up successful products that Ultimate teams love to wear, they build connections and are creating a rich community of employees, Ultimate players and supporters. When asked what advice he has for young UCDS students, Zahlen said “Don’t be afraid to take risks—no one else is going to change the world for you; you have to do it yourself. UCDS does a great job of engaging kids in the creative process; teachers ask questions and create dialogue around issues. I learned that you have to be flexible, respect individuality and create win-win situations for yourself. A positive attitude really helps.” Join the UCDS Alumni Association If you or your child is an alumnus, we want to hear from you! A series of events are held throughout the year, and tours and visits are welcome at any time. Stella Dudley appreciates the impact UCDS made on her educational path. Having attended schools across the Puget Sound and around the world, Stella values the foundation she gained by attending UCDS as a young student. She credits her strength in math and physics to the Math Vitamin and the brainstorming and problemsolving that she learned in UCDS classrooms. Stella brought her love of learning with her to Scotland where she attended Gordonstoun, an esteemed school of the royals, to complete her secondary education. Stella took full advantage of her two years at Gordonstoun, studying math, physics, and the arts. Upon completion in 2014 she received the prestigious Founders Award. Stella is now venturing on to Syracuse to pursue an architecture degree. Stella’s sister Laura is currently taking classes at the University of Paris, where she attends a myriad of art classes, from painting to sculpture. Their brother Donald just finished a summer internship with Pacific Crest Realty Advisors, focusing on real estate investment and analysis. Stella’s father, Donald Dudley, appreciates that UCDS gave Stella, Donald and Laura “the confidence that they could deal with a challenge and overcome it, and to not just memorize things but learn how to think through problems.” Donald says, “We are all a work in progress, but it’s about really trying to get better and grow and all of my children are committed to that concept… a spark that was ignited in them early at UCDS.” G R EE T IN G S F R O M MUMB A I : WILL HERL A N D A N D AL E XA N DR A K E Y E S We caught up with the UCDS alumni and former Resident Teachers at their new digs: Ascend International School in Mumbai, India.
