Dear Friends,
If you’re new to Vermont Hardwoods, we’d like to welcome you into our
family. That’s right, our family. We exist because everyone from our suppliers to our employees (even the retiree who insists on coming in 2-3 times
a week to sweep the warehouse), to you, our customers, make up the family
we call Vermont Hardwoods. We feel the pinch every time there is a break
down in any one of those areas – it’s the three legged stool that allows us
to be steady. For that, we thank you.

There have been some tough years, and the worst may not be behind us.
But right now it seems the sun is shining and everyone is making whatever
hay they can. We are honored to be whatever part of that you make us, and
for this, we are thankful.
As you peruse our catalog, please make note of any questions you have
about our products or policies, and feel free to call or write us. We are always happy to answer any questions you have, or provide whatever advice
we can.
Sincerely,
David and Rebecca Waldmann

We are excited to be offering quartersawn White Oak in
most of our flat profiles. This species became popular in
the early 20th century by such famous architects and designers as Frank Lloyd Wright, the Stickley family, and
many others. In addition to natural oil-and-wax and clear
lacquers, we are offering a traditional “Mission” brown as
well as a more contemporary “Charcoal” finish. See color
charts on page 7 and availability on pages 12-13.
i Just want white
Anyone who has ever worked with color before knows
how hard it is to find the “right” white. While technically
there is only one white, there are myriad shades of warmer
or cooler, pinker, greener, greyer, you-name-it variations.
Because Legion Papers’ Rising Museum board is in widespread use among those doing the kind of framing where
Vermont Hardwoods’ mouldings are used, we’ve added
two colors to complement them. Our original “White” is
best suited for their Polar White, while our two new colors
complement Rising White and Warm White. See color
chart on page 7. All three whites are available on any Ash
or Maple moulding.

Common Law of Business
Here are a few facts about North American forests:
• Six trees are planted for every one harvested in the US
• Forest growth exceeds harvesting by 47%
• Each year, hardwood volume increases by 5.72 billion
cubic feet, even after harvests, fire, insects, and disease
• The US has about the same amount of forest as in 1920
We guarantee that you will be satisfied with the
quality of both material and workmanship in
all of our products. If you are not, please notify
us at once and we will take the necessary steps
to correct the situation to your satisfaction.
However, we do reserve the right to limit such
action if you have cut, finished, or joined the
moulding in any way.
It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to
pay too little. When you pay too much, you
lose a little money - that is all. When you pay
too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of
doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying
a little and getting a lot - it can’t be done. If you
deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add
something for the risk you run, and if you do
that you will have enough to pay for something
better.
Stepped floaters are an economical alternative to the traditional two-piece L floater, but it can be somewhat
of a challenge to attach the stretcher bars into them. Offset or angle clips can be used, but that’s one more
piece of hardware to deal with. Drilling through the bottom of the floater works, but there’s not a lot of
room to do so and some are reluctant to take the chance. Our new offering provides pre-drilled holes in
the right location and angle, and we provide the screws. So now you can use them without worries.

Contrary to popular belief, wood is a sustainable resource.
Other than mahogany, our stock is United States hardwoods
which, due to regulatory programs, are considered to be at
low risk for illegal and non-sustainable harvesting. In fact,
our forests are growing in size.
Deforestation continues to be a problem among exotic
woods, such as mahogany, that are found in rainforests. The
mahogany we buy is certified by the Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC) to ensure that it comes from a well-managed
forest that is not in danger of deforestation.
It’s pretty common knowledge that trees clean the air by taking carbon dioxide out and replacing it with oxygen. However, it seems often underappreciated that, left to natural
causes, an unharvested tree will die and fall to the ground.
Then the process reverses and carbon dioxide is released
back into the atmosphere. Cutting down mature trees and
using them in goods such as houses and moulding locks in
that carbon, which helps reduce greenhouse gasses thought
to contribute to global climate change.

LENGTH
Length is a random assortment of 4’-8’ sticks; however Walnut
and Bird’s Eye Maple may be as short as 3 feet. There is a minimum of 20’ per item. Orders of less than 20’ will be billed at
Straight Cut Chop prices. Requests for specific lengths will
not be accepted.
We have the following quantity tolerances:
up to 75’
over 75’
-1’ to +4’
+/- 5%
You should expect color variations throughout all length orders, so we recommend ordering 10-25% more than you need
if purchasing to fill a specific order.
Length generally does not need to be cut for UPS, but requesting shorter lengths may save on shipping.

FRAME
A pre-assembled frame ready to pop in your glass and mounting package. Assembled with Dovetail Wedges for a strong
frame with no visible fasteners.
Handcrafted one at a time using splines of matching (or contrasting) wood, hand sanded, and finished with multiple coats
of finish for the ultimate in appearance and durability.
Smaller frames (up to about 18 x 30 Outside Dimension) can
be shipped in a standard cardboard box at no additional
charge. Larger sizes will need to have a custom made woodsided crate built at a cost of $12.50 per crate.
Maximum frame size for UPS shipment is approximately 80
united inches on the Outside Dimension (e.g. 20 x 60, 30 x 50,
40 x 40). Larger frames will need to be shipped by truck.
Please call for an estimate if you have any questions.

The Hoffmann Dovetail Joining System allows us to ship
ready-to-assemble frames. We offer dovetail wedges on
our mitered chops so you can easily assemble frames yourself instead of paying for a pre-assembled frame and the
additional shipping charges usually associated with them.
Dovetail Wedges add a flat fee to your mitered chop. For
the first one you order, we’ll waive the Dovetail Wedges
fee - just mention this promotion.
For more information about Dovetail Wedges and instructions on assembling frames with them, see page 5.

Chops
Chops and frames are cut using the Fine Art Care and Treatment
Standards (FACTS) terminology from the FRM-397 specifications. For your convenience, key points are listed on page 8.
To calculate the footage you will be billed for a chop or frame,
see instructions on page 4 or visit our website for an easy-touse calculator.

COLOR MATCHING

Chops and frames are made with every effort to ensure that
all four rails are of a similar color and grain. When possible,
we cut each chop or frame from a single piece of moulding.
Multiple chops or frames are not selected to match one another
unless specified, in which case there will be an extra charge.

CaLCuLatinG the Cost
To get an idea of how much moulding is required to make a frame, you can use our chart below. Note, however, that it is just a guideline.
If you are purchasing length to do your own chops we suggest ordering at least 10% more, and as much as 25% more if the frames are
large or if you’re ordering less than 50’.
With few exceptions, this chart displays the footage we will charge you when ordering chops from us. If you want to know exactly, call
us for a quote and we will give you the actual amount from our computer system, including all surcharges or discounts that may be applicable on your individual order (not including shipping).

HELPFUL TIP - USE OUR
WEBSITE CALCULATOR
This process can be tedious - for
an easier way, use the calculator
on our website! There is also a
calculator at the bottom of each
profile’s webpage. You can also
order from either of these pages
as well - it doesn’t get much more
convenient than that!
HOW TO CALCULATE THE COST OF A
CHOP OR FRAME
1. Calculate the United Inches of your chop or frame
United Inches = frame dimension length + frame
dimension width
(If ordering by Outside Dimension, use the
dimensions you will order with)
If ordering a Straight Cut Chop or Sight Size, add
one more inch
2. Find the width key of the moulding in question (shown below the profile drawing)
If ordering by Outside Dimension, use width key A
3. Go down the width key column in the chart below
until you find the first number that is higher than the
United Inches of your chop or frame
4. Follow the row left to the feet column - that is how
many feet you will be charged for
5. Multiply the number of feet by the cost per foot listed
in the pricing table next to the profile
6. If ordering a mitered chop with dovetail wedges, add
the fee listed below the profile drawing
7. If ordering multiple items, it is possible that you qualify for a length discount - see page 3 for details
example: 164 Oak Oil & Wax Mitered Chop 16 x 20
United Inches: 16 + 20 = 36 ; Width Key: E ; Feet: 7 ;
Price/Ft: $13.96 ; Total Price: $13.96/ ft * 7 ft = $97.72
CreatinG frames
spaCer & strainer
strip frames
Spacer may be attached with ATG tape (recommended),
glued, or just friction fit.
The strainer may be either screwed or nailed from the inside
or outside of the moulding. When ordering chopped strainer,
you can also order it pre-drilled; see page 16 for details.
A strip frame hugs the canvas. There are two ways to accomplish a strip frame: spacer or caps.
To use spacer to create a strip frame, simply place the spacer
along the side of the canvas and use nails to secure it. If you
are ordering chopped spacers to be used this way, you must
specify "inside dimensions" - we suggest ordering oversize
and trimming to fit.
To use cap moulding to create a strip frame, turn the cap upside down, set the canvas on the rabbet, and use an offset clip
to secure them together by screwing into the bottom of each.
fLoaters
usinG dovetaiL wedGes
The Hoffmann Dovetail Joining System allows us to ship readyto-assemble frames. We offer dovetail wedges on our mitered
chops so you can easily assemble frames yourself instead of paying for a pre-assembled frame and the additional shipping charges
usually associated with them.
how it works
We route triangular slots into the back of each mitered rail which
form a butterfly shape (aka dovetail) when joined. We'll ship you
a plastic piece (aka key) to fit in each slot. The wedging of the keys
provides the correct clamping pressure for the glue, and the end result is a tight, perfectly aligned joint with no marks on the face or
sides. For more information, visit vermonthardwoods.com/dovetail.
what You do
Apply glue to the rails
If ordering moulding to be used this way, you must specify
"to be used upside down" so the back of the moulding will
be checked for blemishes and finished (if applicable) instead
of the front. There will be an additional charge for ordering
moulding upside down - see page 3 for details.
Floaters are designed for stretched canvases or panels, and a floater frame has a space between the
edge of the painting and the face of the moulding. The purpose is twofold:
1. functional: Since most canvases are painted all the way to the edge you don't want to cover
any of it up
2. aesthetic: The frame literally appears to "float" around the painting - there is an actual space
between them
Lightly pound in the wedges
When using the #900, #901, or #902 moulding, the stretcher
simply lays on the built-in bottom wing, where it is usually
screwed from the bottom. Pre-drilling is available - see page 14.
On the #915 moulding the stretcher may be attached directly
to the moulding. For easier mounting, a screw eye placed
every 8"-12" can be used to form an attachment point, or a
wing may be added. An advantage of the #915 is that it can
accommodate a wide variety of thicknesses of stretcher bars.
We have four L-shaped floater profiles, #917 - #921, which are
ready to use. Alternately, you can create your own by using
the #916 moulding with a bottom shelf added; our #960-150
and #960-200 strainers will fit nicely.
When ordering chops, add your canvas size to two times the
"float space" you want and specify that as your frame size,
which will be cut Exact.

For some woods, such as Cherry and Mahogany, aging is the crowning touch. Ultraviolet light, oxidation, and handling all contribute to the patina of an old piece of wood, whatever species it is. However, Cherry and Mahogany respond to these effects more quickly and dramatically than many others. The most obvious resulting color change is
usually within the first few years, though minor changes will take place for many years.
In addition to our traditional natural finish, we offer a line of stained finishes that help achieve a similar look without
the wait time.

The Fine Art Care and Treatment Standards were
developed in the ‘90s because of a lack of standards
in the picture framing industry. There were quite a
few developed, from design (Golden Means) to
preservation glazing (UV protection) and framing
(archival mats). While there is nothing binding on
framers to use them, these standards provide a common language from which to communicate. As
such, we recognize FRM-396 and FRM-397 as they
relate to allowances for chop sizes, and terminology
for measuring. We would be happy to email you a
copy if you ask.

Caps are the staple of
many frame shops, and
there is no end to the
variations needed. While
many companies offer
“extenders”, we can easily produce profiles up to
5-1/4" tall with a 1/4" or
5/16" rabbet with no lines
or awkward joining, to
the exact depth your
project requires. Our
equipment is also capable of making singlepiece profiles up to 13"
tall, but additional setup
fees would apply.

Sometimes you just need
something really large.
Here is an example of a
profile that we run regularly for one of our customers.
There is virtually no end
to the variations of overall
size and rabbet configuration that we can produce
to meet your requirements.
Custom profiles generally
take 2-4 weeks to produce.

pre-driLLinG avaiLaBLe on step fLoaters
Pre-drilling of step floaters is now available. We recommend 1 screw per every 10 inches or part thereof, i.e. 15
x 25 would be 2x3 screws. Pricing is a base charge of $20 per frame plus $1.50 per set of holes. For example, the
previously mentioned frame would be 2 x 3 screws = $20.00 + $1.50 x (2 + 3) = $27.50. Screws are included.

pre-driLLed strainer
Installing strainer can be a chore, but not when you
specify our pre-drilling option! We use the Kreg®
pocket hole system, and provide the proper screws;
you will need a Phillips screw driver for installation
(diagram on page 5). Pre-drilling is available on any
mitered or joined strainer.
We recommend 1 screw per 10” of rail with a minimum of 2 per side (21” x 37” would be 3 x 4).
Now trim the second piece so it is ¼" shorter than the frame dimension and put it in backwards, ensuring that the point is
pressing tightly against the first piece of spacer; this piece can
also be up to about 1/8" undersize
Standard drilling is 3” from each end with any center
holes distributed evenly (+/- 1”). Special drilling instructions per your request is also available at no additional charge.
Repeat step 2 on the third piece
There is a base charge of $15.00 per strainer, plus
$1.00 per pair of holes:
3 x 4 screws = $15.00 + $1.00 * (3 + 4) = $22.00
For the last piece you will finally have to make a precise cut, so
that it fits tightly in between pieces 1 and 3. However, since there
are points on both ends it can be a whisker (that's a technical
term that means a very small amount) long and you will still be
able to force it snugly in
If ordering cut-to-size spacer with your chop or frame, you will need
to order it "cut long." This is because we assume you will be putting
it in mitered and only finish the inside face; when ordered "cut long"
we will leave enough extra for you to re-cut the miters.

When you have a 30 x 40 frame to make and the client
insists on a ½” wide moulding, we’ve got you covered.
Our mostly deep mouldings were designed from the
beginning to accommodate strainers – a structural addition that goes behind the artwork package. For really
big frames we can also provide cross bars (see page 17
for details). Pre-drilling for easy assembly is also available – see the bottom of this page for pricing.

Cross Bars
Strainers on large frames may need extra support to handle the tension.
Cross bars are available, even in both directions if needed. Cross bars
are butt joints, and may also be pre-drilled with pocket holes or routed
for dovetail wedges.

The Hoffmann dovetail system is also available for your
mitered stretchers. This can be especially helpful on supersize canvases that would be impractical to transport assembled, or for even medium sized ones that need to be shipped.
Cross bars are butt joints, and will also be routed for dovetail
wedges.

Yankee heritaGe
LookinG for a BudGet Line? Look no further!
Many people love our natural solid hardwoods, but can’t justify spending the
money for the ultra-high yield stock that has become our standard. For those who
don’t demand long lengths that are straight and clear, we challenge you to find a
better value than our Yankee Heritage lineup.
This product is perfect for those doing mostly smaller pieces (less than 20” x 24”)
or if you want more “character” (the trademark of solid wood) in your frames.
Note, however, that this is not just “the junk.” We scrap material we don’t think is
useable for anything. In fact many people tell us our Yankee Heritage is as good
as or better than some companies’ regular stock.
Here are some key points:
•All Yankee Heritage mouldings are machine sanded the same as our
regular mouldings
•Yankee Heritage is only available as Raw Length in the profiles listed
•Availability of the Yankee Heritage line is not limited to stock on
hand or bundle sizes - you can order as much as you like, whenever
you like (see Minimums to the right)
Try an order today and see the VALUE of Yankee Heritage.
Lead time
While we may have some in stock, often the stock will need to be run to order,
which means that typical lead time will be 1-2 weeks.
minimum order
You must order at least 100’ per item (e.g. 100’ 120 Maple and 100’ 132 Cherry, not
50’ each of 120 Maple and 132 Cherry). However, if we have less than 100’ in stock
you may take what we have.

Pine makes a unique and beautiful flooring or paneling. Each board is hand selected and milled with a square edge for
traditional face nailing. Tongue and
Groove is available upon request. Heart
pine is also available.
Solid hardwood floors have long been the
choice of discriminating homeowners.
They’ve stood the test of time, and each
of our grades (Country, Select, Prime)
provide generations of service with
hardly any maintenance.
Thermory® is solid Ash flooring that’s
not engineered, but heat- and steamtreated. It’s the only solid wood flooring
guaranteed for use over radiant heating
and for gluing to concrete. Now available
in exterior decking.
We custom make stair treads, risers and
all sorts of architectural trim such as baseboard, casing and crown moulding to
match or contrast with your flooring material. See our website for more information.
