Sept 2015 - Broome Camp School
Broome Camp School High Tide Monthly Newsletter Step into Adventure Show Respect, Be Responsible, Challenge Yourself. Date: 11th September 2015 Issue: 5 Camp School News We have now entered into the season of Wirlburu, one of the six seasons in the Yawuru calendar. Students plant seeds, make paper bricks, pick fresh produce and deliver it straight to our kitchen, ready for dinner that night. With our new Yawuru Cultural Induction compulsory for camps when attending the Broome Camp School, students are learning about all aspects of the Traditional Owners of the Broome area, including an interactive power point which teaches the students Yawuru language including a welcome, places, seasons, animals, vegetation and even our three values Show Respect, Be Responsible and Challenge Yourself in Yawuru. In line with the Australian Curriculum and the CrossCurriculum Priority of Sustainability, the staff here has worked hard in various partnerships with KTI and Bunnings to establish a Community Garden. The aim of the garden is to teach students the importance of healthy eating, how to grow your own vegetables, the 3 “R’s” Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and how an aquaponics system with Barramundi works. The aquaponics system is powered free from the sun and wind with a solar and wind turbine power supply, teaching students the importance of renewable energy. Aquaponics system designed and built by students at KTI. All run from solar and wind power source. See you soon at the Broome Camp School! Tom Wood - “Go the Eagles!” Broome Camp School Manager Dampier Primary School Camp We recently had the privilege of taking our Year 6 students on camp to Broome Camp School. I must Show Respect, Be Responsible, Challenge Yourself. say we were impressed from the get go. After a 10 hour long bus trip we were greeted by the enthusiastic camp manager Tom Wood. The values that underpin the camp school of SHOW RESPECT, BE RESPONSIBLE and CHALLENGE YOURSELF were evident and essential from the moment you stepped onto the camp school to the moment you left and our students thrived embracing them. In these times where students are labelled as being less resilient, lack persistence and fail to get along with each other our group proved these assumptions wrong and excelled in everything they undertook and this can all be linked back to the core values of the camp school. Students tried different things from the numerous activities, to the wonderful food served by the kitchen. Our students worked well in team situations be it at the surf carnival or participating in the milk crate challenge. Everyone overcame their fear of heights to reach the summit of the Prusiking course where they could have easily quit. The tours available to us were captivating, professionally run and led to questioning that our students amazed us with. SUP’s are Broome Camps Schools newest Cable Beach Challenge. BCS Staff Profile Name: Sam Fahey Role at the Camp School: Gardener and Handy Person Best thing about my job: The location, beautiful school grounds, the kids and workmates. My Favourite Activity: Prusiking, I love to see the students challenge themselves on the vertical rope climb. Along with “Raft Building” we have introduced “Ballista Building” focusing on working as a team and knot tying. Contact Broome Camp School: 7 Millington Rd I would highly recommend anyone looking to take students on a journey where they come away better for it to attend a camp at Broome Camp School. Tom and his team skills in getting the best from the students were outstanding and the questions of ‘What did you learn?” and ‘What did you find challenging?’ really made the students think. Thank you to all the staff at Broome Camp School we have already booked for next year.
