HEARING PROTECTION To avoid potential hearing damage and maximise comfort it is essential to select the correct hearing protection for your work activity and environment. Provided they are used correctly, they often exceed attenuation afforded by ear muffs. Corded versions for carrying around the neck and detectable plugs for use in the food industry are also available. 134 - 137 Semi Aurals Semi aurals are ideal for supervisors and managers frequently moving in and out of noise hazardous areas, as they can be stored unobtrusively around the neck when not in use. Earmuffs Ear defenders are the traditional method of ear protection but the attenuation characteristics of each model need to be studied before a recommendation is made. Legislative Information The current Noise At Work Regulations which became mandatory in 2006 require employers to assess noise levels and provide ear protection where noise levels are between 80dB(A) and 85dB(A), although their use is at the employee’s discretion. Where noise levels exceed 85dB(A) the employer must supply and enforce the use of suitable hearing protection. Where possible, in environments with noise levels above 80dB(A) steps should be taken to reduce noise using soundproofing, sound boxes, sound baffles etc. Where this is not possible, suitable hearing protection should be provided.
