Our Mission

community’s
quality of life through
positive experiences in
parks, recreation, and
cultural arts.
The Champaign Park
District is a special district
of local government with
its own financial and
legal responsibilities. It is
governed by five elected
residents of Champaign
who give their services to
the community. The Park
Board holds its regular
meetings on the second
Wednesday of each month
at 7p at the Bresnan
Meeting Center, 706
Kenwood Road. Residents
are invited to attend and
are welcome to make
suggestions or comments
to improve the programs
or facilities offered. The
Champaign Park District’s
60 parks total over 700
acres. Fourteen facilities
are available for a wide
variety of recreational

Recreation (CUSR) to make the necessary
accommodations. Inclusion of individuals
with all abilities into Park District programs
allow experience, education, acceptance,
and growth of those involved. For more
information on CUSR, visit page 65 or
cuspecialrecreation.com.

REGISTRATION / PAYMENTS & FEE STRUCTURE
THE DANCE ARTS SCHOOL
The Dance Arts School began in 1976 and
teaches classes in Ballet, Contemporary,
and Irish Dance from preschoolers to adults.
The goal of the school is to provide a safe
instructional setting which fosters all areas of
the performing arts. The faculty strives to instill
appreciation for dance through professional
experiences and instruction shared with each
student. It is our hope that the dance training,
discipline, and other skills learned in our classes
will stay with each student throughout life.
Students enrolled in Dance Arts Core Ballet Classes and Irish Dance classes are
registered for the fall and spring semesters and do not need to re-enroll in the spring.
Fees are based on a nine month program (September – May) and broken into even
monthly payments. First month’s payment is due at time of registration. Monthly
fees are non-refundable and not prorated for holidays, vacations, illnesses or snow
days. Tuition is due by the 20th of the month in advance for the following month. Late
payments will be assessed a $10 fee. Additional month’s payments may be paid in
advance at any time. All other classes will be registered for by semester. To withdraw
your child from the program, submit a two week written notice prior to the start of
the next month to the Director of Dance. If you do not provide a two week notice, you
will be responsible for payment of the following month.
OUR FACULTY
The ballet faculty members have each received
professional training and collectively represent a
wide spectrum of performance and educational
backgrounds. Erin Wukitsch, WIDA joined with
the Dance Arts School in 2014. She is the owner/
instructor of Isle of Erin Irish Dance Studio in
Peoria, Illinois, and is a World Champion (All
Irelands in Killarney, Ireland) dancer herself.
The ballet accompanists are professionally
trained pianists with specialties in performance,
theory, composition, and more. The expertise of
both the instructors and accompanists greatly
enhances the quality of the school.
PERFORMANCES
Jessica Bengtson, Graduate of National Academy
of Arts
The Dance Arts School performs annually at the Virginia Theatre and also additional
outreach venues. Performances are an exciting and rewarding opportunity for students
to present the product of a year’s work and to experience the stage. Due to rehearsal
schedules, only students enrolled in Fall classes Level 2 and up, will be cast in the
Virginia Theatre performance, with artistic director’s approval. An initial fee of $50
is built into monthly billing for performance and costume fees. There is a $20 fee per
additional costume after the first one for students who are in more than one piece in
the performance. Deadline for payment on additional costumes will be determined by
the director. Outreach performances do not require costume fees.

Dance Class Descriptions
BEGINNING EDUCATION
CREATIVE MOVEMENT
Ages 3-4
Our Creative Movement classes are for our youngest dancers.
Jumping in puddles and soaring like birds, the students will move
through their imagination in a fun-filled class that will strengthen
their gross motor skills. Classwork will also include exercises to help
with coordination, body and spatial awareness. Students may wear
leotards with proper ballet shoes or comfortable clothing with bare
feet. Hair should be pulled off the face into a ponytail.
CORE BALLET CLASSES
LEVEL 6 (8–10 YEARS OF TRAINING)
Ages 14+
Artistry and performance will be insisted upon at this level. Further
development of strength and control of the trunk and pelvis in adage
work will become secure to facilitate an above 90 degree leg. This
control of the body’s core will be further called upon to perform
the correct throwing action of a Grand Battement and also in grand
allegro. Double Pirouettes should be easily attained at this level.
Pointework will be incorporated into this class if the student has met
the guidelines set by the Dance Arts School staff.
The Dance Arts School staff strongly encourages pre-pointe shoes or
pointe shoes (if student has met the guidelines) in Levels 5 and 6.
Practice tutus are encouraged in Levels 5 and 6.
LEVEL 1 AND LEVEL 2 (1-2 YEARS OF TRAINING)
Ages 5 - 8
These first 2 years of training will develop the student’s physical
skills, stamina, creativity, expression, and musicality using a range of
sounds and musical styles. This strong foundation prepares students
for a successful transition to more formal ballet classes. In Level 1 &
2, students should be able to respond to the elements of music and
perform expressively, and be able to demonstrate use of appropriate
movement dynamics, coordination, elevation, and awareness of
space. Level 1 students have the choice of 1 or 2 days a week of
training. Use both ID numbers if you choose twice a week.
LEVEL 3 (3–4 YEARS OF TRAINING)
Ages 8 - 10
The training received in Level 3 will encourage the development of an
appropriate and sound technique. Each year of training identifies and
teaches the necessary skills that result in secure technique such as
core stability, weight placement, turn-out, and line, while beginning
to hone the student’s awareness of artistry and dynamics.
LEVEL 4 (5-6 YEARS OF TRAINING)
Ages 10 - 12
Students will be expected to demonstrate consolidated technical skills,
and an increased range of movements and sequences of increased length
and complexity. They should also show a clear understanding of the
mechanics and purpose of the required vocabulary. Students should
show the ability to sustain an appropriate sensitivity to varying musical
qualities. Technically clean Pirouettes will be asked for, and speed in
petit allegro work will increase.
LEVEL 5 (7-8 YEARS OF TRAINING)
Ages 13+
In adage movements, instructors will be watching for the development

CENTENNIAL PARK
SPALDING PARK
Centennial is one of Champaign’s largest and most popular parks. It is home to Sholem
Aquatic Center, Leonhard Recreation Center, Lindsay Tennis Courts, and Prairie Farm.
Spalding Park is one of the CPD’s best
kept secrets. Although it’s not located on
a major street like most of the CPD’s other
community parks, Spalding Park is just as
accessible and offers a variety of amenities
for the whole family, including a skatepark.
Crescent Drive & Kirby Avenue
Harris Avenue & Harvard Street
DODDS PARK
Mattis Avenue & Parkland Way
If you are into sports, then Dodds Park is for you!
A 7-diamond softball complex, 12 soccer fields, disc
golf, a playground, and concession stands attract
athletes and spectators alike.
WEST SIDE PARK
State Street & University Avenue
West Side Park is unique for its historical
elements. Visitors enjoy the 100-year-old
restored “Prayer for Rain” statue and
fountain in the park’s center, as well as the
Capron Memorial Statues, Tootsie, Double
Dutch for Joy, the Lincoln Megalith and
Bilbrey Bandstand.
DOUGLASS PARK
Fifth & Grove Streets
This neighborhood park truly caters to the
community. It also houses the Douglass Community
Center, Douglass Annex and the Douglass Branch
Library. With recent additions such as a splash pad,
fitness trail, and new playground and pavilion, this
park guarantees hours of family fun!
ZAHND PARK
South of Staley & Windsor Roads
HESSEL PARK
Lighted baseball fields and a football field
are only part of the attraction of Zahnd Park.

with the use of the dog park. Owners
are responsible for the actions of
their dogs and may be subject to
state laws and local ordinances
concerning dangerous or vicious dogs.

CHAMPAIGN BARK DISTRICT
Chase Your Tail Dog
Jog/Walk is Nov. 21
See p.48 for details
Location: Southeast Corner of Windsor and Rising Road
Hours: Open daily from dawn to dusk seven days per week year round
The Champaign Bark District is a 7-acre space for your dog to run off-leash and interact with other
dogs and humans. This park features a 4 foot fence, double-gated entry area, separate areas for
large and small dogs, parking lot, dog wash station, drinking fountains, and dog waste stations.
BARK DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP
Purchase a one-year membership for your dog at the Leonhard Recreation Center or Springer
Cultural Center. Users found without proper membership tags will be asked to leave and
may forfeit future park privileges. Bark District memberships are reciprocal with Urbana Park
District’s dog park, so your membership is valid at both dog parks.
Dog park membership carries with it responsibilities to all dog park users and the public at
large. Not all dogs are good candidates for dog park play and interaction with a wide cross
section of dogs. If your dog is shy about meeting new people, children or dogs, it might not
be a good candidate for the dog park. In addition, dog park users must be able to maintain
control over their dogs even when off leash. All dogs at the dog park should be responsive to
their owners’ calls.
Requirement for Membership
Obtain the following information – it is required to complete your membership registration.
1. County registration form (or other proof of rabies vaccination). Current vaccination record
from the vet (proof of distemper vaccination).
2. Pay the membership fee. Resident and non-resident rates apply. See page 78 for
information about resident and non-resident rates and the reciprocal agreement with
Urbana Park District. Membership is for one calendar year (January 1 to December 31).
Fees are not pro-rated, with exception to mid-season discount.
One Dog (Resident): $38
One Dog (Non-resident): $57
Each Additional Dog: $6
Replacement Tag: $10
August 1 - November 30
memberships are discounted
half price.

and exiting the park. Members must
have a leash at all times. Members
must also carry a photo I.D. with
them and present upon request.
5. Dogs may not be left unattended or
out of sight range or voice command.
A member age 16 or older must be
present at all times and is solely
responsible for the actions of their
dogs.
6. Children must be at least 6 years
old and accompanied by a parent or
guardian to enter the park.

aggressive or dangerous behavior are

barking is strongly discouraged.

permitted in the park.
9. Dogs less than 4 months old are not
permitted in the park.
10. Members must immediately pick up
after their dogs.
11. Food (people food, dog food or dog
treats) is not allowed in the park.
12. Smoking is not permitted inside the
dog park.
3. Place the dog park ID tag on your dog’s collar. This tag must be present at all visits to the
dog park and may be checked by Park District staff.
13. Members are limited to three dogs
per visit.
Daily Admission
Want to check out the dog park before purchasing your membership? Daily admission passes
are available at the dog park. Sign the waiver and release form and place it along with your $5
in the envelope provided. All dog park rules apply to daily pass holders.
14. Dogs, owners and users creating a
disturbance or violating posted rules
must leave the dog park if requested
by law enforcement personnel, park

Goals and Objectives
The philosophy behind the youth sports program is to
provide an atmosphere that focuses on fun, opportunity,
sportsmanship, and instruction. Sports can play a positive
role in our children’s development, fostering physical skills
and emotional maturity.
Children should have a place where they can have fun
participating in organized activities in a healthy, safe
environment. We strive to provide quality instruction in
the fundamentals of the sport while emphasizing fun
and sportsmanship over winning. By creating a positive
experience for the children we hope to encourage a
lifetime of involvement.
You can help. We need the cooperation and assistance of
parents and coaches to promote and demonstrate these
values.

WHAT IS CUSR?
CUSR was formed through a cooperative agreement with the
Champaign and Urbana Park Districts with the mission of providing
quality recreational programs and services for Champaign-Urbana
residents with special needs. Participants of all ages have the
opportunity to explore new areas of interest, make new friends, and
learn lifelong skills.
AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
(ADA)
CUSR complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act which
prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. CUSR will make
reasonable accommodations in recreation programs to enable
participation by an individual with a disability who meets essential
eligibility requirements. The recreation programs offered by CUSR
will be available in the most integrated setting appropriate for each
individual.
What’s better than a cupcake with
friends? Or a fundraiser that supports
kids and adults with disabilities who
just want to have fun? Why not have
both! The CUSR Cupcake 5K is going
to be one sweet time! This is a timed,
accessible race ending with a delicious
cupcake. Funds raised will go into CUSR’s scholarship fund, which
supports individuals who need financial assistance to access CUSR
programs and services. Runners, walkers, and registrants who use a
wheelchair are welcome. All registrants must provide a valid email
address in order to receive crucial pre-race information. Updated
information will also be posted on CUSR’s Facebook page.
The event will go on rain or shine unless the weather poses unsafe
conditions. No refunds will be given in the event of cancellation due
to unsafe weather conditions. Remember, all proceeds go directly to
CUSR’s scholarship fund.

NATURAL AREAS
#explorechampaignparks
Embrace Your Natural Areas!
Research shows that being outdoors not only reduces stress, it also makes
us happier! We have a multitude of natural areas that provide many
opportunities for you to get out and get happy. Natural areas can be found
in Heritage Park, Scott Park, Porter Family Park, and Sunset Ridge Park.
These parks feature plant life that is native to the Midwest, and it is quite
a sight to see! From bright, flowering plants to tall, wispy grass, you won’t
regret stepping outside no matter what the season.
As our season winds down, keep an eye out for our autumn prescribed burn
schedule. We will set our sights on portions of Porter and Sunset Ridge Parks.
Interested in taking on a more active role? Make the call to Mike Davis or
Randy Hauser at 217-819-3817 and become a charter member of our Natural
Areas Volunteer Initiative! Volunteer work sessions will feature staff-led
invasive plant removal, seed collecting, and a host of other activities that will
improve the quality of our natural area escapes. No experience necessary; all
that’s required is a love of the land and in some cases a love of the water!
72 N 2015 Fall Program Guide
Natural areas are great not only for our
happiness, but monarch butterflies love it
as well. Due to a variety of factors, these
butterflies have experienced a huge drop
in population. Within the parks listed and
others, we have increased our plantings of
many native species on which the monarch
rely! Milkweed is one of the most important
food sources for monarchs and we have
three different species: butterfly weed,
swamp milkweed, and common milkweed.
Visit one of these parks in full bloom and
you are very likely to see a large group
fluttering about the plant life!

TREE & FLOWER PROGRAMS
Tree Programs
Champaign Park District plants our program trees during the spring
and fall. Spring tree examples include: Red Maple, River Birch, all Oaks,
Canada Red Cherry, Red Bud. Fall examples include: Norway Maple,
Sugar Maple, Hackberry.
Deadline: Spring (March 1); Fall (September 1)
Questions: [email protected] or 217-819-3850
GROWING TOGETHER TREES
The Growing Together Tree is a program for parents
or soon-to-be parents to adopt a tree that has been planted in a
Champaign Park District park during the year of their new child’s
birth or adoption year. Together they grow; child and tree.
FLOWER ISLANDS
The Flower Island program is a cooperative beautification effort
between local businesses and the Park District. This unique program
allows businesses to not only have a personal flower bed near
their site but to also assist with the sponsorship of beds on public
property (schools, right-of-ways, etc.).
Each year the local business pays a fee to the Park District. Half this
amount contributes to the cost of their bed(s) and the remainder is
used for the Flower Islands on public property. Hence, they enhance
the beauty of the community twice. Services included for the annual
fee are design, bed preparation, planting, maintenance, and fall
removal.
Enrollment: September – November
Questions: [email protected] or 217-819-3817
Those who adopt a Growing Together Tree receive an infant t-shirt,
a certificate, and a map with their tree’s location. There is no fee,
however a donation of $200 to the Champaign Parks Foundation will
purchase a 9 x 5 cast bronze plaque to personalize the tree in the
park. Space is limited to 150 characters.
CELEBRATION TREES
Life is full of occasions to celebrate – the lives of loved ones, weddings, anniversaries, retirements, etc. The Champaign Park District’s
Celebration Tree program offers opportunities to plant a tree in one
of our parks to recognize those moments. See box below for prices.
MEMORIAL TREES
Honor the life of a loved one with a Memorial Tree planted in one of
our parks that will provide shade and happiness to all who visit. See
box below for prices.
A donation of $250 to the Champaign Parks Foundation,
covers the cost of the tree, the installation by staff, and the
maintenance of the tree for the duration of its life.
An additional donation of $200 will purchase a 9 x 5 cast bronze
plaque to personalize the tree in the park. Space is limited to
150 characters.
Participants will receive a certificate and a map of the tree’s
location within the park. A list of available species and parks is
available.
Adopt-A-Park
The Adopt-A-Park program was developed by the
Champaign Park District in 1982 after a class at
Robeson Elementary School inquired about adopting
the park near their school.
The purpose of the program is to encourage people in
a park neighborhood to assume some responsibilities
for their adopted park. This helps maintain and
program the park above the level that the Champaign
Park District is able to achieve on its own. Adopted
parks build community support and often become
the focal point of neighborhood activities. The park
programs benefit both the Park District and the
adopting group.
If you are interested in adopting a park or would like
more information, please call 217-398-2550 or visit us
at champaignparks.com.

REGISTRATION
REGISTRATION DATES
Register in person at any Champaign Park District facility, with the
exception of Bresnan Meeting Center, by mail or online at
champaignparks.com. Champaign & Urbana Park District residents
may begin registering immediately. Non-resident registration begins
Monday, July 20, 2015.
PROOF OF RESIDENCY
Proof of residency must accompany all registration. Please present
one of the following:
• Home address imprinted on check
• Driver’s license
• Voter registration card
• Other legal proof of residency
FEES: RESIDENT/NON-RESIDENT (R/NR)
Residents living within the boundaries of the Park District regularly
support park facilities and programs through property taxes. People
living within the Champaign and Urbana Park District boundaries
pay the “resident (R)” fee. Persons residing outside these districts
will pay 50% more than the resident rates – “non-resident (NR)”. Fees
charged for programs are used to offset part of the costs for special
instructors, facility costs and program supplies.
FEES: NON-RESIDENT OPTION
Program participants living outside the boundaries of the Champaign
and Urbana Park Districts have an option of paying 50% more than
the resident rates for each program registration or paying a yearly
fee and the resident fee for each program.
The yearly fee is computed on the assessed valuation of the nonresident’s home. The yearly fee is this valuation multiplied by the
current tax rate of the Champaign Park District. The term of the
payment coverage is from May 1 to April 30 of the following year. A
person wishing to pay the yearly fee should bring a copy of the most
recent tax bill to the Bresnan Meeting Center for computation of the
fee. To receive the same privilege, non-resident renters may pay a
flat fee of $50.
The non-resident annual fee option is not available to persons
residing adjacent to the Park District boundaries. They, however,
have the option of annexing their property into the Champaign Park
District.
DEADLINES
Program registration deadlines are established to give participants
a date by which they should be registered. If enrollment is almost
high enough to conduct a class, the registration deadline may
be extended. If you missed the deadline, call 217-398-2550 to get
information on possible deadline extensions.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONS/REFUNDS
Day Camps: A chance to cancel from an all-day camp without paying
more than the required deposit will only be given through five (5)
business days before the start of the session. After that, the full fee
will be charged to the participant and the spot in the class will be
opened to those on the waiting list.
Programs with Monthly Billing: Two weeks notice in writing is
required, or guardians are responsible for payment for the following
month. More information is given in the Parent Handbook.
All Other Programs: Refunds will be given only through the second
meeting of any program, unless otherwise noted above. There will be
a $5 service charge due to participant cancellation (per participant/
per occurrence) unless otherwise noted.
Exceptions: If the Park District cancels a program due to minimum
registration not being met, full refunds will be given. Pro-rated
amounts will be refunded to participants if a class is cancelled by the
Park District after it has begun. If a participant experiences a medical
problem which prohibits program participation, the refund will be a
prorated amount based on the number of sessions remaining in the
program.
PROGRAM WAITING LISTS
Programs may fill. If this is the case, please ask to be placed on a
waiting list.
DISHONORED CHECKS
A $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned by the
bank for any reason.
PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS
Because some residents are unable to participate in recreation
programs due to economic hardship, the Champaign Park District
offers scholarships to reduce certain fees and charges.
Scholarship applicants are not guaranteed fund availability, program
registration or choice of program location. Early applications are
given priority. Applications are available at the Bresnan Meeting
Center and can be mailed upon request. Need is the primary
criterion upon which scholarship applicants are considered.
CHILD CARE RESOURCE SERVICE (CCRS)
CCRS helps income-eligible parents who are working and/or going to
school to pay for their child care. Based on parents’ family size and
income, working families whose incomes are at or below 50% of the
state median income level may be eligible to apply. Processing can
take up to 10 business days. Please pick up an application from CCRS.

and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety.
However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering
for Park District programs/activities must recognize that there is an
inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational
activities/programs.
Recreational activities/programs are intended to challenge and
engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each
participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction,
medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk
of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/
program. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be
foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, participants
must understand that certain risks, dangers and injuries due to
inclement weather, slipping, falling, poor skill level or conditioning,
carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects,
inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision,
instruction or officiating, and all other circumstances inherent to
indoor and outdoor recreational activities/programs exist. In this
regard, it must be recognized that it is impossible to guarantee
absolute safety.
You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward
are physically fit and/or skilled for the activities contemplated by this
agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant,
disabled in any way or recently suffered illness, injury or impairment, to
consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.
WAIVER AND RELEASE OF ALL CLAIMS AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK
Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the identified programs/activities, you will be expressly
assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might
sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with said programs/activities (including transportation
services/vehicle operation, when provided).
I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risks of physical injury to participants in these programs/activities, and I voluntarily agree to
assume the full risk of any and all injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity, that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of said
participation. I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (or accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result
of participating in these program/activities against Champaign Park District, Champaign and Urbana Special Recreation, and Urbana Park District,
including their respective officials, officers, employees, and volunteers.
I do hereby fully release and forever discharge Champaign Park District, Champaign and Urbana Special Recreation, and Urbana Park District
from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me or my minor child/
ward and arising out of, connected with, or in any way associated with these programs/activities.
I have read and understand the above important information, warning of risk, and waiver and release of all claims and assumption of risk.
