premiere of Matilda The Musical, the story of one
small girl with an extra big imagination. Based on
the classic Roald Dahl novel, this profound
musical takes you on a journey with the mighty
Matilda as she fights for what she believes in and
finds the strength within herself to take a stand.
Matilda The Musical has won 50 international
awards, including four Tony Awards®, and
continues to perform to sold-out crowds on
Broadway and London’s West End. I am so
thrilled to share this production with Houston
audiences – this show is loved by all ages and has
a great message for everyone.

Welcome to this exhilarating production
of Matilda the Musical. We are incredibly
excited to bring this widely acclaimed
production to Houston audiences!
Written by Dennis Kelly, with music and
lyrics by Tim Minchin, Matilda the Musical
began as a twelve-week run produced by
the Royal Shakespeare Company in
Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK, in November
2010. The musical premiered at the
Cambridge Theatre in the West End in
October 2011, at the Shubert Theatre on
Broadway in April 2013, and at the Lyric
Theatre in Sydney, Australia, in July 2015.
The show won seven Olivier Awards in
2012, including Best New Musical.
Additionally, the musical won four awards
at the 2013 Tony Awards®, including the
Tony Award® for Best Book of a Musical.
Matilda the Musical currently runs
simultaneously in London’s West End, on
Broadway, and in Sydney, Australia, and
the production is now touring the United
States with Theatre Under The Stars
proudly being one of the tour’s hosts.

Dahl’s short stories are distinguished
by their unexpected endings, and he is
renowned for his use of unsentimental,
dark humor in his works for children.
Dahl’s children’s books include James

Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The
Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The BFG,
George’s Marvellous Medicine, and
The Twits.

President/CEO
Artistic Director
John C. Breckenridge joined Theatre
Under The Stars in 1990 to oversee TUTS’
rapidly-expanding operations. In 1994 he
assumed the role of Producer and then in
March 1999, he took over the additional
duties of Chief Operating Officer. In
September 2006, he became TUTS’
President and CEO. In his 23 years with
TUTS, Mr. Breckenridge has overseen
more than 175 productions, including the
world premieres of the Kopit/Yeston
Phantom , James Michener’s Sayonara ,
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast , and Jekyll
& Hyde . He also served as General
Manager of the pre-Broadway tour of
Annie Warbucks and as co-producer of
the tours of Deaf West Theatre’s Big River
and 9 to 5: The Musical . He served as
TUTS’ representative on the Design/
Development Committee for the Hobby
Center. Prior to joining TUTS, Mr.
Breckenridge spent ten years on the road
in various management and technical
roles on tours including The Magic of
David Copperfield , The Unsinkable Molly
Brown , Jesus Christ Superstar and
Oklahoma! In all, his career has taken him
to 48 states and nine foreign countries.
Mr. Breckenridge has a degree in Lighting
Design and Technical Theatre from the
University of Michigan. He is a past
President of the National Alliance for
Musical Theatre and serves on the boards
of The Hobby Center and the Houston
Downtown Alliance. He serves on the
Executive Committees of the Independent
Presenters Network and the Broadway
League, where he is also a Tony voter. He
volunteers with the Airport Rangers, a
community-based mounted security
patrol that rides the perimeter of the
11,000 acre George Bush Intercontinental
Airport. He is a member of class XXVII of
The American Leadership Forum and has
been a proud member of the International
Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees
since 1984.
His family includes wife
Michelle and children, Andrew, Jessica
and Jet.
Bruce Lumpkin joined the staff at Theatre
Under The Stars in July 2012 as Artistic
Director to maintain artistic oversight of
TUTS’ producing operations, to provide
creative direction to TUTS’ Humphreys
School of Musical Theatre, and to enhance
TUTS’ voice in the arts community. In
2013, he launched TUTS’ newest venture,
TUTS Underground—a series featuring
ground-breaking,
alternative,
and
affordable new musicals.
PLAYBILL
After earning his BFA from the University
of Houston, Bruce got his start in theatre
at TUTS as the resident director of the
Humphreys School. He soon caught the
attention of Tommy Tune, who recruited
Bruce to work on several Broadways titles
including Grand Hotel, My One and Only,
Nine, Stepping Out, and The Best Little
Whorehouse In Texas.
Bruce’s career has taken him to several
respected theatres across the nation
including the 5th Avenue Theatre, Cape
Fear Regional Theatre, Casa Manana,
Dicapo
Opera
Company,
Heritage
Entertainment, the Lyric Theatre, Maine
State Musical Theatre, North Shore Music
Theatre, the Pittsburgh CLO, and Walnut
Street Theatre. He counts Summer ’69
and Honky Tonk Angel among his offBroadway work, and he served as the
artistic director to Broadway’s Mindfreak
featuring
illusionist
Criss
Angel.
Additionally, Bruce co-directed Grand
Hotel on London’s West End and served
on the creative team for the national tours
of Dr. Doolittle and Nine. He received the
Barrymore Award for Best Director and
Best Musical for his revisionist look at
Cabaret. Other personal milestones for
Bruce include his work in the world
premieres of Dodsworth and Grossingers
and the US premiere of La Vie En Bleu.
Bruce is thrilled to have returned to
Houston, the city where he grew up, and
to work at TUTS, the theatre where his
career began.

DENISE WOOD (Executive Producer) was Lead
Producer with the RSC for ten years. Working
alongside Artistic Director Michael Boyd, she was
responsible for the planning of the artistic program worldwide and for overseeing the producing
of the company’s repertoire. Her numerous credits
as a producer for the RSC from 1995-2012 include
Michael Boyd’s Olivier Award-winning eightplay Histories cycle in 2006-2008 and Gregory
Doran’s acclaimed 2009 production of Hamlet
with David Tennant. She has worked on Matilda
The Musical since its inception, premiering the
production in Stratford and London before leaving the RSC to pursue a freelance career.
ANDRÉ PTASZYNSKI (Executive Producer).
As a producer, André has won Best Musical Olivier or Standard Awards for six different shows.
He has produced over 50 shows in all, in London,
New York and on tour. His company, Pola Jones,
also produced a number of comedy series for the
BBC. He was, for many years the promoter for a
wide range of comic talent from Dave Allen and
Rowan Atkinson to Eddie Izzard and The League
of Gentlemen. André was Chief Executive of the
Really Useful Group from 2005 to 2011 and for
the last 15 years he has also programmed and
run Andrew Lloyd Webber¹s West End theatres
including the London Palladium and The Theatre Royal Drury Lane. He was on the board of
