The tax is called Net Investment Income Tax, or NIIT, and is imposed on individuals, estates and trusts. This surtax of 3.8 percent is in addition to, and calculated separately from, your regular income tax. The NIIT will be applied to net investment income if your modified adjusted gross income amount for the year exceeds the following thresholds: $250,000 for joint filers and qualifying widow(er) with dependent child, $125,000 for married taxpayers filing separately, and $200,000 for individuals, heads of household and other filers. If you are an individual who is exempt from Medicare taxes, you may still be sub- Candace Johnson ject to the NIIT if you have net investment income and also have modified adjusted gross income over the thresholds. Investment income that is subject to the NIIT includes interest, dividends, capital gains, rental income, royalty income, nonqualified annuity income and passive income passed through to you on Schedule K-1s. Your total investment income may be reduced by investment interest expense, some investment or advisory fees, rental and royalty expenses, some tax preparation fees, brokerage fees and other directly related fees. Wages, unemployment compensation, income from a business that you actively participate in, Social Security income, alimony, tax-exempt interest, and any other income derived from an active business are not included in net investment income. It’s important to discuss your return(s) with your tax professional to be sure you understand how your tax liability is being calculated. This is not a one-time tax. Taking place in the 1950s, Mark Williams stars as Father Brown, the Catholic priest who also happens to have a particular talent for solving crimes, in this adaptation of GK Chesterton’s novels. Father Brown’s world is quintessentially English: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish churches. Many years spent hearing his parishioners' confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Each episode sees the enigmatic priest investigate a crime in his own particular way. Full of humor and compassion, but with a big dramatic twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting while bringing a contemporary edge to the storytelling. ‘‘ ...an uncanny insight into the origins of evil...” (L-R) Hugo Speer, Nancy Carroll, Mark Williams, Sorcha Cusack, Alex Price and Kasia Koleczek 18 VEGAS PBS S O U RC E The Story of the the Cairo Geniza – recording the world of the medieval Jews of the Mediterranean and Near East; the records of disputations between Christians and Jews in Spain; correspondence between the leader of the Arab revolt during World War I, Emir Feisal, and the leader of the Zionist movement, Chaim Weizmann. Schama talks about the turning points of the drama with living witnesses like Aviva Rahamim, who, as a 14-year-old, walked across the Sudanese desert to try and reach Israel; Yakub Odeh, the Palestinian whose village was destroyed in the war of 1948; and Levana Shamir, whose family members were imprisoned in Egypt at the same time. He debates the meaning of new archaeological discoveries of the Biblical period with Yosef Garfinkel of the Hebrew University; the Dead Sea Scrolls with their chief curator Pnina Shor; the character of the Talmud with Leon Wieseltier, literary editor of the New Republic; the photographic record of Israel’s history with Micha Bar Am; German cultural treasures from Enlightenment Germany and the music of Felix Mendelssohn with the critic Norman Lebrecht. It includes new archaeological research that is transforming our understanding of the earliest world of the Jews, and highlights evidence from the visual arts – synagogue mosaics, spectacularly illustrated Bibles, the brilliantly colorful decoration of synagogues (contrary to impressions of a monochrome religion), as well as the glorious music that carried Jewish traditions through the centuries. Jews with Simon Schama Tuesday, March 25 from 8 - 10 p.m. and April 1 from 8 -11 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 P rize-winning author of 15 books and Emmy Award-winner Simon Schama brings to life Jewish history and experience in a new five-part documentary series. Schama travels from Russia and the Ukraine to Egypt, Israel and Spain, exploring the imprint that Jewish culture has made on the world and the drama of suffering, resilience and rebirth that has gone with it. “If you were to remove from our collective history,” said Schama, “the contribution Jews have made to human culture, our world would be almost unrecognizable. There would be no monotheism, no written Bible, and our sense of modernity would be completely different. So the history of the Jews is everyone’s history too and what I hope people will take away from the series Simon Schama at Iraq-el Amir, Jordan is that sense of connection: a weave of cultural strands over the millennia, some brilliant, some dark, but resolving into a fabric of thrilling, often exalted creativity.” Primary sources include the Elephantine papyri, a collection of 5th century BC manuscripts illuminating the life of a town of Jewish soldiers and their families in ancient Egypt; the astonishing trove of documents – March 25 at 8 p.m. The Beginning Trace the Jewish experience from tribal beginnings to Romans’ destruction of the Jerusalem temple. March 25 at 9 p.m. Among Believers Witness the struggles of medieval Jews to preserve their identity under Christian and Islamic rule. Jews in Nevada Monday, March 24 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Exploring the Jewish experience on a local level, we are pleased to present a documentary that details the supportive role of Jewish merchants and entrepreneurs during the Virginia City gold and silver bonanza, and examines how Jewish owners of casinos and hotels helped to shape Las Vegas as a tourist destination. Adapted from the acclaimed book by John Marschall, the program includes profiles of Adolph Sutro, Jacob Davis (whose pants with riveted pockets became the famous Levi’s jeans), publisher Hank Greenspun, the Farahi family and many more. M A RC H 2014 19 How To Victory Garden’s Edible Feast Saturdays at 6:30 a.m. beginning March 29 on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1 T his fresh new series takes viewers on a journey across America, traveling from garden to sea, mountains to fields, to learn about local foods and the people who grow and produce them. Hosted by passionate foodie and TV personality Amy Devers, each episode features the work of 2013 James Beard Award-winning filmmaker and chef Daniel Klein, who introduces viewers to gardeners, farmers and food producers around the country. Employing a magazine-style format, each of the 13 episodes begins with three 4-6 minute segments from Klein’s travels, enjoying what Michael Pollan has described as “real food TV, in every sense.” Then it’s back home to the Victory Garden, concluding with a gardening piece with Roger Swain, followed by 20 VEGAS PBS S O U RC E Daniel Klein recipes and garden-to-table cooking with Chef Marian Morash. In the premier episode this week, host Amy Devers and Chef Klein are off to Arkansas to learn about shiitake mushrooms grown in a purely sustainable way. Then it’s on to the northwest to dig for geoduck and harvest sea salt and sea beans. Back home, Roger shows different varieties of cherry tomatoes and Marian makes a delicious garden fresh salad. M A RC H 2014 21 Science & Nature Exploration Wednesdays Wednesdays, March 19 and 26 on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1 King cobra March 19, 9 p.m. NOVA: Venom: Nature’s Killer Dr. Suzanne Simard, University of British Columbia, looks up at a Douglas fir tree March 19, 7:30 p.m. 2014 Science Bowl Quiz It’s Nevada’s premiere academic competition, featuring a fast-paced format where students “buzz-in” and answer tough questions covering biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy and more. The competition is held annually at the Vegas PBS Education Technology Campus and Studios. The top 12 teams receive cash prizes for their school’s math/science department, with the winning team moving on to compete in Washington D.C. Cheer on these young scholars! Repeats Saturday, March 22 at 4 p.m. March 19, 8 p.m. Lonesome George Eighty-year-old Lonesome George (who died in 2012) is in The Guinness Book of Records as the loneliest animal on the planet. George, as he was affectionately known, is a national hero and an emblem of the ongoing struggle to preserve the unique nature of the Galápagos Islands. This special film tells George’s story against the backdrop of the bigger conservation issues faced by these beautiful islands. George’s loneliness was all part of a far bigger picture. The Pinta tortoise has been heavily hunted, and the islands have long been invaded by non-native species that 22 VEGAS PBS S O U RC E push out the local wildlife. Even tourists, who come here partly to see the famous George, have added to the problems. There is an enormous struggle going on to restore the islands' unique biodiversity, but not everyone loves George: local fishermen who want to protect their rights to fish in Galápagos' protected waters have seized on him as a focus for their frustrations; meanwhile conservation efforts need to be balanced with an economy based on letting tourists in. Lonesome George Venom scientists are in a race against time. Inside the bodies of many creatures, evolution has produced extremely toxic cocktails, all designed for one reason: to kill. It took millions of years to perfect these ultimate brews of proteins and peptides, and we have only just begun to discover their potential. Now, the race is on to collect and study them before the animals that produce them disappear. But how does venom do its deadly work? This program reveals how venom causes the body to shut down, arteries to bleed uncontrollably and limbs to go black and die. However, nature’s most destructive and extreme poisons could contain the building blocks for a new generation of advanced drugs that could treat heart attack, stroke, diabetes, obesity and cancer. Follow two scientists on their expeditions to track down and capture the planet’s most deadly creatures, risking life and limb just to tease out milligrams of venom and get it back to the lab. Find out how nature’s deadliest cocktails could be medicine’s brightest new hope. Repeats Sunday, March 23 at 10 a.m. March 19, 10 p.m. Outbreak: Anatomy of a Plague Patient Zero is a flight attendant, stricken with what she thinks is chicken pox. She lands in Montreal and goes to a hotel room to recover. A few weeks later she is back on the job – unaware of her role in an impending public health catastrophe. This intense special juxtaposes this fictional, modernday scenario with the 1885 Montreal smallpox epidemic during which 20,000 people were infected and 3,000 died. Based on Michael Bliss' gripping book, it reveals the alarming reality that, more than a century later, our modern world may not be ready for the next deadly outbreak. ‘‘ Incredibly, a prime suspect murdered while in police custody before he could be tried, all of it captured on film.” Jack Ruby’s revolver March 26, 8 p.m. Nature: What Plants Talk About March 26, 9 p.m. NOVA: Cold Case JFK Hard core science is effortlessly integrated with a light-hearted look at how plants behave, revealing a world where plants are as busy, responsive and complex as we are. From the stunning heights of the Great Basin Desert to the lush coastal rainforests of west coast Canada, scientist J.C. Cahill takes us on a journey into the “secret world of plants,” revealing an astonishing landscape where plants eavesdrop on each other, talk to their allies, call in insect mercenaries and nurture their young. It is a world of pulsing activity where plants communicate, co-operate and, sometimes, wage all-out war. Discover that plants are a lot less passive and a lot more intelligent than you think! Repeats Sunday, March 30 at 9 a.m. Fifty years later, what can science tell us about the Kennedy assassination – and the investigations that followed? The 1963 murder, in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses, was a homicide investigator’s best-case scenario. Yet somehow the JFK assassination became a forensic nightmare, plagued by mishandled evidence, a controversial autopsy and, incredibly, a prime suspect murdered while in police custody – all of it captured on film. Now, this special follows a group of experts trying to unravel the lingering mysteries of the assassination: private investigator Josiah Thompson; gunshot wound authority Larry Sturdivan; medical examiner and forensic neuropathologist Peter Cummings; and firearms experts Dr. David Livingstone Lucien and Mike Haag. Repeats Sunday, March 30 at 10 a.m. March 26, 10 p.m. Secrets of the Dead: The Lost Diary of Dr. Livingstone To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Dr. David Livingstone’s birth, new forensic techniques are being used to study the famed explorer’s lost diary, which reveals he was witness to the brutal massacre of slaves at the hands of their traders. The writings in this diary suggest Livingstone was far different from the legend that surrounds him. Repeats Sunday, March 30 at 11 a.m. Celebrating North America’s Steam Railways Tuesday, March 18 from 8 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1 T he steam-engine train earned its reputation as one of the most valuable tools in building North America. Steam train This visually stunning two-hour special explores the impact that the steam engine had on North America and the movement to preserve the trains. It travels to 17 of the continent’s most historic and scenic tourist steam railroads, profiling the powerful machines that helped build two countries. Take a journey around the continent to glimpse the steam railroads – to the frozen tundra of Alaska, the vast high desert of Arizona, the rolling hills of New Hampshire, the Black Hills of South Dakota, and the prairies and mountain ranges of Canada. With the help of his faithful subordinate, brilliant young Parisian police commissioner Nicolas le Floch (Jerome Robart) solves mysterious disappearances and sorts out awkward scandals. From seedy taverns to the muffled hallways of Versailles, from brothels to the Châtelet prisons, he tracks and stakes out suspects, questions witnesses, gathers evidence, foils traps and unveils plotters. The series plunges viewers into the mysteries of 18th century Paris, a world teeming with crime, debauchery and theft. In this week's episode, the young Count Louis Charles Allas is found beheaded. Tom Parker, came up with one of the biggest stunts of their career – staging a live concert in Hawaii that would be beamed by satellite for TV broadcast in 40 countries to a global audience of 1.5 billion people. It was a global smash. Entertainment events presented live via satellite are common today but in 1973, this was a first. Elvis responded with a typically dynamic show, and this home video release features the king of rock and roll singing some of his biggest hits and personal favorites, including “C.C. ThisWeek’s Picks Alejandra Guzman Peter, Paul and Mary 25th Anniversary Concert Friday, March 14 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 I n 1986, the legendary trio Peter, Paul and Mary marked their 25th anniversary with the taping of their very first PBS special. Now, more than 50 years after the formation of the group in Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is rebroadcast. The special features songs that became, for many, the soundtrack of their generation. In an era in which folk music became America’s messenger of hope, Peter, Paul & Mary sounded a call to conscience that, to this day, remains an enduring part of our national quest for equity and justice. Songs include such timeless classics as “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “If I Had a Hammer,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Repeats on Sunday, March 17 at 5 p.m. Estudio Billboard: Alejandra Guzman Sunday March 9 at 11 p.m. on Vegas PBS Vme Hosted by Latin music insider Leila Cobo, top Latin artists reveal aspects of their lives, careers, musical influences and aspirations. This week, Alejandra Guzman, the daughter of renowned Mexican singer Enrique Guzman, talks about the story of her life as an artist, since she first sang in public the song “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra. Her first album was a success, with songs like “No Seas Cruel,” “Eternamente Bella” and “Mala Hierba.” Alejandra draws on personal experiences to write songs, as is the case for “Volverte a Amar,” “Llama Por Favor” and “Hasta el Final,” which talk about the fear and pain she felt as she struggled through breast cancer. His legendary works include Rose-Marie (1924), Show Boat (1927), Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951) and The Sound of Music (1959). Brimming over with movie clips from his greatest musicals, this special features interviews with Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince, Shirley Jones, Mitzi Gaynor, Hammerstein family members and others, and is hosted by Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Matthew Morrison (“Glee”), who starred in the 2008 Tony-winning revival of South Pacific as Lieutenant Cable. Then there is the bolas spider that uses a ball of sticky silk soaked in a copy of moth pheromone to lure them in. Finally we meet communal spiders: millions of individuals living and feeding together in a vast, towering web – an arachnophobe’s nightmare perhaps but truly fascinating behavior, nevertheless! The series concludes next Thursday with Intimate Relations. P uccini's enduring favorite stars an exceptional trio of singing actors in the leading roles. Acclaimed American soprano Patricia Racette stars in one of opera’s greatest roles as the ultimate diva, Floria Tosca, in Luc Bondy’s production. French tenor Roberto Alagna sings Tosca’s lover, the painter Cavaradossi, and Georgian baritone George Gagnidze is the corrupt, lustful Scarpia. Italian maestro Riccardo Frizza conducts Puccini’s sweeping, dramatic tale of murder, lust and political intrigue. The New York Times observed, “The starkness of the sets suits and amplifies the work’s desperate moods and places the music in sharp relief.” Renée Fleming hosts the broadcast. Repeats on Sunday, March 30 at 1 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10. Roberto Alagna and Patricia Racette Apollo 17: The Untold Story of the Last Men on the Moon Thursday, March 20 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Eugene Cernan on the lunar surface On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the resources of our nation and launched Project Apollo – the greatest technological undertaking in the history of mankind. However, only two years after Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, public and political interest in Apollo had dwindled. The final moon landing occurred in December 1972. This fascinating special recounts that historic voyage. The documentary features spectacular NASA footage and exclusive interviews with space scientists, some of whom worked on the Apollo program during the 1960s and 1970s. It is the remarkable story of the determination and courage of a generation, a tribute to three brave astronauts and the thousands of men and women behind them during the final days of NASA’s Apollo program. ThisWeek’s Picks Seeing Stars Thursday, March 27 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 S pace exploration has reached its golden age. Over the last few decades our view of the cosmos has fundamentally changed due to advances in the design of telescopes. Today, the development of new telescopes means we are on the cusp of a new era of discovery. The latest telescopes now allow astronomers to observe objects and events formerly hidden from view in the “invisible universe” – the vast realm that exists beyond the visible part of the spectrum of light. It is here that breathtaking new discoveries are being made, often by chance – giant black holes, supernovas, entire new galaxies – discoveries that completely alter our understanding of the universe. From bizarre structures for detecting elusive cosmic rays to epic shrines to science high on desert mountains, the latest telescopes will change our view of space forever. Mona Lisa Da Vinci: The Lost Treasure Tuesday, March 25 at 10:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Rewind Contributor Gunther Witzel of University of Cologne Leonardo da Vinci is considered by many to be one of the greatest artists who ever lived. Yet his reputation rests on only a handful of pictures – including the world's most famous painting, the Mona Lisa. Fiona Bruce attempts to uncover the story of this enigmatic genius. She begins her journey in Da Vinci’s birthplace, the small town of Vinci in Tuscany, and follows in his footsteps to Florence, where he was apprenticed to the master painter Verrocchio. In Paris, Fiona learns the secret of how Da Vinci achieved the extraordinary effect of the Mona Lisa. And in New York, she is given an exclusive preview of a sensational discovery: a new Da Vinci, thought to have disappeared centuries ago, Salvator Mundi, The Savior of the World. Originally airs on Sunday, March 23 at 10:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10. Pride and Prejudice: Having a Ball Sunday, March 23 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” one of the most popular books of all time, turned 200 years old in 2013. This special re-stages an authentic Regency ball to mark the 200th anniversary of one of the world's most-loved novels, using it as a prism through which to view life in 19th century Britain. Historian Amanda Vickery (At Home with the Georgians and The Many Lovers of Jane Austen) and writer Alastair Sooke lead viewers through the action as a team of experts reconstruct the ball in loving detail. Paying careful attention to every aspect of Regency life, the team creates incredible food, stunning clothes, candlelit rooms and pulse-quickening dances on location at the house where Jane Austen’s own brother used to live.
