he importance of children being able to read at or above their grade
level is certainly no secret. In recent years, the value of early childhood
literacy, especially children being able to read at grade level by the third
grade, has been established.
Given the challenges facing our children, literacy at all levels is vital for processing infor-
mation, fostering creativity and making informed decisions. Statistically, the odds of children graduating high school and succeeding later in life have a direct correlation to their
reading at the proper level by the third grade.
Vegas PBS and PBS nationally have a long history of promoting literacy. Perhaps you are

As well as hunting a variety of edible

United Nation’s team promoting bug consumption and witnesses the production of
crickets, the country’s fast food favorite.
But nothing quite prepares him for harvesting bugs on a mass scale, from stalking
grasshoppers at night to catching fiercely
biting ants. And it’s not just insects on the
menu. Gates also goes hunting for the
hairiest, scariest spider on the planet – the
tarantula. As the world faces food shortages, Gates asks if the solution is for everyone – each of us included – to start eating
insects too.

Young Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser achieved sensational success by breaking
the boundaries between different genres of music and taking the cello to a new level. Their unique
cello version of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” took the world by storm. Within only a week,
this YouTube video became a huge viral sensation, leading to a record deal with Sony Masterworks
and an invitation to join Elton John on his worldwide tour. Since then, the duo has appeared on
major television shows such as “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,”
“Lopez Tonight” and many others. This concert showcases these classical superstars accompanied
by the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra at an ecstatic “homecoming” show filmed at Croatia’s
Zagreb Arena in front of 15,000 enthusiastic fans.

Income Tax
By Candace Johnson, CPA, Gerety & Associates
V
egas PBS members should be
aware of a new tax that may be
assessed on your 2013 income
tax return. The tax is called
Net Investment Income Tax, or NIIT, and is
imposed on individuals, estates and trusts.
This surtax of 3.8 percent is in addition to,
and calculated separately from, your regular
income tax. The NIIT will be applied to net
investment income if your modified adjusted gross income amount for the year
exceeds the following thresholds: $250,000
for joint filers and qualifying widow(er)
with dependent child, $125,000 for married
taxpayers filing separately, and $200,000 for
individuals, heads of household and other
filers.
If you are an individual who is exempt
from Medicare taxes, you may still be sub-

ject to the NIIT if you have net investment
income and also have modified adjusted
gross income over the thresholds.
Investment income that is subject to the
NIIT includes interest, dividends, capital
gains, rental income, royalty income, nonqualified annuity income and passive
income passed through to you on Schedule
K-1s. Your total investment income may be
reduced by investment interest expense,
some investment or advisory fees, rental
and royalty expenses, some tax preparation
fees, brokerage fees and other directly
related fees.
Wages, unemployment compensation,
income from a business that you actively
participate in, Social Security income,
alimony, tax-exempt interest, and any other
income derived from an active business are
not included in net investment income.
It’s important to discuss your return(s)
with your tax professional to be sure you
understand how your tax liability is being
calculated. This is not a one-time tax. With
careful planning, you may be able to reduce
or even eliminate paying NIIT in some
future years.

ritish drama and mystery have become some of the most anticipated programs in the
Vegas PBS lineup, and this month, we present another tantalizing mystery set in the heart
of the beautiful English countryside. Taking place in the 1950s, Mark Williams stars as
Father Brown, the Catholic priest who also happens to have a particular talent for solving
crimes, in this adaptation of GK Chesterton’s novels.
Father Brown’s world is quintessentially English: drawing rooms in large country houses, miles of
countryside, village halls and secret gardens, as well as country fairs, railway stations and rural parish
churches. Many years spent hearing his parishioners' confessions have given him an uncanny insight
into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. Each episode sees the enigmatic priest
investigate a crime in his own particular way. Full of humor and compassion, but with a big dramatic
twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting
while bringing a contemporary edge to the storytelling.

is a national hero and an emblem of the
ongoing struggle to preserve the unique
nature of the Galápagos Islands. This special film tells George’s story against the
backdrop of the bigger conservation issues
faced by these beautiful islands.
George’s loneliness was all part of a far
bigger picture. The Pinta tortoise has been
heavily hunted, and the islands have long
been invaded by non-native species that

want to protect their rights to fish in
Galápagos' protected waters have seized on
him as a focus for their frustrations; meanwhile conservation efforts need to be balanced with an economy based on letting

Venom scientists are in a race against
time. Inside the bodies of many creatures,
evolution has produced extremely toxic
cocktails, all designed for one reason: to
kill. It took millions of years to perfect these
ultimate brews of proteins and peptides,
and we have only just begun to discover
their potential. Now, the race is on to collect and study them before the animals that
produce them disappear. But how does
venom do its deadly work? This program
reveals how venom causes the body to shut
down, arteries to bleed uncontrollably and
limbs to go black and die.
However, nature’s most destructive and
extreme poisons could contain the building
blocks for a new generation of advanced
drugs that could treat heart attack, stroke,
diabetes, obesity and cancer. Follow two scientists on their expeditions to track down
and capture the planet’s most deadly creatures, risking life and limb just to tease out
milligrams of venom and get it back to the
lab. Find out how nature’s deadliest cocktails could be medicine’s brightest new
hope. Repeats Sunday, March 23 at 10 a.m.

Michael Bliss' gripping book, it reveals the
alarming reality that, more than a century
later, our modern world may not be ready

of west coast Canada, scientist J.C. Cahill
takes us on a journey into the “secret world
of plants,” revealing an astonishing landscape where plants eavesdrop on each
other, talk to their allies, call in insect mercenaries and nurture their young. It is a
world of pulsing activity where plants communicate, co-operate and, sometimes, wage
all-out war. Discover that plants are a lot
less passive and a lot more intelligent than
you think! Repeats Sunday, March 30 at 9 a.m.

about the Kennedy assassination – and the
investigations that followed? The 1963 murder, in broad daylight in front of hundreds of

best-case scenario. Yet somehow the JFK
assassination became a forensic nightmare,
plagued by mishandled evidence, a controversial autopsy and, incredibly, a prime suspect murdered while in police custody – all
of it captured on film. Now, this special follows a group of experts trying to unravel the

All good things must come to an end, and this week brings the
season conclusion of the most popular drama in PBS history. In
this final episode, Lady Rose meets the Prince of Wales and

his nostalgic special focuses on the greatest singers and songwriters of the classic
1950s and 1960s folk era. Presented by the lead singer of The Lovin’ Spoonful (“Do

Paris, 1761. Louis XV's kingdom is plagued
by conspiracies and murders. With the
help of his faithful subordinate, brilliant
young Parisian police commissioner
Nicolas le Floch (Jerome Robart) solves
mysterious disappearances and sorts out
awkward scandals. From seedy taverns to
the muffled hallways of Versailles, from
brothels to the Châtelet prisons, he tracks
and stakes out suspects, questions witnesses, gathers evidence, foils traps and
unveils plotters. The series plunges viewers into the mysteries of 18th century
Paris, a world teeming with crime,
debauchery and theft. In this week's
episode, the young Count Louis Charles
Allas is found beheaded. Le Floch, sent to
the lands of Aquitaine to investigate, falls
into a terrible trap: a hunting with hounds,
with the Earl of Rhodes as the Grand
Huntsman and Nicolas Le Floch his prey.

First Folio
Elvis Presley was a man who knew how to rise to a challenge and in 1973, his manager, Col.
Tom Parker, came up with one of the biggest stunts of their career – staging a live concert in
Hawaii that would be beamed by satellite for TV broadcast in 40 countries to a global audience
of 1.5 billion people. It was a global smash. Entertainment events presented live via satellite
are common today but in 1973, this was a first. Elvis responded with a typically dynamic show,
and this home video release features the king of rock and roll singing some of his biggest
hits and personal favorites, including “C.C. Rider,” “Burning Love,” “Suspicious Minds,”
“Steamroller Blues” and “American Trilogy.” Repeats on Saturday, March 8 at 9 p.m.

Peter, Paul and Mary 25th Anniversary Concert
Friday, March 14 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
I
n 1986, the legendary trio Peter, Paul and Mary marked their 25th anniversary with the
taping of their very first PBS special. Now, more than 50 years after the formation of the
group in Greenwich Village, this joyous yet deeply moving live concert is rebroadcast. The
special features songs that became, for many, the soundtrack of their generation. In an era
in which folk music became America’s messenger of hope, Peter, Paul & Mary sounded a call to
conscience that, to this day, remains an enduring part of our national quest for equity and justice. Songs include such timeless classics as “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “If I Had a Hammer,”
“Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane.” Repeats

Hosted by Latin music insider Leila Cobo,
top Latin artists reveal aspects of their
lives, careers, musical influences and aspirations. The artists also have their instruments handy, playing their music while
speaking with Leila. This week, Alejandra
Guzman, the daughter of renowned
Mexican singer Enrique Guzman, talks
about the story of her life as an artist,
since she first sang in public the song
“New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra.
Her first album was a success, with songs
like “No Seas Cruel,” “Eternamente Bella”
and “Mala Hierba.” Alejandra draws on
personal experiences to write songs, as is
the case for “Volverte a Amar,” “Llama Por
Favor” and “Hasta el Final,” which talk
about the fear and pain she felt as she
struggled through breast cancer.

Thursday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
This celebration honors one of the most acclaimed lyricists and librettists of the 20th century, the man who worked in the theater for more than 40 years, writing the lyrics for more than
a thousand songs and the libretti for dozens of operettas and musicals performed on
Broadway, in London and in Hollywood films. His legendary works include Rose-Marie (1924),
Show Boat (1927), Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and
I (1951) and The Sound of Music (1959). Brimming over with movie clips from his greatest
musicals, this special features interviews with Stephen Sondheim, Harold Prince, Shirley
Jones, Mitzi Gaynor, Hammerstein family members and others, and is hosted by Tony, Emmy
and Golden Globe-nominated Matthew Morrison (“Glee”), who starred in the 2008 Tony-winning revival of South Pacific as Lieutenant Cable. Repeats on Saturday, March 15 at 2 p.m.

This four-part series examines the bizarre,
ferocious and surprisingly beautiful world
of the invertebrates. This week’s third
installment explores the wonders of silk.
Silk is the invertebrates’ great invention.
From the protective stalks of lacewing
eggs to the amazing hanging threads of
New Zealand’s ‘glow worms’, they use it in
a huge range of ways. The spiders, though,
have taken silk-spinning to extremes. The
common wolf spider has no web, but the
female is a gentle parent, encasing her
eggs in silk and carrying the precious bundle wherever she goes. Then there is the
bolas spider that uses a ball of sticky silk
soaked in a copy of moth pheromone to
lure them in. Finally we meet communal
spiders: millions of individuals living and
feeding together in a vast, towering web –
an arachnophobe’s nightmare perhaps but
truly fascinating behavior, nevertheless!
The series concludes next Thursday with
Intimate Relations.

Eugene Cernan on the lunar surface
On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the resources of our nation and
launched Project Apollo – the greatest technological undertaking in the history of mankind.
However, only two years after Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, public and political
interest in Apollo had dwindled. The final moon landing occurred in December 1972. This fascinating special recounts that historic voyage. The documentary features spectacular NASA
footage and exclusive interviews with space scientists, some of whom worked on the Apollo
program during the 1960s and 1970s. It is the remarkable story of the determination and
courage of a generation, a tribute to three brave astronauts and the thousands of men and
women behind them during the final days of NASA’s Apollo program.

objects and events formerly hidden from view in the “invisible universe” – the vast realm that
exists beyond the visible part of the spectrum of light. It is here that breathtaking new discoveries are being made, often by chance – giant black holes, supernovas, entire new galaxies – discoveries that completely alter our understanding of the universe. From bizarre structures for detecting elusive cosmic rays to epic shrines to science high on desert mountains, the latest telescopes
will change our view of space forever.
Mona Lisa
Da Vinci:
The Lost Treasure
Tuesday, March 25 at 10:30
p.m. on Vegas PBS Rewind
Contributor Gunther Witzel of University of Cologne
Leonardo da Vinci is considered by many
to be one of the greatest artists who ever
lived. Yet his reputation rests on only a
handful of pictures – including the world's
most famous painting, the Mona Lisa.
Fiona Bruce attempts to uncover the story
of this enigmatic genius. She begins her
journey in Da Vinci’s birthplace, the small
town of Vinci in Tuscany, and follows in his
footsteps to Florence, where he was
apprenticed to the master painter
Verrocchio. In Paris, Fiona learns the
secret of how Da Vinci achieved the
extraordinary effect of the Mona Lisa. And
in New York, she is given an exclusive preview of a sensational discovery: a new Da
Vinci, thought to have disappeared centuries ago, Salvator Mundi, The Savior of
the World. Originally airs on Sunday, March
23 at 10:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10.
Pride and Prejudice: Having a Ball
Sunday, March 23 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10
Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” one of the most popular books of all time,
turned 200 years old in 2013. This special re-stages an authentic Regency ball to
mark the 200th anniversary of one of the world's most-loved novels, using it as a
prism through which to view life in 19th century Britain. Historian Amanda Vickery
(At Home with the Georgians and The Many Lovers of Jane Austen) and writer
Alastair Sooke lead viewers through the action as a team of experts reconstruct the
ball in loving detail. Paying careful attention to every aspect of Regency life, the
team creates incredible food, stunning clothes, candlelit rooms and pulse-quickening dances on location at the house where Jane Austen’s own brother used to live.
