Comfortable As A Fish
" Striper season is long, and often wet and windy; a perpetual onslaught of white-topped waves and
rising tides. I look to keep warm and dry through most of it. But when the summer sun turns tall and
the days go long, I don’t mind getting splashed so long as I know I’ll dry off quickly and not get sunseared in the process. Patagonia’s Sun Shade Shirt fills that order; bone-dry in a flash with 30 UPF sun
protection. That’s consoling, as I fish best when I’m as comfortable in the striper’s domain as they are."
Dave Skok,
fishes, ties flies, guides, photographs fishing and writes about it all. “Not a bad life, but I’ve still got to work on that
work less, fish more program.”

to the 62nd Annual Martha’s
Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.
Your participation in this tournament is the
foundation of our success. More than 3,000 folks
a year fish our tournament adding hundreds of memories,
friendships and fish stories to their lives.
The profits derived from the Derby are given back to this
Island community through scholarships to its young people
and contributions to conservation activities to protect this
marvelous island.
Twenty years ago, the late Arnold Spofford and I met
with renowned artist Ray Ellis at his Edgartown studio to
discuss an idea we had. We hoped Ray would consider
painting a favorite island fishing spot for us. We would
reproduce 100 and try to sell all of them to benefit a newly
created scholarship program for our local youth. To be honest, both Arnold and I were petrified. We were obligating
a lot of money, of which we had little. But, it was Ray who
assured us that this would work.
Today, we have enjoyed 20 very successful years of
“Derby Prints” painted and reproduced by Ray Ellis. On this
year’s cover is a beautiful painting “Below the Cliff” of
Aquinnah that few individuals get to see. Ray has given
us much to be thankful for. Our scholarship program is
extremely successful and this year with the partnerships with
the Anne E. Clark Foundation and Vineyard Vines, we
awarded a total of $30,000 to four worthy Martha’s Vineyard
Regional High School students.
From day one, it has been Ray that has helped us generate
more than $250,000 to help Vineyard students reach their
dreams.
Ray Ellis, the entire Derby Committee and I, along with
42 recipients and their families during these past 20 years,
salute you and thank you. Our tournament would not be
what it is today without your generous contributions.
Thank you,
Ed Jerome

elcome to the 62nd Annual Martha’s Vineyard
Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. Last year,
registration surpassed 3000 for the fifth time in
the past six years. Because of this success, we have
been able to give back generously. The Derby remains committed to preserving and protecting the quality of life we
enjoy on the Vineyard. Whether one lives here year-round, is
a seasonal resident, or a visitor, it is clear that this island is a
special place. Because of increasing costs necessary to run the
Derby, registration fees have risen this year. In order to preserve the Awards Structure and continue to offer participants
an exciting and superior tournament, as well as remain true
to our mission to give back, this fee increase was necessary.
Thank you for understanding and supporting our efforts.
I joined the Derby Committee in 1999. That September,
while helping to set up the Weigh Station, then-Vice Chairman
Walter Morrison and I went to get a few sheets of plywood for
the fillet barge. As Walter drove faster, the plywood started
to float. He had me get in the back of his truck to keep the
plywood from flying away, which it still nearly did, along
with me. “Just lie down on it, kid,” Walter laughed. I don’t
think he heard my pleas to slow down over Shania Twain
blaring from his stereo. Such was my initiation into the Derby
Committee. I survived, and in the years since, I’ve been very
fortunate to be a part of this wonderful organization.
I believe that membership on the Derby Committee is a
privilege. There is something meaningful and collegial about
the Derby Committee’s work. Meetings are often spirited,
and opinions sometimes differ, but everyone is sincere in his
or her desire to preserve, protect, and improve the Derby and
its goal to give back. This doesn’t just happen on its own. This
event is over 60 years old, and is now realizing its greatest
success. The work necessary to put on this show has similarly
increased, but it is worthwhile and important. It is only
through the work of the Derby Committee volunteers and
Weigh Station staff that this incredible island event has
evolved into one of the premier saltwater fishing tournaments in the United States. If you appreciate what the Derby
does and enjoy participating in it, show it by thanking the
dedicated, hard-working, and generous group of people
whose actions prove that they care about the Vineyard.
The Derby’s prizes have expanded to over a quarter of a
million dollars in value. Thanks to the efforts of our generous
sponsors, many anglers win these awards, highlighted by
our Grand Prizes, compliments of Boston Whaler, Mercury
Chairman John Custer and his daughter Isabelle at the
2006 Kids Day Derby
Marine, and the Clay Family Dealerships. However, the
most important part of the Derby remains the renewing of
friendships, making new acquaintances, and enjoying the
unrivaled sport of fishing the storied Vineyard waters. An
additional way to enjoy the Derby is to participate in the new
Team Competition. To register on a team, please visit a Derby
registration outlet.
Please read your Rules Brochure carefully and pay particular attention to the minimum sizes and boundaries.
By abiding by the rules, you help the Derby Committee to
manage a successful tournament that is fair and enjoyable for
everybody. Please show appropriate respect for the environment, including discarding of used fishing line properly. Carry
a tape measure with you and measure your fish accurately.
When releasing fish, do so carefully. If you plan on donating
your catch to our fillet program, please keep it iced. Join us in
our commitment to wear life vests. Above all, practice safety
and good sportsmanship. Remember, “Time and tide wait for
no man.” Get out there and fish. Good luck to all.

ince its establishment as a nonprofit corporation, The
Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, Inc.,
has awarded an annual four-year scholarship to two
Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School seniors. The total
amount of scholarship money donated over the the years now
exceeds more than $250,000.
Qualified students are recommended by the high school and
are selected by a Derby subcommittee. Because of the continued
support of the Anne Clark Foundation, as well as the generosity
of Vineyard Vines, in 2007 the Derby was able to award two
$10,000 scholarships as well as two $5000 scholarships to the
deserving students featured on this page.”
A Word from a Past Scholarship Recipient
Dear Derby Committee:
I graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High
School in 1993 and received a $4000 college scholarship
from the Derby. This award helped me to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Oceanography at the Florida
Institute of Technology, and then continue on to graduate
school at the University of Rhode Island, where I earned
my Doctorate in 2005. I now work for the National Marine
Fisheries Service as a researcher studying the waters of
Narragansett Bay here in New England.
I am grateful for the assistance the Derby provided to
me. I believe that my case serves as a real world
example of the benefit this scholarship provides to
aspiring students as they start their academic careers.
Sincerely,
Dr. Christopher Melrose
Oceanographer, Narragansett Bay Mariner Shuttle Survey
David “DJ” Pothier
Caetlyn Hutchinson, from Aquinnah, is a member of the
National Honor Society and demonstrates a remarkably high
level of achievement across the disciplines, evidence of both
her wide-ranging intelligence and her diligence in all she
undertakes. In addition to her devotion to academics, Caetlyn
has been extremely active in our school and community,
involved in varsity sports and holding a number of jobs
throughout her four years at MVRHS. Caetlyn, interested in
horticulture, the environment, and engineering, plans to
study Plant or Marine Biology at the University of Vermont.
James Bishop from Edgartown is a hard working student
at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. He was an All
Star defensive lineman on the football team, Captain of the
track team and a summer traffic police officer in Edgartown.
James is a positive contributor to the school and local
community. He will be studying Environmental Protection
at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the fall.
Chris Edwards of Edgartown is a responsible, thoughtful,
modest student with academic talents and a commitment
to others and to the community. He has been a key member
of our sailing and hockey teams, and has put in long hours
working each summer. Chris, a Derby participant since age
five, has contributed his time and energy to numerous
service activities. He has a keen interest in ecology and the
environment, and plans to study marine biology at the
University of New Hampshire.
David (DJ) Pothier of Oak Bluffs has spent a good part of
his young life exploring the waters around the Vineyard. He is
knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of boating and
fishing, and hopes to study at Mitchell College for an eventual degree in nautical transportation. DJ has participated in
the Derby for many years, and has served as a volunteer for
the seniors program almost as long. He has been a four-year
varsity member of the high school’s sailing team and is
praised for his consistency and skills. DJ has remarkable technical abilities and great potential in his chosen area.

Where were all the fish ?
Derby 2006…
by Gregory Skomal
W
ith 20 years of Derby data analysis under
my belt, you would think that I may be able
to answer this year’s ever-present weigh
station question: Where are all the fish? As
much as I would like to spew forth a definitive answer using
scientific jargon befitting a recently minted PhD, I typically
dodge the question with another: What do you think? At this
point in the conversation, I’m off the hook, so to speak, as
theories ranging from warm water temperatures to the lack
of bait to the effect of the moon to the color of the Derby pin
swirl around the weigh station. But seriously, as most of you
who fish the Derby know, the science of fish abundance comprises a bit of theory, a smattering of mind-numbing math,
and a whole bunch of hindsight. I’ll save you the tedium and
stick with the latter in this analysis of last year’s results.
Although fishing during the 2006 Derby was a bit slower
than previous years, participation continued to flourish as
3,067 anglers registered for the month-long event. This was
largely on par with last year, exceeding 2005 by 17 participants.
For the fourth consecutive year, the Derby broke the 3,000
angler mark. Imagine if the fishing was better! The following
synopsis and accompanying figure show how Derby participants fared in 2006 relative to the previous 19 years. In short,
anglers had to work harder in 2006 to find the fish, but the
numbers were not too far off for bluefish and striped bass.
Bluefish: From 1990 to 1996, bluefish landings declined
from a 20-year high of 1,700 fish to a low of 665 fish. Since
then, bluefish have rebounded to numbers comparable to
those weighed in the late 1980’s. After a 12% decline in 2004
and 2005, landings of Derby bluefish were marginally better
in 2006 than in 2005. The number of bluefish weighed in 2006
actually increased 2% to 1,364 fish. Shore fisherman accounted
for only 24% of the bluefish catch. This is down from last year
(29%) but slightly higher than the proportion of shore fish
landed during 2000-2004 (18-23%). Although fly fishermen
weighed only 28 bluefish and 3% of the landings, this is only
slightly lower than their 20-year average of 5%. “Lots of small
fish” was the mantra of many Derby fishermen, but this did
not pan out in the statistics. The average weight of bluefish
landed in 2006 (7.6 lbs.) actually exceeded last year (7.2 lbs),
but remained well below the 20-year average of 9.0 lbs.
Atlantic Bonito: From 1987 to 2006, bonito landings have
fluctuated between 110-696 fish each year. Since 1995, bonito
landings have been depressed largely due to a conspicuous
absence of shore fish. Although bonito landings increased
20
|
62nd Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2007
7% in 2005 relative to 2004, 97% were landed by boat fishermen. In 2006, bonito were scarce all around and the landing
of only 142 fish represents a 60% decline relative to 2005 (347
fish) and the third lowest during the 20-year period. Again,
boat fishermen accounted for the bulk of the catch (93%) as
shore anglers weighed only 10 bonito. The only bright side
to bonito fishing in 2006 was that the few fish landed were,
on average, larger than previous years. The average weight
of bonito landed in 2006 (6.6 lbs) not only exceeded the
average for the previous nine years (6.0 lbs.), but also the
20-year average of 6.5 lbs. It is difficult to explain the current
12-year depression in Derby bonito catches. This trend and
the lack of shore-caught fish indicate that large numbers of
bonito have not moved into nearshore waters in recent years.
This may be driven by the lack of bait in these areas, but
without a stock assessment of this species, we cannot rule
out a potential decline in the population as well.
False Albacore: First, a quick recount of the history of the
false albacore in the Derby. Recall that daily prizes have not
been awarded for this species since 1995 and the minimum
length of 25 inches was established in 1998 to reduce landings.
This worked effectively until landings increased to 601 fish
in 2004. In 2005, the Derby Committee responded with a three
fish bag limit coupled with the minimum size, which reduced
false albacore landings 44% to 334 fish. Despite the bag limit
and minimum size, good albie fishing was enjoyed by both
boat and shore fishermen in 2005, who caught 60% and 40%
of the landings, respectively. This was not the case in 2006.
Like bonito, false albacore were not consistently available
during the 2006 Derby and this is reflected in the landing of
only 107 fish, which represents a 68% decline and the lowest
catch since 1993. Unlike bonito, however, the few pockets of
false albacore around were available to both shore and boat
fishermen who accounted for equal shares of the fish weighed.
Those false albacore weighed in 2006 were, on average, larger
than in previous years. The average weight of 9.3 lbs is larger
than the 20-year average of 8.6 lbs and exceeds all other years
since 1989. Years with very low albacore landings (1988, 1989,
1993, 2006) seem to comprise large fish and may be indicative
of few young fish in the fishery. Unfortunately, the lack of a
false albacore stock assessment makes it difficult to
examine fluctuations in regional abundance.
Striped Bass: From 1985 until 1992, the striped bass was
eliminated from the Derby prize structure for conservation
purposes. In 1993, the species was slowly re-introduced with
limited prizes until 1995 when it became a fully eligible
species with a minimum size of 38 inches. With the decrease
of the legal minimum size in 1997, the Derby Committee
dropped the minimum bass size to 32 inches. I remind you of
this history because when looking at the attached figure you
need to ignore the first four years (1993-1996) when comparing landings from year to year. After a 26% decline from 1997
(771 fish) to 2001 (570 fish), striped bass landings rebounded

30% in 2003 (813 fish) and 2004 (800 fish). In 2005, striped bass
landings declined 13% to 696 fish, but this may have been
due to poor weather conditions during the final week. The
number of striped bass weighed by Derby fishermen was
slightly lower in 2006 at 689 fish, but we didn’t have the poor
weather to blame. Although the split between boat and shore
fish was about average (63% and 37%, respectively), angler
complaints about small fish were well founded as the average
weight of striped bass declined from 21.5 lbs in 2005 to 19.6
lbs in 2006. This is further evidenced by a decline in the range
of striped bass weights in 2006. Last year, striped bass weights
ranged from 9-49 lbs, but striped bass only spanned 9-44 lbs
this year. Regional differences in the availability of striped
bass may be associated with environmental conditions, like
water temperature, changes in prey, or changes in the striped
bass population size and structure. The results of the most
recent striped bass stock assessment indicate that stock
abundance is very high. Hence, the relative decline in striped
bass weighed during the Derby in recent years is likely
related to other factors.

I
ponder this question as I crunch down the path towards
the beach. The smell of salt air and pine mixed together
help wake me up. The creaks and rattles of my
fishing gear thankfully distract me from sounds and movement in the fading night. It is four AM and the sound of the
Woods Hole foghorn prickles the hair on the back of my neck.
A beautiful, eerie sound.
The beach is shrouded in darkness but it is also brilliantly
alive in the chill of a Fall New England pre-dawn. A night
heron croaks and I hear baitfish splash as they flee predators
in the pond. I cross the little footbridge and sand replaces
wood underfoot. An offshore breeze picks up and cools the
sweat under my cap. I zip up my parka and shiver a little
with the chill and the lingering fear of the dark woods.
I choose the small jetty on the right and rig up the old
Clayton Hoyle rod with a whole frozen squid. It was in this
exact spot that I caught The First Bass, a huge 47-pound fish.
A once-in-a-lifetime fish. Hurling the heavy rig out into the
now pinkening ocean I unconsciously murmur prayers to an
unseen memory. A ghostfish from an earlier time. “Come on

beautiful fish. It’s getting light but maybe you are still here?”
I mouth the words as I adjust the drag and wipe my hands. I
hear smaller “schoolie” bass swirl and splash down the
lapping shoreline but I am looking for a large, solitary striper.
It is the last morning of the Derby and I have an afternoon
ticket on the bus back to Boston.
I watch the sun start to rise over the Island and sleepily
contemplate the magic of the world coming alive. I am alone
on the beach and the clicking of the drag on the big rod noisily interrupts my drifting thoughts of choices, mountains,
and trout streams. Fish on! A dull, predictable struggle in
response to my hook set immediately tells me the tide has
changed and stingrays have found my bait. I carefully release two of these strange creatures before cranking in for
the final time and sitting down to a grape jelly toast sandwich. It is now 8:00 AM, it is light, and the low sun is
steadily losing a battle with building, towering, dark clouds.
The wind is picking up and the first whitecaps dot the sea
in front of me. The Islander rounds West Chop in the distance, breaking the horizon like a blob of white paint on a

deep blue canvas. Time to start watching for albies.
“There!…and there again”, I say to the wind as my eye
picks up the irregular slashes of breaking tuna among steady
whitecaps 200 yards out, to the left. “Where will they break
next?” I stand ready with every hair prickling up and down
my neck and the smaller rod cocked and ready to cast. Nothing. At 11:00 I decide to pack it in. I will get an earlier bus. No,
wait. Why not walk down the beach toward West Chop and
take the long way home? What the heck.
What stopped my walk down the beach was the swirl of
a small bass in the surfline. I was halfway to the dock at
West Chop and I took stock of the sea in front of me. What
I saw amazed me. Offshore, the rip had formed but ran
nearly to the beach in front of me. I had been here a thousand times and never seen the irregular haystack waves so
close. To my left, behind this clash of opposing currents,
was a large area of still water. Calm and deep blue. It extended right up to the beach, about 50 yards across. It is
hard to explain, but I just knew there were fish there. A lot
of fish. Albies for sure, bass without a doubt and maybe
even bluefish. A light rain started to fall.
With shaking fingers and a quickly drying mouth I tied
my favorite albie lure to 12-pound test on the small rod and
dropped my gear in a wet pile. “There…, there!”, I gasped
as albies exploded 10 yards in front of me, right on the beach!
Green and silver torpedoes of power and grace porposed out
of the water and, “wham” one of them veered off course to
whack my lure. Then…, nothing. “Damn!” Frantic casting
and reeling for what seemed like hours ensued as I ran the
beach alone, begging breaking fish to hit the lure. A small
bass rolled on the spoon at the end of my retrieve and I soon
found myself sacrilegiously cursing their willingness to eat,
as they kept me from casting to the albies! Suddenly, I was
on, but it was not the light-speed run of an albie and a midsized bluefish soon flopped on the beach, in the wet sand.
Three species were all holding in this backcurrent, right on
the beach. Bass, bluefish, and false albacore, all feeding together in this magical eddy right on the beach. Unreal.
The rain fell harder, the air cooled, and fog rolled in, just
off the water. The rain dampened the sea and erased the
choppy waves. The eddy was soon dead calm. I could only
see the area of ocean directly in front of me and the rest of
the world ceased to exist. The sight of the sides and backs
of breaking tuna diving and slashing like knifes through
the dead-calm water was indescribable. My mind’s eye took
snapshot after snapshot and an albie slammed the lure with
an explosion of bright white spray. But then, again, nothing.
I would have stayed forever if the fish had but, suddenly, it
ended.
The sun broke though the haze as I walked back toward
the jetties. The ocean showed no sign of the life that had so
graphically displayed itself only minutes before. A tidal shift
or some secret switch had been thrown and I was alone with
my mental snapshots on the beach. I filleted the bluefish with
a silent prayer of gratitude and returned what was left to the
system that wastes nothing.
Later, I slept on the bus as it hummed and swayed back
to Boston. I relived each moment of that morning and each
display of the wonder of the natural world—embodied by
those fish as they slashed the surface and fed in a symphony
of grace and power. Albacore dreams from that magical
morning in the Fall, during the Derby, on the Vineyard.

Martha’s Vineyard
RESPECT OUR ISLAND
Breaking blues in the surf. A striper
cruising the trough of a wave. A sunrise
or sunset over the water. All of these are
moments we treasure as fishermen. Yet,
the opportunity to experience those
moments may someday be lost.
Please respect private property, leave
the beaches cleaner than you find them,
and above all, release those fish not meant
for the table carefully, so other fishermen
may know the same excitement as you.

Glory Days
ecently I was talking with Steve Amaral and he reminded me of the rich fishing history of his entire
family. They all fished together, his Dad, Gus, his
mother, Gertrude, his uncles and brothers. In later years his
parents moved to Live Oak, California but had to be here for
the entire derbies.
When Steve was 15 years old, he landed a 12 lb. 9 oz. striper,
winning the bi-monthly juvenile category. His prize was a bike
and a trip to Boston to be on the TV show, “Bump Hadley”.
Steve’s uncle, Joe E. Amaral had landed a 36 lb. 7 oz. striper
which Steve presented to Bump. Also going along the trip were
Harold Morris, co-chair of the Derby and Ben Morton, Secy.
In 1946 Steve’s dad, Gus weighed in the first fish in the
first Derby. The headquarters was on the 2nd floor above
where the Reliable store is now. Imagine having to drag the
fish to the second floor! It was also the meeting hall for the
Rod and Gun Club.
In 1975 Steve landed a 45 lb. 12 oz. striper, placing him in
the lead temporarily as Roger Silva took over with a 53 lb. 14
oz. striper. Steve’s dad, Gus landed a 39 lb. 2 oz. striper, so both
dad and son were on the board. Steve’s dad was the former
Chief of Police in Oak Bluffs and had a fish store here as well.
I can remember Gus, and his wife Gertrude coming into
the Derby Headquarters led by their chocolate lab “Mac”
with the fish to be weighed, in Mac’s mouth, gently, of course.
2006, marked the 60th year out of 61 of his entire derby.
He missed the 1956 derby because Uncle Sam needed him
in Korea.

Story by Helen Scarborough
suggested to Dan Hull that we do
something special for the fishermen.
At that time, the Chamber of Commerce had no previous records of
previous winners. I said that it would
be nice to have a record from day
one. He arranged with the Vineyard
Gazette to reserve a desk for me
there. I sat on the floor of the attic for
a couple of weeks, reading the original papers of every September/October paper regarding the derby and brought them to my desk
to compile. There were a couple of mistakes, but I was taking
info from the papers. Later, these mistakes were corrected.
Thus, the first derby booklet was born.
Also in 1976, Dan Hull decided to give out the “funny
monkey fins” to help keep money on the Island. He enlisted
the help of Casimer Michalezyk to design it. Dan wrote a
fictitious quote from a fictitious name of Walton Gross. He
said, “But best of all is the fisherman. He has learned a special
sense of value that endows him with uncommon worth. He
hasinherited the steel and spirit of a million years lashing
duel in the waters of the world.” Remember that Dan was a
reporter for the newspaper off island and he had a way with
words. Someone locally wrote about the profound quotes of
thatremarkable man. At the Derby Headquarters, Laura (Weigle) Honey, Jan MacDougall, Mae Deary and I giggled about
it knowing that it was all a figment of Dan’s imagination.
What wonderful memories. Maybe I should write a book?

Tucelli Boys
Three Generations of Tucelli Fishermen!
Their fishing tradiition started long ago with George’s father, Angelo Tuccelli, a long-time resident of Oak Bluffs, who
finished 2nd in the 1963 Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.
George remembers fishing with him off the Edgartown
Bridge, back in the 1940’s, where dual plaques stated a 16
inch limit on Striped Bass.
On the day this picture was taken (May 06), Chris caught
his first striper – 26 lbs, 42 inches.

The Tipsy Eel
en, here’s the way to fix up your bait, if you
want to catch the really big ones! – Take a
live eel and soak it in wine. It’ll be the liveliest bait you’ve ever handled! And it works, according
to Angelo Tuccelli of Somerville, Mass. He
did it to catch the Second Grand Prize-winning striped bass in the 18th Annual
Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. He landed the beauty at Anthier’s Bridge opening on the north side
Oak Bluffs-Edgartown road. Forty-two
pounds, 21/2 ounces! Angelo won second in
the non-resident surf division. First prize
went to Vineyard resident Henry Smith,
with a 45-pound, 8-ounce striper.
Hundreds of avid fishermen turn out for
this big event on the island. During the first
48 hours alone 280 fish were caught, 193
bass and 87 blue. There was $10,000 worth

Angelo is well-known on the Island being a summer resident for many years. All the spare time he can
find goes to his favorite sport, fishing. Another of his
interests is raising vegetables, some of them have been
sold to Vineyard Haven First National. He has two
daughters and a son in the Company; Ann is in the
store cash department, Somerville office; Celia in the
cheese room at Somerville, and George is a meat cutter

the
Derby Spell
T
inges of color begin to appear in trees along Island
roads. A northeast wind provokes a glance at the
thermostat and a sense of relief mixed with regret
frames our attitude towards the waning summer days.
It is “Derby time” on the Island, the start of the annual
Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby, and for
those fishermen who succumb to its spell, the days are now
measured in terms of tides and winds.
The Derby began in 1946 as a way to bring some economic
life to the Island’s shoulder season that began after Labor
Day. The first Derby attracted approximately one thousand
fishermen, all trying to catch the largest striped bass and
claim the Grand Prize of $1,000 — won by Gordon Pittman of
New York with a 47-pound striper. The second prize was a
building lot in the town of Gay Head.
The relative value of that second prize has changed
significantly since then, as have the categories of fish and
prizes. However, the excitement, camaraderie and fun of the
Derby remains the same.
In 1999 on the eve of the 53rd Derby I wrote about one
of those men, a dedicated surf fisherman who
embodied the hold of the Derby and represented its long tradition.
That year Jerry Jansen, Derby
Hall of Fame member, traveled from his home in
New Jersey to the
Vineyard to fish in
the Derby. He had
fished in every one but the first.
In the old days, it was the striper
that defined the Derby. Jerry Jansen
was one of the guys who would fish
all night on the mussel bed at Squibnocket or hike from Lobsterville down to the
Menemsha jetties before there was a paved road — a hike
he referred to as the “death march.”
When I spoke to him, the long nights spent testing body
and spirit in the surf were in the then 84-year-old fisherman’s
past. Like many Derby fisherman it was the camaraderie
forged on the beaches, not the hope of catching a winning
fish that still brought him to the Island.
Jerry, a former Marine who was wounded twice during
bloody fighting in the Pacific islands during World War II,
first came to Martha’s Vineyard because he had heard the
fishing was good, and for a chance to win some prizes.

62nd Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2007
Over the years, fishing for prizes and Derby glory became
secondary to meeting old friends on the beaches. It is a
sentiment shared by many.
The hold of the Derby is always difficult to explain to the
uninitiated. A fishing tournament? Well, yes, it is a tournament, but it is hardly prizes that motivate most fishermen.
Great fishing? Sometimes, but often fishermen go day
after day without catching a fish.
Glory? Sure, that is part of it; to win the acclaim of your
fellow fishermen. But, unless you manage to duplicate
the feats of Serge De Semov, a four-time Derby Grand Prize
Winner — three of them in a row — most of the other fishermen will just figure you got lucky.
So how does one explain what causes a person to spring
from a warm bed in the early morning darkness to stand in
the cold crashing surf for hours casting a lure.
How is it that an otherwise
responsible person will drop
everything (you wanted that
done when?) and follow even
the rumor of bonito.
What would make a husband have a more in-depth conversation with his eels than with
his wife?
For the fisherman with a hat
full of rusting buttons no explanation is needed, simply the acknowledgement that “it’s Derby time.”
Simply put, you need to fish the
Derby to understand it. You have to
experience a conversation at 2 am out
on Cape Pogue bar with a stranger you
just met, and then, when you meet him
year after year, you’ll understand why the
Derby is a fishing grand reunion.
You should feel the wind off the water and have your
plug stopped dead in the suds and foam of the Squibnocket
surf by the strike of a striper. And, hopefully, with skill and
more than a little luck you can experience the thrill of walking into the weigh station with a derby-winning fish and
hear the sounds of congratulations, sincerely given, echo in
you ears.
Nelson Sigelman, a former Derby committee member,
is The Martha’s Vineyard Times news editor
and fishing columnist.

Team Up:
by Matt Malowski
Two Rods are Better than One!
The MVSBBD Introduces the TEAM COMPETITION
The Derby Committee is pleased to announce the creation
of a new division to the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and
Bluefish Derby. This year we are proud to introduce the
Team Competition! The Team Competition has been created
to add another competitive element to the MVSBBD. Camaraderie, good sportsmanship and fun competition are the
fundamental reasons for the creation of this division. The
Team Competition will have both boat and shore divisions.
Participants must be entered in the Derby to participate in
the Team Competition, and must have a team name. The
teams are two-person teams and all team members must
abide by all Derby rules and state and federal regulations.
The way the Team Competition works is the heaviest
cumulative weight of fish by the end of the Derby will win
the competition. (Fish entered in the Team Competition must
first be weighed in under a participant’s individual badge.)
Only the heaviest fish of each species will count toward a
team’s cumulative weight. For example, if a team weighs in
50
|
62nd Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2007
a 40-lb striped bass, its next bass weighed in must be over
40-lbs. All four species of fish are eligible for weigh-in, but all
four species DO NOT have to be weighed in to qualify. For
example, a team that only weighs in a 50-lb. bass will win
over a team that weighs in a 20-lb bass, a 10-lb bluefish
and a 5-lb bonito, because the cumulative weight wins the
competition. Team members will also be responsible for
submitting their weigh-slips into a DROP BOX that will be
located at Derby Headquarters. Team members will have 24
hours to submit their weigh-slips. To keep with the motto
that camaraderie and sportsmanship are the key elements of
the competition, trophies will be awarded to the two Team
Winners (boat and shore) at the Awards Ceremony, as well as
a year of bragging rights.
Call up your best fishing buddy and sign up for the Team
Competition today to be the first in Derby history to call yourselves the best fishing team in New England. With the Derby
having over 3,000 participants, the two winning teams have
the ultimate in bragging rights. Good luck and have fun!

DerbyFish…
O
ne of the great successes of the Martha’s Vineyard
Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is its fillet program.
The benefits of this program are felt by countless senior
citizens of the island who receive the fresh fish. Each year, thousands of pounds of fillets of striped bass, bluefish, and bonito
are donated to the Vineyard Council on Aging, where they are
distributed to senior centers in each town. In 2006, nearly 5000
pounds of fillets were received and enjoyed. The fillet program
was started in 1976, so one can only imagine the number of
meals it has provided over the years. During the past decade,
Roy Langley has supervised the program. Roy also serves as
the Derby’s morning weigh master, and was a 2006 Derby Hall
of Fame inductee. While he remains understated, the program’s current success is largely due to hisefforts. Under his
watchful eye, the fillet program hasbecome a major component
of the Derby.
The Derby encourages participants who do not plan on eating their catch to donate it to the fillet program. We simply ask
that you care for the fish as though you planned to eat
it yourself, which means keeping it iced. Once a fish is weighed
at Derby Headquarters, it can be placed on the
fillet barge just outside. There, it will be filleted, packaged, and
refrigerated, to await distribution the next day, where it will
become somebody’s dinner. (Incidentally, the remaining
64

62nd Derby Souvenir Booklet · 2007
carcasses are also put to great use. They are used for bait by a
local lobsterman.)
In addition to Derby Committee members, who serve regular shifts, a “fillet master” is present every night to
coordinate this important duty. In many ways, the fillet
master represents what the Derby hopes to promote—service,
dedication, selflessness, education, and conservation. Committee member Matt Malowski served as fillet master during the
2001 Derby, where he experienced firsthand the true meaning
of the Derby. “I would have thought that standing outside in
the cold, wet autumn air, cutting up fish would be the last thing
I’d chose to do with my nights, but when I realized the tradition I was a part of and the number of people that were being
fed, the rain and wind seemed rather insignificant. Serving as
fillet master for those 35 days was incredibly gratifying.” Matt
was new to the island, but he immediately recognized and appreciated the Derby’s role in bettering the community through
the fillet program.
The Derby also welcomes able volunteers to help fillet;
please inquire at the Weigh Station if you’re willing to assist.
The barge attracts many onlookers, curious about the fish being
weighed in. It is the first stop for fish being donated to the fillet
program, which continues to be a major part of the Derby’s
service to the island.

all of Fame
The Derby Hall of Fame The Hall of Fame was created to recognize individuals and
organizations, including government bodies, who have made a “significant and positive impact on
the sportfishing community of Martha’s Vineyard and on the operation and goals” of the Derby.
Inductees must have demonstrated “good sportsmanship, honesty, integrity,” and exhibited a concern for
fish and the environment. We are extremely proud of these individuals and the significant contributions
they have made to the success of the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

and night for more than 15 years. She understands the
operation at the weigh station and has handled countless
issues each Derby to keep it operating smoothly. She is
always on top of things and has been the key figure at
the weigh station for many years.
Roy Langley
Roy is the longest running weigh master in the history of the
Derby. For the last 13 years, he has been the morning weigh
master exemplifying the spirit and image of the Derby. He is
recognized for his role as the ambassador at the weigh station
and the organization and distribution of the Derby's filet
program to senior citizens of Martha’s Vineyard.

Bob Boren
Bob was a long standing Derby Committee member
who worked hard to support the Derby in many ways,
but perhaps he was best known for his respnsibility for
handling the Derby’s raffle of a 4x4 Jeep.
For years, the committee’s raffle of a Jeep was the
main fundraiser supporting the tournament. At all of the
summer events on the island and at winter sportsman’s
shows around New England, the committee sold tickets
and it was Bob who was always at the center of that effort.
Bob’s house was often the meeting place after selling
tickets. After events like the Tisbury Street Fair, Bob and
his wife supplied the refreshments while the committee
totaled the night’s effort.
Bob and his Derby buddies spent many summer
nights selling raffle tickets on the corner of Circuit
Avenue in front of Giordano’s in Oak Bluffs, but it was
Bob who was always in charge, making new friends
and sharing great fishing stories with the public. Bob
was a tremendous ambassador for the Derby.

Al Brickman
Ray Ellis
No single individual on Martha’sVineyard had more
connections than did Al Brickman in the mid 1940’s.
This“Father”of the Derby took these ties in the fishing
community…, the business and tourism community,
the worlds of journalism, public relations, real estate and
transportation, combined them with his deep concern
for the welfare of the Vineyard, its people and natural
resources, and with a singularity of purpose, yet skillfully and patiently, forged the Martha’sVineyard Striped
Bass and Bluefish Derby into existence. This month
long event has, for the following four generations of
Islanders and our visitors, dramatically improved the
quality of life on Martha’s Vineyard.
Ray Ellis, one of the most renown American artists of
our time, has graciously donated his artistic talent to the
Derby since 1988. The paintings that he has annually
created for the Derby have generated the money to
make our scholarship program possible. In addition, he
has donated a portion of the proceeds from his book
“Fishing the Vineyard.”Through Ray’s efforts, nearly
$200,000 has been awarded in scholarships to worthy
graduates of the Martha’sVineyard Regional High School.
Cooper Gilkes
Cooper Gilkes has been an active member of the
Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby
Committee for over 2 decades. He was instrumental in
the rejuvenation of the Derby in the early 1980’s. He
assisted in the successful presentation to purchase the
Derby from the Martha’sVineyard Chamber of Commerce
in the mid 1980’s. His thoughtful opinions were very
helpful in the restructuring of the Derby as we entered
this most successful portion of our Derby history.
Cooper has been synonymous with the Kid’s Derby.
His ideas and thoughts led to the creation of today’s
mini-derby held on the first Saturday of the tournament. He religiously catches bait prior to the early
morning event and, with the help of his wife Lela, has
successfully managed this event since its inception.
John Crews
John dedicated himself to filleting fish during the
derby for over 2 decades. He served as the“Official Filet
Master” long before the committee assigned a filet
master. “Big John”, as he was known, worked both
weigh-ins each day with a broad smile and tireless
dedication until he was 87 years old.
Kib Bramhall
A member of the Derby committee for many years,
Kib Bramhall is a conservationist, skilled fisherman and
distinguished artist. Kib Bramhall has held both Derby
and world fly rod records. Most important, he brings a
sense of integrity and fair play to the sport of fishing
and the Derby. Respected both for his demeanor and
fishing accomplishments, he is honored for the example he has set for others over more than four decades
of Derby fishing.
Serge de Somov
Distinguished by his fishing skills, respected as a
gentleman, both on and off the beach, Serge de Somov’s
four derby victories, three consecutively, were unmatched
during the first half century of the Derby competition.
Known as the“Mad Russian”and“The Count”, due to
his aristocratic European background, Serge de Somov
caught the heaviest shore striped bass to claim victory
in 1964, 1965, 1966 and again in 1969. Surrounded by
an aura of mystery, Serge de Somov earned his place
among the legends of Derby history. He is honored for
his fishing accomplishments on dark island beaches
where the striper fisherman stand and cast!
Clayton Hoyle
Clayton Hoyle was a skilled rod maker and was instrumental in the creation of the Martha’sVineyard Rod
and Gun Club. Affectionately known as“The Instigator”
he always offered his opinions and ideas whether asked
or not. Several members of the Rod & Gun Club along
with Clayton helped foster the idea of an island fishing
tournament that later became the Martha’s Vineyard
Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

Ruth Hughes
Ed Landers
In 1947, Ruth Hughes began her daily reporting of
the Martha’sVineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby
for the column she wrote as a reporter for the then New
Bedford Standard Times. She chronicled the operations
of the day, wrote the names of the daily winners on the
derby blackboard, kept a running account of the day’s
largest fish and recorded for history special occurrences
of the day. Ruth was a Derby fixture at the weigh station
for 11 years doing just about everything that was needed
until 1958 when she assumed the role of Oak Bluffs
Town Treasurer until her retirement in 1976. Ruth’s
accurate written accounts of those early years of the
Derby are now housed in our Derby archives and are the
only factual consistent accounts of those DerbyYears.
You’ll never hear a negative word about Eddie. He was
a great fisherman and willingly shared his knowledge
and techniques with the people who fished with him.
Who fished with Ed? Every neighborhood kid that he
could fit into his buggy. They all have hilarious stories
of their adventures with Ed. They say from watching
him chase skunks down the beach to carrying his catch
back to the car at Squibby. He was a great teacher and
respected the rules of life and sportsmanship.
Ed Jerome
At the helm of the Derby, Ed Jerome guided the faltering tournament out of perilous waters and helped
build it into a successful and respected institution. As
the longtime President of the Derby corporation, Ed
Jerome has been a thoughtful and patient leader.
Whether through the Derby scholarship program or
charitable contributions, he has never waivered in his
belief that the Derby exists to contribute to theVineyard
community. A fisherman, educator and community
leader, he is honored for his extraordinary efforts in
making the Derby a truly unique Island institution.
Howard Leonard
Richard Morris
A founder of the Derby and committee secretary for
many years, Howard Leonard was an enthusiastic
Derby fisherman and tireless volunteer distinguished
by his good humor and kindness. Howard Leonard
personified the ideals of the Derby and was unstinting
with his time, particularly when it involved the young
people of the Island. He is honored for his service to
the Derby and the community of Martha’s Vineyard.
Richard Morris founded Dick’s Bait and Tackle in 1969.
He loved to fish, but most of all he loved to tell stories
about fishing. He never won a prize in the Derby, but
many a Derby yarn was spun in his tackle shop about the
one that got away by those who congregated there on a
regular basis. He enjoyed meeting new people every year
and looked forward to each fall knowing the Derby would
be starting. The Derby was a major part of his life and he
would be very proud to know he was in its Hall of Fame.
Janet Messineo
Jerry Jansen
Jerry first started fishing the Derby during the
second year of its existence.
Jerry has been an avid surf fisherman and is well
known to many. His great sense of humor and wealth
of fishing stories about the Derby are legendary.
Jerry’s book “Successful Surf Fishing” has helped
many a beginner with helpful tips.

Don Mohr
This “Beach Ambassador” can be found fishing the
beaches of Chappy from April until November. Don epitomizes what the Derby is all about. This sportsman always
has a smile and helping hand for his fellow anglers. He has
a deep respect for the resources and environment and
without hesitation will gently point out a rule, infraction or
abuse of these resources. Don served on the Committee
from 1984 to 1991. He was our Treasurer from 1985 to 1989
and Chairman from 1989 to 1991. During his tenure as
Chairman, the Derby began its transition from the Chamber of Commerce to an independently run event.
Janet Messineo epitomizes the spirit, excitement and
camaraderie of the 61 years of the Martha’s Vineyard
Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.
She has been an intricate part of the success of the
Derby as a committee member, a participant and as an
advocate for children and women participants. For
many years, she has created the coveted Derby fish
mount trophies with her expertise and skill as a taxidermist for award winners.
Janet makes friends with all she comes in contact
with. She fishes extremely hard and is constantly on
the leader board. Her spirit, sportsmanship and commitment to fishing are unmatched among participants.

Stephen Morris
Stephen Morris has been a member of the Derby
Committee for more than 15 years. During the mid 90’s,
Stephen was the chairman of the Derby and helped take the
Derby to new highs in participation, prizes and activities.
Stephen was one of the best Chairmen the Derby has had.
His organizational skills, commitment and knowledge of
the fishing industry have been his hallmarks. Many of the
improved practices used today in the Derby and Awards
Ceremonies were suggested by Stephen.
Stephen is a well respected local tackle shop owner. Each
year, his shop, Dick’s Bait and Tackle, registers the largest
number of participants in the Derby. His opinion is respected
by the Derby Committee members and his efforts for the
Derby this last decade and a half have been impressive.

Benjamin Morton
Daniel Shea
Arnold Spofford
A derby founding member, and Massachusetts
Steamship Lines executive, Ben Morton worked tirelessly
in both a professional and volunteer capacity to create
a Derby that would be enjoyed by Islanders and visitors
alike.A member of the Derby committee for more than 20
years, Ben Morton guided the Derby from its creation and
joint sponsorship under the boat line and the Martha’s
Vineyard Rod and Gun Club to its later management
by the Martha’sVineyard Chamber of Commerce. He is
honored for his wisdom, foresight and efforts on behalf
of the Derby and the entire Vineyard community.
For more than 25 years, Dan Shea has been an
extremely important part of the success, growth and
popularity of the Derby. In the mid seventies, while
working as a Manufacturers Representative for the J.
D. Keith Agency, Dan was instrumental in obtaining
many new sponsors including Zebco which became
the Kid’s Day Sponsor for many years. In 1985, Dan
and his business partner Joe Nicholas, formed NicholasShea Co., Inc. a rep agency with the Penn Reel Company
as their flagship line.Although Penn had been a sponsor
prior to this time, their contributions grew exponentially
with Dan’s help and dedication to the Derby. For twenty
years, Penn Reel Company and many other sponsors
that Dan represents have helped make the Derby what
it is today. Dan is an accomplished fisherman and a role
model in the fishing tackle industry.
Arnold Spofford was a member of the Derby
Committee for nearly 15 years beginning the the early
1980’s. He was well known for his famous Ballastic
Missile and Needle Fish Lures. Every year his wife Ellen
and he would fill their living room with parts that made
up their lures while putting them together. But“Spof”
was known best to us for his vision and forward thinking
for the Derby’s direction. It was Spof who created and
wrote the first Souvenir Booklets. His stories captured
the essence of this tournament and were matched by
his photography.
Spof was instrumental in the creation of the Ray Ellis
prints we sell each year and the Scholarships we now
offer to island graduates.
Arnold Spofford truly had an impact on the Derby as
we know it today.
Robert J. Post
Bob Post, self described as a“fisherman trapped in the
body of a dentist”, was also a gifted journalist, author,
Public Health official, Derby member and father, among
many other roles. Most importantly, Bob was a connector
and chronicler of the living history of the Derby. Happiest
when sitting astride a boulder on a Gay Head beach,
after fishing into the dawn, conversing with a Jerry
Jansen, Kib Bramhall, or another of the fishing denizens
of the preceding night, Bob turned these conversations
into the critically acclaimed book“Reading the Waters”,
which, more than any other source, illuminates and
brings to life the wonders and mystery of surf fishing
theVineyard and the Martha’sVineyard Striped Bass and
Bluefish Derby. The book, its several never published
chapters, hundreds of pages of notes and hours of recordings make up a wealth of research material for the future.
Arthur Winters
Greg Skomal
Greg has been on the Derby Committee for more than
a decade and a half. As an official state marine Biologist,
Greg was able to guide the Derby with valuable research
and insight on various conservation issues and political
impact. His research helped us established minimum
fish lengths for all fish in the Derby. His research
helped us to reduce the mortality rate of false albacore
by establishing a size that reduced the number of False
Albacore coming to our scales by more than 50%.
Greg is a nationally known speaker for his work on
sharks and other species, but has always found time to
explain a fin from a scale to local Kindergartners.
Greg somehow found time from his very busy work
schedule to be treasurer of the organization for many
years which included paying the bills, preparing the
income tax statements, dealing with our accountant
and preparing monthly financial statements for the
Board of Directors.
Arthur was a member of the Derby Committee from
1981-1992. He was part of the new group of Derby
Committee members who traveled about New England
trying to create a new image for the Derby. At that time,
participation was at a very low point and the image of
the tournament outside our island shores was less than
honorable.
Arthur was part of the first Derby sub group that
traveled to sportsman shows in Massachusetts and as
far away as NewYork. He hawked Jeep raffle tickets at
those shows and at all of the islands activities for that
decade. And it was Arthur and Cooper Gilkes who
gathered bait at 3 A.M. before each Kid’s tournament.
During that time Arthur was well known as one of the
best Bonito and False Albacore fishermen on the Island
and got on the Grand Board many times. His 11 pound
Bonito was an island record until just a few years ago.
Arthur Winters brings humor to all with his involvement
during the Derby. On one occasion, he walked into the
weigh station carrying a black violin case waiting in line
for his turn. As he approached the scale, he opened the
case displaying the tournament leading Bonito to a
tremendous roar of laughter. That is Arthur Winters.
Helen Scarborough
Helen was a fixture at the weigh-in for many years.
She was the weigh master and keeper of records many
years before the scale became digital and computers
replaced the pen and paper. She was known as
“mother hen”as she kept the busy weigh-in running
efficiently and exciting for young and old.

weighing in a total of 2302 fish.
Aside from managing a successful tournament, at the core
of the Derby’s mission is to give back to the the Vineyard
community and to support and protect recreational fishing
efforts. In 2006, the Derby awarded $20,000 in scholarships
to graduates of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School,
as well as $3000 in scholarships for island youngsters to
attend summer camps. Additionally, over 5000 pounds of

Derby Salutes
We sincerely thank you for your support, which allows
the Derby Committee to uphold its commitment to serve
the Vineyard community. Below, we recognize examples of
valuable service that we all benefit from. – J. P. Uranker
Bob and Fran Clay
Dear Derby Participants,
As we celebrate the Derby’s 62nd year, we would like
you to join us in recognizing two island residents who have
made significant contributions to our community and our
tournament. Their commitment to the success of our Derby
is highlighted below.
The Derby Committee is proud to have Bob and Fran
Clay as friends and supporters of the 62nd annual Martha’s
Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby
Bob and his family automobile dealerships have graciously sponsored our grand award prize for many years
and much to the delight of every participant.
Bob and Fran have been committed to our Derby, not
only as a sponsor, but as avid fishermen and island residents
as well. In 2001, Bob was a Grand Leader with the largest all
tackle boat bonito and Fran caught the largest all tackle boat
false albacore.
As members of the Chappaquiddick Committee for the
Trustees of Reservations, Bob’s voice of reason fights for
beach access and the protection and proper use of the natural
resources of Chappaquiddick.
Bob and Fran are graduates of St. Lawrence University
and will be celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary with
a trip to Alaska. No doubt, they will find time to wet a line.
From all of us, best wishes on your anniversary celebration
and thank you for all that you do. – Ed Jerome
Derby Youth Scholarships Honor
Sancy Pachico
F
or those fortunate to have known him, their lives
were richer. Francis “Sancy” Pachico’s smile was contagious, and his good-natured, genuine manner
added considerably to any group he was part of. Sancy
passed away in 1998, after a too-short retirement following
a career in education on Martha’s Vineyard punctuated as
the superintendent of schools. Many on the island still refer
to him as Coach Pachico, for he led the high school basketball team for many years. His work was dedicated to the
Vineyard’s children, and
he took great pride in living in a community that
valued education and encouraged children to pursue their interests. Sancy
was undeniably one of the
island’s most popular and
well-respected citizens, for
he touched the lives of
three generations of Vineyard school kids.
Following his retireSancy Pachico
ment, Sancy carefully considered how to spend his time. A man very close to his
family and friends, he did not want to commit to doing too
much. He chose membership on the Derby Committee,
which he believed to be one of the island’s most important
organizations. Sancy was instrumental in the creation of
the Derby Scholarship program, which has now contributed over $225,000. An educator at heart, he always
joined in activities designed for younger participants.
It is in Sancy’s memory and honor that the Derby Committee proudly awards the Sancy Pachico Memorial Youth
Scholarships. Formerly named the Camp Scholarships,
these annual awards are available to 12 children - four who
catch the heaviest overall fish in each species, four randomly-drawn Junior Derby participants, and four nominated by elementary school guidance counselors based on
financial need. Past recipients have used their scholarships
to attend summer sports camps, outdoor education
courses, dance classes, golf lessons, and many other varied
and meaningful activities. Sancy demonstrated a strong
devotion to children, and these scholarships will enable
many children to enrich their lives. We believe that Sancy
would be proud. – John Custer
Molly “Benji” Benjamin
“Benji” lost her brief but courageous battle with liver cancer on December 13, 2006.
Although she was not able to be a Derby participant, her column in the Cape Cod Times Sports
section was an invaluable link between the Vineyard fishing community and the New England Coast.
She touched a wide range of Island fishermen, commercial and recreational and we will miss her. MVSB&BD
