President’s Message
Aloha Members,
I hope all of had a great Fourth of July! Our Country celebrated it's
239th Birthday! Hauoli La Hanau, America!
I don't know how many of you enjoy watching a capitol 4th every year.
This year they celebrated their 35th year of broadcasting this show from
our Nation's Capitol. This year they featured Barry Manilow and the
National Symphony Orchestra and several Choirs. Hearing medleys
like O Beautiful, One Voice and America was so beautiful. Listening to
songs like Our National Anthem, God Bless America, Rhapsody in
Blue, My Country Tis of Thee, reminds us that America is not just a
Country we are a Treasure. It also reminds us to remember to be
forever thankful for all the Men and Women who have fought and
continue to fight for our Freedom. It sure made me feel so proud to be
an American.
This month we will be awarding our Scholarships to our Club members
and Ohana that are seeking higher education. This is always a proud
moment for our Club. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole stressed
education to be a priority for our people. We are ever so grateful that we
have so many members that work so hard all year to earn the money to
be able to fulfill that mandate that we are charged to do by our founder
and our kupuna. Come and meet these deserving members and ohana
that are working hard to make Hawai‘i a better place not only by
volunteering but also going on to school to become our leaders of
2
tomorrow. E PAEPAE ILUNA LOA I KA MALAMALAMA......HOLD HIGH
THE LIGHT OF KNOWLEDGE!
I look forward to seeing all of you at our General Membership Meeting
on July 23, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at Halawa Gym.
ALOHA, Toni Lee

LIONS CLUB INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club worked back to back Lions Club
Conventions. On June 22, 2015, our Club taught Lions Club Conventioneers
who came from all over the world the art of fresh flower lei making, Ti-Leaf
Wristlets, and Coconut Weaving. Each one attending this event held at
the Kahala Hotel, in between Swimming with the dolphins, and lunch they
each participated in these crafts walking away with finished products.
Teaching Coconut Weaving were: Mana and Noah Borden, Charles Kapua
and Soren Wong. Teaching Ti-Leaf Wristlets and lei were: Makana Roman,
Sanoe Lee, Kaonohi Borden, Kim Gay and Kainoa Manzano. Teachng
Fresh Flower Lei Making was a delight because we had so many beautiful
flowers. Teaching the ku‘i style of lei making were: Toni Lee, Carol Rosa
and Skylr Wong. We were lucky to have three colors of plumeria, the yellow,
pink and the variegated colors of yellow and orange.
The Conventioneers were in awe over the beautiful flowers and the
beautiful aroma in the room. They were so excited!
4
We also had the bougainvillea, purple crown flower and puakenikeni. We
want to thank Chrissy Anjo for preparing the ti-leaf kits, Toni Lee for
providing ti-leaves and ti-leaf lei and Chrissy Anjo, Merna Akana, Jennifer
Gomes, Toni Lee, Dee Dee, Sean and Maydeen Maika, Dr.Linda and Nola
Nahulu, Charles Kapua, Carol Rosa, Moana Sanders for all the flowers
Charles Kapua, and Merna Akana for the Coconut Leaves and Anika Borden
for preparing the coconut leaves. The event went from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
in the afternoon and the conventioneers left with a great feeling of
accomplishment in learning these crafts.
On Friday, June 26, 2015, at the Honolulu Zoo we met with the Lion's
Club Young Adults to teach them Poi Pounding, Coconut Weaving and TiLeaf wristlets. Mahalo to Chrissy Anjo and Alberta Low for the ti-leaf kits,
Soren and Skylr Wong and Kim Gay for the coconut leaves and Donovan
Ronnie Nacapuy who came out to teach coconut weaving too and Charlie
Kapua and Toni Lee for the Taro. Teaching the ti-leaf wristlets were Skylr
Wong, Kim Gay and Kainoa Manzano. Teaching the poi pounding were
Charlie Kapua, Kawika and Noah Borden, Kaleiaina Lee and Dylan Pilger
and his wife who was also the Japanese interpreter. It was interesting to see
many of our High Schools have Leo Clubs that many of our young students
knew and got to teach their friends about our culture. It was great! There
were 450 Conventioneers at the Zoo and about 150 at the Kahala Hotel.
Makana Roman helps the Lioness with her Ti-leaf wristlets.
5
Soren Wong, Mana and Noah Borden and Charlie Kapua teach,
conventioneers how to make birds, fish, and head bands with coconut
leaves.
Skylr Wong and her friend Kainoa Monzano teach the conventioneers how
to string a lei. The plumerias were so beautiful. Each attendee strung
their own lei.

HALI‘A ALOHA
"Kulu ka waimaka, ue ka‘opua" "The tears continue to fall, the
clouds weep"...in loving memory of our beloved members and
friends who now rest in the house of the Lord.
The Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club lost two more members
since our last newsletter. Both of these Na Keonemana were born
and raised in Moloka‘i passed away. First it was Ernest U‘u and
then a past President Wendell Ka‘ahiki Lee. Both attended
Kamehameha Schools and were football players in their day.
Ernest was still working at the airport in Contract Services and
Wendell was retired from Federal Service in Communications.
Wendell and his best friend Joe Reyes who passed away last month
were both great singers and sang in the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian
Civic Club Choral Group and the Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club.
We shall always remember the ono Hawaiian Stew that Wendell
was known for when we would have our Hawaiian Stew Dinner
Fund Raisers and Casino Nights. All three of them passed away
in the month of June.
Wendell Lee's services will be on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Newtown Chapel
in Aiea, with visitation at 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. Service will
begin at 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and lunch will be served from
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Hawaiian
Memorial Park in the Veteran's Section. If you will be attending
the services, please wear you club uniform or red and white.
ALOHA NO ERNEST.....ALOHA NO WENDELL. WE
SHALL MISS THEM GREATLY! THEY ALL SERVED THEIR
COUNTRY PROUDLY!
