Our Country celebrated it's 239th Birthday! Hauoli La Hanau, America! I don't know how many of you enjoy watching a capitol 4th every year. This year they celebrated their 35th year of broadcasting this show from our Nation's Capitol. This year they featured Barry Manilow and the National Symphony Orchestra and several Choirs. Hearing medleys like O Beautiful, One Voice and America was so beautiful. Listening to songs like Our National Anthem, God Bless America, Rhapsody in Blue, My Country Tis of Thee, reminds us that America is not just a Country we are a Treasure. It also reminds us to remember to be forever thankful for all the Men and Women who have fought and continue to fight for our Freedom. It sure made me feel so proud to be an American. This month we will be awarding our Scholarships to our Club members and Ohana that are seeking higher education. This is always a proud moment for our Club. Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana‘ole stressed education to be a priority for our people. We are ever so grateful that we have so many members that work so hard all year to earn the money to be able to fulfill that mandate that we are charged to do by our founder and our kupuna. Come and meet these deserving members and ohana that are working hard to make Hawai‘i a better place not only by volunteering but also going on to school to become our leaders of 2 tomorrow. First it was Ernest U‘u and then a past President Wendell Ka‘ahiki Lee. Both attended Kamehameha Schools and were football players in their day. Ernest was still working at the airport in Contract Services and Wendell was retired from Federal Service in Communications. Wendell and his best friend Joe Reyes who passed away last month were both great singers and sang in the Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club Choral Group and the Kamehameha Alumni Glee Club. We shall always remember the ono Hawaiian Stew that Wendell was known for when we would have our Hawaiian Stew Dinner Fund Raisers and Casino Nights. All three of them passed away in the month of June.
