GROWING UP
in Unique Surroundings
2 | Kronplatz Summer | Editorial
Puez-Odle Nature Park
When you grow up here, you feel like you’re in a treasure chest. That chest is filled with treasures of nature,
adventure, and culture. I had the great fortune of my
parents also conveying to me how important and beneficial it was and is to devote oneself to these facets
which our local surroundings have to offer, and to take
full advantage of them. Starting out from early childhood, action was already in store throughout the entire
year. From the fun of making ski tracks as a little rascal
in the wintertime to adventuresome hikes and tree climbing, there was so much available to us, and the memories of it all conjure up a grin on my face even today.
Many years may have gone by, but there were still
new corners to be discovered in our valley again and
again which constantly guaranteed excitement and adventure. Powdery slopes unspoiled by a single track,
rough rocks to climb, and an amazing bike route lured
my friends and me. And these moments that I was able
to experience with my circle of childhood friends are
also unforgettable. Even years later, it is still possible
to have a fantastic time discussing what great moments
we were able to experience so close to home. We recognized in what unique surroundings we were privileged to grow up and also that could be experienced so
directly. Our local mountains had me under their spell,
and up to this very day, they still have not let me go.
Whether it is as the result of a comfortable ski tour and
the closely associated stop in a mountain inn, the steep
face of a Dolomite with good handholds, or a convivial
hike to a summit in the company of my family – our
local mountain landscape has everything to offer. And
that is precisely what makes me so happy and satisfied.
And just as delightful as it is exciting is the fact that the
treasure chest, which I was allowed to open as a child,
has new treasures in store again and again in the local
mountains which are waiting to be discovered. And
I will definitely be ready for another such adventure...
I would like to wish everyone countless hours filled with
adventure, new experiences, and good company in the
mountains of the Pustertal-Val Pusteria.

The picturesque city of Brunico-Bruneck, with around
sixteen thousand inhabitants, is the heart and soul of
the green Pustertal-Val Pusteria. The good geographical location, the surging life in the historically significant streets, and the savoir-vivre of the people all
make the city both lively and endearing.
Brunico, whose first documented historical mention dates
back to 1256, is lively not only for its residents, though, but
rather it is so desirable that many guests would also love
to live here. In both 2014 and 2015, Brunico received the
award as the “happiest small town in Italy” (by the Italian
financial journal Il Sole 24 Ore).
Hiking trails, trekking tours, mountain biking and downhill
routes, health spas, family activities, culinary highlights,
and all of it crowned by picturesque views, fresh mountain
air, and honest hospitality – in Brunico and the surrounding villages, the summer is filled with variety like nowhere
else.

TRADITIONAL
AND MODERN
The Moessmer Fabric Factory, the oldest industrial company
in the Pustertal-Val Pusteria, is still setting trends!
Clothing should feel comfortable and light and
yet, at the same time, be durable. It should warm
when it is cold, cool when it is hot, and also be
water-resistant and windproof, yet at the same
time breathable. But with all of that, it should still
look good, because that is also how we show who
we are. Clothing gets closer to us than practically
anything else, and it is also for that reason that we
place such high demands on it! Our grandparents
were already aware of the many advantages of
clothing made from wool, and the Moessmer Fabric
Factory continues to make use of this. And thanks
to this company in the Pustertal, these fabrics made
from sheep’s wool are highly modern throughout
the entire world to this very day.
The Moessmer Fabric Factory has been producing
loden felt fabric at its location in Brunico since 1894
and is consequently the oldest industrial company
in the Pustertal. Thanks to the merger between a
Viennese merchant and a Pustertal company at the end
of the nineteenth century, the Moessmer Fabric Factory
came into existence and immediately became a court
supplier to the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian
monarchy. The emperor and the entire bourgeoisie
liked the fine loden felt fabric for hunting, and as a result
of this, it became presentable at court and Moessmer
became a large-scale producer. After the two World
Wars, production was expanded to include tweed, and
twenty years ago, Walkloden (fulled loden or boiled
wool) was also added. Around fifteen years ago,
the company finally began to concentrate exclusively
upon absolutely top-quality products. “Away from the
mass quantities, into the niche, and to the top,” says
Walter Niedermair, the head of the company. “A
complete turnaround of the market and the product.
More doesn’t work.” And his words are backed up
with success. Today, renowned fashion designers
from Prada, Armani, and Dolce&Gabbana purchase
their fabrics from the Pustertal firm. And Victoria
Beckham also has clothing with Moessmer loden
felt in her collection. “The fashion houses don’t use
the name ‘loden’, because that term is known for the
most part only in the Alps,” explains Niedermair, “so
they just call it a great fabric with fantastic properties.”
The fabric is water-resistant, windproof, durable, it can
absorb or give off up to 30% moisture as needed, and
is nevertheless a completely natural product. Today,
loden felt is an attitude of living.
CatWALK
Fulled cloth has also been produced by Moessmer for
twenty years. This fabric is unique, because it is not bulky
like other materials, but rather it is a fabric that radiates
Italian flair and lightness. “With fulled cloth, we are a
leader on the world market,” says Niedermair. “From
Chanel and Louis Vuitton to makers of traditional
Tyrolean costumes, they all use fulled clothes from
Moessmer. We have demanding customers. But our
standard is to also be uncompromising with the prices,
too. That means that we have to be very precise and
reliable with everything, including with deliveries and
service. Precision, reliability, price guarantee: these
are well-worn terms that are also extremely current, and
with us they are also facts!“.

Sustainable Citizens of the World Moessmer and Interiors
In spite of all of this, the idea of sustainability is not forgotten. The Moessmer company has received the Global Organic Textile Standard logo, which means that
everything can be traced: from the origin of the sheep to
the dye. And work is also continuously done on the sustainability of the company. In approximately two years,
it will be possible to claim a positive CO2 balance, in
spite of the lengthy transport of the wool to Brunico and
the export of the fabrics. Because today, only 30% of
the fabrics remain in Italy, with the remaining 70% going
to the rest of Europe, America, and now already 15%
of the exports going to China. These days, it is necessary to adapt to geopolitical conditions. Moessmer, a
small reality with some sixty employees, deals daily with
the complexities of the wider world. Because selling all
over the globe also means being a citizen of the world.
The company is present at various tradeshows among
other places, Shanghai, London, and Paris. The leader
of the company explains, “On the outside, you can see
what’s going on with the market. You can understand
what makes the market tick. When you travel a lot, you
get a feel for certain themes, colors, fibers“.
14 | Kronplatz Summer | Moessmer
Since the interest in fabrics has also grown for interior
furnishings, Moessmer began to dabble in this area.
“We took a lot of time and experimented a great deal
in order to finally bring out a collection that is absolutely
suitable for the furnishing sector and that meets all of
the technical requirements, such as fire resistance guidelines,” Niedermair explains. “We have brought a really
great product onto the market.” The fabrics from Moessmer create a pleasant climate in the space, which is why
many hotels are furnished with it.

The seats of the trains in South
Tyrol-Südtirol are finished with
fabrics from Moessmer, and
soon the trains of the Italian
railway company Trenitalia will
be equipped with loden felt
throughout the entire country!
Moessmer and the Arts
And if that is not enough, Moessmer also works with art
projects. This began by chance, here onsite in Brunico, as Niedermair recounts, “Three female artists were
looking for a studio, and we had a section of the factory that we didn’t need. That was exactly ten years
ago.” The studio was made available free of charge
to the artists – Julia Bornefeld from Kiel, Germany, Sylvie Riant from Paris, and Willma Kammerer from South
Tyrol-Südtirol – and all they had to do was create
one project of their choice per year using fabrics from
Moessmer. Niedermair reports, “Over time, they had
more and more fun working with our materials.” In
the summer of 2015, unique urban art benches were
created. With them, every seat had its own message.
Thus one bench has “Stay” written on it as an invitation
to linger a while, while another depicts a black cloud
as an indication of the capriciousness of nature. A third
one uses men’s trousers to show the production process
at Moessmer, and a fourth is a plea for non-violence
with an image of guns with the barrels tied in knots.
The DNA of Moessmer is always present with these,
since the fabrics in the 3 cm (1 1/4 in.) thick backrests
have been encased in resin. Today, the benches are
located on Strada Bastioni-Am Graben in Brunico.
With the opening in July 2015 of the MMM Corones,
the sixth and final Messner Mountain Museum of extreme mountain climber Reinhold Messner, the benches
were also on the peak of the Kronplatz. But on that day,
Moessmer was also represented in a different way. The
museum building was covered in blue loden felt that was
similar to a curtain, and it only dropped at the opening.
“At the time of the opening,” Niedermair recalls, “I was
in New York, and I read about it in the New York Times.
That was unique.” He was also enthusiastic about the
architect who was responsible, Zaha Hadid, and calls
the museum “something really successful.”

And the whole Moessmer company also seems to us
to be something really successful. As a result of its clear
positioning and the urge to be just slightly ahead of the
impetus of time, the 120-year-old company is younger
and more dynamic than ever.

IDENTITY
THE HISTORY, LANGUAGE, AND
TRADITION OF A CULTURAL REGION
The Kronplatz Holiday Region is home not only to native speakers of German and Italian, but also to a very
special linguistic group: the Ladins. Their areas of settlement at the entrance to the Val Badia-Gadertal valley in
the communities of Marebbe-Enneberg and S. Martino
in Badia-St. Martin in Thurn are a part of the linguistic
and cultural region of Ladinia, which is composed of the
Val Badia-Gadertal and Val Gardena-Grödnertal valleys as well as parts of the Val di Fassa in Trentino and
Livinallongo and Ampezzo in Veneto.
Ladinia thus lies in the heart of the Dolomites, divided between the provinces of Bolzano-Bozen, Trento, and Belluno. Ladin is a separate and distinct Romance language
which developed from the vulgar Latin that was spoken
in the Alps toward the end of the Roman Empire. The
language of the Rhaetians, who had settled here before the Romans, also left its mark on the vocabulary and
grammar of Ladin. The Ladins are closely tied to their
homeland. Just like every small linguistic community, it is
necessary for them to constantly defend their cultural identity. Thus a special consciousness has developed for the
language, culture, and traditions that are cared for and

handed down with pride. Great esteem is enjoyed
by the customs that have been passed on and the
precious costumes, which are sewn by the women
of the valley in lavish handicraft from the most costly
of fabrics.
Every article of clothing is unique and says a great
deal about the person wearing it. Another characteristic of the precious traditions and of this people’s
sense of belonging is the typical Ladin residential
settlement, the so-called Viles. Several families inhabited these settlements together and mutually assisted each other with daily chores, or else they shared
equipment for better cooperation in the fields. Anyone wishing to learn more about the inhabitants of
Ladinia is recommended to visit the Museum Ladin
C’iastel de Tor at Thurn Castle in San Martin (Badia), which documents the history, language, archaeology, economy, and handicrafts of Ladinia.

“Micurà de Rü” Ladin Cultural Institute
The Ladin Cultural Institute headquartered in San Martin was founded in memory of the Ladin linguist Micurà de Rü, who died in 1847.
The principal tasks of the Institute include the protection and support of the Ladin language and culture. The Institute therefore
also supports cultural bodies, associations, and organizations that
share its own objectives.
Today, most of the Ladin texts are kept in the Institute’s library,
which is open to visitors from Monday to Thursday from 10:00
A.M. to 12:00 noon and from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. as well
as Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon. During the summer,

PUEZ-ODLE NATURE PARK
This encompasses an area of around 10,722 hectares (41
square miles) and can be called the “construction shed” of
the Dolomites. In particular, geologists find there all of the
types of rock, layers of deposits, and weathered forms of
minerals that are typical to the Dolomites. Plateaus that have
developed into karsts, majestic rows of cliffs, gently rolling,
fertile Alpine pastures situated against bizarrely rugged
mountain silhouettes, deeply carved erosion valleys, and
dark coniferous forests form a variety of landscapes that are
rarely to be found in such a restricted space. The wealth of
fossils provides a view of the different eras in the history of
the earth.

VEDRETTE DI RIES-AURINA NATURE PARK
With an area of around 31,320 hectares (121 square miles) and
over eighty peaks topping 3,000 meters (nearly 10,000 feet), it
has the most glaciers of any nature park in South Tyrol. Another
characteristic feature of the park is the wealth of water in all of its
many forms. Mountain streams plunge over sheets of rock, cliffs,
and valley plateaus into the depths. Out of the many waterfalls
here, the Cascate di Riva-Reinbachfälle is particularly worthy of
mention. It leaps from a valley plateau near Campo Tures-Sand in
Taufers far below, providing a worthwhile hiking destination. At the
end of the Valle Anterselva-Antholzertal is the Lago d’AnterselvaAntholzer See lake. It is the third largest natural lake in South Tyrol
and, along with its surrounding area, is protected as a biotope.

VEDRETTE DI RIES-AURINA
VISITOR CENTER
in Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers
The Visitor Center has been conceived according to the nature park’s motto “The boundaries of nature and the boundaries of man”. A
three-dimensional relief map depicts mountains,
paths, refuges, lakes, and waterfalls. The time
line brings the story of the origin of the mountains
to life, with their creation being shown as a sort
of rock puzzle. Minerals and life-sized, handcarved birds of prey astonish visitors.

DOLOMITES
UNESCO
An exhibition provides insight into the fascinating
world of the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal valley. In the film
“Prettauer Leben”, the inhabitants of the village
are given the opportunity to speak. Four paths
that continue on to cross the Austrian border form
the heart of the exhibition and provide information about the variety of nature and the region’s
history.
FANES-SENES-BRAIES
NATURE PARK HOUSE
in San Vigilio
Visitors are informed about the origin of the Dolomites, life at the Alpine pasture, and fossils, especially
the bones of the cave bear that were discovered in
the nature park. The central component of the exhibition is the reproduction of the Conturines Cave.
PUEZ-ODLE NATURE
PARK HOUSE
FANES-SENES-BRAIES NATURE PARK
This park covers an area or approximately 25,453 hectares
(98 square miles). It has been a UNESCO World Heritage
site since 2009. Broad sections of the park are of great
scientific significance as a result of its complex geomorphology. The Fanes and Senes plateaus, a popular hiking area,
are characterized by the formation of karsts, with the typical
fissures and hollows in which small lakes form. Scattered
across the mountain slopes are the typical Ladin hamlets
known as viles with their ancient wooden construction. These groups of farms were self-sufficient since they shared working quarters, ovens, etc. with each other.
in S. Maddalena-FunesSt. Magdalena-Villnöss
An aerial image that can be walked on makes it
possible for visitors to get a bird’s eye view of the
nature park. The “Touch the Mountains” exhibition area deals with the main topic of the nature
park, the geology of the Dolomites. In the “Hall
of Natural Wonders”, visitors can learn about
animal furs, bird eggs, feathers, animal tracks,
teeth, antlers, and medicinal herbs.

MMM CORONES
South Tyrol’s Highest Museum
The summit of the Kronplatz is the location of the
sixth Messner Mountain Museum, at an elevation
of 2,275 m (7,464 ft.) The unique location of
the mountain, at the intersection of the three
cultures in South Tyrol – German, Italian, and
Ladin – was the impulse and the incentive for
Reinhold Messner to build his last museum here.
The museum is dedicated to the topic of “Trad.
Adventure Alpinism”.

PEACE BELL
Enthroned on the 11 m (36 ft.) wide viewing

inscription on the Concordia 2000 reads Donet

ON THE
UP
The Summer Holiday Region...
For Activities, Experiences,
and Living it Up!
The Dolomites and the Pustertal-Val Pusteria are
among the loveliest hiking areas in all of South
Tyrol-Südtirol. It is not so often that one runs across
Alpine valleys with such a wide variety of hiking
possibilities, from a simple, comfortable stroll to a
challenging glacier tour. In addition to the impressive views from the hiking trails that at times reach
high alpine elevations, there are also wonderful flora and fauna to discover, not to mention the wealth
of bodies of water: babbling brooks and thundering waterfalls, along with their biotopes teeming
with life. Educational thematic paths also make it
possible to experience interesting facts about the
location and its surroundings at the same time. And
those who want to make it all the way to the top
can try for the peak of one of the more than eighty
mountains in the area that tower to three thousand
meters (ten thousand feet).

ALPINE REFUGES AND MOUNTAIN HUTS
During your hike, you of course have to also take care of your body.
And as a special reward after a taxing tour, or simply just to pause for a
long time and enjoy the surrounding mountain landscape to the fullest,
you can take a look at the mountain huts, snack stations, and Alpine
refuges in the Kronplatz Holiday Region at:

Mountainbike | Kronplatz Summer | 45
Along with many other well-built bike paths, the Pustertal-Val Pusteria bicycle route is one of the highlights
of the Kronplatz Holiday Region. It runs between the
main ridge of the Alps and the Dolomites, starting
near Bressanone-Brixen and ending on the other side
of the eastern border of South Tyrol-Südtirol in Austria.
The bike path lies within a landscape with great variety and can be perfectly combined with the railway.
One very popular option is to ride from San CandidoInnichen to Brunico-Bruneck and return by train.
The main route of the bicycle path leads along the
Rienza-Rienz through the valley, but a detour into one
of the side valleys of the Pustertal is certainly to be recommended. Ride into the the Val Casies-Gsieser Tal,
to Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers, or into the Valle Aurina-Ahrntal: the possibilities are practically unlimited.

as well as one spectacular landscape
experience after another await the active
pleasure cyclist from the foothills of the
Bavarian Alps through the Dolomites to
Venice, the city on the lagoon. Whether
all the way through on the bicycle or in
sections with the help of train or bus, the
route is alluring not only because of the
regional variety and athletic challenge,
but also because of the different themes of
experience and adventure. Bike-friendly
hosts and service providers will pamper
the guest with regional cuisine, service,
and information on bicycles as well as accommodations that are perfect for cyclists.

It was love that introduced Alois Steinmair to the
smugglers of the Val Casies. When the senior farmer of the Feldererhof farm in Santa Maddalena-St.
Magdalena, who is now seventy-five years old, said
“I do” to his wife Maria back in 1969, he married
into a family that had been initiated into the secret
business between the Val Casies in South Tyrol-Südtirol, Italy and the Villgraten Valley in East Tyrol, Austria. The First World War had torn apart the two
sections of formerly united Tyrol. Between the Alpine meadows on one side of the Defereggen Alps
and those on the other side, there was suddenly an
international border.
The people knew how far they were allowed to go,
but not all of them stuck to that – and among them was
Maria’s father, Josef. Josef knew every path, every hollow, every hiding place on the meadows above Santa Maddalena. As a young man, he had spent quite
a number of years on the Stumpf Alm mountain hut in
order to help the family of his brother who had died
young. He himself owned the Tscharniet Alm mountain
hut located not far away, and he often met with the
Alpine dairymen from the other side. It was known what
was needed on one side and what was missing on the
other. “With the Austrians, corn meal, wine, and rice
were scarce commodities, and for us, it was sugar and
saccharine,” recalls Maria, as she sits with her husband
Alois in the traditional wood-paneled Tyrolean Stube of
the Feldererhof farmhouse. The building is 350 years
old and holds many secrets, not least of which is the
hiding place in the attic where the smuggled sugar supplies used to be stockpiled.
Cousin Hans is present as a guest. He was born in
1931, once worked with Maria’s father at the Stumpf
Alm mountain hut, and helped out smuggling the hot
goods in backpacks, baskets, and wooden back frames
past the state tax authorities over the border. “It took us
three quarters of an hour from the meadow up to the
Kalksteinjöchl,” says Hans, “and from there around one
and a half hours down into the Villgraten Valley. Each
of us carried either 50 kilos [110 pounds] of sugar or
25 liters [the equivalent of 33 bottles] of wine. Sometimes we took a little bit of a taste,” he confesses, “and
then we refilled the wine bottles with water.“
The smuggled supplies of corn meal, wine, and sugar
were primarily used for household consumption and
were either exchanged for other goods (for example,
five kilos of corn meal were worth one kilo of butter) or
else taken over the border as a favor. “Once,” Hans
recalls, “a priest asked me to bring over a bicycle – without charge, of course.“
But they didn’t always have to be satisfied doing the
Lord’s work – especially when cattle and sheep were
smuggled.

HIKING TIP
ALONG THE OLD
SMUGGLER PATHS
In the 1960s, when the border controls between
South Tyrol-Südtirol and Austria were increasingly intensified after various assassinations, the
Casies smugglers ceased their secret dealings
little by little. But anyone who wishes to go hiking
on their old trails can still follow the “Smuggler’s
Path” in the Val Casies, one of three cross-border
instructional paths.

>> „The animals were simply driven over to us from the Austrian side over the
Alpine pastures,” says the senior farmer Alois who, as a conscientious son-in-law,
helped his father-in-law with the cattle trade. “The financial authorities didn’t
know to whom each cow belonged, since back then, the animals were not marked.” Once they arrived in the Val Casies, a livestock trader from Cortina was
waiting for the ruminating smuggled goods. “He loaded the livestock onto his
truck and left,” Maria recalls. “Once, my father got a small fortune for a load.“
The secret business could be really lucrative, but also dangerous. It was especially the Austrian financial authorities who were serious when it came to smuggling. During a shooting in the early 1960s, a man from Santa Maddalena was
seriously wounded.
In order to not end up in the hands of the law enforcement officials, the smugglers set out for the most part on weekends when the controls were sparse, or else
on foggy days when visibility was limited. Baskets were nailed shut with boards
and then carried on the head, as if they were empty. “Once they caught Mene

Maria recounts. “She was brought to the Tax Police station
in San Martino like a felon.“
And then? “She wouldn’t talk about it.“
And thus the extra income from the secret business continued
in a valley in which rye and barley could be planted, but
where otherwise there was hardly any opportunity to earn
Falcade
money. People had to be inventive
in order to feed their
families. “My father-in-law told me that he had paid for his
wedding reception with smuggling money,” Alois says. “So
you could say that he, too, did it out of love.“

FESTIVAL
>> In Brunico and San Martin (Badia), all jazz lovers can experience
the jazz music of the finest live and up close for an entire ten days.
From June 24 to July 4, 2016, international stars and well-known local
artists will take their instruments in hand and meet at unusual locations
in order to make unusually good music. Plan to be there – and plan
to be moved.
“Outdoors” will be the word of the summer of 2016, because there
will really be a large number of events outside, on the mountain, at the
lake, or even in the forest. But to truly know how much imagination the
residents of the Pustertal-Val Pusteria have for their festivals, you really
have to find out for yourself – it would take the thrill out of it to reveal
everything here.
Well, okay, the Tures Street Food Fair and the Valdaora Street Food
Fair, but also the Valle di Casies Alpine Farmhouse Festival are just
some of the highlights of the many culinary celebrations in the Pustertal. Don’t lose your head over trying to decide between the “Kirschtakrapfn” fritters, the “Schlutza” ravioli, and a pleasurable glass of a
good “Roatn” red wine – it’s just the perfect opportunity to lose your
head over your sweetheart instead!
So here’s to us! And to an endless summer!

Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers
Cadipietra
San Giovanni
The completely furnished, very well-preserved Taufers Castle
is among the largest and most beautiful castles in all of Tyrol.
Children have a great time at the “hands-on armoury”.
Art lovers will enjoy the frescoes by Renaissance artist
Friedrich Pacher, while romantics will be thrilled
by the picture book castle complex itself.
The castle administration draws visitors throughout
the year with special exhibitions, cultural events,
and a castle tavern in the inner courtyard.

NEUHAUS CASTLE
Gais
A hilltop, a picturesque inner courtyard, and a castle
tavern: that is Neuhaus Castle. More charming than
defiant, and yet the home to great spirits: Oswald
von Wolkenstein spent several years of his restless
life here around 1520, and the famous American
poet Ezra Pound also found a refuge for himself
and his family here during the turmoil of the
Second World War. Today the castle
houses a hospitality establishment.

4 WELSPERG CASTLE
Monguelfo - Welsberg
For centuries, now, the castle has watched
over the entry to the Val Casies-Gsieser Tal.
Its first documented mention was back in
1126. For nearly eight hundred years,
it was in the possession of the Welsperg
family. In the summer, the gates of the
castle open up to visitors for concerts,
exhibitions, and festivals of all kinds.

SWIMMING AND ENTERTAINMENT LANDSCAPE
in Campo Tures-Sand in Taufers
In the midst of the unique natural setting of the Valli di Tures and Aurina-Tauferer
Ahrntal, the swimming and sauna landscape awaits you. It is distinguished by the
interior space that is flooded with light, which seamlessly blends into the natural
landscape. The infrastructure that was crowned with an architectural award offers
five pools in both indoor and outdoor areas, a unique natural swimming pond, a
generous palette of sauna packages, a Kneipp cure facility, and lovely quiet areas
both inside and out.
CRON 4
ADVENTURE POOL WITH HEALTH SPA AREA
in Brunico-Bruneck/Riscone-Reischach
The division into competitive and fun areas guarantees the ideal swimming experience
for families, children, and serious swimmers. The indoor area consists of five pools: a
competitive, fun, active, sun, and baby pool all together provide a water area of 800
sq. m (8,600 sq. ft.). This of course includes a 75 m (250 ft.) long tunnel slide and a
spacious sunbathing lawn. In the sauna area (world sauna with six pearls and third
place in the international sauna list from INSAUNA), a varied programme with water
over hot coals takes place every day.
Relax with the “good things” from nature. Choose from between massages and baths with herbs,
hay, or algae, and take advantage of the antiinflammatory healing powers of water from sulphur springs. Swim your stress away and enjoy
letting your day float away in the sauna. Even
just doing nothing can be a very fulfilling activity.
In public health spa facilities and in the hotels in
the Holiday Region, expert hands will see to your
physical and spiritual well-being, so that you will
be guaranteed of returning from your vacation

HEALING NATURALLY …
BERGILA HERB PILLOWS WITH ALPINE HERBS
Back in grandmother’s day, people were already swearing by the effects of herb
pillows. Flowers from the hayfields at high Alpine locations are mixed with herbs
from inspected organic cultivation and enriched with essential oils in a special process. Herb pillows have a calming effect on the nervous system and a pleasant
balm effect upon the breathing passages. Since 1912, the family-run operation
Bergila from Issengo-Issing near Falzes-Pfalzen has been producing essential oils
and herb products with processes that have been handed down from one generation to another. www.bergila.com

Autumn
IS COMING
O F GA R L A N D E D COWS A N D C U L I N A RY C E L E B R AT I O N S
The woods show themselves with bright colours, the clear air in the mountains guarantees
the best viewing conditions, and the first peaks
are already covered with snow. It is autumn in
the Pustertal-Val Pusteria.
This is the period when the livestock traditionally
return. Splendidly decorated cows and calves
are led from the Alpine pastures down into the
valleys. With a procession and often even with
a festival, thanks are given that the animals
have once again been able to pass the summer without any serious incidents. Among the
festivals and traditions in the autumn, “s’Terner
Schmelzpfandl” [the “Terento Melting Pot”] in
Terento-Terenten is especially worthy of mention: from sowing to the harvest, you will get an
insight into the life of our ancestors. The high
point of the entire series of events is the farm
cooking week.
‘S TERNER SCHMELZPFANDL:
(TERENTO MELTING POT) FARM COOKING
October 14-23, 2016
Experience and enjoy the culture and cuisine of the Pustertal in Terento: typical old
dishes will be served in restaurants, snack bars, and even in farmhouses. At the same
time, an interesting program of accompanying events will provide the opportunity
for guided hikes, visits to mills, baking bread, cooking classes, and a visit to an old
farmhouse set up in the center of the village that has been furnished true to the original style. A “Schmelzpfandl” is the melting pot in which the butter was melted for
the hearty dishes.

RESTAURANTS
& INNS
The Pustertal-Val Pusteria is famous for
its versatile and traditional cuisine,
and the selection is truly huge: from
the gourmet temple to the family-run
inn to cosy restaurants and rustic Alpine refuges, there is just the right thing
for every palate. Genuine hospitality,
making sure that guests are satisfied,
and the love of tradition are all the
main focus.
You can take a look at the entire variety of dining options in the Kronplatz
Holiday Region at:
www.kronplatz.com/treat
Hasenöhrl, Schlutza, Tirschtlan..
No, those are not the names of breathtaking peaks of the Dolomites, but rather
the finest highpoints of the cuisine of the
Pustertal-Val Pusteria.
Allow yourself to be swept away on a
voyage of culinary delights: from down-toearth South Tyrolean fare like out of
Grandma’s recipe collection to light Italian
cuisine with fine Mediterranean vegetables
to the most delectable Austrian desserts
that just have to be tried. North and South
melt together in the pot into an unmistakable culinary palette for the palate. And depending upon personal taste, wine drinkers
will find a rich selection of South Tyrolean
pearls from which to choose, from Gewürztraminer to Lagrein. Connoisseurs can
follow the caprices of their senses in the
Kronplatz Holiday Region: one day chatting at an avant-garde café or stopping off
at an Alpine refuge, another day having a
fine dinner in a fantastically cosy, traditional wood-panelled restaurant honoured by
Michelin or Gault Millau or just meeting
friends in the evening at a pizzeria.

Local Products
Fragrant Alpine cheese, homemade bread,
fresh berries from their own garden, elder
flower syrups, Pustertal potatoes, and all
kinds of vegetables – these are just some
of the products that farmers from this valley produce and offer. Local products are
more popular than ever, since that is simply
the best way to know what is in them. But it
is not just for that reason: quality simply tastes better, and shorter transport distances
protect the environment. There are therefore many reasons for visiting a farmer’s
market or making a stop at one of the
many direct sellers.

A VIEW OF
WINTER
One Holiday Region, Three Ski Areas,
and Unforgettable Active Adventures
The Kronplatz Holiday Region is a paradise for winter
sports enthusiasts. Three ski areas at once call the
Region their own.
The Kronplatz, South Tyrol-Südtirol’s number one skiing
mountain, is a part of the Dolomiti Superski ski association,
and as such, it has modern cable cars and chair lifts and
perfectly groomed slopes, and can be completely covered
with man-made snow as needed.
The Speikboden in the Valli di Tures and Aurina-Tauferer
Ahrntal is especially appreciated by families with children.
The small, very manageable ski area offers a fantastic view
of over eighty 3,000 meter (10,000 foot) peaks.
The Klausberg in Cadipietra-Steinhaus in the Valle AurinaAhrntal is the highest ski area within the Holiday Region. At
2,510 meters (8,235 feet) above sea level are found the bestgroomed slopes with the most varied of degrees of difficulty.
Away from the slopes, those who love sledding, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating, ice climbing, or ski touring
can let off all the steam they want and then allow themselves
to be pampered with a massage or a health spa experience.
