A Message From
Frank P. Petrone
Supervisor —
Town of Huntington
This report is a record of the achievements and
accomplishments of the Huntington Youth Bureau system of
youth services. In these pages you will discover the scope of
the programs and services available to our youth in families
in the Town of Huntington.
For 42 years, the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau has
been the standard for a holistic approach to youth services.
The success of the Youth Bureau is due to a combination of
dedication and participation by volunteers, professional
staff, local business, government and not-for-profit
community-based agencies working together to help youth
of this Town grow and reach their full potential.
We look forward to continued positive outcomes and
achievements from our Youth Bureau in 2011.
A Message from Christine Matis
Chairperson - Huntington Youth Bureau Board (2010)
Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “ We cannot always build the future for our youth but we can build our youth
for the future”. As poignant now as it was then the economic challenges today have placed an unprecedented stress
on communities. Yet, as a community we owe our youth the best it can give. Since it’s founding in 1968, the Huntington Youth Bureau (HYB) has been the hub of youth services for the greater Huntington community and continues to
strive to provide support to its youth. Through its many programs it has been proactive in assisting and supporting
youth in their growth and development to be caring, responsible and contributing members of society.
The Youth Bureau in conjunction with youth service agencies is located in each school district, and has established several townwide initiatives to meet the special needs of the youth, their family and the community. The Huntington Youth Bureau’s many volunteers and staff have served the needs, interests and welfare of youth and continue to do so. They are essential in identifying local and townwide needs. In addition, volunteers serve on governing
boards of local youth agencies and on town forces advising special townwide projects.
Last year, the greater Huntington community faced many challenges as a result of our economic times. As
government agencies threatened funding to not-for-profits, the Board fought to secure financing for the continued
operation of the Youth Bureau System. It outreached to the community to make a difference in the lives of our youth
by participating on the Huntington Youth Board. In addition, the Town’s commitment and support to our youth was
unwavering.
On behalf to the Huntington Youth Board and myself it has been a privilege to serve with such diverse members of the community committed to the greater Huntington community. Thank you to our Town Board, HYB, staff,
project and program volunteers and donors that make it possible for every youth to thrive and be successful in their
lives. We are fortunate to live in such a great community!
A Message from Maria Georgiou, LCSW-R
Executive Director - Huntington Youth Bureau
Since 1968, dedicated volunteers and staff have collaborated together to build Huntington’s comprehensive system of youth services. The Town of Huntington Youth Bureau
2010 Annual Report showcases some of the accomplishments and achievements of this
youth services system.
We are grateful for the continued support of the Town Supervisor, Youth Board and
Town Council. In 2011 we will strive to continue to create effective programming designed
to meet the needs of youth and families in Huntington.
THE HUNTINGTON YOUTH BUREAU SYSTEM
What do we do to help youth and the families?
The Town of Huntington Youth Bureau is an agency of Town government. Mandated under New
York State Executive Law (Chapter 1000 of the Laws of 1974), the Youth Bureau promotes the growth,
development and well-being of all youth in the Town of Huntington through the development and
implementation of programs and services that are responsive to the needs of youth, their families and
the community. In accordance with a comprehensive Town wide plan, the Huntington Youth Bureau
contracts with local, community-based agencies and the schools to provide a variety of programs and
services.
The Youth Bureau provides support for programs in schools in the Town; offers training and
technical assistance to agencies, schools and youth-serving professionals; provides school-based
counseling; finds new funding to help schools and local agencies develop new programs; and provides
administrative oversight for all contracted agencies.
Community and Youth Agencies (CYAs) Services and Programs
Neighborhood-based CYAs provide a broad spectrum of services that include counseling and social,
cultural and recreational activities. Programs are available evenings, weekends, holidays and after
school. CYAs run programs as diverse as peer mediation, band nights, basketball programs and
discussion groups. Each CYA is a non-profit, community-based organization, overseen by a Board of
Directors that is composed of both youth and adults and represents the diverse needs, cultures and
interests of the community.

homeless or runaway—by providing counseling, crisis intervention, emergency shelter, street outreach
and prevention services to youth and their families.
Youth Court (271-5547) trains teens to dispense justice to their peers—in real court. Volunteer youth perform
roles of prosecuting and defending attorney, judge, bailiff and jury.

Huntington youth and their families to access services when in crisis.
General Youth Programs
Programs and activities of the Community and Youth Agencies (CYAs) are designed and
delivered as part of a comprehensive plan that responds to the needs of youth and their
families. They include:
Youth Development. At the core of the Huntington Youth Bureau system Youth Development builds resiliencies against factors that put youth at risk for such behaviors as using drugs or alcohol, becoming truant, dropping out, running away,
joining gangs, acting violently or destructively, becoming pregnant, contracting HIV, etc. Youth Development encourages
youth to identify and use their strengths in order to enhance their capacity to make positive choices and take responsible
actions concerning themselves, their families, their community and society as a whole. In every CYA, youth help design and
carry out programs, help their peers, volunteer for community services and serve as Board members. Examples can be seen
in the Grandfriends, Natural Helpers, and in such CYA programs as Peer Listeners, Youth Council, International Cooking and
Step Team.
Special Prevention. These programs target youth who and have been identified as at-risk by the school, their parents or agency staff. Programs include Anti-Bullying, Stress Management, and Conflict Resolution.
Community Services. These activities organize youth, their families and the community in the processes of
changing or developing service structures, mechanisms or linkages.
Advocacy. Whether on behalf of an individual, a family or a group, or on behalf of a cause or policy, the ultimate goal is to enable youth and families to promote and achieve their own rights, best interests and well being for themselves and by themselves.
Recreation. Programs include basketball and flag football games, trips to places like theme parks and museums, summer days at the beach or
Dix Hills Pool, canoe and bike trips—events which provide youth with the opportunity to make friends, engage in positive activities and be in
contact with a supportive, caring adult. Recreational opportunities include Drop-In, Movie Night, dances and arts and crafts.
Outreach. This happens anytime and anywhere a worker makes contact with young people and forms a connection—in the schools, malls, on
the streets, and in movie theaters—everywhere young people congregate. In community Outreach, meetings and public engagements help
the community better understand and support the needs and concerns of youth and their families. We are given a unique chance to listen to
the often overlooked voices of young people in the community.
Training. The Huntington Youth Bureau and its agencies provide field placements and training for many of New York’s undergraduate and
graduate social work, counseling and education students. All of these students receive specialized training from Administrative and system
staff. In addition, the agencies and projects make training available to all community members and volunteers on emerging trends and important issues. The Huntington Youth Bureau Administrative staff provide training for all staff in the system in order to ensure the highest
quality of services for the community and monthly system-wide training to keep all staff aware of the latest developments in youth services,
in technological advances that might aid reporting and evaluations, and in fundraising and locating funding sources to create and expand
programs.
Huntington Youth Bureau
In 2010, the Huntington Youth Bureau coordinated system of services for youth and families served 43,145 individuals.
Tri-Community and Youth Agency
(TRI-CYA)
Serving the school districts of Huntington, South Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor
Tri Community and Youth Agency in partnership with Huntington Community Council provided a free community dinner for local families
with 144 people attending. The food was donated by local restaurants and members of the Council. This event brought out many parents of youth that attend after school programs at the community center.
Tri CYA Sewing Class served 16 girls and boys and taught them the basic of sewing. This group was run by a volunteer and resulted in
the participants crafting book bags, journal covers, book marks, gifts and vests. The sewing group took a class trip to the Maker Faire
where they met craftspeople and their creations.
Youth Directions and Alternatives
(YDA)
Serving the school districts of Elwood, Harborfields and Northport/East Northport
The Youth Directions and Alternatives (YDA) Community Impact Teams, in conjunction, sponsored a “Back to School Drive” on behalf of
the Northport/East Northport Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry. The combined teams collected school snacks and supplies for local
families. This event alerted participating youth to the plight of low income and working poor community members-many of whom are
their neighbors and friends.
YDA sponsored a family trip to Philadelphia Pennsylvania. This trip provided the community youth and their parents with the opportunity to spend an enjoyable day touring historic sites and landmarks such as Independence Hall and the Constitution Center. An educational walking tour with a costumed guide was a highlight of this trip.
Reach Community and Youth Agency
(Reach CYA)
Serving the school districts of Commack and Half Hollow Hills
Sixty three Millennium Hills student residents participated in Homework Help & Social/Recreational programs every Wednesday and
Thursday evening, from 5:30-7pm. Students engaged in arts and crafts activities, board games, Bingo and team-building activities.
Special events included Movie Night, Taco Night, Bicycle Repair Workshops, Astronomy Presentations, Back to School Supply Giveaway,
Ice Cream Social Night, Pizza Night, Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Spooktacular and other Holiday celebrations.
REACH CYA sold out 25 summer trips attended by 175 youth. Parents and youth are extremely pleased with the activities, hours, low
cost of trips, mix of old friends and new acquaintances made and staff supervision. Several family trips were offered this year including:
Facile Project
The Back to School Supplies Program was offered to provide local school aged youth with school supplies so they could
be ready for the first day of school. . This year the program served 648 youth, 326 families, which is almost a 21%
increase from the previous year’s program.
The Manor Field Family Center staff successfully provided programs and services to a total of 4870 unduplicated individuals which is an increase of almost 45% from the previous reporting period.
Project Excel
Project Excel conducted several presentations on cyber bullying and Internet safety for Stimson Middle School, Commack Middle School, Elwood Middle School and Candlewood Middle School. These large scale presentations educated
over 1,675 youth in topics which included: password protection; identification of safe and dangerous websites; case
studies; what is considered cyber bullying; and the consequences of bullying.
Project Excel’s Employment Placement Program was redeveloped for 2010. Extensive time, effort and training to ensure Excel is better equipped to track and monitor youth and the employment placement they receive. Counselors provide intensive training workshops for youth interested in employment then conduct an individual follow-up meeting with
youth to ensure the needs and expectations of the youth and employer are met. As a result of this program, a total of
125 youth were placed in retail and odd jobs in 2010.
Youth Court
Huntington Youth Court (HYC) celebrated its 10th year in operation with a dinner fundraiser honoring three (3) key people who have been instrumental to the Huntington Youth Court Program for the last decade. The event was held at the
Harbor Club in Huntington. Huntington Town Councilman Mark Cuthbertson, along with two lawyers, Gerard McCreight
and David Scott were the distinguished honorees of the evening. The event was attended by Huntington Town Councilwomen Glenda Jackson, Huntington Youth Bureau Staff, community members and family and friends of the honorees.
The fundraiser was a huge success, raising money to supplement materials and supplies needed for many of HYC programs.
Huntington Youth Court trained 72 new youth volunteers. This training group of youth was extremely diverse and the
largest in the last eight (8) years. Volunteers represented six (6) different high schools in the Town of Huntington: Walt
Whitman, Huntington, Northport, Half Hollow Hills East, Half Hollow Hills West, and Harborfields. The volunteers attended trainings every Tuesday night for two (2) hours, for a total of 10 weeks.
Sanctuary Project
During 2010, Sanctuary staff provided 27 educational presentations to youth, parents and professionals throughout the
Town of Huntington. A total of 629 individuals were reached through these educational presentations.
Sanctuary’s counselors provided independent living skills training for 100 youth between the ages of 16-21 in 2010.
This training occurred in the form of individual counseling, group counseling and workshops at various locations in the
community.
Drug and Alcohol Project
Too Good for Drugs is an evidence based program for 6 th grade students. It provides students with the knowledge;
skills and attitudes they need to make healthy decisions and avoid drug use. Throughout the 10 lessons, students are
taught how to set goals and make good decisions that will contribute to their overall health and well-being. Too Good
for Drugs was taught in Elwood Middle School grade 6 for a total of 480 student participants and 32 sessions.
The Transitions Group is held at the Office of Children and Family Services in Commack and facilitated in cooperation
with Project Excel. The focus of the group is to educate the female participants on how to make healthy decisions
when they are released from the program including the acquisition of communication skills and the understanding of
the consequences of maladaptive behavior. The group was held for a total of 41 sessions in 2010.
