T E L : 207-782-5922 Auburn PRESORTED STANDARD U.S. POSTAGE PAID AUBURN, ME PERMIT NO. 115 04210 730 Center St. Auburn Plaza Auburn, ME 04210 [email protected] www.cotebrothers.com Welcome to the Spring issue of our newsletter. Once again we hope to keep you informed and up to date. Happy Spring to all of our readers and a warm welcome back to all you snowbirds! We hope you had a good winter and that you’ve brought back the warm weather. Have you heard? Sewing has been in the news! Recently, there have been several T.V. news segments and articles on how sewing has regained its popularity especially among the young. They’re having fun designing their own clothes or just altering their own clothing to make it their own style. Sewing has become a great way for our young people to express their individuality and creative flair. Cote’s has added several classes for that younger generation of sewers. Check out our class schedule for April vacation as well as weekends. If you know a young person who would like to learn to sew we encourage you to encourage them to come to our classes. What a great way for them to have some constructive fun while expressing their uniqueness and creativity. We will be happy to provide sewing machines in class for those who don’t have one. We have some great projects such as dressing up jeans, making bags and rag quilt jackets. While Ron and I were in South Carolina visiting our family, my 14-year-old granddaughter, Taylor and I made an awesome bag on her Brother sewing machine. We had been shopping and looking at bags (and the prices of them) which inspired her to make her own. In our travels, we spotted a fabric store. I thought we had died and gone to heaven. Taylor and I had so much fun choosing fabric and I must say her choices were perfect. If you get a chance, go to the “What’s New” section at www.cotebrothers.com to see what we created. She wanted something similar to a Vera Bradley bag and I think the outcome was quite good. Needless to say, I had a wonderful time with my granddaughter and Ron was happy because he won the bet that I couldn’t go without sewing for one week! Bernina is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary. They’ve been making sewers happy for 75 years. Make sure to go online to www.berninausa.com and enter to win a $5000 shopping spree (ends 4/15/07). Cote Bros. will also be joining in on the celebration. Be sure to sign up for our Diamond Garden Party (it’s free). It will be on Thursday, May 17th. We’ll have some great food, prizes, and giveaways. We’ll be demonstrating some new products and have some great specials too. While we’re on the subject of celebrating, the Bernina Artista 730E has been selected as a “Best Buy” by Consumers Digest. For those of you who own one, it may be no surprise. With the addition of the Bernina Stitch Regulator (BSR) this machine makes sewing an ultimate experience. Stop in and we’ll show you why this Microsoft Powered Sewing Machine was chosen as Consumer Digests Best Buy. We are continue to make changes to our website www.cotebrothers.com. Make sure to check out the “What’s New” section which we will be updated regularly. We received a new selection of fabrics from Benartex. Go to “What’s New” to see the table runner Judy made and the quilt I designed and made with these fabrics. We will have fabric kits available for both projects. The fabric is also available by the yard. Don’t miss our Spring Tune Up Event on Thursday, March 26th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Ron, Leo and Carl will be on duty all day. They will oil, clean and power blow your sewing machine for $35.00. They will also clean the outside with an industrial cleaner. This will also include some minor troubleshooting. Be sure to mark your calendars for this event and have your sewing machine Spring cleaned by our professionals. We are planning a bus trip to the Lowell Quilt Festival on Thursday, August 2nd. The Images Quilt Show will be held at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium and the Double Tree Hotel located across the street from the auditorium. The Tsongas Arena, where it’s normally held, will be closed for repairs. There will be vendors at both venues so prepare to add to your stash. There will also be a quilt exhibit and antique exhibit at the New England Quilt Museum. There will be a shuttle provided by the quilt festival so that you can get to each venue. We will be at the show from 10:00am to 6:00pm this year. This trip normally fills up fast so be sure to reserve your seat early. We also have spaces still available for the April 2008 trip to the Quilters Heritage Celebration in Lancaster, PA. We already have the bus half full so contact us if you would like to join us. Our class schedule is filled with some great projects. We have a special class planned for Mother and Child in May. We also have some quilt classes in appliqué, paper piecing, crazy quilting, thread painting and so much more. I’ll be teaching a Decorative Work class in June. We’ll sew up a stylish bag and embellish it with decorative stitches. We’ll also do some couching and play with decorative yarn in our bobbins. We’ll have Sarah Anne Smith here again this quarter. Be sure to check out her classes. In April, she’ll be doing a class on fabric postcards and greeting cards. Her students really got creative with these in last quarter’s class. In June, Sarah will be teaching “Decorative Stitch Machine Appliqué”. It’s a great way to use those additional stitches on your sewing machine. She’s also got Machine Quilting Design scheduled in May. Kolleen Painchaud will be having a four-week class in April and May on her new Easter Egg Hunt pattern. Stop by the store to see her sample. You’ll love the colors she’s combined in the crazy patch piecing. Last but not least, your overwhelming response to “Crafting for Charity” has been tremendous. We can’t thank you enough for your generosity. Your contributions are so wonderfully created and are appreciated by those who need them. The quilts, afghans, pillowcases, scarves, mittens, hats, socks and so much more will help so many. We have also received donations of yarn and fabric for those of you who would like to pick some up and make something for one or all of the causes and return them here to our store. We also have patterns available. Thank you for sharing your talents. Happy Sewing! Lisa Cote-Blake “New Young Star” Amanda Soule (Soule Mama) www.soulemama.com Amanda Soule is becoming quite famous. She learned to sew from her “Nana” as a teenager and hasn’t stopped! At first she started sewing to help make ends meet in the household by mending the kids clothes and making their PJ’s etc. Amanda then started getting creative with her sewing and making things for others. She now does all kinds of sewing from quilts, pocket books, costumes and crafts. With all this creativity she has been able to market her products to the masses. Amanda has just finished her first book which will be titled ‘The Creative Family’ is currently at the publishers with a scheduled release date of January 2008. Amanda’s description of her new book is “simple projects and activities for you and your children that encourages imagination and nurture family connections”. If you haven’t visited her website you must. It is just awesome. You won’t get through it in a day. www.soulemama.com Amanda has a way of captivating you with her writings. She is very creative in the way that she blends her family into her site. You will see many pictures of her family and her various creations as you visit her site. Sometimes you feel like you are right there. It is like reading a good book. We had the privilege of a recent visit to our store from Amanda. She met with us to help us reach the young sewers. She really inspired us with her knowledge and ideas. We needed fresh ideas and a different approach to be able to teach the young adults and meet their needs. We just wish she could spend more time with us. Amanda will also be testing some new products for us and you will be able to read her comments in future newsletters or on our Website under “What’s New”. She will also be making some simple samples of them for us to be able to easily show you how they all work. One project she doing right now is testing several binding attachments. Ron set her up with several types and different methods to try from the more complicated to very simple ones. The BERNINA® Stitch Regulator—Your Tool For Easy Free-motion Stitching By Marlis Bennett The BERNINA Stitch Regulator is revolutionizing free-motion stitching techniques. The stress previously associated with free-motion sewing has been alleviated with the addition of the BERNINA Stitch Regulator to select BERNINA sewing machines. Presently, the BSR is standard on the BERNINA aurora 440 and artista 730. It is optional on the BERNINA artista 630 and 640 models. With the addition of a purchased upgrade kit, the BERNINA artista 200 can also be part of the BSR family of machines. The ease by which even the novice free-motion stitcher can achieve beautiful results is leading to new exploration of this time-honored process. Perfecting Your Free-motion Stitching Basic Training •Attach BSR foot, lower feed dogs, thread machine, activate needle stop down, alternately select Mode 1/Mode 2. •Sink and then raise needle to bring bobbin thread to top. Take a couple of stitches to secure, trim thread ends. With even speed, move fabric front to back to get feel of the machine. •Practice using different motions: Zigzag, Blocks, U’s, I’s, puzzle pieces Painting by Number: Using a print fabric as a guide, “color in” print areas using a thread color slightly contrasting the print to draw attention to the stitching. Stitch direction should follow the direction of the print. For example, when stitching a leaf, stitching should feather out from the center of the leaf at an angle, enhancing the shape. Build up stitching slowly—less is more. Use multiple shades of thread for a more realistic appearance. Tip: Select a fabric with a large print to experiment with thread painting by “following the lines”. Tip: Thread paint on two layers of polyester organza and Aqua Film to create “embroidered appliqués”. Rocking Bobbin: Wind bobbin with heavier thread, insert into second bobbin case, and adjust tension on bobbin case. Working from the wrong side of the fabric, stitch the desired free-motion pattern. To secure thread tails, use a tapestry needle to pull bobbin thread to wrong side. Tip: Be sure to keep a separate bobbin case specifically for bobbin-work. When loosening the tension, hold the bobbin case over a container so that if the screw falls out it will be caught. Tip: Bobbin work is not just for free-motion work. Use this same technique with the feed dogs up and machine decorative stitches. Adjust he stitch settings for more variety. Special points of interest: • Mode 1 with foot control -Needle moves when foot control is pressed -Allows a securing stitch -Sews like home machine BUT with regular stitches • Mode 1 without foot control -Electric Needle -Unplug foot control -Use start/stop button and needle starts moving -Allows a securing stitch • Mode 2 with foot control -Press foot control and move fabric to make needle move up and down -Use Securing function to lock stitches Note: Presser foot Pressure is lowered to 1 when using both modes thereby allowing easier movement of fabric under the foot. They are working on it to try to make it compatible and we will be the first to know and will put it on our website in the “What’s New” section. There isn’t a work around yet. The launch of the new Vista has many software companies scrambling, as all of the bugs haven’t been worked out yet. Even in “Popular Mechanics” magazine (March 07) there was an article and it said, “no matter what kind of PC you have, your bound to have driver and software conflicts when integrating your existing programs and hardware with Vista. So we’d advise waiting for six months to a year until the kinks have been worked out”. If you can hold off buying the new Vista, we would recommend doing that until this is resolved. At the very least keep your older version of windows until then. If you have any questions you can visit Bernina’s web site www.berninausa.com and go to software section for updates. You can also call us and we will know as soon as there are any updates. A What’s the best & Q way to cut very small jump stitches between design parts? Jump stitches of all lengths are best trimmed with curved-tip embroidery scissors and tweezers. Very small jumps (1/8” or less) are considered “buried stitches” and are to remain intact. These compact stitches are a digitizer’s way of getting between small areas of a design, such as between words or monogram letters. To easily trim jump stitches, use tweezers to pull up on the stitch close to one end and snip the thread close to the fabric surface. Repeat for the other end of the jump stitch. The tweezers pull the tread taut; when the tread is released, it retracts into the design after a close trim. For thread numbs that remain between stitches, use a blunt needle tip to gently push the thread end back into the design. For best results, trim jump stitches often during the embroidery process to prevent burying long jump stitches under the design.
