My Mum tells me and I remember; she is my first teacher
My Dad shows me and I understand; he is my first teacher
My mum and dad teach me through involving me in our
family things and I am starting to learn and understand things in
my life a little better.
Good afternoon Judges, Principals, Parents, Teachers and
fellow schoolmates,
My topic is: My Parents are my First Teachers

When I was a baby, my mother taught me how to walk and
gave me food for my body and food for my mind. Let me tell
you about the food for my mind. As I grew older, I learnt to be
a good listener as I followed my mum’s example and saw for
myself how she was a good listener to the family and friends.
This watching and learning continues to be food for my mind.
We may not look at this as learning as we students only think
of learning as happening in school from our teachers, books or
internet. When I read the theme of the speech festival, it made
me think deeply for the first time about how my parents being
my first teachers.
Whenever I have problems and I can’t solve them by
myself, my mum would talk to me .She would ask me about
what happened. I’d tell her and she’d made me feel so relaxed.
Since my brother was born, my mother needed to take care of
him, so she started to pay more attention to him. However she
taught my older sister to take the responsibility of listening and
talking to me when she was busy with baby. She also told us that

we sisters need to help each other, look out for one another. I
love my mother for this because she taught me to be independent
and still be a caring member of the family.
Let me tell you about my father. My father is a kind man
and he doesn’t like to argue with my mother. What did I learn
from this? I learnt an important skill, when I feel angry about
something, I need to remain quiet, drink some water like dad
always does and talk later about the problem when I am calm.
I am sure this teaching and sowing of this calm habit would
become part of me as I grow and develop my personality.
I love my father as he is always willing to spend time with
me when mum is busy. Whenever he has time, he takes us to the
beach and it’s these moments also that I learn from and treasure.
He shares my worries, sorrows and my sadness in his own quiet
manner. Although, my father is very quiet, he always has a smile
on his face that lights up my world like a thousand suns.

In the past I had and in the future, I will have many
teachers. But my parents will always be my first teachers.
They are willing to take the time to listen to my happiness and
my sadness and they encourage me no matter what happens.
Although during Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, I gave them
gifts to show my love for them, those gifts do not show them my
love for them forever. It’s my actions that count!
